What are your memories of DJ Alan “Fluff” Freeman who has died aged 79?
Born in Australia in 1927, Alan Freeman came to Britain in 1957 after working as an announcer on a Melbourne radio station.
He became one of the UK's top DJs presenting his Pick of the Pops programme with its distinctive theme tune and his "greetings, pop pickers" introduction.
In the space of 3 calendar years, 3 DJs well known for their proactive music research have passed away: 2004 [John Peel], 2005 [Tommy Vance] and now in 2006 [Alan Freeman]
It's a shame that there are not more current DJs that follow a similar dedicated approach to music research.

Superpumas ( which loosely translated means hottie, babe, chick etc in Swedish ) are long time Swedish friends Carl Henrik Hallen and Daniel Nordh. Originally recording as Kompis, they have already released tracks on Tele, produced and recorded ‘Sudden Rush’ for Elrend Oye’s solo album, followed by further releases on Zero 7’s and Freeform Five’s label, Ultimate Dilemma. Most recently, they also released a mini album on Rob Da Bank’s much respected Sunday Best imprint.
Tilting their hats slightly more in the direction of the dance floor, Superpumas present their debut album under their new identity. It’s a stunning collection of funky electronic dance floor instrumental work outs, coupled with a dazzling selection of hook laden vocal tracks.

In the past year, few other bands have been heavily recommended to me as Houston trio Indian Jewelry - and with good reason. Combining just about every sort of music with just about every sort of instrumentation, it's no wonder that the aforementioned recommendations were as vague as they were. Their debut album, Invasive Exotics, was just reissued by the generally dependable Monitor Records, and the band is currently touring North America. Library Tapes
Swedish duo Library Tapes fall somewhere between the modern compositions of The Books and (to stead directly from the list itself), Max Richter, and the ominous instrumental rock of the the Godspeed camp (also taken from their list!). Combining minimally thunked piano and found sounds, they are, if nothing else, a far cry from most of the Swedes making today's e-rounds. Their debut, Alone in the Bright Lights of a Shattered Life came out last year on the Resonant label
