  Cargorecords.co.uk: Burial - Burial

Cargorecords.co.uk: profile Burial - Burial

including:

The first of many 5 star reviews appears in the May issue of IDJ

'Burial' - the album - explores a tangential, parallel dimension of the growing dubstep ouevre, using sounds set in a near-future South London submerged underwater. You can never tell if the crackle is the burning static off pirate radio transmissions, or the tropical downpour of the city outside, taking its loud quiet aesthetic neither from the latest digital glitch software nor a mere nostalgia for vinyl's intrinsic physicality. In their sometimes suffocating melancholy, most of these tracks seem to yearn for drowned lovers, as haunted echoed voices breeze in and out, on roads to and from other times. The smouldering desire of 'Distant Lights' is cooled only by the percussive ice sharp slicing of blades and jets of hot air blowing from the bass. Listen also for a fleeting appearance from Hyperdub's resident vocalist, The Spaceape, unravelling his cryptobiography. 'Burial' is a renegade signal from other frequencies, a tidal wave of seductive low-impact noise submerging all but the crispest syncopations, and is well on course to be universally welcomed as the standard-bearer for creative vision built upon the grime and dubstep blueprint. The first of many 5 star reviews appears in the May issue of IDJ : "Burial dares to move forward by moving two steps backwards... aiming for Rhythm & Sound's singularity and getting amazingly close in the process. Most Jungle producers fetishized the sheen of 'Blade Runner', yet tunes like 'Forgive' actually capture the clammy, heat haze of the movie's rain sodden future world... it's enticing tunnel vision rivals Sakamoto for beauty and Boards of Canada for drift... an absurdly addictive sonic opiate for lovesick drifters. Breathtaking."

Late 20th Century British Popular Music Culture

Discussion on ILM: British Popular Music and 20th Century British Popular Culture - an undergraduate module

Nick Southall on the context:

A friend of mine is planning a module at a local university for their popular cultural studies department in British pop music from 63-99, and he asked me for ideas, opinions and reading suggestions regarding his (very provisional) course outline. I figured the best place to throw this out for brainstorming was here.

So here's his module plan - make suggestions please!

From The Beatles to Brit Pop:
British Popular Music and 20th Century British Popular Culture

This course will critique the socio-cultural impact of British popular music between 1963 and 1999. Songs and LPs will be read as texts which can offer unique insights into British views of class, sex and sexuality, race and politics. We will consider the influence of American culture (Black American culture in particular) on British popular music, the impact of immigration on concepts of Britishness, changing concepts of youth, the impact of changing technologies on music production and consumption, popular music scenes and the importance of location. Every week students will be expected to listen to at least three important LPs, attend a screening and engage in preparatory reading.

  GAM - EISZEIT

Details of a lost krautrock classic, GAM - EISZEIT from Günter Schickert's GAM project, now available at Ultima Thule

Recorded at CCC Studio, Berlin Spandau (1978).
Restored & edited by Alan Freeman (May & December 2002).

Günter Schickert: guitar, vocals, trumpet.
Axel Struck: guitars, vocals.
Michael Leske: drums, percussion.

An album that was almost lost forever. The producer absconded with the mix-down, and the studio mislaid the multi-track tapes, only a first generation cassette survived! You won't believe how good this CD sounds (okay, there are some slight anomalies in the sound effects backing track used on one piece, and a rogue click elsewhere that refused to be removed, but I'm finicky), it's nonetheless a roaring sizzler!

Artist Background:

German pioneer of the echo-guitar, renowned for his classics "Samtvogel" and "Überfällig", he also worked with Klaus Schulze (in concert). Günter also ventured in to more explorative Krautrock and developed a style comparable to the early work of Achim Reichel. The GAM trio (Günter Schickert, Axel Struck, and Michael Leske) featured two guitars and drums, and is really freaked-out improvisations recalling the psychedelic space treks of Ash Ra Tempel or Pink Floyd.

  GUTTERBREAKZ on Boxcutter

GUTTERBREAKZ comments on the new Boxcutter album Oneiric

I think its safe to assume that, for the first half of this year at least, the two big albums to come out under the dubstep banner are this one and Burial's eponymous debut on Hyperdub. Both will probably be hailed as masterpieces, but from different quarters. Whilst Burial's vision is a grainy, haunted, post-'90s reverie, Boxcutter's ultra-modernist standpoint looks only to the future; its outlook is completely utopian, even when shadowed by moments of great poignancy

  Boomkat - Fonal Records

Boomkat have an editorial feature on Finland's Fonal Records

When you think of Finland, what springs to mind? If it revolves around lush forests, wan complexions and reindeer roasts, your cultural stereotypes (whilst adhering to the prevailing consensus) are well past their sell-by-date. These days Finland is all about the music - carving an aural fissure across the leftfield cultural landscape, firing out idiosyncratic releases that succeed in being both fiercely parochial yet blithely borderless. Sounding like nothing you've ever heard before without resorting to fickle novelty, the likes of Paavoharju, Kiila, Kemialliset Ystävät, TV-Resistori and Es have helped stick a blue and white pin into the musical-map; with the chief thumb in this process belonging to Fonal Records.

REVIEWS

BIRD SONG - Lightning Ghost
Bird Show is the solo project of Town And Country’s Ben Vida. On Lightening Ghost, he explores a rather eclectic musical scope and balances out atmospheric moments and more intense compositions.

CAROLINE - Murmurs
Caroline’s first single had her compared to the likes of Björk and Múm, yet she partly fails to deliver over the length of a full album.

DEPTH AFFECT - Arche-Lymb
Arche-Lymb is the impressive debut from French hip-hop-infused electronic outfit Depth Affect. The quartet present here a truly varied and fascinating collection of grooves and tunes.

DEXTRO - Consequence Music
Following a handful of EPs released over the last couple of years, Glasgow-based multi-instrumentist Ewan Mackenzie, AKA Dextro, crafts on his debut album a series of wonderfully evocative and cinematic pieces.

DICTAPHONE - Vertigo II
Dictaphone is the project of Belgian Oliver Doerell and German Roger Döring. Vertigo II, their second album, is a detailed melding of electronic and acoustic elements.

GLISSANDRO 70 - Glissandro 70
Glissandro 70 pay homage to avant-garde disco and classic West End records of the late eighties on their debut album for Montreal-based Constellation Records.

KIERAN HEBDEN & STEVE REID - The Exchange Session Vol. 1
First volume documenting the collaborations between electronic master Kieran Hebden a
