Futuresonic 2009 and the Social Technologies Summit will take place 13-16 May 2009, featuring world premieres of astonishing artworks, an explosive city-wide music programme, and visionary thinkers from around the world. The festival has four strands - Art, Music, Ideas and EVNTS - and occupies the orbits of art, performance, music, design and digital culture. Now in its 14th year, Futuresonic is the UK's leading festival for digital culture, and this year was nominated for the prestigious Lever Arts Prize. An urban festival experience, it is anticipated that over 50,000 festival visitors will engage with 300 artists and 100 events across 30 venues.

Music: Futuresonic | Music

The best, most explosive, most all-encompassing Futuresonic music lineup to date, covering genres as diverse as dubstep, contemporary classical, lo-fi indie, electronica, deep house, math rock, leftfield hip-hop and italo disco.

A breathtaking AV show by Mexican electronic pioneer Murcof, a highly anticipated UK performance from Icelandic composer Johann Johannsson, and the legendary NYC based hip-hop crew Anti-Pop Consortium. Plus Kode 9, for many the UK's hottest DJ, headlining a showcase of UK bass music, and the finger-picking prowess of guitarist Marnie Stern, hailed as 2009's most exciting rock act by New York Times.

Social Technologies Summit: Social Technology Summit | Social Technologies Summit

2 albums announced at Norway's Beatservice Records:

The Electones

Not quite new though, the guys behind The Electones are Jens Petter Nilssen and Hallvard Wennersberg Hagen, which you may know as Xploding Plastix. But The Electones is something quite different. They have been working on this side project since 2002, with two 12"-releases on the British label Inertia in 2002 and 2003. Since then, they have steadily been working on the debut album up until autumn 2008. In the meantime, Inertia has closed down, and Beatservice Records is very happy to release The Electones' debut album "If You'll Be Null, I'll Be Void". An album that can be described as 60's folk meets early electronica with a dose of Lanois...

Release date: 23rd of March (Norway/digital, a bit later on export).
BS113 The Electones: If You'll Be Null, I'll Be Void

Flunk

Later in the spring, it is finally time for a new album from Flunk.

Anja, Jo and Ulf have this time left the pop format from the two previous albums. You still get the familiar bitter-sweet pop songs, but the album is darker and more electronic, and rougher beats, a step to the left, with hints back to the debut album. "This Is What You Get" is the title, a quote from the cover song that they have a nice tradition of including.
Release date: 11th of May (world wide & digital)

MUTEK’S CONTINUING TRADITION OF INTERNATIONALISM

As always, the ideal of presenting the most forward-thinking and uncompromised talents from around the world is our guiding motivation, and in this respect MUTEK_10 already promises to be as global and ambitious as ever, with these first 28 performers hailing from ten countries. As has become the expectation, MUTEK pays homage to the ideal of internationalism by bringing pioneering practitioners from around the globe to Montreal.

Wolfgang Voigt brings his seminal GAS project to Montreal for what is certain to be an exceptional North American premiere. Not to be outdone, for this year’s edition Japan’s Ryoji Ikeda and Germany’s Carsten Nicolai will also present the North American premiere of their legendary and rare CYCLO collaboration, which will headline a special Raster-Noton showcase. Germany’s Burnt Friedman and Jaki Liebezeit (ex-Can) return to Montreal for a rare North American performance, while fellow Germans Apparat and Modeselektor pair up as the mighty analog trio of MODERAT.

Meanwhile, MUTEK is extremely pleased to be collaborating with RESIDENT ADVISOR in assembling an exciting two-room, all-night event to be headlined by none other than Detroit’s Carl Craig, who will be sharing the stage with France’s dOP and Germany’s tobias. Otherwise, Latin Americans by birth or choice are represented in spades, with names such as AtomTM, Dandy Jack, and Original Hamster from Chile; Nego Moçambique from Brazil; and Nortec Collective’s Bostich and Fussible leading five traditional Mexican musicians through a rousing showcase that exemplifies the bridges between tradition and experimentation at the roots of MUTEK.

  SPOT festival - Denmark

Festival for upcoming Danish and Nordic artists: SPOT festival in Aarhaus, Denmark

May 21st-23rd

about: SPOT

The SPOT festival is supported and sustained by a very large section of Danish music in rock, pop and related genres.

The SPOT festival has 4 main goals:

* To focus primarily on the newer Danish and Nordic music production
* To bridge the gap between artistic ambitions and the commercial potential of the music
* To support and further the cultural qualities of the music
* To contribute in developing international networks through exchange of concerts and cultural and commercial experience.

The ambition of the SPOT festival is to create a promotion platform for the Danish and Nordic music. The festival’s repertoire is dictated chiefly by the will to support new bands and artists that are of a quality to succeed internationally.

The line-up comprises both debutants as well as more established artists who are recognized as being of interest to either national or international music promoters, cultural institutions or media.

  Cobalt - Gin

Press Release via Profound Lore Records email: new album: COBALT - Gin

Prior to its official March 17th St. Patrick's Day release date, we are now selling the new highly-anticipated monumental album by Colorado duo COBALT exclusively through our website.

The soundtrack to the strong inheriting the earth, “Gin” is a dark, eerie, and violent outburst that takes Cobalt’s surreal avant-war/left-field black metal approach and tears it into new epic and ritualistic proportions. A sonic fist fuck like no other, going more for the throat and plunging further into the depths, “Gin” is a study of torment, violence, strong excess, hard sex, and despair through a harsh and very real terrain the duo of Sergeant Phil McSorley and Erik Wunder have wandered within upon in recent times. This is reality.

Like an epic diseased black metal interpretation of NEUROSIS, SWANS, HIGH ON FIRE, TOOL, and KILLING JOKE, “Gin” sees Cobalt shifting their sound in a sense where more substance and depth becomes layered through the ritualistic and tribal rhythms found within the music, all while maintaining the violent and harsh nature that Cobalt’s music has always been characterized by.

Being hailed as one of the most unique and distinct entities that has spawned out of the U.S. black metal underground, with “Gin”, Cobalt have proven once again that no extreme metal band within the U.S. have come close to capturing an aesthetic and power that McSorley and Wunder have conjured.

Dedicated to literary vanguards Ernest Hemingway and Hunter S. Thompson, “Gin” also remains one of the first, and few extreme metal albums to introduce classic American literature and tearing into the heart of American culture. Overall, “Gin” is the springboard to fuck the universe.

Tracklisting for “Gin” goes as follows:

1. Gin
2. Dry Body
3. Arsonry
4. Throat
5. Stomach
6. A Clean, Well Lighted Place
7. Pregnant Insect
8. Two Thumbed Fist
9. The Old Man Who Lied For His Entre Life
10. A Starved Horror

Jessie Evans

2009 album: Gothtronic | News: JESSIE EVANS Presents Solo Album Is It Fire?

Jessie Evans’ first solo album "IS IT FIRE?” was recorded between Berlin and Mexico. The songs feature live drums and percussion by Toby Dammit (Iggy Pop, Swans) and guest musicians Budgie (The Creatures, Siouxsie and The Banshees), Martin Wenk (Calexico), and Namosh. Recorded in part by Thomas Stern (Einstürzenden Neubauten, Crime and The City Solution) and mixed/ co-produced in Tijuana by Pepe Mogt (Nortec Collective).

....

Although Jessie spent the past decade playing in bands built from the blood of previous generations in the 70/ 80s punk rock new wave vein, such as San Francisco’s The Vanishing, Autonervous (with Bettina Koster of Malaria!) and the all girl garage goth quartet Subtonix, as well as collaborating with numerous artist such as Glass Candy, Hanin Elias (Atari Teenage Riot), it wasn’t until she got her taste of a drum machine that she truly discovered a unique sound.
