Unique 3

A new album, retrospective and remix competition for Unique 3 - the legendary British bleep/ techno band.

via email from furthur.news

REMIX UNIQUE 3'S 'THE THEME'

Fancy being a part of techno history? Poke Records, Furthur and Bleep are offering you the chance to remix Unique 3's seminal 'The Theme'. One of the earliest British techno/house records, 'The Theme' burst out of
the north-east in the late eighties a collision of bleeps, bass and attitude and was the catalyst for half the music we know and love today.

An inspiration to the founders of Warp Records, the track was an influence on everyone from LFO to The Chemical Brothers to Goldie and was voted no.1 record of all time by the DJ team at the legendary Hacienda.

With the launch of Poke Records, work on the long awaited new Unique 3 album underway and a retrospective album due later this year, it seems fitting to finally close this chapter by offering you the chance to re-interpret this bleep classic.

All the parts you need to remix 'The Theme' can be downloaded from Bleep, the winning entries will be pressed up and released as on two twelve inches this Summer and be available for high quality download from Bleep.

darla will release Mahogany - Connectivity on June 12th [alerted via Angry Robot]

Connectivity! is music that dovetails thoughts and ideas on architecture, city planning, travel, space, appropriate technology, sustainable energy, transportation, the rural landscape, sex and eroticism, clothing, pattern, color and light. It is an album about every emotion one can hold. Connectivity! is the group's most fecund, evocative and delicately complex work yet, employing every instrument, voice and magic black box within Mahogany's own New York studio, the Simultaneous Workshop. It is a densely arranged, dynamic record made unique by Mahogany's massively celestial, guitar-driven sound. Connectivity! is also, quite possibly, the loudest record ever made.

Chad Hoefler - American Ambient Music Artist

lotuspike have just released a new album by CHAD HOEFLER titled: Quiet Glow

This is Chad's second album that was mixed and mastered by ambient music legend Robert Rich.

[CHAD HOEFLER's first album Twilight in the Offing was highly praised in the ambient music community.]

Official website: Chad Hoefler

Chad Hoefler sprung upon the ambient music scene last year with his surprising and acclaimed debut, "Twilight in the Offing", on Hypnos records. This Year, Chad has released his sophomore effort,Quiet Glow, with Lotuspike. Quiet Glow is baroque sonic alchemy with icy overtones. Refined and robust, the music on Quiet Glow challenges and engages the listener. This sophisticated body of work is definitely not to be missed by fans of exploratory electronic music.

Quiet Glow was mixed and mastered by electronic music veteran, Robert Rich. Robert, who also mastered Chad's debut title, had this to say. "Chad's music is always intelligent. I really enjoy his music and working on this project."

CoC review Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance (9.5 out of 10)

Their sound can be as hard-hitting as it can be fragile, without any of the fake honesty and hollow lamentations so prevalent in mainstream music. With a shining production job to boot, Katatonia may well have created the best album of 2006 before the year had even started.

The Month in Techno: Pitchfork Column - Philip Sherburne goes to Berlin to soak up techno and experience the Club Transmediale festival.

In 10 days and nights, I managed to catch gigs, or at least parts of them, featuring Troy Pierce, Richie Hawtin, Magda, Matias Kaden, Oner Ozür, Butane, Alex Smoke, the Wighnomy Brothers, Thomas Melchior, Zip, Pier Bucci, Luci, Zip and Ricardo Villalobos, Phon.o, Modeselektor, Ellen Allien, Daniel Meteo, and Trentemøller-- and those are just the techno-related billings. At the same time, I had to take rain checks on Eats Tapes, Ilsa Gold, Like a Tim, Christopher Just, Phako, Jimmy Edgar, Jackson, Frivolous, Henrik Schwarz, Dandy Jack, Baby Ford, Andreas from Freundinnen, folks from Phonica London, Hawtin and Magda at a semi-private Sunday afterparty-- and those are just the techno-related misses I can remember, to say nothing of the bulk of the Club Transmediale festival, which as an invited panelist and DJ, was the ostensible purpose of my trip.

Syntaks Album: Awakes

Syntaks "Awakes" - forthcoming on Benbecula

Syntaks
"Awakes"
Benbecula Records, 2006
(BEN032) CD Album
5060110360697

Release date: 15 May 2006

Jakob Skøtt has been a life-long collaborator with friend Jonas Munk aka Manual. Their first release together was in 2002 as "Limp" releasing the highly acclaimed album on Morr Music entitled "Orion". A couple of years later the duo released under the own names for the album “Golden Sun” on Darla. Jakob is also part of the 4 piece Causa Sui with a release on Germany's Nasoni.

Where the previous collaborations with Manual has been soporific hip hop beats and melting soundscapes, “Awakes” sees Syntaks explore more varied territories. The ten track album clocks in just under 50 minutes and journeys into an expertly crafted concoction of dub, guitar pop, leftfield beats and Slowdive-esque washes of guitar with the slightest hint of Cocteau Twins at their best.

New Artist alert: Cortney Tidwell from [Dog Day Press]

Just heard a new American female artist, Cortney Tidwell on Xfm flo-motion show who has remarkable esoteric voice.

Artist: Cortney Tidwell
Title: S/T
Label: Ever Records
Cat Number: EVER02CD
Release Date: March 2006
Distributor: Vital
Website: http://www.everrecords.com

new six track self titled ep is released on March 13th in the UK.

Tracklisting:

Tracklisting:
1. Mama From the Mountain
2. Drink Up
3. Hard 2 Tell
4. The Light
5. So I’ll Go Out And Meet My Love
6. Fever Queen

"Cortney’s unusual and uncompromising approach to her work has resulted in a sound that is quite unlike any other. This is music of fascinating beauty: desolate, country-infused laments sprinkled with subtle flourishes; skeletal, eerie, haunting structures that reach out far beyond their geographic roots. And the voice is even more remarkable, an arresting and vulnerable instrument that recalls the likes of Liz Fraser, Hope Sandoval and Leslie Feist whilst maintaining a character all its own."

Opus review Lanterna - Desert Ocean

The disc's opener, "Luminous", is a very strong track that immediately sets the album's travelling tone. Frayne's playing is reminiscent of the textures and shimmering notes that The Edge recorded on The Joshua Tree (and one could be forgiven for half-expecting to hear Bono's soaring voice during the song's later moments).

New Dictaphone Album: Vertigo II

Details of the forthcoming Dictaphone album to be released on March 20th on City Centre Offices

DICTAPHONE - Vertigo II
CD/LP City Centre Offices Towerblock 032
http://www.city-centre-offices.de

"Vertigo II" is the second album from OLIVER DOERELL and ROGER DORING under the Dictaphone tag, further honing their delicately homespun tape loops and jazz emissions into a new kind of midnight effervescence that has won them a sizeable following and a dedicated audience for their hugely acclaimed live shows.

As anyone who has had the indignity of using one will know, Dictaphone's tend to be awkward little buggers that happily tape the conversation across the room whilst rendering the intended subject incomprehensible. Thankfully Dictaphone have taken this appellation as a starting point only and whilst there is undoubtedly something of the 'overheard' about 'Vertigo II', at no point are you compelled to readjust the contrast and bring the foreground into focus.

The serendipitous coming together of Oliver Doerell and Roger Doering, "Vertigo II" marks a clear evolution from the sound on 'M.=Addiction' (towerblock010); whilst diluting none of the spirit which made it so irresistible to begin with. Laying down a membrane of mealy clicks, glitches and sliced digitalis, 'Vertigo II' at times resembles the intricate bedrock of artists such as Jen Jelinek or Angelo Badelamanti. Yet whereas many would be happy to leave it at that, Dictaphone then go about building layers of aural sediment atop this foundation; producing a sound which is always ambitious, perfectly judged and downright addictive. Very much enraptured by sonorous bass, "Vertigo II" happily indulges this predilection and in doing so allows the loose-limbed horns and digital detritus to roam the spectrum without becoming detached from the guiding core.

Peppering the LP with snatches of shortwave-interference (most memorably a snooker match), found-sound snapshots and soundtrack conventions (including a haunting nod to Ed Wood), Dictaphone manage to massage an astonishing amount of material into an end result that feels as light as a feather and refreshingly clean, whilst avoiding the inherent sterility this can often imply. Littered with a vault full of lost memories and escaped snatches of conversation, “vertigo II” reads like a montage of recollections torn and cellotaped by david lynch in a smokey room in an unmarked hotel room..someplace in the middle of nowhere.

Boxcutter

Last week the Breezeblock show played a session by Boxcutter, I was mightly impressed - some of the freshest sounding electronic music I have heard this decade.

[mp3 should still be available via this thread CO-µ-NICATE - breezeblock set]

Boxcutter will release his debut album Oneiric on Planet Mu in April. [Probably, April 24th]

superb electronic music: spacey, dubby, electro, techy liquid dubstep grooves. Deep bass tones, with spangly shards of textures.

Probably the closest starting reference point for me going on the 20 minutes sesion is Omni Trio

Other reference pionts: Massive Attack, Two Lone Swordsmen, Johnny L, Smith & Mighty, Photek, Radioactive Man, This Heat, 23 Skidoo, Depth Charge, Squarepusher, 808 State, David Holmes in a Sonic Blender of Aural Soundscapes

Blogger, Gutterbreakz was on the case last Autumn with a fascinating interview with Boxcutter.

GUTTERBREAKZ: AN INTERVIEW WITH BOXCUTTER an interview from last year.

All credit to Gutterbreakz for setting the agenda and delivering a first rate interview ! respect

Boxcutter sounds a fascinating character with diverse music interests that stretch from Jimi Hendrix to Robert Fripp to Electro to IDM to Fout Tet to dubstep

Gutterbreakz describes Boxcutter's music:

A metallic drone rises as shards of echo-smeared sound matter flicker pensively...a sense of mounting tension...before a wave of shimmering, sustained bell-like tones radiate from the guitar amplifier, bathing the room in a radiant glow that seems to penetrate into every corner. Almost simultaneuosly the laptop starts spitting out a blurry half-step rhythm and resonant, writhing bassline. A haunting synth-pad rises from the mix, mournful yet life-affirming as further note-clusters trickle from the fretboard, spiralling through the air, reflecting back from every surface. Then the music seems to momentarily evaporate in a cloud of penetrating ring-sounds before a sudden adrenelin shot of DSP-soaked breakbeat abstraction bursts through the speakers in a flurry of ride cymbals and time-stretched snares, whilst all the while the morphed guitar textures soar majestically above, undulating towards ever-increasing levels of ecstatic intensity. Then, just as quickly as they appeared, the beats implode in a puff of reverbated delay, leaving only the chiming feedback-loop of guitar amplification.

themilkfactory.co.uk deliver another fine selection of reviews. [The summaries below are from themilkfactory.co.uk e-mail/website, to see the full reviews go to the link above]

ALBUM OF THE MONTH

PREFUSE 73 - Security Screenings
Guillermo Scott Herren continues to alternate full releases and mini-albums with this companion to last year’s Surrounded By Silence.

REVIEWS

MARVIN AYRES - Scape / Cycle - 12 Sketches For Recycling Piano Harmonics
With these two very different projects released simultaneously, British musician Marvin Ayres explores a variety of ambient structure.

PIERRE BASTIEN - Pop
With his second album for Rephlex, French sound artist Pierre Bastien continues to develop his weird and wonderful music-making machines.

BATTLES EP - C / B EP
Prefuse 73’s favourite band, Battles, join Warp, collect their three previous EPs and kick post rock into next week!

BOVAFLUX - Where There Was Nothing
Debut album for Bovaflux’s Eddie Symons, Where There Was Nothing collect a series of minimal electronic compositions.

COLDCUT - Sound Mirrors
Coldcut returns nines years after Let Us Play with another vibrant collection of sounds, ambiences, genres and collaborators. Sound Mirrors is the band’s most complex and varied record to date.

ANDREW COLEMAN - Tony Alva's Hair
Best known as drill act Animals On Wheels, Andrew Coleman has been focussing on more subtle and gentle soundscapes in recent years. For this third album released under his name showcases, Coleman takes his audience in yet another direction.

COPPÉ 9+10=10th - Anniversary
Released to coincide with her label’s tenth anniversary, this bumper double album from Japanese future pop songstress Coppé collects previously unreleased material, remixes and brand new compositions.

TOD DOCKSTADER - Aerial #2
For this second instalment in his series of odes to the short-wave radio, Tod Dockstader makes his presence noticeable as he articulates his collection of tracks into one long piece.

DOUBLE ADAPTOR - Live At The Village Vanguard
If the title hints at jazz references, the product of Double Adaptor’s first effort finds roots in the most granular and harsh end of the electronic movement.

JOHN FOXX - Cathedral Oceans III
With this latest offering in his long career, John Foxx affirms his sense for melody and takes his compositions beyond the realm of traditional ambient.

ANNE GARNER - Re-making The Pearl
Re-making The Pearl collects a series of remixes of tracks from Anne Garner’s currently unreleased debut album. Here, the likes of Richard H. Kirk, Mixmaster Morris or Seán Quinn create a series of interesting versions.

GAUDI:TESTA - Continuum
Perfectly in tune with the sound ethic of Em:t, Continuum relies greatly on space to flourish.

JOHANN JOHANNSSON - Dis
The soundtrack of the film of the same name, Dis sees Icelandic modern classical composer Johann Johannsson sees him collaborate with a wide range of artists and collate an even wider section of genres.

NIGHTMARES ON WAX - In A Space Outta Sound
Four years on from his last album, Nightmares On Wax’s George Evelyn revives his smoky grooves, dub, soul and funk for one more round in space.

OPSVIK&JENNINGS- Fløyel Files
First collaboration between Norwegian bass player Eivind Opsvik and American guitarist Aaron Jennings, Fløyel Files combines acoustic and electronic into a stunning series of evocative vignettes.

PARALLAX BEAT BROTHERS - Autek
Parallax Beat Brothers is a collaboration between multi-percussionist Pete Lockett and sound artist Scanner, and their first effort together is a truly uncompromising and fascinating piece of work.

SINEBAG - Près De La Lisière
Sinebag’s second album exists somewhere between something and nothing through collages of music and sounds.

SPUNK - En Aldeles Forferdelig Sykdom
En Aldeles Forferdelig Sykdom, the third album by all-female experimental formation Spunk, is at once their most accessible, experimental and accomplished. A true achievement from a formation like no other.

TOY - Toy

The project of Britain’s Alisdair Stirling and Norway’s Jorgen Traeen, Toy sounds exactly as its names suggests, a combination of chirpy melodies and chaotic instrumentations.

SHORT CUTS

RICHARD H KIRK Fear (No Evil)
VIZIER OF DAMASCUS Badshadi
