Four years ago, David Edwards appeared from nowhere with a series of EPs and a debut album, released under his Minotaur Shock guise on Manchester-based label Melodic. Thanks to his beautifully crafted blend of electronica largely tainted with acoustic instrumentation, he rapidly gained recognition, and the release of an album compiling his first three EPs only served to reinforce his position. Having moved to legendary label 4AD, the Minotaur returns with a new, more mature, sound. We took the opportunity to get the man talking about his work, his influences… and FM rock!

Ladytron have announced details of the release of a new single, Sugar, on June 13th, their debut on Island Records. The single, produced by Jim Abiss (Kasabian, DJ Shadow, Placebo) and available on three formats, CD, 7Inch and 12Inch Vinyl, will be followed by the release of their third album, 'Witching Hour' on August 29th. The single will feature exclusive new songs plus mixes from the likes of Jagz Kooner, Playgroup and Archigram.

Studio Pankow - Linienbusse

Studio Pankow is the collaborative venture of three musicians, two of which have been pivotal to the development of electronic music : David Moufang (Move D), Jamie Hodge (Born Under a Rhyming Planet) and Kai Kroker (Rawell). Between them the three have had releases on labels as influential and diverse as Warp, Ninja Tune, Plus 8, Rising High, Plug Research, Wmf, Fax, Reflective and, most importantly, David Moufag's seminal Source Records. Between moufang's deeply emotive emissions as Move D and Hodge's organic techno for Richie Hawtin's Plus 8 imprint, both artists created a new electronic variant that acted as a missing link between the groundbreaking constructions that typified Detroit techno and the indebted artificial intelligence movement pioneered by the Warp label here in the uk. Later on Hodge and Moufang started broadening the scope of their work to take in elements of jazz and improvisation - culminating in the formation of a new band that would feature legendary vibraphonist Karl Berger - a player who spent most of the sixties working with Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman and Lee Konitz. This new project was called `Conjoint' and spawned two massively important albums, at one point compared to Miles Davis` "In a silent way" by The Wire magazine's Rob Young. "Studio Pankow" finds Hodge and Moufang back in the studio, partnered by berlin's Kai Kroker whose studio provides the setting and the name for this inspired new work. The eleven tracks that feature on this album were recorded in 3 sessions over a time period of more than 4 years. The three artists, each residing at a different location, would converge at kai's studio pankow and start improvising. `Linienbusse', at times nods towards their familiar fascination with beats and hazy strings, at others developing the session into an effervescent glow of minimalism and velvet ambience that transforms conjoint's hazy jazz fascination into something much more unconscious. On the incredible title track, for instance, this sumptuous reduction takes in a solitary piano that acts as a sparkling, reflective counterweight to the celluloid ambience and fuzzy transmissions that lie beneath. With a title that roughly translates as "regular busses", you get the feeling that somewhere outside this space life carried on at regular pace, but for the duration of these amazing pieces everything very gently slowed down until each single detail and intonation of life became perfectly clear, captured here for posterity. One of the most important releases for us at CCO and a breathtaking document of a collaboration that goes right back to the heart of pioneering electronic music. A huge recommendation....

Jose Gonzales - Veneer

What do you mean, you haven't checked out Jose Gonzalez yet? What appears to be the problem here - have we not made it clear enough in our reviews of the ep's? This guy is one serious talent, a delicate open tuned guitarist in a style somewhere between brasilian song and classic period late sixties early seventies english folk. The voice simply melts any ill considered opposition, sotto voce and well balanced, you'd choose this guy to sing you to sleep any day of the year. Undoubtedly one of the defining records of this or most any year: we're not overstating things, when we suggest you get on this album now - positively unmissable and simply divine music. ...
Ryoichi Kurokawa - Copynature
Progressive Form
One of the ones that eluded us all first time, we finally managed to haul in a copies of this beauty from the excellent Progressive Form in Japan. Followers of the label will already be prepared, recordings of the utmost quality, care packaged beatifully and with an unrivalled sense of future in music. As you'd expect from a protégé of Aoki Takamasa, this is perfectly considered music - melding the sophisticated, delicate frequencies of a 12k or line release with the low end dynamics of the electronic masters. As counterpoint to the delerious brilliance of Studio Pankow this week, and for a decidedly more "difficult" listen, Kurokawa shows more than enough chops here to explain his subsequent adoption into Takemura's Daisyworld chain. Its sonic corruptions and devious tweaks are bedded down on a bottomless chasm of bass, which as you already know, makes us very happy indeed....
Semuin - Province
Audio Dregs
With it's FS Blumm cover art and Greg Davis mastering credit, I daresay you could take an informed stab at the sound of this record - but just in case we'll tell you anyway. Semuin (aka Berlin based Jochen Briesen) is a cognoscente of panegyrical instrumentronica that prefers thinly populated production that introduces the various elements in a relaxed and informal fashion as opposed to a grand-standing, cluttered approach. Opening with 'Uppland', Briesen presents a rinky-dink piano through a mid-afternoon heat haze that reluctantly offers up some gloriously wholesome, mealy-mouthed chimes before it breaks out in a bout of percussive spasms and settles back down through a calming acoustic guitar rinse-out. A multi chaptered composition, 'Uppland' is immediately contradicted on the cut&shut vocal splicing of 'Lktubii' where diced speech is liberally stirred through The Books-style backing. Undoubtedly the album's centrepiece is the eight minute epic of 'Lok' where Semuin assumes a position somewhere between a more overt Efterklang or avant-inclined Caribou, terminating the Ligeti influenced arrangement with a cheeky Stravinsky sample. With his stated love of Papua Nuigini music most apparent on the stilted acoustica of 'Ende', 'Province' is a beautifully realised album full of light and shade that'll have your ears utterly exultant....
Manual - Azure Vista

The hugely popular Jonas Munk returns with his long awaited new album under his Manual moniker. Seeped in a carefully coated love of 4AD (some of the drum programming and production here sounds like classic Cocteau Twins) and a sound that betrays his close personal and musical ties with Ulrich Schnauss, "Azure Vista" is Manual's most overtly ambitious collection of songs yet. Opening with the unashamedly grand 'Clear Skies above the Coastline Cathedral', Manual clealry exhibits a similar vista-expanding scope to that of Mr Schnauss, albeit rendered through an entirely different musical palate. 'Summer of Freedom' again demonstrates that Manual can combine potentially saturnine elements into a neck cricking whole before we are given a half-time break through the twinkly breath of 'Twilight'. Launching back in to the seven minute ambience of 'Tourmaline', Manual then follows on with the barn-storming 'Neon Reverie' which positively exudes hair-spray. A dirty habit made clean and an album that will no doubt be adored by anyone who's gotten into Ulrich Schnauss in the last couple of years. Recommended....
Freeform - Outside In
Skam
Although he's Skam's longest serving artist (a full-fat decade) this is only Freeform's second full length album release for the label. Following on from last summer's 'Wildcat' EP, 'Outside In' is a finely blended homebrew of folksy roots and avant/electro-nica sensibilities given extra pep through Simon Pyke's diffused vocals. As Theremins puncture the service and all manner of giddy electro noises somersault around you, it begins to sound not unlike a musical episode of Dr Who. Not limiting himself to just one sound, Pyke elsewhere looks to shuffling loungecore, Native American influences and pastoral electronica to achieve a vibrant patchwork which is in no way diminished through it's authors stylistically roaming eye. This album is a total curio - A Skam album released with home listening in mind, something which works here so well that you start to wonder what else this once unfathomably dark and uncompromising label might get up to. Lovely music - a big recommendation....

Limited edition double cd - bonus disc features : The Spydeberg Session, Mikado (Demo), All I Know Is Tonight (Demo), Stardust Hotel (Demo) and Swedenborgske Rom (Demo)* Yet another quality Norwegian musical export, Jaga (minus the Jazzist) are a ten piece collective who's combined passion for their art creates wonderful tension within the deeply textured compositions as each person clammers to make an overt impact on the whole. Rather than flap about like a bag of canaries, Jaga turn this conflict to their advantage allowing often contradictory influences to co-exist, making 'What We Must' all the more amblicated for its lack of predictability. Opening with the post-rock opera of 'All I Know is Tonight', Jaga conjure up the best James Bond soundtrack there has never been - but in a parallel universe that drops the tepid narrative in favour of bits shimmering and soaring as far as the eye can see. Similarly, 'Stardust Hotel' manages to embark on an ecclectic escapade with horn excursions whilst guitars and percussion Slowdive around them. The shoe-gazing influence is also apparent on 'For All You Happy People' where full-on choral action runs up against rock-driven instrumentation, whilst the closing 'I Have a Ghost Now What?' is a hair-swinging kaleidoscope of pop sensibilities and smart-bomb sharp instrumentation that builds and builds and builds... Multiple aural alchemy....

Two cd's (split into "Play" and "Rest") feature tracks from 22 artists (mostly unknown artists, with the exception of Mira Calix and E.Stonji) given the simple brief - to write a track based in some way around the noises made by cats. The results, as you'd imagine, are suitably crunchy and wildly varied - making this another Skam oddity, one to snap up!...
Vitalic - Ok Cowboy

Currently the dance darling of choice for Evening Session listeners (replacing last years Mylo infatuation), Vitalic finally releases his debut LP after an apprenticeship served remixing the likes of Bjork, Slam and Basement Jaxx.'OK Cowboy' certainly has all the right constituents in place but does this make it classically informed machine music or electronica by numbers? Keep an eye on the chimney for white or black smoke... Opening with 'Polkamatic', Vitalic (aka Pascal Arbez-Nicolas) emerges with a squelch as a rubber coated beat bounces into view.'Poney Part 1' (culled from his International Deejay Gigolo EP), is a pounding slab of growling bass, ebbing ambient washes and succour punch rhythms that does just enough to keep its head above the water. If you've not heard the over-hyped 'My Friend Dario' we salute you, but here it is in all its glory; drifting far too close to the anaemic mid-90's indie-dance movement for our liking and clipping The Grid's 'Swamp Thing' as it does so. Leaving behind these sticky floored dalliances, 'Ok Cowboy' is far more successful when it avoids the blue Smarties and calms down a bit with 'The Past'. Check....
Stromba - Tales From The Sitting Room

Coalescing around the core nucleus of Tim Tyler and James Dyer (DC Recordings), Stromba take a platter of live instrumentation (trumpet, cello, drums, bass etc.) then crack open a jar of programming acumen, mix, then bring to the boil. First off the hob is 'Camel Spit', opening with a glorious Sergio Leone homage that gives way to supine cocktail lounge, laid back instrumentation. A garnish of half-heard vocal samples underwire the bass-heavy dubwise thud on 'Septic Skank' whilst 'Blue Skin' is seared in heady trumpets and a serious Shadow-esque set of breaks. Elsewhere, the MANDY mastered Stromba give in to the lo-fi approach that saw them naming the album after its place of recording, with the Boom Bip indebted 'Perculator' of particular note. Finishing the meal with a good-time injected bowl of Liquid Liquid raucous funk ('Giddy Up') and the porcelain fragility of the string heavy 'Jewell', I daresay you might be leaving a tip....

The third volume of the "From The Earth To The Spheres" series. While the Torino-based My Cat Is An Alien focus their musical research on instantaneous composition, often combined in audiovisual installations, Jackie-O Motherf*cker, who formed in Portland, Oregon, exactly a decade ago, base their music on roots & american primitive blues, free jazz improv & psych folk-rock aesthetics. Releasing cd-r volumes as audio-documents, as well as setting up live improv installations through their own u-sound archive, JOMF created a platform of collaboration with other kindred spirits. Their piece "Breaking" begins with a kind of old gospel fragmented by beats, which moves throughout empty areas `till imploding into deconstructed sounds & voices over vinyl scratches, where silence breaks out loud & unexpected. MCIAA's "Blank View" is a psychic trip moving from the deep darkness towards the brightest light. this totally improvised track, made of interwoven sounds of cathartic guitar chords , percussions & xylophone, is permeated by wordless vocals, whose impressive and sad lyricism comes out from a streamline of sounds from outer space....
Ruins - Vrresto

Buckle up; we're going in! Blasting out of Japan with earthquake ferocity, Ruins make chin dribblingly spastic music given the suitably bonkers twist of being all played on regular instruments. Having originally broken water in 1998, 'Vrresto' has now been remixed, remastered and rejigged to include a couple of new and previously unreleased tracks. Opening with what sounds like a malfunctioning Duracell Bunny wearing a one-man band suit, 'Snare' kicks off proceedings with an ear-bleeding clatter before morphing into a Mogwai-apeing slow build. The 100m pace is maintained on 'Warrido', this time through cascading instrumentation and staccato rhythms that invade the senses entirely whilst 'Ffenniko' deals in the type of time signature changes that SOAD seem to think they minted. Like Mad Capsule Markets sans the techno infatuation, Ruins take notions of speed metal, psych, hardcore, art rock and funk then cram it all into blistering goblets that'll leave your chest hurting. Drowsy - Growing Green

Folk has enjoyed a recent resurgence of fortunes thanks to the appearance of diverse artists ranging from Adem, and Will Oldham through to Smog and Devendra Banhart, all of whom took a love of classic folk and instilled it with an appreciation for other varied genres. To this list we can now add the Finland based Drowsy whose debut album 'Growing Green' has been 4 years in the making and follows on from the 'Careless Me' release, part of Fat Cat's esteemed 7" series. The opening track's liltingly sunny musical disposition may lull you into presuming that this is a fondent-centered reading of folk, but as soon as 'Some Cursing' introduces vocals you're left in no doubt of Drowsy's tone. Delivered in a gravel flecked five O'clock shadow of a voice, 'Some Cursing's' opening line of "You are a hoare, I hate you all" indicates we are firmly in Bert Jansch territory a tone that pervades into 'Harmless'. Here Drowsy cross-breed their folk perspective with The Flaming Lips' tarnished grandeur and vocal style, whilst the backing piano uncannily resembles Aphex Twin's 'Avril 14th' curio. Elsewhere the Devandra Banhart comparison is at its most pertinent on the Celtic 'Careless Me' whilst the album's closer 'Plim Plom Autumn Song' assumes a similar lo-fi ethic to early Damon Gough EP's. As queer as folk...and utterly lovely....
Yuichiro Fujimoto - Kinoe
Audio Dregs
Yuichiro Fujimoto seems to have a similar fascination (or fetish...) with everyday sounds as fellow Japanese audiophile Cornelius. Yet where Cornelius chose to indulge his aural collages through Wilson-esque Cartoontronica, Fujimoto prefers to incorporate the often contradictory audio snippets into gently swelling and highly textured instrumentation. Straddling the line between Frank Bretschneider style clicks & cuts and Mum lilting organic electronica, Fujimoto opens 'Kinoe' with a wave of unfocused static that is at once utterly alien and completely natural. This soon gives way to a thrumming, tapping, twinkling blanket of ebbing necromancy ('Drawing of Stars') that shares shelf space with both Marsen Jules and Jan Jelinek, creating a thoroughly submersive aural balm. Elsewhere 'After Rain' embarks on a marriage of the natural and the digital with a Deliverance-style music-box face off that slowly smudges into a water curtain of florid electronic twinkles whilst album closer 'Old Bird Tape' is a harmonica heavy, velvet hearted shuffle. Beguiling....
Enduser - Comparing Paths

Tightrope walking over breakz, drum and bass, ragga and breakcore, Enduser is a jack of all trades who can thankfully cope with the potentially hazardous juggling act handling all these disperate genres at once could bring. 'Comparing Paths'is a relaxed, slow-mo take on breakcore that's heavily hip-hopped but won't slash your face on impact. A bit of a calm before the storm situation, 'Comparing Paths' then flows into the dot-matrix beats and subterranean bass of the ragga heavy 'F*ck up the System' that, although forcibly invading your body space, for some reason doesn't feel over-imposing. Enduser's junglist heritage is most pronounced on 'Tripset' and 'The Return', the obligatory Scott Herron reference comes on the shattered rhythms and EFX heavy vocals of 'Gun Temper' whilst 'Slammed in the Face...' does very much what it says on the tin; hard, fast and high-speed dubbed. Ace....
FAX - Collaborations & Remixes

Fair stellar minimal lineup assembled here - and of course the reworkings from Murcof and Pepito run away with the honours Tijuana style. Head straight for these and fall in love all over again with Fernando Corona's amazing talent, almost unmatched these last few years. What else can we really say about Murcof music other than its worth price of admission alone. Pepito too offers a similar acoustic blend, awesomely powerful sound manipulation with a deceptively pop inflected vocal. Fax's original work is of course not to be confused with the wealth of Namlook&Moufang related projects, but is instead the brainchild of mexican Ruben Tamayo, who has been fleetingly glimpsed on some fine Traum recordings these last few years. Other usual suspects include: Portable who thunks it out in true slugger Sud style, Mike Shannon an evergreen member of the minimal grooving scene, ably complemented by Jonas Bering & Bern from the Cologne schools. Ultra - Red come with some welcome aggression, a crowd of dissent aiding an abrasive but addictive closing remix. Useful collection....

Welcome to this year’s Le Weekend festival, which promises to be as defiantly underground as ever. We’ve a dozen bands from six different countries, five playing their first ever UK shows two of which performing for the first time outside their native countries. See them first at Scotland’s longest running experimental music festival.
Dredd Foole, an inspirational figure behind America’s vital free folk scene arrives to play his first gig outside the states. The outstanding Wally Shoup Trio and the Flaherty/Corsano duo provide a foray into free improv while Thurston Moore’s free noise supergroup The Dream Aktion Unit will have you gripping your seats.
European sound shapers will be here in the form of the Flirts and Deathprod pushing the boundaries of electronica. The Japanese Underground arrive in full force spearheaded by the legendary Kousokuya performing their last ever show at LW 05. Otomo Yoshihide closes this year’s festival with his exhilirating New Jazz Ensemble playing for the first time in Scotland.

Maarifa Street/Magic Realism 2 is the first new album from Jon Hassell since 1999’s Ry Cooder produced Fascinoma. Hassell is the visionary creator of a style of music he describes as “Fourth World,” a mysterious, unique hybrid of music both ancient and digital, composed and improvised, Eastern and Western. Maarifa Street/Magic Realism 2 is being released late Spring ’05 on NYEN, distributed by City Hall Records.
In the last two decades, Hassell has recorded 11 highly influential, category-defying solo albums which have, over the years, become so widely appropriated that many of their innovations have become woven into the texture of contemporary music high and low. His collaborators on these recordings have included like-minded innovators such as Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel and David Sylvian.
Of the new recording Hassell explains, “Beginning with three live concerts, each recorded in four instrumental layers, some performances (notably, trumpet) were kept intact, other layers were either re-performed or invented anew while some layers migrated from one performance to another. Some completely new tracks were made by cannibalizing parts from previous works and reshaping them. My hope is that, by weaving together the spontaneity and "imperfections" of a live concert with the "detailing" of a studio recording, something distinctive results.
“I almost subtitled this record "Improved Concerts", after Mati Klarwein's "Improved Paintings" series in which ordinary flea market paintings were miraculously transformed by painting into and out of the original. But one track—which exists only as a stereo recording—has been left untouched: the "encore" at the end, 'Open Secret (Milano)'.”

The appearance of Githead and the release of their debut EP Headgit in 2004 surprised many, not only with the unlikely “front line” of Wire’s Colin Newman (Gtr., Vox), Minimal Compact’s Malka Spigel (Bass, Vox) & Scanner’s Robin Rimbaud (Gtr.) but also with the cyclic, hypnotic funkiness not to mention the avant-pop sensibility the outfit produces.

Their debut album “Profile” takes the story and sound-scape of Githead wider & deeper. With the addition of Max Franken (also of Minimal Compact) on drums the band has become “a small mobile unit” capable of delivering - emotional power, as on the opener “Alpha” and the epic “Raining Down” – driving grooves, as in “Option Paralysis” or the frenetic shouty bagginess of the snappily named “Cosmology for Beginners” – or indeed sublime pop lusciousness like “My LCA (Little Box of Magic)”.
With only a handful of live shows so far the band most recently secured a presence at London’s annual Ether Festival on the South Bank where in the words of one reviewer they were “Sleek, honed, calculated and sharp - and brilliant!” More of this finery will follow this year.

Those of you who've already read the NME's scathing 2 star review of Autechre's latest album (their 8th) will probably already have an idea of just how good this record is. (is it me or have the bloc chiefs been on the cover every week now for the last 37817 weeks?) So, pending an extended session on Zane Lowe's radio show and a personal invite to hang out with jools holland at the Beeb, Sean Booth and Rob Brown have assembled their gear with a typical lowkey swagger that always manages to hide the quietly revolutionary work being presented. Just remember - this is music for plouing LOUD, stick to this single principle and this album will mess with your mind, limbs and stomach in ways you'll have almost forgotten. "Untilted" is a gargantuan, banging beast - their finest material since the seminal LP5, and that really is saying something. Frighteningly good. ..

The Remote Viewer - Let Your Heart Draw A Line

It's in bedroom studios, where the always present humming noise of a guitar amp is more important than the latest plugin, where you'll find The Remote Viewer quietly pieceing together their remarkable, effervescent take on minimal songwriting. Craig Tattersall and Andrew Johnson simply do what they are best at : writing incredible songs. Be it as members of Hood in the early days, be it as the "Famous Boyfriend" or in their current guise, these songs (deeply quiet, almost shy) are composed in a way that's so intimate you wonder how Andrew, Craig and Nicola (on loan here from her sublime Empress project) ever allowed them to leave the studio. "Let Your Heart Draw A Line" picks up where the band's last album left off, willing you through quiet negotiation to crawl into your speakers, just to make sure that you don't miss out on any whispered sounds or quiet declarations of love. There are cascading guitars, toy instruments, indecipherable twinkles and an other-worldly vocal that's caressed by miniature glitch erruptions and the crackle of a recording process that re-defines the concept of "organic". This is a band who have long since declared "quiet is the new loud", but "Let Your Heart Draw A Line" is by far their most moving and complete assertion to date - a glowing album that's impossible to contain within fixed superlatives or points of reference. This is where minimalism takes itself away from cold, clinical studios and academic realms and into a world drawn in brightest multicolour and a thousand shades of blue. Breathtaking music....
Michel Waisvisz - In Tune

This 23 years in the making (you read right!) album marks the culmination of STEIM director Michel Waisvisz' decades of sonic experimentation, all culled from his rare appearances in semi-live studio recordings. Kicking off with the clumsy scratching and bargain-bin Casio beats of 'One for the Road', it soon becomes clear that Waisvisz is enthralled by the minutia of sound, a fact borne out by the fragmentary 'Dutch Hop (Ouverture)'. Seemingly taking cues from 1970's kids TV show theme-tunes, it may well begin in a land of whimsy but just when you presume you've got it bagged and tagged, Waisvisz contrasts it utterly with a latter half of baroque atmospherics and walls of chiming synth that trail some unsettling vocal manipulation. This disregard of preconceptions continues on 'A Cheval' where Waisvisz serves up a jaunty melody that is at once utterly familiar and totally evasive through a box of tools that you'll recognise, the difference here being that it was recorded in 1977! Strange and challenging; headmash stuff!...

Six dynamic pieces featuring a wide range of sound sources and compositional styles, from angelic choirs of electronically altered pianos, to hardcore hip-hop transmissions and polyphonic noise symphonies. A live recording of John Coltrane's 40 year-old 'Ascension', this interpretation sees an all-star ensemble that included a spectrum of artists from The Rova Saxophone Quartet and guitar ace Fred Frith through to Ikue Mori and turntablist Otomo Yoshihide. Performed live in 2003 with only one run through, Orkestrova's 'Ascension' is a multi-headed beast that revels in free-jazz and whilst often overbearing and confusing, never loses sight of Coltrane's original composition. Accompanied by extensive liner notes on the history and circumstances of the music contained within, 'Orkestrova plays Ascension' is a must for anyone remotely interested in any strain of jazz....
The Contemporary Jazz Quintet - Actions 1966-67

For many free music fans outside Denmark, this disc will be a revelation. The Contemporary Jazz Quintet was an active part of the European free jazz movement, and trumpeter Hugh Steinmetz and alto saxophonist Franz Beckerlee were also visible in other parts of that international scene. The core of the ensemble, including bassist Steffen Andersen was formed as a quartet in `59, reportedly playing hard-bop in the Miles Davis/John Coltrane vein. When Ornette Coleman's first recordings appeared in Denmark, the band's direction was definitively changed, and they began playing Coleman's pieces, delving extensively into his songbook and beginning to experiment with freeplay. In `64, Bo Thrige Andersen took the drum chair; his cymbal playing was clearly influenced by Sonny Murray, with whom the band had recorded on ACTION, the first of its three LPs released on the Danish Debut label and Fona. In `65, the ensemble made a record, THIRD STREAM MUSIC(Fona), with classical composer/performer Niels Viggo Bentzon....

Not sure what album # this is from the new school hip hop's prime hip hop poet as previous work's have not quite hit with the required essentialness to get logged in my cluttered and mushy brain matta. Now well clear it seems of Rick Rubins American label, this album is on through Wichita for this UK license. Guests on this slice of post rap intelligencia include Thavius Beck (Mush), Isaiah Ikey Owens (Mars Volta), Zack De La Rocha (Rage Against The Machine, where's the DJ Shadow hook up joint?) and Plug Research's Mia Doi Todd. Some tracks feature the metal grinding style associated with his Rick Rubin production joints, vocals adapting standard spit rap one moment then half sung the next but always topically interesting as you'd expect from the man behind the classic 'Twice The First Time'. Pretty much as eclectic a hip hop as you can get in 2005, one for fan's of the last heavy, heavy Dalek CD on Ipecac for starters and any one else who likes grit mixed in with there daily nutrition program....
Caribou - The Milk Of Human Kindness

Having lost his name in a frankly baffling legal escapade with ex-Dictator 'Handsome Dick Manitoba', Dan Snaith has shrugged off his former moniker, emerging from the cocoon as Caribou and, if 'The Milk of Human Kindness' is anything to go by, then a protracted legal blindside would seem to sharpen the musical senses considerably. Moving away from the smudged chalk mural sound that was 2003's 'Up in Flames', Snaith has tightened his production up considerably (taking it back to 'Dundas, Ontario' territory) whilst simultaneously moving his sound forward. Opening with the eulogistic sunshine pop of 'Yeti', Caribou assumes vocal duties as Brian Wilson washes and agitated metronome strings swell joyously, bringing to mind a vitamin C drenched re-reading of Kraut rock. Snaith's skill has always been in making variegated and structurally complex music that appears utterly unpremeditated, with the balls-out epic of 'A Final Warning' a perfect example, unfolding as it does in the most natural fashion imaginable. Elsewhere, 'Lord Leopard' is a bouncing B-Boy double-take of the Ski Sunday theme tune whilst album closer 'Barnowl' is a rimy and penetrating Four Tet-esque collision of heavy percussion and florid aural bursts that leaves you with a real sense of foreboding. Check!...
Matt Elliot - Drinking Songs

Shedding his Third Eye Foundation moniker for the second time, Matt Elliot has retreated to France from his native Bristol and, on the basis of new album 'Drinking Songs', has struck up an acquaintance with the fabled wormwood. Moving into the deeper and darker territory hinted at by 'The Mess We Made', 'Drinking Songs' makes apparent its outlook from the tarnished Parisian artwork through to the swaying, bohemian folk contained within. Opening with 'C.F. Bundy', the listener is confronted by an individual's battle with demons (both real and imagined), set to an utterly mournful and bewitching set of strings and faintly glimmering piano. Curving away from this, 'Trying to Explain' approaches its subject through Burlesque accompaniment and deep-throat vocals whilst Eastern European folk is given a go on the caliginous 'What's Wrong'. Yet without a doubt the albums centrepiece is the awe-inspiring vocal tapestry of 'The Kursk' (featuring the breathtaking cello of Chris Cole, the mind behind the unbeleivable "Many Fingers" album), wherein Elliot's voice blends with haunting choral chasms and Proust punctured lyrics to produce a dizzyingly grand 9 minutes. Incredibly moving music and another quiet masterpiece - enough to make you an alcoholic......
The Zincs - Dimmer

Led by the Chicago based UK ex-pat Jim Elkington, The Zincs are comprised of various leftfield luminaries (Nathaniel Braddock of Ancient Greeks, Butchershop Quartet and Nick Macri of Bobby Conn and Euphone amongst them) who came together formally after the release of their 'Ohio Gold' debut. Unafraid of a visible string section, album opener 'Breathe in the Disease' subscribes to all the prog-indie clichés (think Sparklehorse) with acoustic interludes and soaring orchestration, but rather than drown in syrup it somehow escapes the saccharine and becomes a touching ode to life's regrets ("I should have stayed at school..."). Undoubtldy influenced by 1960's transatlantic folk, 'Beautiful Lawyers' cranks up the tempo and introduces some unfamiliar electronics with a result that is comparable to both Belle and Sebastian and (hold your breath!) Snowpatrol... Elsewhere there is heavy-lidded pysch-folk on 'Bad Shepards', buoyant guitar pop on 'Moment is Now!' and shuffling acoustica on the sweet, but weighty, 'Passengers' all of which are elevated by Elkington's Cave/Cohen vocals....
Gang Gang Dance - God's Money

Emerging from a year long gestation period at Junkyard Audio Salvage, the second album (God's Money) from Gang Gang Dance sees the band taking their familiar concoction of electronics, synths, guitars and assorted studio detrius, then blending them to the Colonols very own recipe. Opening with a nicotine stained Delta Blues riff, first song 'Nomad For Love' lays out the bands wares with a thumping rhythm and all manner of abstract vocals. Avant at heart, it is nonetheless an eminently listenable opening salvo that soon melts away into The Go! Team-esque rainbow blur of 'Ego War', wherein clotted rhythms and ear-piercing bollywood strings are wound around a startling vocal performance. Providing a bit of respite, the hushed tones of 'Before My Voice Fails' see some Kate Bush giddiness grafted onto gently swelling production that manages to incorporate some panpipes without evoking the demon spirit of Enigma! All in all 'God's Money' is like a less avant Asa Chang and Junray, but is no less vital because of it. Closing with the beatific 'Glory In Itself' (which, incidentally, is covered in Squarepusher's Iambic Five Poetry' fingerprints) Gang Gang Dance have conjured a thoroughly cohesive whole from a years worth of studio time. An aural narghile....

This record should come with a free battered mirror-ball and bottle of 60% proof bourbon! Taking a rock&roll (in the most horrible sense) template then pouring sleazy electro and re-fried techno through it may sound like something from the heady days of 2001, but that's precisely what Quasimodo Jones has done on 'Robots and Rebels'. "Not another knowing electro-glam rock album" we hear you groan, and to that we'd say...erm, "yes". This Hakan Lidbo produced record instils its familiar appearance with a measure of wit that would work great in a highschool essay but, unfortunately, does nothing for these rebellious pair of ears....

Cloud Plate, by never being anything less than intrusive, is rarely an easy listen. Dissonance abounds; things are often so nebulous and tenuous as to provide few handles to grasp. And yet, with sensibilities that come from as far afield as free jazz, multi-ethnicity, electronically generated music concrete, and the avant garde, Cloud Plate manages to assert its own complexion. It's not for the faint of heart, but those with an open mind and unrestricted imagination will find Cloud Plate never less than completely compelling.
