This Week's New Releases @ Boomkat

This week's new releases @ BOOMKAT - A PELICANNECK ELECTRONIC MUSIC STORE include:

Ms. John Soda - Drop = Scene - Morr Music cd single

New on Morr Music!! Ms. John Soda are Stefanie Bhm and Micha Acher, both part of the creative sphere that has given birth to Lali Puna,The Notwist and The Tied and Tickled Trio. Micha Acher is a core member of the highly acclaimed band The Notwist, and the mastermind behind the jazz hybrids of the revered Tied and Tickled Trio. Stefanie Bhm, meanwhile, plays keyboards with Munich-based instrumentalists Couch. The pair have been collaborating on a part-time basis for the last 10 years, with ms. john soda being their little pop project, finally given a widescreen airing on this superb new single. 'drop = scene' takes unusual steps towards a new pop direction, one where the melody, clarity, emotional directness and timelessness of song structures supersedes the importance of aural experimentation. Employing an array of accoustic instruments including bass, guitar, drums and keyboards - with a constant glance at the careful balance between instruments and electronics. This lovely 4-tracker includes a reworking from Lali Puna's Florian Zimmer - a small epic, almost twice as long as the original, and a second remix courtesy of roberto di gioia, a jazz pianist who pursues electronic projects walking a tightrope between reduction and kitsch, always sticking to the sublime. Fans of Broadcast, Stereolab and, off course, Lali Puna watch out!!

Dryft - The Mytotyc Exyt - Component

Dryft are basically behind the minidisc (recently vinyl and cd) label N5MD, as well as being one half of Gridlock, who put out an excellent mini album some weeks ago the Hymen label from Berlin. "39thieves" stings us to attention immediately, large drums and bass reminiscent of no less than DJ Shadow on "Midnight in a perfect world" riding celestial top end, strings brooding and sombre, with eastern touches in the frame drums and an incredibly haunting refrain. "Dibt2e" and the title cut both fracture and mangle some prime hip hop, think Machine Drum only better, and match it with daydreaming, heavily developed melodies to orchestral effect. These two strands make this album in fact unmissable, the fascination with rhythms of all kind tempered by a remarkable ear for arrangement and melody. Three remixes round out the package, and as we listen it grows - this is, unreservedly recommended, accomplished iDM of a finely tuned nature. Acquire.

Max Tundra - Mastered By Guy At The Exchange - Domino

A record that you will absolutely either love or hate, common opinion amongst us nekkers here in the office is that Mr Tundra is quite simply a musical genius, operating alone within his distinctly abnormal and mishhapen world of pop. With his career sprouting from a killer EP for Warp 4 years ago, Bens sound has shifted from electronic multi-instrumentalisms to the modern-compositional strokes showcased on his fantastic debut album for Domino Some Best Friend You Turned Out To Be, and, finally, to his new concoction - MBGATE - an altogether more steroid-fuelled, multi-coloured, pop-inspired, vocal-drenched and wonderfully eccentric album which will leave many poor souls dumbfounded, while the rest of us party! To pinpoint the sound here would be a job too complex for this particular reviewer, instead, here are some points of reference : Jim Orourke, The Bee Gees, Steve Reich, Frederik Schikowski, Mum, Sybarite, Boo Radleys, The Beta Band, Aphex Twin....Blend these all together in a Magimix and serve with an icy cocktail and umbrella. Ace!

Miles Tillmann - Underland - Sub:Marine

Hailing from Chicago, Ilinois, there is talk currently linking Miles to future projects for Toytronic. On this lovely release on Sub:Marine, out of Atlanta, Georgia, there's a vista of clear skied ambient warmth opening up above your head, and across the eight tracks a genuine feeling that this guy is going places. "Unfold" brings a purposeful oscillating bassline, a wasp trapped in a miked up hangar topped with iced vocal and spools of delay, the title cut shows deft touches with melody and a goodly dose of the crunch to wreck our heads anew. "Warm/Cool" ushes us into a confessional space, again the melodies floor me. "Derail" ends proceedings with the kind of midtempo beats and lush scenery which brought Casino Vs Japan to our ears two summers ago. Highly recommended

Nightmares On Wax - Mind Elevation - Warp

Limited double CD version includes DJ E.A.S.E.'s 40 mins DJ mix version of the album with many an older track thrown in for good measure. Ahhhh, with summers last gasp Nightmares On Wax return to offer an alternative soundtrack to the stress and strain of modern living. 'Mind Elevation' follows on from the scene stealin classic of its kind 'Smokers Delight' and the more recent 'Carboot Soul'. Long since one man dream, E.A.S.E. - George Evelyn drops downtempo gems neither overstuffed with obvious samples or stipped to oblivion - just right is wat i'm tryin' to say. Opener 'Mind Eye' continues in the vain of 'Les Nuits', soundtrack styled crisp beats and lush string drops, the single 'Know My Name' gets better on every listen plus the other rustic r'n'b at its best. This style is for the whole set landing with the injection of subtle live insteumentation on the closer 'Thoughts', another N.O.W. winner.

Phantomsmasher - Phantomsmasher - Ipecac

Phantomsmasher are: (the Atomsmasher you know and love) Dave Witte (Drums), DJ Speedranch (AudioMulch Vocals), and James Plotkin (Bass, Guitar, Synthi, Wave Editing). Pushing the boundaries of Hardcore, Grind, Electronica and mentallism through radical experimentation. A masterful meeting between violent rock and violent electronics. As Speedy himself says : "Its energy, its power, its evil, its beautiful, its emotional, its hell and heaven rolled into one big fat blunt, smoked like a motherf***er." Oh yes.

Barry Adamson - The King Of Nothing Hill - Mute

Born and bred in Moss Side, Manchester, Barry Adamson has had a prolific career starting with being the former bassist in Magazine and a founder member of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Since then Barry has developed his own unique sound of soulful funk and "The King of Nothing Hill" is Barry's most accessible album yet : funk, beats, soul, jazz and more Adamson journeys into jis dark
imaginary-soundtrack world......

ESG - Step Off - Soul Jazz

First wax from the ESG girls in more than ten years. Brought back into the spotlight via Soul Jazz's issue of the essential compilation 'South Bronx Story' a year or so ago, the girls have thrown themselves back into the disco/punk/hip hop hybrid that they crafted so well in the 80s. With an old school running time of 32 mins (If only more records were shorter and sweeter!), this is a truly enjoyable record from a legendary crew. Welcome back.

Giddy Motors - Make It Pop - Fat Cat

Following hot on the heels of their debut single Whirled By Curses , Make It Pop delves further into their taut, idiosyncratic take on rock. Recorded with Steve Albini at Electrical Audio studios in Chicago over a nine day period in the Autumn of 2001, the eight tracks here take in a range of styles and ideas, though for the most part, these are intense, wayward, and strangely anglicised songs set to tight, chaotic chord progressions and jagged, acrobatic percussion. Utilising drums, bass, guitar and vocals to full effect with drums also triggering occassional saxophone samples, their songs are explosive and prone to suddenly flip back on themselves or fly off at unexpected angles. The album sets out its stall from the full-on AmRep/Sabbath punk of the opening track, Magmanic, and this formula provides the backbone of the album. Yet the bands ability to transcend the genre (witness the more reflective Cranium Crux, the pastoral acousticism of Venus Medallist, the 23 Skidoo / Pop Group-style rhythms that pervade the album), sets them apart from any scene as such. Chaotic, energetic and aggressive, perhaps more than anything, Giddy Motors sound like a band locked into their own thing, intensely focused and happy to explore their own wayward logic.

Fernando Corona has released with Martes the most exiting and evocative record of the year so far. Mixing modern classical with micro-beats, his music is like nothing else around. SQUAREPUSHER - Do You Know Squarepusher

Do you think you know Squarepusher? Well, think again. The Pusher is
back, he's in fantastic form, and he's fucking everyone
around! Be told

BOOM BIP - Seed To Sun

One of the best producers around, Boom Bip follows his album with
Doseone with another slice of twisted Hip-Hop, released on the new
Warp offshoot label Lex Records.

BOVINE LIFE +/v KOMET - Reciprocess +/v Vol. 1

Scotland's Bovine Life meets Germany's Komet in this first in
the Reciprocess +/vs split series co-curated by Philippe Petit, head
of Bip-Hop, and Christopher Murphy, the man behind Fllt.

GUS GUS - Attention

Everything had become very quiet on the Gus Gus front since the
departure of a few of the original members, but the core of the band
is back with a album that takes their sound into new territories.

INKBLOT - Love Your Mother

More organic textures from Texan Jeremy Ballard. The man follows his
excellent first album with a record that mixes found sounds, live
instrumentations and electronic distortions.

ISAN - Clockwork Menagerie

Isan have become something of a legend, mostly due to the release of
now hard to find brilliant EPs and singles, collected for the first
time on this essential record.

SYBARITE - Nonument

After releasing a compilation of rare tracks and writing the
soundtrack to Kill Me Tomorrow, Xian Hawkins finally releases the
first Sybarite album. Delicate and restrained, the music is evocative
and intelligently produced.

SUSUMU YOKOTA - The Boy & The Tree

Yokota is without a shadow of a doubt the most prolific musician of
his generation. This new album is a mesmerising collection of
inspired ambient music, resounding with echoes of oriental music and
found sounds.

DJ Martian's Page - Ranked 32nd Most Visited British Blog

Mike @ troubled diva weblog has done a technical analysis of the British weblogs with the most internet traffic,

Yet Another Totally Meaningless, Statistically Dubious, And Slightly Annoying Chart Of UK Weblogs.

I was surprised that I am in the top 50 (considering that most general weblogs have never linked to me, only two weblogs above me that i am aware of have linked to this weblog in the past), this weblog was ranked 32nd.

32. DJ Martians Page (1071) (-,-)
The sound of a kick drum banging on the door of post-structuralist philosophy, it's a full on celebration of the hyper-plasticity of sound and the joy of rhythm.

The only other music blogs ranked above me are: NYLPM that being a collective website with contributors across the world has a larger readership than mine, and a single band focused weblog for Radiohead iamcal

20= New York London Paris Munich (773) (-,12)
Somewhere in my memory banks (or in my imagination) drifts an ultimate mix of "Two Tribes", with all the best samples, the best builds, the blackest jokes - and of course the disco-pocalyptic nugget of the 'song' itself.
Mike adds: It does indeed exist, and it's the mega-extended cassette single mix, and it will be popping up in my curious old box sometime in the next few weeks.

29= iamcal.com (1071) (5,15)

By the way there are 608 British weblogs listed at the moment, so to make it 32nd thank you readers.

OUTBURN #19 / Sept 2002

Details of the next edition of Outburn magazine, due early in September:

COVER STORY

DEADSY: Pushing the extremes of sinister rock with a metaphysical and scholarly vision, Deadsy attack the senses and the standards of society with a metallic sheen on their highly anticipated debut album, Commencement. Synthpop, grindcore, death metal, industrial, goth, and more fuse together in Deadsys all-seeing concept of mechanized music. Frontman and theorist P. Exeter Blue I goes over the bands evolution of ideas, his manifesto of polarities, and the comprehensive objectives of Deadsy.

IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS WITH

FISCHERSPOONER: Fischerspooner is everywhere. Their name gleams across covers of forward looking publications and drips from the mouths of hipsters combing through record bins for their album, #1. While the music created by Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner is structurally closer to rock than dance music, their single, Emerge has become one of the most infectious and inescapable club tracks of 2002.

DANZIG: Ripping up the hard rock arena for over 25 years, Glenn Danzig brings the mayhem to a climax with the completion of his seven album cycle. And even though 777: I Luciferi is the album that Glenn proclaims is his most satisfying to date, the onslaught and aggression of Danzig is just beginning.

VEX RED: Discovered by Ross Robinson (producer of Korn and Slipknot), Vex Red is drawing comparisons to Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, Tool, and Smashing Pumpkins, and has been hailed as one of the 10 hottest new acts in the UK. Despite the serious overtones of Start with a Strong and Persistent Desire, vocalist Terry Abbott seems like quite a cheerful guy.

CONJURE ONE: With as many releases as Rhys Fulber has been involved in as an artist, remixer, and producer, its hard to believe he hasnt released a solo project before now. His partnership with Bill Leeb in Front Line Assembly and Delerium yielded a dizzying amount of albums and side-projects. Since then, Fulber has been working on Conjure One, an album and project that picks up where Delerium's Karma left off and pushes that sound in a new direction.

DOVES: If Doves merely hinted at feelings of hope and adventure on their debut, Lost Souls, bandmates Jimi Goodwin and twin brothers Jez and Andy Williams now return with Last Broadcast, one of the most life affirming albums of the year.

SWAYZAK: There arent many duos around that consistently crank out mega-delicious grooves with such art house style and punk rock immediacy. With Dirty Dancing fresh in their minds, Taylor and Brown were eager to chat about Swayzaks latest direction, their new label, and, among other things, Patrick Swayzes movie career.

CIRRUS: Cirrus may not be a household name yet, but chances are that if you have been anywhere near a movie theater, television, or video game system in the past year, you are familiar with this Los Angeles based, dance music group.

SIX BY SEVEN: The lyrics for the title track on the new Six By Seven album, The Way I Feel Today, set the mood appropriately. Their blend of the Nottingham flavor into the familiar British guitar rock formula has spawned Six By Seven similar fanbases to bands like Slowdive, Spaceman 3, and The Cure. Talking with frontman ChrisOlley proved to be just as refreshingly blunt as putting their CD in for a spin.

SENTENCED: While many bands moan about the misery we are born into, Sentenced accept and embrace it. Vocalist Ville Laihiala helps illuminate what Sentenced is all about from his point of view, as well as what went into making their latest sterling platter, The Cold White Light.

MISS KITTIN: In a matter of mere months since her voice was first heard across US nightclubs, DJ and chanteuse Miss Kittin has become a figure of iconic stature within the electronic music world. Amidst the barrage of press requests surrounding her recent collaborations and plans for her upcoming solo venture, Miss Kittin cordially took the time participate in an interview and name her Top 10 dance songs of all time.

VOLTAIRE: Voltaire found himself single and wounded after a long-term relationship disintegrated. Thus, his response was to put the pain into song for his third release, the ultimate break up album entitled Boo Hoo. Catching up with Voltaire on Monday night at around 10 PM, the sardonic crooner takes us on a trip through his creative world.

About Palm Pictures...

"We're committed to where our roots are: jamaican music, jazz music, african music, world music, new music" this was how Palm Pictures'* founder Chris Blackwell, described the musical profile of the new label.

Ernest Ranglin featured on Chris Blackwell's first Island Records release in 1958, and the relationship continued with the first release on Palm Pictures, the delightful 'In Search of the Lost Riddim'.

We have releases from Baaba Maal, Da Lata, Jolly Mukherjee with the Madras Cinematic Orchestra, Ethiopian Newcomer, Gigi and Sidestepper. The project that brings together many of Palm's ideals is 1 Giant Leap.

1 giant leap are Jamie Catto (ex-Faithless) and Duncan Bridgeman. 1 Giant Leap, whilst pushing the cutting-edge technology of the 21st century to its limit and utilising their own fierce intelligence and consummate musicality plus a list of collaborators ranging from Michael Stipe to Kurt Vonnegut, Asha Bhosle to Dennis Hopper, have done just that.

1 giant leap has become a unique DVD/LP project for the 21st century which fuses spoken word, sounds, rhythms and images from across the globe to celebrate the creative diversity of a number of musicians, storytellers, authors, film-makers, artists and thinkers from different cultures. The results illustrate breathtaking artistic and cultural diversity with a clear message of unity running through it all.

Its difficult to put your finger on exactly what makes the music so different but different it is. Their beats and basslines have this incredible flowing, rolling quality and theyre continually punctuated with bleeps, dub effects and all manner of electronic trickery. Its a deep, low-down, primal sound that connects instantly with the dancefloor.

If I were an editor of a weekly music magazine this week's front cover would feature: Dalek

It's not everyday that you hear a group pushing themselves to the edge of their abilities. In every way Dlek is the extreme of all musical poles. Musically, Dlek as a collective take the collage aesthetic of the early Bomb Squad productions, infusing Hip Hop with the likes of Faust, My Bloody Valentine, & the Velvet Underground. Lyrically, Dlek as an MC lays down ideas & thoughts far outside of current Hip Hop with influences ranging from Chuck D and KRS One to Langston Hughes, The Last Poets, & Jack Kerouac.

This week's front cover choice is Dlek who will release their album, From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots next week in the UK on the Ipecac label.

Steve Lamacq, or Lammo as he his known has been detrimental to the development of music in this country in the past decade. Bad taste by the bucketload, poor and muddled thinking remember his awful Melody Maker column, Lammo symbolizes everything that is wrong with music radio - it is indeed great news that his time is up ! Exhaust - Enregistreur

CD on Constellation
Released on 16/09/02

Exhaust is a bass, drum & tape trio that crashed through various small Montreal venues in a series of semi-controlled explosions during the mid-90s, with an early vinyl release on constellation appearing in 1998 (cst004; issued on CD in 2000). 'Enregistreur' is an abstract slab of minimalist collage.Bassist Gordon adds bass clarinet on several tracks, while Mike (tapes) & Aidan (drums) deploy loops, signal processing, machine noise & live beats around slow, stripped down, see-saw bass guitar. The result is a chill, vaguely paranoid late night roam through the proverbial deserted city, picking up the occasional sinister, garbled transmission along the way. The cd & lp come in chipboard jackets with lovely saturated ink printing. For Fans Of: Tortoise, Him,

Primer on Ambience/ Ambient Music

An Interesting primer/overview on Ambient music, from a discussion on the electroambientdreampop group:

OK, so let's jump into the 20th century. Early on there was still
Satie, Debussy & Ravel, and those that they influenced. Then, I guess
we could jump to Varse (though he really took what Satie and others
had done and pushed it into new areas; not ambient but excellent
nonetheless), John Cage (prepared piano, and other works in the
30's, 40's and on had ambient elements; he's famous for his "4:33",
perhaps the ultimate "ambient" piece ;-b), and Olivier Messaien
(some unique stuff here from organ works to piano to bird sounds).
Some of Stockhausen, Ligeti & Xenakis' electronic (and vocal for ESP.
Ligeti & Stockhausen) works definitely cross over, and maybe even,
although it's kind of pushing it, the early 50's and 60's works of
musique concrte pioneers like Pierre Schaeffer & Pierre Henry, plus
later material from Bernard Parmegiani & Luc Ferrari. OK, getting
back on track we could head to Morton Feldman, whose piano work in
the 50's & 60's, and boatloads of later string, wind & piano stuffs
was sufficiently minimal & floating. Then we could jump to the
minimalists and their offspring/contemporaries... Terry Riley,
Steve Reich, Philip Glass, La Monte Young (Tony Conrad & John Cale
tied in to him...), Charlemagne Palestine, Pauline Oliveros, Elaine
Radigue, Morton Subotnick, Phil Niblock etc. etc. ... just intonation,
repetition 'n' drones... electronics, piano, organ, voice, the influence
of Indian classical masters. At this point it gets so broad that it's
hopeless so it's just names and influences pushing on through. There
are groups like AMM, MEV, and Ennio Morricone & Franco Evangelisti's
Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza that were blending improv,
jazz, electronics & composition with occasional minimal/drone-like
results (AMM and members were esp. influenced by Feldman). We've got
Krautrockers & electro/psych-droners in the late 60's and 70's merging
drone & ambient with "rock" musics, and even doing straight-up
electronics & film scores... Tangerine Dream, Popul Vuh, Kraftwerk,
Neu!, Prson Sound, Amon Duul II, Kluster/Cluster (Roedelius & Moebius
later worked w/ Eno), Harmonia, Ash Ra Tempel/Manuel Gttsching, Klaus
Schulze etc., who take us through to Vangelis, Eno, Fripp & Harold Budd,
and some of the post-punk/post-industrial folks like Nurse With Wound,
Asmus Tietchens, Nocturnal Emissions, Zoviet France, Lustmord, Coil
& Psychic TV. More names, all great stuff... Thomas Kner, Christoph
Heemann, Paul Schtze, David Toop, James Plotkin, early Jim O'Rourke,
Bernhard Gnter, Alan Lamb, Franois Tetaz, Francisco Lpez, Raphael
Toral, Oren Ambarchi, Yoshio Ojima, Satsuki Shibano, Pete Namlook,
Jonah Sharp, Tetsu Inoue, Terre Thaemlitz, Atom Heart (lots on the Fax
label), the T:me/Em:t label, Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia, various Bill
Laswell projects (Divination... stuff on Axiom/Strata), Death Cube K,
Robert Rich, Vidna Obmana, Oval, Main (ex/post-Loop), O.Rang, Seefeel,
Tactile, Final, Mick Harris/Lull, K.K. Null, Labradford/Pan Am,
Biosphere, Yen Pox/Blood Box, Maeror Tri/Troum, Aube/Sian, Pimmon,
Susumu Yokota, Seed Mouth, Raison D'tre, Inade, Band Of Pain, Gas,
Vladislav Delay, Techno Animal (early + 2CD), E.A.R., some Chain
Reaction stuff like Porter Ricks, and on and on and on...

Some quiet/minimal groups in the jazz/improv scene like The Necks...
stuff in the microsound/electroacoustic improv scene that had some of
it's origins in AMM, Morton Feldman & Euro-free musics... Polwechsel,
some of Otomo Yoshihide & Sachiko M's minimal sine wave electronics...
see much on the Erstwhile label (do a search), and check Jon Abbey's
distribution list if you get into this "out" area.

Aquarius Records - New Arrivals: Number 144

Aquarius Records have delivered another fine selection of reviews, in their latest new arrivals reviews, including some highlighted below:

Nile - In Their Darkened Shrines (Relapse)

Nile, the death metal band obsessed with the grandeur, mystery and mythology of Ancient Egypt, are one of the biggest things in the underground metal world right now (underground meaning NOT Ozzfest or MTV friendly, but with Nile you could also use "underground" in an archeological sense!). This, their third Relapse album, has been hotly anticipated by thousands and thousands of fans worldwide. And not 'cause of the popularity of Hollywood's The Mummy or The Scorpion King. No, Nile owe their following quite deservedly to their own amazing and intense musicianship and atmospheric songwriting. If you were going to buy just one 'extreme' metal album this year, you could do much worse than getting "In Their Darkened Shrines". It's an album of brutal, unrelenting heaviness, utterly insane drumming, shredding solos, and headspinning dynamics -- you'll feel like you've been through a desert sandstorm when they're done -- that's impressively technical, AND majestic, with 'exotic' middle-eastern influenced melodies and textures galore (utilizing their usual guitars, and ethnic instruments, and samples). They're one of those bands -- and this is one of those albums -- that not only belong in every self-respecting metalhead's collection, but would be a good thing for ANY adventurous music lover with an interest in the loud and difficult and imaginative to investigate. While they're not as intentionally avant-garde and 'out there' as Sigh or Enslaved or Weakling or Arcturus, they are as incredible as musicians, and certainly 'out there' when compared to most other death or black metal acts, coming up with violent ten-minute neck-breaking epics worthy of Hollywood, but not the other way around.

Nile are now totally the kings -- er, pharoahs -- of speed/death metal, occupying the throne previously occupied by giants like Morbid Angel and Slayer (both of whom have dabbled in Egyptian imagery before). Very recommended.

Cursor Miner - Explosive Piece of Mind (Lo Recordings)

This album from Cursor Miner (aka Robert Tubb) is a darn sonic rollercoaster ride. A super fun and eclectic album, it starts out with an ominous 40 second digital roar, then proceeds into a Beck-ish slouchy, loping fashion which mutates into more stuttery electronics and bumpity-bump programmed beats like Hrvatski or Kid 606. All chopped up, chunky and playful with a definite pop heart, it blends together acoustic guitars, rubbery blumps and bleeps, samples and processed vocals. Cool.

Dillinger Escape Plan with Mike Patton - Irony Is A Dead Scene (Epitaph)

A new four-song ep from New Jersey's out-of-control mathcore metallers Dillinger Escape Plan, with Mike Patton (Bungle, Fantomas, Faith No More) as guest vocalist! With the unmistakable throat abuse and tuneful croon of Patton, this new Dillinger ep is a bit different from their previous recordings, which were some of the most extreme, complex metalcore efforts ever.

Irony sounds more like a blend of Slipknot (especially with the yappy, almost rap-like vocal cadences of Patton), Melt Banana (again, the 'yiyiyiyiyi yi yi' vocals and sharp dynamic bursts), and Faith No More (when Patton's vocals and the music take turn into more melodic, lush realms). It's still extreme and complex, just less so, which Dillinger fan Andee found a little disappointing, but others might disagree. (Allan's always been *impressed* with Dillinger, but finds 'em hard to listen to, believe it or not -- so this is in some ways an improvement, to him.) Whether you like "Irony" will have a lot to do with your taste for Patton's vox. There will probably be a lot more to like here for fans of Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, Melt Banana, Fantomas or Slipknot than those just looking for a new metallic grind fix. But it could be Dillinger's ticket to a wider audience, which is definitely a good thing!

Oddly enough, not released on Relapse (as with prior DEP discs) or through Patton's Ipecac imprint, but on big punk label Epitaph. Imagine, Tom Waits and Dillinger on the same label, that's getting weird!

Phantomsmasher - s/t (Ipecac)

Perhaps you remember (and/or have in your cd collection) the Atomsmasher cd released by Hydra Head last year? Lead by avant/ambient guitarist James Plotkin (formerly of weird Earache metal band OLD), and featuring drum god Dave Witte (Human Remains/Discordance Axis/Melt Banana/etc.), with processed "AudioMulch" vocals from DJ Speedranch, Atomsmasher got a pretty enthusiastic recommendation from us at the time, as a unique blend of live (but inhumanly played) drums, avant-noise-sampling guitar, and computer-created chaos. Grindcore electronica?

Well, after a ridiculous legal wrangle with some uptight, clueless pop band that apparently had the rights to the name Atomsmasher (and absurdly accused this Atomsmasher of intentionally 'stealing' it), the Plotkin/Witte/Speedranch project changed their moniker to Phantomsmasher. (I think they should have just called themselves Atomsmashersmasher.) Now they've come out with a new cd, on Mike Patton's Ipecac label. At first listen we weren't sure, and thought maybe the original Atomsmasher cd was superior. This one seemed a bit too...post rock. Not quite like Tortoise or Gastr del Sol though, more metallic (but by no means actually metal) and aggro, kinda like Don Cab. Witte's drumming sounds more real, less computerized than before. There's still insane blasting parts, but also some more straight-ahead boom bap. And Plotkin's thick bass slabs get almost funky. From the get go (track one, "Bishop Hopping"), with Speedranch's weirdly child-like Mulched vocals, it reminded us of a Ruins or Hella record, but thrown in a blender on "high". Cool, but not nearly as out-and-out insanely intense as the noisefest of their first album, though still pretty nuts. But things get more interesting as the Phantomsmasher disc goes along. The chaos coalesces into something more like actual songs, not totally random rhythms and noise-eruptions. In its own, densely complex, distorted, and noisy way, it's kinda catchy! Definitely different from the debut, but they've chosen a worthwhile direction to explore.

Radian - Rec.Extern (Thrill Jockey)

Buzz whir click crackle throb. Skittery drums, lovely drone. It's Glitch, but it's Rock. Post rock, anyway. It's the new disc from Radian, the computer-aided instrumental post rock trio from Vienna. Radian have previously released two cds -- a full-length and an ep -- on the Mego and/or Rhiz labels over the past few years. Now they show up with a new full-length on Chicago label Thrill Jockey, enlisting Tortoise's John McEntire on recording/mixing duties. Drummer Martin Brandlmayr lays down the fractured beats, bassist John Norman fills out the pulse, and synthesizer coloration is provided by Stefan Nemeth. And together they use computers to process their real-time playing. Hard disc edits, electronic effects, layered textures, done with a great sense of timing and placement. At times "Rec.Extern" is propulsive and rhythm-driven like a sci-fi This Heat or sliced-up Circle, at others it's atmospheric, the background radiation of a haunted laboratory, with the sounds of burbling beakers and hissing Bunsen burners quietly rising and fading. Sudden silences, sudden sounds. We like it when today's electronic artistes step out from behind their laptops to play real instruments, and Radian falls in line with the likes of Markus Schmickler's Pluramon project and Dean Roberts' "Plays The Grand Cinema" disc on Ritornell as electro-acoustic computers-meet-rock successes. We're also put in mind of the abstract sounds n' silences of Supersilent or Starfuckers (the latter who can be much more 'out' and abrasive than Radian), and recent Dead C. We certainly liked Radian's other releases, but "Rec.Extern" seems to be even better, there's just more to it. Recommended.

Ramleh - Too Many Miles (Dirtier Promotions)

Much has been written here about the recent work of Matthew Bower and his beautiful improv skree in Sunroof (paralleling the massive proliferation of likeminded acts Vibracathedral Orchestra and Birchville Cat Motel); but people often overlook the fact that he began making music in the early '80s as a part of the "Broken Flag" camp - a loose collective of British power electronics technicians and noise rockers, that recorded under the monikers Skullflower, Total, and Ramleh. While Bower was principally the 'figurehead' of the first two and fellow Broken Flag waver Gary Mundy took hold of Ramleh, most of the recording was done with a revolving door membership. Between Skullflower and Ramleh, the Broken Flag camp had produced a noxious arsenal of sludgy noise rock with grim guitar pyrotechnics, crashing upon pummelling rhythm sections, village-idiot basslines and thuggish percussive blasts. These days, the awe-inspiring Skullflower albums "Form Destroyer" and "Birthdeath" are virtually extinct (even, the CD compendium "Ruins" is impossible to find); but fortunately, the old Ramleh stuff is finally available again via this collection of singles. Hopefully this will help keep Broken Flag from dissappearing in the dustbins of musical history.

The formulas for Ramleh (and Skullflower for that matter) were incredibly simple: hammer out a basic rhythm as heavy and as loud as possible, then layer on the angriest and most dissonant blasts of post-Blue Cheer psychedelic freaks outs. Throughout the '80s, Ramleh and Skullflower were pigeonholed as a part of Industrial Culture -- due to their power electronics side projects and associations with Whitehouse; yet as "Too Many Miles" now indicates, this work has much more parallels with the explosive dirges of Neurosis or the incendiary stoner rock of Boris. Really fantastic stuff.

This Week's New Releases @ Boomkat

This week's new releases @ BOOMKAT - A PELICANNECK ELECTRONIC MUSIC STORE include:

Luciano - Live @ Weetamix - Max Ernst

With only the second ever release on Thomas Brinkmanns revered Max Ernst label this outstandingly good (and excellently titled!) Weetamix session from Mental Grooves Luciano has hit us like a bolt out the blue on this fine Summer afternoon. For those of you in need of enlightenment, Mental Groove is Switzerlands answer to Berlins Bpitch Control a house of discoid madness and futuristic electronic exploration. This, however, offers us something a little different from the impossibly cool Luciano. 9 tracks mixed in from start to finish, the aroma here is one of pure innovation, sounds culled from an archive of musical inspiration that makes constant audio reference to Atom Heart, Akufen, Autechre and Brinkmann himself, tracks intricately pieced together from an array of found sounds, layer upon layer of tweaked samples and loops that come together in one giantly impressive stretch of beats and cuts. As live sets go, it really doesnt get much better than this. Killer.

V/A Blue Skied An' Clear - A Morr Music Compilation - Morr Music

Since its humble beginnings some 3 years and 30 releases ago, Morr Music has fast become one of the most important, genre-defining and iconoclastic record labels the independent scene has produced since Warp came along and changed the rules in the early 1990's. This second compilation on the label is set to take us into its next crucial phase. Named after an obscure track by those deepest of all shoegazers Slowdive, Blue Skied An Clear builds on the fact that so many electronic musicians are gradually starting to (re-)discover guitars, acoustics and the dense atmospheric layering of bands like Slowdive and the all-important My Bloody Valentine. The first CD included in this compilation finds Mum, Isan, Lali Puna, Ulrich Schnauss, B.Fleischmann, Limp, Solvent, Skanfrom, Herrmann and Kleine, Manual, Komeit, MS John Soda and Future 3 breathing life into accoustica with their magic crafting of guitars, glitch and pop covering some of Slowdives most touching and momentous compositions, bewilderingly beautiful vocals emerging from some artists on the label who have not until this date flexed their vocal chords. The second CD is a largely instrumental affair, featuring brand new tracks from many of the aforementioned artists, plus a glimpse into the future of the label with contributions from new signings Guitar, Populous and Icebreaker. With 28 exclusive tracks on board (on both Vinyl and CD formats), this is one of the most ambitious and succesful compilations the scene has enjoyed in years testimony to the importance and excellence of a label that has matured beyond its years and is enjoying a following that now spans 5 continents and beyond, shards of melody and noise drifting off into outer space. Gorgeously Lovely.

Golden - Apollo Stars - National / Thrill Jockey

First release on Trans Am's new imprint funded and pressed by Thrill Jockey. "Golden formed in the dead of winter 1993, in blustery Oberlin Ohio. This perseverance, along with their synthesis of sub-equatorial sublimation and swamp-fried blues, allows Golden to weather the storms of rock-and-roll adversity." A mighty mad rock brew, horns blaring >>> full pronton propulsion drums and hatstand shit kicking lyrics - a real nice surprise. Recommended.

Kim Hiorthoy - Melke - Smalltown Supersound

Long overdue second album from the multi-talented Kim Hiorthoy, a follow-up to the highly acclaimed Hey, a record only just recently given a vinyl release by the Vertical Form label. Finding time away from his dayjob as a highly coveted graphic designer and filmmaker, Hiorthoy manages to arrange another mesmerising assemblage of clinkclank toy instruments and electronic impulses to deliver a beautifully understated and moving piece of work. Melke retains the same sense of wide-eyed bewilderment and naivety that has marked his work out in the past, but a slightly new path is forged on some moments here with a stronger emphasis on beat and percussive arrangement making for a more bone-shaking listen than Hey. Hiorthoys greatest strength rests with the genuine extent of esotericism he manages to display within his art at times capturing the same lo-fi filmic aesthetic characteristic of Vincent Gallo, while at others utilising more precise digital narratives as favoured by the likes of the IDM fraternity. Those of you who enjoyed Hiorthoys contribution to Vertical Forms Pro Bono Publico album (with Hiorthoys tracks making an appearance here) will adore Melke, while those of you new to his sound will have just made a wonderfully inspiring discovery. Lovely.

Minotaur Shock - Rockpoolin EP - Melodic

Fantastic follow-up to the Minotaurs excellent Chiff Chaffs album, Rockpoolin is a wonderfully executed glitch-driven hybrid of accoustic subtleties and electronic reconstruction a distinctly British take on the sound espoused by labels like Morr Music and Plug Research. Lola is a fast-paced cross between Plaid, Tortoise and Four Tet, lovingly merging organic drums with sampled percussive spasms, Marimbas, Organs, Flutes, Mandolins and an array of DSPs. Rockpoolin is more relaxed, a disfunctional essence surrounding beautifully touching melodies and changes, cinematic scoring in the most accomplished and forward-looking sense. 4 tracks in total vinyl limited to 750 copies only for the world!

Signer - Low Light Dreams - Car Park

First forward-thinking musicians began experimenting with electronic instruments, then some abandoned the traditional band setup (and the band) entirely for the computer. It's a trend that has been observed by New Zealand native Bevan Smith (aka Signer) for many years, abandoning his accoustic past and embracing the burgeoning electronic scene of the mid 90s, Bevan has attained considerable accaliam for his work under the Aspen and Signer monikers. Yet after some time working within the electronic domain, Bevan began to feel constrained by the digital music making process. It had become as formulaic as the indie rock he abandoned in the 90s. It was time once again for something new. Low Light Dreams explores a sound that Bevan himself calls 'nu-indie': incorporating elements from first-wave post-rockers like Seefeel, dub-influenced techno, and some of the more blissed-out items from the Kranky catalog. The result sounds like it should be prominantly placed among Chain Reactions best. Recommended

NON - Children Of The Black Sun - Mute

Children of the Black Sun is released on CD and comes packaged with the added extra of a DVD featuring a 5.1 mix of the music. Boyd started his musical creations in the 70's and since then has developed his profoundly uncompromising style by pushing the sonic envelope further and further. With Children of the Black Sun" the man who once called for Total War has done the unexpected and produced a piece of music that is both mysterious and unique.

Radian - Rec.Extern - Thrill Jockey

This amazing electro/acoustic live trio first came to our attention via the Mego/Rhiz labels and now in 2002 find themselves signed to Thrill Jockey with John McEntire on the mixing desk. On 'Rec.Extern' Radians earlier abstract soundpieces find more structure and focus. 'Nahfeld' is a post-jazz improv soundtrack, static, treated drum, vibraphone, industrial percussion, all played with a feeling for wide spaces but a darker soul. At some points a funked-up rhythm is hinted at before the studio lights go out. 'Jet' finds more studio trickery - this time, though, the focus is on a huge dissonant dub bassline wrapped round tempered noise, clattering percussion and tweaked sample sources. As good as the Supersilent '5' CD plus you get the added bonus of John McEntire's studio genius in full effectiveness. A mighty fine release.

More Morr Music !

Coming up on Morr Music: [from a Morr Music e-mail newsletter]

artist: ms. john soda
title: no p. or d.
cat.no.: morr music 031
format: lp/cd

release date: 07.10.2002

tracklisting:

a) technicolor - misco - go check - solid ground
b) by twos - unsleeping - hiding/ fading - elusive

ms. john soda are stefanie bhm and micha acher, both part of the creative
sphere around notable german label and distributor hausmusik. after the
overwhelming media attention bestowed upon the latest albums by lali puna,
the notwist and tied & tickled trio, now a wider audience, too, has realised
that the german region between landsberg and weilheim harbours an
extraordinary density of fascinating music per capita. micha acher is
involved with some of the best known and most significant of these projects
(the notwist, tied & tickled trio, village of savoonga) while stefanie bhm
plays keyboards with munich-based instrumentalists couch. both have been
collaborating on music for nigh on 10 years and have released two hausmusic
albums in the mid-90s as ogonjok.

ms. john soda, on the other hand, started out as stefanie's solo project,
with a first single four years ago already stirring up interest at morr
music. initially, this sparked off a contribution to the first morr
compilation (putting the morr back in morrissey), another project on which
micha acher features prominently. during the last two years (and in-between
numerous tours and recording sessions with their other bands) and without a
concrete publication goal the two kicked off an intense musical exchange.
it soon became clear that ms. john soda would become their "pop project":
the melody, clarity, emotional directness and timelessness of song
structures would supersede the importance of aural experimentation. at the
same time they wanted to use classical instruments such as bass, guitar,
drums and keyboards and they wanted to rock -with a constant glance at the
careful balance between instruments and electronics.

together with producer mario thaler ms. john soda have recorded an album
with its very own voice in the "sound of weilheim" context. if the need
should arise to label ms. john soda "indietronics", then we should also
resurrect the capital i in indie. because it is here that one of the
genre's sound ideals, "to rock without rocking" has been carefully, but
determinedly, unearthed. this undoubtedly makes ms. john soda a morr music
band project that dares to venture further out of the safe harbour of aural
abstraction than any other and fulfils the old claim of creating a truly
touching pop record (and this time and finally without any consideration for
a possible inclusion on trendy dj mix compilations).

live ms. john soda will perform together with thomas geltinger (couch) on
drums and carl oesterhelt (carlo fashion, fsk, merricks) on percussion.

The Devils - Dark Circles

Something that I have overlooked, The Devils - Dark Circles, previewed here by Darla

The Devils are NIK RHODES and STEPHEN DUFFY. In 1979 Duran Duran featured Nick Rhodes (keyboards and tapes), John Taylor (guitar) and vocalist Stephen Duffy who mixed his F. Scoff Fitzgerald obsession into New Wave electronic songs propelled by a very primitive drum machine. The line up changed after only four gigs and Stephen went on to hone his songwriting skills as a solo singer while Duran Duran discovered a new singer, Simon Le Bon, dreaming up pop classics such as Save A Prayer, Rio, Skin Trade and Ordinary World. Rhodes and Duffy met up again a couple of years ago and found themselves discussing the album they would have made as Duran Duran - a New Wave, electronic record that fused all the cutting-edge, pioneering influences from the 7Os (Bowie, Kraftwerk, Iggy Pop and Talking Heads) with their love of great songs. Inspired by a tape of their early gigs, the duo locked themselves away in a studio and wrote a whole new album, Dark Circles. The result is a refreshingly modern sounding record, textured with analogue machines but lifted out of the retro ghetto through some timeless songwriting (the beautiful Barbarellas and instantly catchy Come Alive are amongst the highlights) and a cinematic, 21st Century production. Dark Circles is an album born out of youthful enthusiasm, fantastic chemistry and a romantic fascination with the futuristic possibilities of pop music

This album was released July 15th in the UK, and will have a US release on 26th August.

Those after reference points might try Michael Nyman, Johann Pachelbel and the Durutti Column for the music and The Smiths, Momus and late 60s Sinatra for the lyrics. Hardly an album you'd reach for at a party, more one you'll visit when everyone else has left you alone and gone home.

Schneider TM - Zoomer

City Slang will release an album by Schneider TM called Zoomer on September 2nd in Germany. (September 23rd? in UK) .

[In the US/ Canada, Schneider Tm - Zoomer is released by Mute on August 20th]

Schneider TM "Zoomer", cd/lp
release date: September 2, 2002

It's time to blast preconceptions of electronica as cold, minimal, distant knob twiddling to oblivion once and for all, and Dirk Dresselhaus, aka Schneider TM, is just the man to do it. His second full length album, Zoomer, harnesses a sublimely modern depth of musical vision to the hard won wisdom of life experience. A proper album, developed over the course of three years, Zoomer is the sound of electronica, at last, with something to say.

"You've got to keep your heart open," Dirk says straight up, with his typical bulls-eye brevity. "When you're in a certain heightened state of sensitivity, you feel all the different sounds, melodies, and words. The trick then is to keep your ears open for the right moment when it all just happens to fall together and then get it on the hard drive. That's one of the main points of this record." What about genuinely crafted songwriting? Check. Pop hooks? Check. Catchy vocal melodies? Check. Wry humor? Check. Schneider TM brings a singer-songwriter sensibility for words and music to the ambitions of a sonic explorer. He calls it "chemical listening", being able to hear layers of ear-teasing, soul tickling sounds, threaded personal beliefs and hopes. The more you listen, the more you discover. It's hard to think of another artist in the field of electronica who has yet done come up with the goods as he does with blinding success.

Last year's 'Binokular' split mini album with long time musical foil KPT. Michi.Gan paved the way. Its stellar track was the stunning, and ubiquitous, 'The Light 3000', a breath-catching cover of The Smiths' 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out'. Perfectly pitched, its nave, coolly glistening electronica deftly counterpoints the yearning, emotional recklessness of Morrissey's lyrics. 'The Light 3000' inadvertently gatecrashed the trashy bootleg / bastard-pop scene and offered something beating with sincerity. It spread virus-like to everyone from Desperate Soundsystem DJ Jarvis Cocker (who was quoted as saying he always used to it open his sets) to Rough Trade's genre-defining Electronica 01 compilation, came in at number 8 in John Peel's Festive 50, (that's as voted by listeners), and was embraced by everyone from die-hard indie fans to dance music softies and anyone who ever had a heart.

A veteran drummer, guitarist and singer in successful German bands since his teenage years in the late eighties, Dirk abandoned traditional song forms on his Schneider TM debut, the classically of its time 1998 instrumental album, Moist. Recording 'The Light 3000' gave him back his voice. It proved to be a breakthrough for him as well as a sign of things to come.

An integral point in Dirk's recording process was the age old struggle between the heart and the mind and how to strike a balance between the two with out compromising either one. As a result, Zoomer, for all it's electronic wizardry, is chock full of guitars and vocals, something that Binokular only hinted at. Both of these "organic" elements are then treated and morphed in to something that lies in between the analog & the digital worlds.

Shuggie Otis' heroic album 'Inspiration Information' was a key reference - the idea of the heart directing the mind, using cutting edge technology (Shuggie was famously one of the first practitioners of the drum machine) to express human frailties. Dirk discarded an entire studio set up to the bare essentials of a laptop and a few instruments in his living room, where over time, friends, neighbours and daily life become part of the music. "It's the best situation to record at home," he muses. "I wake up, have a coffee and am really inspired by dreams. I find that the best and most inspiring moments are between being sleep and awake, because it's the time where consciousness and subconsciousness meet. This stage was very important for the recordings." This concept, one of reading between the lines or peering into the cracks where the real and the imagined are blurred, is what shapes the entire album. Where two disparate concepts melt together to form something entirely new.

Hence first single, 'Frogtoise', the freaky dream of splicing a frog onto a tortoise, a bass buzzing but melodically fragile tune layered with kaleidosopic harmonies, that began as a jam session with Kpt. Michi.Gan. Meanwhile, best friend and long time band mate, Christopher Uhe, dropped in to play bass on the swirling ecto-plasmal digitry of '999'.

Dirk's neighbour, Cati Aglibut, adds viola to 'Cuba TM', which also features the glorious sounds of Lambchop's pedal steel player, Paul Niehaus. A brief acquaintance during a special City Slang Radio One session in 2001 (where Niehaus spontaneously collaborated live with Schneider TM) resulted in a cross-Atlantic exchanging of tapes.

In later sessions, legendary Hamburg reggae and hip hop producer Mathias Arfman mixed several tracks. He draws out a pulsing dub current, notably in the sweetly fizzing 'DJ Guy' and in the stutter-bugging 'turn on' which stars maverick poet and musician Max Turner (formerly of the notorious Berlin hip hop outfit, Puppetmastaz).

"He's such a great rapper, or whatever he is!" Dirk laughs. "He doesn't want to be known as a rapper, because actually he's a great poet. He's half-Scottish, but he grew up in Hamburg. He hacks around with words so great, it's like Lego, but it makes meaning."

Let's not overlook Dirk's own lyrics. Deceptively simple, he cuts straight to the core of relationship struggles (check the insight of 'Abyss') and battles to remain true to your own soul (see the protest song hidden in 'Reality Check'), with just a few direct words. Ideas that leave you with a lingering sense of life affirming joy. As he sings on 'Cuba TM', "...to let the bowels spin, to Let love come in..."

"Two of my biggest influences are Lou Reed and Daniel Johnston," Dirk admits. "I was always influenced by English lyricists who used really simple words because I understood them best. Put simple words together and make the meaning clear. I tried to make Zoomer as positive as possible, but not blindly. You know, it seems easy when you're alone, but you totally get stuck, because you don't have any reflection. 'I'll Be Your Mirror'!" he quips. "That's the point. And it's really exhausting! But that's the only way."

Over the past three years, Schneider TM has remixed in inimitable style the likes of Lambchop, Labradford, High Llamas, Quarks and Ruby among others. A noise-record with Pansonic's Ilpo Vaisanen is in the can and Norwegian folkster Erlend Oye (Kings of Convenience) has asked him to collaborate on his forthcoming solo project. Dirk is also a member of the outfit Paincake with girlfriend Hanayo (a former J-Pop star, now visual artist, who also records for Digital Hardcore), and plans to turn their wild live show into an album.

But that's all in the tantalising future. With Zoomer, Schneider TM defies expectations of aural wallpaper electronica with a grace, passion, & wit that are the mark of a songwriter whose talents are in full bloom. Right now, Schneider TM has just detonated an electronic pop bomb. Watch it explode.

Tarwater - Dwellers on the Threshold

Kitty Yo will release an album by Tarwater this Autumn:

... on the threshold and this is how they called their new album. it will be released in the end of august on KITTY-YO and MUTE (for northamerica). DWELLERS ON THE THRESHOLD provides a beautiful warm and deep sound with the so typically narrative dark vocal style of ROBERT LIPPOK (also to rococo rot). for all new and old fans ! the tarwater is back in our living rooms, car stereos and headphones all over the planet !

In the US/Canada this album is released on Mute on September 3rd, 2002.

Tarwaters fourth album begins with these words of the Norwegian performance artist Tone Avenstroup. Apparently, in a disco in no mans land between two continents, these words are spoken.

Tarwater can hardly be classified. Strangely graceful, their sound patterns change between traditional instruments and modern electronica, between songs and tracks. Ronald Lippok (to rococo rot) and Bernd Jestram use their material unpretentiously and with economy. Dwellers on the Threshold refers to the demarcation line between songwriting and track modelling which is a characteristic for Tarwater. A demarcation line that many popular culture critics argue about. The medium is the message; and with Tarwater, the medium is quite often atmospheric tracks for films.

In the past year, during the recordings in their own studio in Berlin/Mitte, a slowly growing archive of songs was being created. Dwellers on the Threshold is the result. During this time, Tarwater worked together with other artists such as the above mentioned Tone Avenstroup, Nicholas Addo-Nettey (member of the legendary Fela Kuti band) and Stefan Schneider (Mapstation and to rococo rot). While working on their new tracks, Tarwater wrote music for films, theatre and auditions as well.

In contrast to their former releases that made them popular in North America, the UK, and especially France, Tarwater prefer the short form on Dwellers on the Threshold. Literally spoken, the album could be compared to a collection of short stories. It is a non-linear story about in-betweens where the trivial and the mysterious co-exist.

Non - Children of the Black Sun

Another Mute release, Non - Children of the Black Sun

Non, aka Boyd Rice releases a new album "Children Of The Black Sun" on Mute on 26th August (20th August in North America).

Try to imagine a soundworld of limpid, undulating noise where the orchestral textures of Holst's The Planets and the distortions of the Velvet Underground can coexist. Something like Wagner remixed by David Lynch perhaps, and you may be getting close to this CD, an unusual and eerily beautiful new album from Boyd Rice: one of the most controversial and uncompromising pioneers of the US Industrial Noise scene.

Komputer - Market Led

Mute will release a new album by Komputer on September 16th, see Komputer - Market Led

Komputer's "Market Led" may just be the coolest edge of dance record of the year. It has house music as sparse as an underground car park at midnight, acid robo disco like it's coming from your subconscious, freaky percussive journeys, Zen loops and beautifully displaced piano mantras. The sound of a kick drum banging on the door of post-structuralist philosophy, it's a full on celebration of the hyper-plasticity of sound and the joy of rhythm.

Cabaret Voltaire: Nag Nag Nag and Best of

Mute report that Cabaret Voltaire are to re-release Nag Nag Nag as a single with additional remixes from Tiga and Zyntherius and Akufen

novamute is set to rerelease one of the greatest and truly innovative records of all time, Cabaret Voltaire's electro punk classic 'Nag Nag Nag', on September 30th.

The single is a pre-cursor to a Cabaret Voltaire retrospective 'Best of' 'The Original Sound of Sheffield', released on The Grey Area of Mute Records in October 2002.

Tiga and Zyntheriushave contributed to the package with a re-vocalled rework which bears all the hall-marks of an intense 'labour of love' approach to the project. Tiga's vocal punks-up the original whilst Zyntherius's (Jori Hulkonnen) backing track propels the track firmly into the 21st Century. Techno whizz, man of the moment, Montreal's Akufen pushes the track into the stratosphere combining 2-step, techno, house, electro and bossa-nova. Even by Akufen current high standards this remix is, as they say, 'next level' shit.
