Nowhere is the wielding of the personalized technology –for information and individual expression– more a matter of course than for Icelanders. On invitation from Icelandair MIC took the trip to find out more and witness this year’s special Norwegian feature, which entailed the presenting of three of the currently most exciting Norwegian acts.

Few modern electronic acts are able to create songs with such immediate appeal and warmth without sacrificing substance and envelope-pushing. The Junior Boys broke loose in 2004 with the release of Last Exit (followed by its rerelease on the relatively massive Domino imprint). Their smooth grooves picked up some heft and sallied forth with So This is Goodbye, their recent, and equally tasty/beloved long-player. MICHAEL MAYER – IMMER 2

“(MAYER) expertly scouts and attracts the talent, sequences the tracks, and sets the tone for the entire sound” – Pitchfork (Fabric 13 review)

It’s been a long and prosperous road for MICHAEL MAYER since the 2002 release of his mix CD IMMER - proclaimed as a genre-defining moment for minimal house and techno, the praise from fans and the media was nothing short of overwhelming, throwing KOMPAKT’s co-founder and musician into the spotlight as one of the worlds favourite DJ’s and dance music tastemakers.

Since then, MICHAEL MAYER has been a very busy guy and certainly hasn’t ceased to continue to provoke the ears and tastes of thousands. In 2003, he was invited by the esteemed London club FABRIC the mix FABRIC 13. One of the strongest selling FABRIC releases in the series, XLR8R recently proclaimed it as one of the 100 most influential albums of it’s time and PITCHFORK called him “one of the year’s most vital artists, a sort of weatherman who determines which way the wind blows in Berlin, Cologne, and any place where ears are cocked.”. But it was 2004 that proved to be a landmark year for MICHAEL MAYER thanks to the release of his debut solo full-length “TOUCH”. Stating that he “took a very personal approach to this record. I wanted to get as close as possible to the ideal of a techno track”, MAYER succeeded on all aspects and thoroughly translated as a producer the depth and dynamic he’s been able to accomplish as a DJ. He spent the following year relentlessly touring around the globe and inbetween managing to continue his duties as co-A&R for KOMPAKT and manage operations of the company’s distribution wing. Over the past year Michael’s found inspiration in the recording studio where he’s managed to churn out remixes for many, including MISS KITTIN, NATHAN FAKE, DEPECHE MODE and his teenage heroes the PET SHOP BOYS. It’s certain that 2007 will see the emergence of his new project together with SUPERPITCHER aptly named SUPERMAYER.

But let’s get back to what we’re here for…IMMER 2. Following up the fanfare and acclaim surrounding the first IMMER couldn’t have been easy and to say that IMMER 2 has been highly anticipated is truly an understatement. Rolling on with the cliché, the process has been slow but absolutely worth the wait. MICHAEL MAYER took a year to compile the tracklisting that you see and hear now – these tunes are truly integral parts of his DJ sets and hold a strong personal relationship to him. IMMER 2 continues where the first left off, offering a panoramic view of the current scene and a hopeful glimpse into the future. So what separates this mix from the rest of them out there you may ask? MICHAEL MAYER’s mixing abilities add a distinct level of personality and charm that relates to the classic procedure of elevation and drive yet he incomparably transforms dance tunes into song like you’ve never heard. Highlights include the heavenly static intro from up-and-comer SOMEONE ELSE (Foundsound), the Detroit-esque whispers from CROWDPLEASER & ST. PLOMB (Mental Groove Limited), the devastating disco transition that TODD TERJE’s remix of LINDSTROM (Feedelity) brings to drive this mix it’s peak. And of course, SUPERMAYER’s epic remix of the underappreciated GEIGER (Firm).

“For new dance music, the Kompakt label has led the aesthetic pack for the decade so far with it's particular taste, commitment to quality and unifying design. Thanks to numerous US visits, a winning personality and a gamut of high-profile remixes, co-owner Michael Mayer is Kompakt's most accessible star. Immer 2 is the follow-up to Mayer's best-selling mix CD Immer. Mayer's label debut is regarded as one of the best techno mix CDs ever and the sequel will be met with equal acclaim. From the cover of XLR8R to high-society New York dance parties to Coachella 2006, Mayer rocks them all.”

  Apse - Spirit

DOTSHOP.SE profile Apse - Spirit [Apse are a US band with a similar electronic-rock sound to 120 Days]

Acuarela Discos (NOIS1063CD)
Release Date: November 27th, 2006

APSE consist of five lads from the East Coast who have been playing together – with slight changes in line-up – during the last 7 years, creating one of the most serious and inspired sounds of today: the nerve of slowcore, bits of post-rock dynamics and avant-garde perceptions; beauty, darkness and tension. They showcase a solid, potent and mature musical sense with influences spanning classical compositions, Slint, Joy Division-New Order, and The Cure – to the first Sonic Youth noise adventures, ambient music and a wide range of post-punk.

Upon listening to the record, none of the band's influences are immediately clear. Spirit absorbs the listener in rough, bold percussion and dark, churning basslines, arguably referencing The Liars' 2006 Drum's Not Dead or the locking cyclical rhythm of early Echo And The Bunnymen. Over a hard-hitting bass-and-drum core, ethereal guitars, haunting vocals, and quiet synths nod to the Cure's Pornography, Disintegration, or B-Sides from Radiohead's Kid A.

Listen to Apse on myspace

Dark, atmospheric rock, with an emphasis on rhythm. Themes that address issues of control, in relationship to interpersonal circumstances / spiritual entities that surround us. Damaged pop, pounding percussion, reverberated drones.

Top 200 albums based on djmartian's friend list - Rate Your Music

rateyourmusic.com continues to innovative with new features, recently they introduced a top 200 albums list feature based on your friends [public, also only displayed on your profile if mutual linked] & favorites [set as private] - i.e other rateyourmusic.com users

I have over 100+ favourites, these are mainly rateyourmusic.com users that have caught my interest from their lists / reviews / ratings / with some similar music interests or who i know from elsewhere on the internet e.g blogs or ILM etc.

The demographics range from some smart teenagers, to 20somethings, and to people of a similar age to myself i.e 30somethings and finally there are some over 40s. Location wise a combination of Americans, Canadians, Australians, Brits and some other European countries [e.g Dutch, Norwegian, Poles, Germans, Belgians.]

What's interesting if you add a new friend / favorite rym user [that has album ratings] then the top 200 will auto adjust immediately. So I will continue to add in favorites in the future and see how the top 200 develops.

Top 200 albums based on djmartian's friend list - Rate Your Music

So these are the current top 200 albums: [not bad for a sample just over 100 people, both in terms of quality and diversity of music represented.]

However there a few odd selections from artists i just don't appreciate e.g Magnetic Fields.

Under represented: 1980s & electronic music - may be i need to find some rym users with these music interests to counter balance the love of bob dylan and the 90s/00s Magnet magazine & Pitchfork approved artists [Magnetic Fields, Pavement, The Shins, Modest Mouse, Built to Spill] etc that don't interest me.

Mahogany will finally release their much anticipated album Connectivity! next week.

As Minimal Robot states:

This near-mythical album has been delayed for so long I can hardly believe I'm typing this, but the new Mahogany CD is now actually ready to order from Darla. If a perfect blend of shoegaze, Factory, and electronics sounds good to you, then don't hesitate to check this out. This album is going to give the new Junior Boys some album-of-the-year competition.

Smalltown Supersound reported last month: new Bjørn Torske album Feil Knapp due January 12th 2007

Yes! Bjørn Torske returns with a killer album titled "Feil Knapp" (Wrong Button in Norwegian) the 12th of January 2007. We have just heard the album and it rocks! Filled with typical Torske dub, some quirky electronica, some disco, some weirdness. But so melodic. So wonderful. And so Bjorn Torske! Fans of his other great albums "Nedi Myra" and "Trøbbel" will love this one. The 22nd of January we will release another 12" titled "Kokt Kveite". Before this Torske will tour Japan (see live dates). And in 2007 there will be lots of touring. More info soon.
