Venn 07 - Venn Festival, Bristol

Website just launched for: Venn 07 - ... 31st May - 3rd June ... Bristol

About Venn:

The Venn Festival was born in 2003, out of a dual impetus: an overbearing urge to enliven the straightjacket music presentation format, and a desire to give Bristol, UK a landmark music festival that was one of the most exciting of its kind in the world.

Venn imagines a festival of music, sound and art that, by resisting obvious programming and modes of production wherever possible, triggers a wide set of emotions and thoughts. An inexpensive festival of musical overlap for as many fellow explorers that can be persuaded to come.

Occupying a collection of venues, buildings and outposts scattered around Bristol, UK, Venn is operated by a collection of disparate music obsessives who bring to Venn their own entertaining sensibilities and probing spirit.

For 2007 Venn goes astral. Pulling in acts of the very highest calibre from divergent musical constellations, this year's line-up is Venn's broadest yet.

Maverick originators like Faust, J Spaceman and Einar Orn mix it with young firestarters like Cooper Jones, Helena Gough and Beardyman; there's rare performances from key sonic protagonists like Vladislav Delay, Voe and Stephen O’Malley, plus sound sorcerers shrouded in reclusive mystique like Aufgehoben and Paavoharju (both playing on Saturday). Plus, there's a range of carefully chosen artists perform two-set specials.

Venn 07's many musical colours include nervous pop, bicycle noise, industrial jungle, world-wise folk and neon-lit house - yet through the Venn kaleidoscope no sound stays still: everything can be something else.

Acts so far confirmed include:

A very rare performance from this stunning psych/Bollywood-tinged folk collective from Finland.

The incendiary, the legendary, the originals get a live sonic reshaping from Nurse With Wound's key collaborator, plus Geoff Leigh from UK avant-rock pioneers Henry Cow.

KTL (Stephen O’ Malley from Sunn O))) (Southern Lord) & Pita (Mego)
The ultimate doom and electronics face-off.

UK dance music’s premier chameleon, freerange multidimensional f***ed up groove.

Heavy electro-acoustic juxtapositions with the Spiritualized main man and some big jazz/electronic/avant players.

VLADISLAV DELAY (Huume, Chain Reaction, Mille Plateaux) 2 SETS
Finland’s don of the deep abstracted dub electronix - also performing a microhouse playboy set as LUOMO.

Eastern European folk, gypsy song, Mexican fanfare and cinematic flourishes.

Irresistable invective and explosive cut-up beats from the country's hottest leftfield properties. Thou shalt steal a subversive march on the mainstream.

Dadaist electronic punk with Einar Orn of The Sugarcubes. ‘In Cod We Trust’.

Folk textures, cinematic gestures and wild card moves from this amazing avant-chamber group performing a specially commissioned piece called ‘Other Thunders’.

Revolutionary and humble pop from Japan. Kings and Queens of the skewed melancholic song.

LAWRENCE (Novamute/Ghostly International/Kompakt)
Sparkling 4/4 narratives from a German house/techno prodigy, also known to play with abstract hip hop and ambient guitar.

12 string and slide guitar raga-time from one of the most revered modern folk-blues players.

Organic noise immersions from Portland, Oregon. Play a full-on electric set and a withering acoustic set. Be warned.

The incredible beatboxing lone ranger of UK hip hop plays it both party and cerebral.

Experimental Goldfrapp/Portishead side project. Analogue heaven.

plus ...
and many more acts, DJs, workshops, & art interventions.

Goldie is back as Rufige Kru

Alerted initially via Simon Reynolds & K-punk - Shopping - Freshcuts - Rufige Kru - Malice In Wonderland (Album) - METH 008CD - Drum'N'Bass - Vinyl & CD

Goldie (born Clifford Price) is going back to his roots using his Rufige Kru moniker.

Goldie's first ever recording alias Rufige Kru was used on a series of seminal jungle/drum'n'bass releases on Reinforced Records in 1992 and pitched him to the top of the growing scene to the point of singing his Metalheadz project to London Records and the release of the classic ‘Timeless’ project.

Rufige Kru’s hitlist consists of such memorable moments as ‘Darkrider’, ‘Terminator’ (in itself a defining and scene changing moment) and ‘Kemistry’, and for Metalheadz ‘Dark Metal’ and ‘Beachdrifta’.

So to ‘Malice in Wonderland’, the debut Rufige Kru album and the Metalheadz labels' debut artist album, and it's all about recapturing the essence of the early scene but with the modern technology – a deep, dark, uncompromising ride across the memory traces. Coming Soon April 2007

A Book about ECM

"Horizons Touched: The Music of ECM" is now available. Published by Granta Books of London, and edited by Steve Lake and Paul Griffiths, this book presents a multiple-perspective survey of the label’s work.

The first volume to address the full range of music on ECM, “Horizons Touched” contains extensive interviews with producer Manfred Eicher and over 20 specially commissioned essays on all aspects of the label’s work by an international line-up of leading music journalists and writers. Interspersed between the essays are more than 100 statements from ECM’s composers, musicians and engineers as well as film makers, photographers and designers associated with the company. The book also includes a complete ECM discography, with all releases from 1969 to the present.

Incorporating more than 400 colour and black & white illustrations – album covers, concert photos, session photos and more – this is a book every ECM collector will want to own. This large-format 448-page hardcover book measures 22 x 30 cm, weighs more than two kilos, and is issued in a slipcase.

David Torn - Prezens - ECM - Has a creative modern masterpiece arrived?

Listen to 2 tracks from the forthcoming David Torn album : Prezens that will be released by ECM next month:

Press Release

David Torn

David Torn: guitars, live sampling & manipulation, microprocessors
Tim Berne: alto saxophone
Craig Taborn: Fender Rhodes piano, Hammond B3 organ, Mellotron, bent circuits
Tom Rainey: drums

ECM CD: B0008650-02

1) ak (9:19)
2) rest & unrest (3:44)
3) structural functions of prezens (10:56)
4) bulbs (6:18)
5) them buried standing (2:43)
6) sink (7:14)
7) neck-deep in the harrow. . . (12:32)
8) ever more other (4:12)
9) ring for endless travel (2:23)
10) miss place, the mist. . . (5:45)
11) transmit regardless (7:20)

Could this be one of the defining artistic albums of 2007?

A combination of sound styles are utilized, jazztronica, improv, experimental electronics, art-rock, jazz-fusion, rock in opposition and ambient.

The tracks have space, texture, improvisation, experimentation, creativity, attention to detail. David Torn's guitar bleeds with similar intensity [on the bulbs track] to that of O'rang on the 1994 album Herd Of Instinct.

Listening to the 2 tracks references to the following artists can be made:

Supersilent, E.S.T, Triosk, Eno and Byrne - My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, Techno Animal, Chris Bowden, Talk Talk, Miles Davis, King Crimson, Skerik, Ulver [Circa: Perdition City], Bark Psychosis, O'rang, The Science Group, Miriodor, Brian Eno, Radiohead, Terje Rypdal, Eivind Aarset.

Rumskib - New Shoegazer Band from Denmark

Another fine discovery via avi @ ..: it's a trap! | 03.14.2007 - Rumskib are a new shoegazer band from Odense in Denmark.

Listen on myspace:

Listening, obvious references to The Cocteau Twins circa Heaven and Las Vegas, and early Lush the same sublime tumbling Kaleidoscope sound textures.

Rumskib are

Keith Canisius - Guitars, composer, singer, producer ect.
Tine Louise Kortermand - Singer
Live members Martin Skovshoved - Drums, Boe - Bass, Peter guitar

also Jonas Munk [From Manual] programing drums and synth

Darla will the self titled album from Rumskib on May 8th

Info via Darla

EXCLUSIVE. Darla is proud to release the debut record by Danish uber nu-gaze group Rumskib. Rumskib is the Odense, Denmark duo of Keith Canisius (Guitarist, Vocalist, Composer, Producer) and Tine Louise Kortermand (Singer). Keith produced the debut record with Jonas Munk (Manual), who programmed the beats, made the electronic sounds, and played synthesizer. Rumskib's debut record begins with a Simple Minds New Gold Dream style intro. A rough & repetitive MBV Loveless style guitar line kicks in. Next an aggressive baggy beat begins to pump making Rumskib sound nearly like Curve. Then a very lovely surprise: A very pretty, Lush style guitar change comes and simultaneously the wall of sound vocal harmonies begin -- like Emma, Miki... and Bjork! There's no denying Rumskib are derivative, however, Rumskib has such command of all the genre's key sound elements and their own pop songs are so damn good the band gloriously claim the new shoegaze sound as their own. Rumskib's sound is at once modern and classic, blending a strong love for early 90s shoegazer bands such as Chapterhouse and Lush with the sensibilities of grand Scandinavian 80s pop such as A-Ha and Roxette, all flavored with harsh noise-rock guitars and crunchy micro-programmed beats. Sometimes their sound is up-tempo, almost danceable like The Cardigans meet St. Etienne. At other times their sound is thick, heavy, and romantic recalling The Cocteau Twins or Simple Minds. Rumskib manage to be both surrealist and accessible; complex but straight forward. Vocalist Tine Louise creates harmonies so beautiful one would think they came from some mysterious wonderland (or Victorialand?) and Keith Canisius' lyrical call & response guitar playing is intelligent and evocative. Combine all this with well crafted compositions and Jonas Munk's trademark head-spinning, multi-layered sound sculptures, and you've got a work of undeniable beauty.

DEADLOCK - Code Of Honor Video

New Deadlock video for the track: Code of Honour

Deadlock are a German band with a hybrid style that combines numerous metal sub-genres progressive-goth-symphonic-melodic-death metal. The female ethereal vocals [Similar to The Gathering] contrast with the male death metal growling vocals.

The music has a full on rich epic production, the attention to sound detail is immaculate. Deadlock's versatility and virtuosity are displayed on this track to the max. Dynamics, atmospherics, moments of euphoria, rhythmic intensity and emotional power.

The female vocalist, Sabine has a powerful ethereal clear vocal style that is a pleasure to listen to.
