Rip it Up...NME Book of the Year
Congratulations must go to Simon Reynolds his book Rip It Up and Start Again postpunk 1978-1984 has won the.. NME book of the year. [Announced in this week's NME issue]
I reckon Simon needs to contact his business agent/ publisher fast.
With Christmas coming up the book can now be marketed at NME's mostly teenage readership. The book sells more copies and the kids get a music history education [which they are not going to get from the NME].
Get an ad in the next available issue of the NME, with "NME book of the Year" slogan. Get the stickers on the books.
indicative blatant marketing blurb:
Discover the music era that inspired your NME faves Bloc Party & Franz Ferdinand
Also note:
The American edition will be published by Viking Penguin in February 2006.

Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance
Blabbermouth.Net report KATATONIA: Complete New Album Details Revealed; Audio Sample Available
This is one of the most anticipated rock albums of 2006.
Sweden's KATATONIA have set "The Great Cold Distance" as the title of their seventh full-length album, due on March 13, 2006 via Peaceville Records.
"The Great Cold Distance" track listing:
01. Leaders
02. Deliberation
03. Soil's Song
04. My Twin
05. Consternation
06. Follower
07. Rusted
08. Increase
09. July
10. In The White
11. The Itch
12. Journey Through Pressure
Single: My Twin can be sampled online in an edit format. To me this sounds at times like Bob Mould's Sugar era plus Porcupine Tree and The Cure inspirations. However the band come from an Atmospheric Metal background when willl they cross-over to core alternative audiences that their obvious talent merits

2005 Music Lists
I have reorganized the information design of my 2005 Lists webpage: More Best of 2005 Music Links throughout December this will grow and grow.
New 2005 best of music links will be initially collected on my del.icio.us account: del.icio.us/djmartian/b2005
Last year it worked rather well, I then did selective recaps every couple of days on the blog.
[if you use a RSS reader such as Bloglines there is an RSS Feed available for these links]
I will particularly look for lists covering these music styles:
Avant/Art-Rock [Post Rock to Avant Prog to Psychedelic Rock]
Experimental Electronic Music / Ambient / Space Music
Minimal House/ Tech-House/ Techno/ Electro/ Electronic Pop
Jazz
Extreme/ Dark Metal
lists outside the dominant UK/ USA axis, e.g Scandinavian countries
I will NOT be listing & blogging every list.
In particular I can't see the point of blogging "Indie Rock Robots" lists [i.e readers of Magnet magazine/ Paste / Plan B / Pitchfork etc] i.e the same 10/20/30/40 albums from high profile American and Canadian songs based "Indie Rock" artists listed again and again. Why can't these people expand their limited music horizons and do some listening research of their own ?
I also will be avoiding awful mainstream rock sub-NME/Q type lists i.e anything that has White Stripes, Coldplay and Kaiser Chiefs etc. Although I want be able to resist laughing at the NME top 50 albums of 2005 that is due this coming week.

Stuart Nicholson on New Jazz Talent for the 21st Century
OMM article by writer/jazz critic Stuart Nicholson who spotlights 6 new breed jazz artists: Welcome to our world
Jazz was the great American art form of the twentieth century. Now everyone else is muscling in. Stuart Nicholson picks six of the best of the new breed breaking free from the code.
Artists Featured:
Arve Henriksen: I have featured Arve many times on this blog, he is also a member of Supersilent - who are widely recognized as esteemed creative musicians.
Matthew Bourne: Another talented artist I have featured before. A british jazz artist from Leeds, who mixes piano with electronics on the album: The Electric Dr M(Sound)
Solveig Slettahjell: A new artist to me. This 34 year old Norwegian female jazz singer has three CDs out on the Oslo based Curling label. The album Pixiedust is slated for release in the UK next year on the ACT label.
Aron Ottignon: Another new artist for me. Apparently has a project called Culture Tunnels
Alexi Tuomarila A Finnish jazz artist has an album called 02 - released on Warner Brothers a couple of years ago.
The Bad Plus - Are a well known contemporary jazz group from the US.

Mixing symphonic prog with metal, jazz, a slight hint of zeuhl and RIO, and an overall sound that is somehow very French is a formula for success for Nil. Context:
It's in the air, I just feel it: Burst is gonna explode, I can tell you that! This band will be big, at least in extreme metal-context. Their new album 'Origo' is another step into exhilarating extreme metal perfection, whereby predecessor 'Prey On Life' was already a giant monster. Their mix from metalcore, death metal, hardcore and thrash metal gets more depth by inventive use of seventies prog and psychedelic music.

Google Base
This should be of interest to many readers, a new free web publishing solution from Google.
Some content is better managed outside a blog format and Google today has launched Google Base that looks rather interesting.
Google Blogscoped provide an overview: Google Base Officially Live Now
You could use it for example:
To create end of year music lists/ reviews
A Profile / About Page for your blog [to promote and describe your blog]
Promote events e.g Create an online flyer
Looking to start a new band, create a wanted ad
Create articles [good for long "Simon Reynolds" type analytical articles]
Ofcourse when you create content using Google Base you can easily link to it from your existing blog.
A new web service from Google: Google Base
Help the world find your content.
Google Base is a place where you can add all types of information that we'll host and make searchable online.
You can describe any item you post with attributes, which will help people find it when they search Google Base. In fact, based on the relevance of your items, they may also be included in the main Google search index and other Google products like Froogle and Google Local.
About Google Base
You will see Google Base uses Labels [that are similar to the concept of tagging in social bookmark systems] and Attributes that further describe your content to improve web findability.
What are labels and attributes?
Google Base enables you to include detailed information about your Google Base items called labels and attributes, which will help users find your content more easily when they search on Google Base or other Google properties.
Labels are any keywords or phrases ? such as recipe, event, or product ? that can be used to classify or describe your item.
Attributes are words or phrases that help describe the characteristics and qualities of your items. You may enter multiple values for a particular attribute separated by commas.
This looks interesting:
Google Base will accept bulk uploads in TSV, RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0 and Atom 0.3 formats. This means that content providers who already have RSS feeds can easily submit their content to Google Base without requiring much additional work.

One Louder Quick Takes: on Deaf Center - Pale Ravine
Electronic music from Norway on Type Records
Type records : Deaf Center : Pale Ravine
‘Pale Ravine’ is an album which again manages to blend elements of classical music with electronic music, yet there is something decidedly different which sets it apart from the competition. While there are elements that can be compared with contemporaries such as Max Richter, Marsen Jules or Ryan Teague – Deaf Center is altogether more other-worldly, darker and ultimately very rewarding.

rateyourmusic.com update Best Albums of 2005
On November 9th there was a complete data update of album ranking at rateyourmusic.com. I have accessed the expanded data to list the top 1000 rated albums of 2005.
Within 2 days [1 day for the US] Kate Bush - Aerial was ranked @ 158, expect this album to rocket up when the next update comes.
Top 1000 Albums of 2005
Having looked at the top 1000 list, there are many average albums and some fine albums not even making the list.
I would say albums fall into these 3 categories:
1. High Profile/ Established Artists
These artists that have a larger enough fan base to make it to this list. However the lower the album ranks this may give an indication of the [lack of] qualities of the album.
2. Niche Genre Appeal / Cult of Community:
The bulk of the albums fall into this category.
Artists that are well known in a particular niche genre are more likely to be rated favourably.
As you slide down the 1000 list, obscure artists that are virtually complete unknowns outside of their niche community are likely to be ranked.
However an album that is performing well on the list by an obscure artist could give an indication to the positive qualities of an album.
3. Word of Mouth/ Crossover Appeal
Albums that are performing well due to positive reviews, word-of-mouth, media exposure etc. They have outgrown mere genre niche appeal but are not [yet] part of the mainstream. These albums can easily be spotted in the top 100 and to a lesser extent outside the 100.
............
A selective look at some of the albums outside the top 100:
106. High on Fire: Blessed Black Wings [Intense psychedelic heavy rock delivered with style]
125: Colleen: The Golden Morning Breaks [An album that is likely to do rather well on end of year polls.]
129 Sunn O))): Black One [Terrorizer front cover stars of art-metal]
134 Lightning Bolt: Hypermagic Mountain [I am surprised this isn't doing better]
135 New Order: Waiting for the Sirens' Call [a rather New Order by numbers album that hasn't delivered musically or on this poll]
148 Van Der Graaf Generator: Present [Progressive rock Veterans come back with a passionate & emotional album]
149 Elbow: Leaders of the Free World [Elbow remain cult faves on the fringes of the mainstream in terms of popularity]
152 Shining: In The Kingdom Of Kitsch You Will Be A Monster [A great challenging rock album on Rune Grammofon]
159 Editors: The Back Room [The Best pensive Joy Division clone ever to come out of the West Midlands]
160 Konono No. 1: Congotronics [From Congo delivering the rhythms - performing well]
164 Vitalic: Ok Cowboy [Dance fans probably find rateyourmusic too rockist to rate albums ;-) ]
165 Serena Maneesh: Serena-Maneesh [See what a positive review in Pitchfork can do for - Shoegazer types from Norway]
171 Wilderness: Wilderness [Another Pitchfork approved album, the best example of a band doing John Lydon karaoke heard all year]
188 Ladytron: Witching Hour [A shift in music direction but Ladytron remain niche faves]
193 Arcturus: Sideshow Symphonies [A change in direction to a more symphonic progressive metal direction has resulted in Arcturus not performing as well as expected]
213 Alog: Miniatures [Doing well for a obscure artist on Rune Grammofon]
215 Out Hud: Let Us Never Speak of It Again [This style of music has past it's critical zenith of a few years ago.]
232 The Fall: Fall Heads Roll [Always will remain cult faves]
252 Isolée: Wearemonster [You do realize that this is number 1 album on Metacritic best albums of 2005 at the mo, ahead of competition from Sufjan Stevens and Kate Bush. Obviously not enough dance / electronic music fans use rateyourmusic.com]
256 Primordial: The Gathering Wilderness [A superb atmospheric metal album, a good example of a band performing very well on this poll comparative to their overall profile]
276 HRSTA: Stem Stem In Electro [One of the better avant-rock albums of 2005]
280 Moonsorrow: Verisäkeet [Viking Metal from Finland]
346 Guapo: Black Oni [Avant-Prog from Britain very psychedelic]
353 The Juan Maclean: Less Than Human [Big faves on Dirtyradio.net]
355 Akercocke: Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone [Post Progressive Black Metal from England]
357 Taake:...Doedskvad [From Norway, this is the highest rated pure black metal album on the 1000 list. ]
376 Wobbler: Hinterland [Great bombastic progressive rock from Norway. Mellotrons played like it's the early 70s again]
383 Simple Minds: Black & White 050505 [Lack of airplay, hardly any media coverage sees Simple Minds cast into obscurity outside of the mainstream]
399 Mu [GBR]: Out Of Breach (Manchester's Revenge) [Not everyone listens to the Breezeblock show ?]
439 Asva: Futurists Against the Ocean [A great heavy psychedelic art-metal album, superb atmospherics]
446 Nine Horses: Snow Borne Sorrow [I am surprised this is not performing better, poor overseas distribution ? Definately a top tier album of 2005. Emotional and Evocative]
458 Riverside: Second Life Syndrome [Superb atmospheric rock from Poland, destined for cult appeal only. With more media coverage this album would easily be a lot higher]
480 Ion Dissonance: Solace [Touted as Canada's big hope for extreme tech-metal]
503 Novembers Doom: The Pale Haunt Departure [One of the better metal albums of 2005, very atmospheric]
522 Cage [rap]: Hell's Winter [Underground hip-hop on Def Jux]
540 Tunng: Mother's Daughter And Other Songs [Folktronica remains a restricted niche genre in terms of popularity]
588 Larsen: Play [esteemed Italian avant rock]
590 Ellen Allien: Thrills [Obviously all the dance fans are using discogs not rateyourmusic.com ]
633 Swarm of the Lotus: The Sirens of Silence [Likely to appeal to Neurosis fans]
637 Drudkh: The Swan Road [Arty Black Metal with a strong cult following in the underground]
646 World's End Girlfriend: The Lie Lay Land [Impressive collage of styles]
667 Keith Fullerton Whitman: Multiples [not everyone reads Brainwashed.com]
698 Axis of Perdition: Deleted Scenes From the Transition Hospital [Industrial Black Metal is most likely to remain in relative obscurity]
699 Marsen Jules: Herbstlaub [Likely to place high in many electronic music end of year pols at Boomkat]
727 Murcof: Remembranza [Experimental electronic music from Mexico, likely to perform well in Boomkat end of year charts]
756 Jan Jelinek: Kosmischer Pitch [A change of musical style, I guess this album is likely to climb in the future once word-of-mouth spreads]
774 Bohren & Der Club of Gore: Geisterfaust [A challenging heavy rhythmic album]
778 Buried Inside: Chronoclast [This album picked up some considerably good reviews earlier in the year. One of many bands following in the post Neurosis sound]
781 Monolake: Polygon_Cities [Another album likely to do well in Boomkat end of year charts]
797 Miriodor: Parade [Avant Prog from Canada. Not as good as their classic Mekano album released earlier in the decade!]
815 Gojira: From Mars to Sirius [French Metal band picking up positive reviews]
833 Malory: The Third Face [Superb Shoegazer soundsmiths from Germany]
839 Frantic Bleep: The Sense Apparatus [One of the finest rock albums of the year, superb production, unfortunately destined for obscurity]
844 Hate Eternal: I, Monarch [Considered one of the best death metal albums of 2005]
856 Octavia Sperati: Winter Enclosure [Atmospheric metal from Norway]
882 Julien Neto: Le Fumeur de Ciel [an album likely to perform well on Boomkat end year of charts from the esteemed British based Type label]
959 Scar Symmetry: Symmetric In Design [Melodo death metal done rather well]
999 Urdog: Eyelid of Moon [Psychedelic spacey rock from the US]

PostEverything profile 'Et In Arcadia Ego' by The Village Orchestra
Label: [Highpoint Lowlife]
Release Date: November 28th
The Village Orchestra is the solo project of Ruaridh Law, best known as one third of Glasgow electronic dunces, the Marcia Blaine School For Girls (Awkward Silence, Static Caravan, Benbecula, Dalriada).
For influences, think Philip Glass, Coil, Desormais, Speedy J, Ol? Dirty Bastard, Carl Craig, The Bug ? throw these inspirations in a blender and you are somewhere to understanding where this sound emanates from.
Released on: [ Highpoint Lowlife Records ]
The Village Orchestra - Et In Arcadia Ego
"Fair play to Highpoint Lowlife, they really are consistently coming up with supreme releases. The Village Orchestra (an offshoot of Marcia Blaine School for Girls) seems very influenced by Brian Eno, but then who isn't these days? The approach to ambient textures and the more gently beat-driven tracks sounds very much in his latter-day style, with maybe hints of Murcof and Shuttle 358. A very impressive album all round, highly recommended. " Smallfish Records

SuprGlu
What? SuprGlu is about bringing the pieces of your web content together into one central place for you, your friends, and maybe even your friends to-be.
It's a very smart idea: SuprGlu - Gluing your life together. [it works with any web based service that uses RSS or ATOM feeds]
Do you already use services like del.icio.us, flickr, blogger, typepad, etc? SuprGlu is a new way to gather all your content from those sites. In a nutshell, SuprGlu:
* gathers your content from popular webservices and publishes them in one convenient place.
* presents your content with simple, great looking templates which you can customize.
* is FREE to use!
Web 2.0 review guru Emily Chang reviews SuprGlu
It?s simple to select from available sources - add your username from 43 Places, 43 Things, All consuming, Blogger, del.icio.us, flickr, last.fm, LiveJournal, or Xanga - and pull in your latest posts, data or activity. Or, you can opt to add the URL of your RSS feeds.
SuprGlu acts as a meta-blog of your selected network - in my case, of my own blogs, writing, commenting, bookmarking, media sharing, and general web activity.
I reckon that SuprGlu is a very smart idea and the templates look ace. Must investigate soon.

themilkfactory.co.uk interview Magnetophone
Formed in Birmingham at the end of the nineties by John Hanson and Matt Saunders, Magnetophone presented, with their first EPs and album, a rather unusual and captivating musical vision, rooted as much in indie rock and obscure pop and it was in contemporary electronica. Five years on, the duo return a magnificent sophomore effort, just in time to take part in the festivities for 4AD?s twenty-fifth anniversary. As they gear up to a unique live performance in London, we catch up with, Matt Saunders, one half of Magnetophone.

themilkfactory.co.uk ISSUE #72 NOVEMBER 2005: Summary
themilkfactory.co.uk deliver another fine selection of reviews. [The summaries below are from themilkfactory.co.uk e-mail/website, to see the full reviews go to the link above]
ALBUM OF THE MONTH
SUPERSILENT - 7
For this latest output, Supersilent were captured in their natural environment, at their rawest, most unpredictable and visceral, improvising live in front of a crowd.
REVIEWS
AFX - Hangable Auto Bulb
Originally published as two extremely limited EPs then years ago, Hangable Auto Bulb part one and two have now been compiled onto one essential album.
CHRISTOPHER BISSONNETTE - Periphery
The debut album from Christopher Bissonnette is a striking dark and dramatic piece of work that combines stark electronics and minimal orchestral structures.
VASHTI BUNYAN - Lookaftering
Thirty-five years in the making, Vashti Bunyan?s second album is the perfect follow up to the amazing Just Another Diamond Day.
GREG DAVIS & SEBASTIEN ROUX - Paquet Surprise
Third in a collaborations released this year, Paquet Surprise sees Greg Davis team up with IRCAM composer Sebastien Roux for a stunning journey through sound and atmospheres.
VLADISLAV DELAY - The Four Quarters / THE DOLLS -The Dolls
On his latest solo project, Vladislav Delay offers a rather clinical vision of his usual sound, while his collaboration with AGF and Craig Armstrong, as The Dolls, often proves no more than a juxtaposition of characters.
MAGNETOPHONE - The Man Who Ate The Man
Over four years after they introduced their highly deconstructed form of electronica, Magnphone return with their sophomore album on which their flirt with rock structures through a series of collaborations.
BRIAN MCBRIDE - When The Detail Lost Its Freedom
When The Detail Lost Its Freedom is the debut solo album from Stars Of The Lid?s Brian McBride on which he explore a wider sonic range than with his band.
THE ORB Orbsessions / Okie Dokie It's The Orb On Kompakt
While Orbsessions Vol. 1 collects some previously unreleased material spanning fifteen years, Okie Dokie? sees Alex Paterson and Thomas Felhmann produce The Orb?s most pertinent material to date.
SUTEKH - Born Again
Born Again offers an interesting retrospective of various remixes by Sutekh, spanning over six years and spread over two volumes.
TRANSISTOR - Relief
Relief is the debut album from Mexican-based artist Edgar Medina, yet nothing here betrays the origin of this work. Instead, the music on this album is clearly the product of a global digital culture.
TUSSLE - Kling Klang
On this, their debut album, San Francisco?s Tussle get all groovy and offer an updated version of the Cabaret Voltaire and A Certain Ratio of the early eighties.
THE VILLAGE ORCHESTRA - Et In Arcadia Ego
Best known for his involvement with Scottish electronic trio The Marcia Blaine School For Girls, Ruaridh Law presents his debut album as The Village Orchestra.

MetalReview of Solefald - Red For Fire - An Icelandic Odyssey Part I
the duo of Lazare (who also has served in Borknagar, Asmegin and Age of Silence) and Cornelius has delivered a stunning album that manages to combine the band’s unconventional black metal stylings with Viking austerity and grandiosity. The most fitting term I came up with was ‘eccentric Nordic majesty.’
.. Red For Fire comes with a warning tag due to its pretty non traditional take on metal and progressive tendencies that comes across like Enslaved meeting Arcturus at a Viking attire only poetry reading. But in my books that’s a pretty exclusive and brilliant club.

Knut - Terraformer
Stream the new album by Knut: Terraformer
STREAM IT !
A masterpiece of ambient metal-noisecore-postrock-drone-doom-psychedelia-industrialized-dub-rock.
If any of the following interest you: Neurosis, Isis, Envy, Mogwai, Killing Joke, The Young Gods, Explosions in the Sky, Sonic Youth, The God Machine, PIL, Popul Vuh, Godspeed you Black Emperor, Cult of Luna, Minsk - then you should experience Knut.
This is a mighty impressive album, a strong candidate for the best [mostly] instrumental rock album of the year.
Knut on this album are proved as master exponents of atmospherics, from the slow to the hyper-fast, the detailed laced psychedelic guitar work, the pummeling rythmics, the incorporation of spoken word and sampled electronics, at times the drums pound with crushing intensity, the bass guitar flows like molten lava streaming down an erupting volcano. Mighty Impressive.
Albums as supreme as this don't come around that often, brilliance is recognized NOW experience it.
