The latest update: THE LIST [10.15.07] - Rate Your Music

A list organized by mulletguy16

this edition of THE LIST contains the top 400 albums, as rated by those on my favorite users list. updated bi-monthly (or so) to reflect evolving tastes as we journey together. the point of the list is to grasp the intangible - that is, the best musical releases, including LPs, EPs and live albums, according to those whose opinions i respect, and to thereby provide a serious reference for those who are fortunate enough to have a similar musical worldview. the point of THE LIST is not to state what is and what is not a great album. THE LIST is for reference and comparison and discussion.

Food

New album: Rune Grammofon RCD 2069 - Food: Molecular Gastronomy

Now down to the duo of Iain Ballamy and Thomas Strønen, Food looks to be more active than ever. This, their fifth album, was recorded by Jeremy Cox over a period of two years and mixed by Ashley Slater, who also contributes on three tracks. Maria Kannegaard plays Fender Rhodes on five tracks. Strønen, considered to be one of Norway´s most inventive drummers, was always an important writer in Food and it´s fair to say that a good amount of their earlier output was written as opposed to improvised. “Molecular Gastronomy”, however, is mostly improvised, much in the same way as the music of Strønen´s other duo Humcrush. Given the new set-up and a fresh approach, it´s also natural that Ballamy, without doubt one of the great British sax players of his generation, gets more room for his excellent playing. Finally, this is also a great sounding album!

  Paul Raven - 1961 - 2007

I am still in shock at this unexpected news of the passing of Paul Raven at the weekend.

[I had found out in the early hours of Sunday morning via The Gathering, a Killing Joke fans email system.]

My first exposure to Killing Joke was in early 1985 as a then 14 year old, and over the following two decades + Killing Joke became one one of my favourite bands.

Blabbermouth were one of the first high profile websites to report the sad news on Sunday morning: BLABBERMOUTH.NET - MINISTRY/KILLING JOKE Bassist PAUL RAVEN Dead At 46

13th Planet record label have a Paul Raven - Tribute Page

Saturday, October 20, 2007 - The 13th Planet family is saddened to confirm the devastating news of the sudden and unexpected death of Ministry's bassist, Paul Raven. Raven was working with French recording artists Treponem Pal on their new collaboration with Ted Parsons (ex-Prong/ex-Killing Joke/Jesu) and members of The Young Gods in a small village on the French/Swiss border. Initial reports indicate Raven's passing was the result of a heart attack.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Raven's family and friends around the world. His love of life, artistic creations and joyful laughter touched and moved all of us deeply. The loss of this extraordinary artist, unique individual and loyal friend will be felt by many. The impact of his talents will be remembered forever but his contribution to the lives of everyone who knew him is his greatest legacy.

13th Planet dedicates this page to the life and art of Paul Vincent Raven.

R.I.P Paul Raven - 1961 - 2007

Our beloved Paul Raven died unexpectedly of a heart attack in Geneva in the early hours of Saturday October 20th 2007. Paul went to bed and did not wake up.

All of Paul’s family and extended family are in a state of deep sadness and shock at Paul’s unexpected passing. Paul has been sadly taken from us early in his life and his passing will leave behind a void that only Paul’s amazing and unique character could fill. Paul was full of life and anyone that knew him well enough loved him deeply and admired him greatly.

Paul brought something special with him wherever he went and we will all miss him greatly. Rest in peace.

Jaz Coleman - Geordie Walker, front man and Guitarist of Killing Joke :

''We are all deeply stricken with grief at the unannounced departure of possibly the funniest man on planet Earth and a brother to us all. Paul Vincent Raven unimaginable sadness is felt by all''

2008 Bloc Weekend announced:

RA: Event. Bloc Weekend at Pontin's Holiday Park, South East

BLOC is a two and a half thousand capacity underground electronic dance festival held in an off season holiday park over three nights of a long weekend.

BLOC is a powerhouse of dynamic, forward-thinking underground music. Featuring rare appearances from Dave Clarke, Amon Tobin, Kode 9, Joey Beltram, Red Snapper and many more, BLOC is set to demolish a generation one more time.

BLOC is designed to be an internationally visible showcase for the underground scene in the UK, focusing on a dual ethos of fanatical and utter dedication to music on the one hand, and an almighty headbanging rave on the other.

BLOC evolved from a Brighton club night into the biggest and best UK festival of its kind for its Year Zero event – BLOC 07. This sold out six weeks in advance, raising the bar for music programming in the UK and proving that rumours of the death of the underground have been greatly exaggerated.

Professor Johnny Marr ! Professor Johnny Marr heads to University of Salford | News | Guardian Unlimited Music

Today the University of Salford may have hit upon an effective solution: get Johnny Marr to give the lectures. The legendary guitarist - whose career has taken him from the Smiths, through Electronic to, most recently, Modest Mouse - has been announced as Salford's new professor of music. Not just an honorary title, Marr's responsibilities will include hosting workshops on the composition and performance of popular music.

John Luther Adams

CB0026: John Luther Adams - Red Arc / Blue Veil

The music The four pieces that make up this CD— Dark Waves, Among Red Mountains, Qilyuan, and Red Arc/Blue Veil —are for various combinations of one or two pianos, percussion, and electronics. Each piece is built from a complex, polyrhythmic layering of voices that combine to form large, multi-arch musical shapes that explore a rich palette of harmonic and timbral colors, lush textures, and clear, simple compositional forms. This is music of broad strokes and ever-changing ebb and flow.

new release: Smallfish Records - YAIR ETZIONY - "FLAWED" - CD

Mike's joint album of the week* Yair Etziony's previous work as one half of Faction was really rather highly regarded and the lovely organic nature of the sounds was a real pleasure to listen to. This solo album for that most excellent of labels, Spekk, is a real tour de force in my opinion and forms the most rhythmically orientated release thus far on the label. Taking a minimalist approach with the music, he manages to combine a lush, delicately melodic sound and a click / glitch based flavour which moves me on so many levels. Deep, dub-laced reverbs and echoes, superbly chilled out beats and a definite nod towards the likes of Raster Noton and the classic clicks & cuts style of Mille Plateaux all join together to make a listening experience that's sublime. There are moments of soudscape driven drone, field recordings and a sculptural depth here that adds a huge amount of variety to the album. If you liked the Scape label in their heyday or have a penchant for electronic music that's intricate, yet completely soulful, this is an album you *must* check out. Recommended without hesitation... pure class.

Ulver

MIC Norway profile Ulver's new album: MIC Norway: Ulver: Shadows of the Sun

New full length album out from the most austere and nonplussing animals in the ark of rock related musical expression. Ulver (wolves) issue their “Shadows of the Sun” on a note of sombre for-the-sake-of-survival determination.

  Radiohead - In Rainbows

Radiohead - In Rainbows - the reactions

my very quick first thoughts, on only one listen:

some tracks:

Bodysnatchers = The Notwist + Smashing Pumpkins. The most rock track on the album?

Weird Fishes/Arpeggi = Brian Eno produced U2 Unforgettable Fire

All I Need = Talk Talk + Manual + Ulrich Schnauss + Kraftwerk + The Blue Nile + The Broadway Project

Faust ARP = Beatles influenced melodies

House Of Cards - more Talk Talk and a.r.kane influences

Jigsaw Falling Into Place - more The Notwist + The Woodentops circa 1986 + even James - the way the acoustic guitars have an uptempo jangle style

Videotape - more Talk Talk / Mark Holis slow paced arty-rock piano minimalism, this even sounds like Ulver on their new album !

The astounding trio Ungdomskulen (which is Norwegian for middle school) have left their rehearsal space in the musical city of Bergen and emerged with an album that will not go unnoticed. Cry Baby is out on October 8th. It introduces a band so good, playing songs so unorthodox and multifaceted, that one gets the feeling of a delicious encounter with music as it would voice itself had it no need for people.
