Dieter Schöön - LaBlaza: A Significant New Discovery for 2007

Introducing, a significant new discovery for 2007 Dieter Schöön from Gothenburg, Sweden

DOTSHOP.SE - Dieter Schöön: LaBlaza

apparently: HEAR YE! This is the best Swedish pop album of 2007 for you. Simple as that.

Headspin Recordings (HEAD006CD)
August 27th, 2007

There's lots of material fatigue in the concept of "true originality". And still dear brethren, one can't do nothing but surrender at the mighty dead cool feet of Swedish starborn Dieter Schöön. His debut album "LaBlaza" is a pure fresh embodiment of that very concept. He sings like a god. With a dead calm not heard since god knows. An alienated working class hero waving from his LaBlaza balcony over the harbour. A king of Sunday morning empires, a testimony of frustration, outsiderism, inner strength and true raw soulful talent. If anything in this world is worth raving about, then dear citizens, we bid you to pay homage and respect to this truly worthy nova!

Unique? Original? Most people associate true originality in the world of music with sounds and ideas they've met before, but, so as not to lose at least some handle of familiarity, rearranged in a new way of sorts.

Dieter Schöön's reference points on "LaBlaza" are endless. After a while different textures appear; a sudden Cohenesque deviation; an early days Bowiesque sound coupled with sudden eruptions of Jens Lekman, or a pasted minute of breathless freeform DFA or a forlorn damaged Hot Chip with tales to tell.

On top of it all, floating EFFORTLESSLY, Dieter Schöön's melancholic, slackery voice, binding it all together. A voice filled with seemingly dead easy confidence, a character trait that all in all is the foundation of the whole record.

To all appearances a late debut at 37years of age, but Dieter has been around since the mid-eighties. Playing occasional drums in Punk Funk Union, Silverbullit or Goldmine; creating alter egos like Zeke Schöön, a much more electro/club orientated personality, that'd rather create deep beats on 12"s; or the mind-boggling project Svenson, who played Hultsfred in 2002 as a giant vanillacream-squirting rubberfoam phallos. Dieter's been there, living and breathing music all through the 90's up until today.

"LaBlaza" stands forth as an exceptionally convincing debut album of the year.

on myspace 4 tracks from the album: www.myspace.com/dieterschoon

the music reminds me of Max Tundra, Beck and Wire from the late 80s / early 90s and Norwegian artist When - interesting weird psychedelic art-pop-rock with some electronics.

I reckon music webzines such as Pitchfork, Dusted and Stylus will be all over this album !

I listen to hundreds of artists each year and this is definitely strong A grade material !

Abigail's Ghost is an art rock band comprised of five people committed to a well-tempered musical aesthetic deeply rooted in groove, polyrhythms, lush harmonies, haunting ambience, and thinking man's lyrics. More fundamental is their commitment to creating multi-format material, resulting in a convergence of musical thought that extends beyond hybrid genres but maintains a certain distance from concepts of the avante-garde.

Burnt Friedman

New album: Nonplace - 22 - First Night Forever

Press release via FE

FRIEDMAN, BURNT: First Night Forever CD (NON 022CD) : OUT 09/25/2007 This is Burnt Friedman's fourth studio full-length for the Nonplace label. Navigating an atypical musical expedition, Burnt Friedman's unusual trajectory curved its way through an adolescent obsession with percussion and a singular dedication to amassing a self-recorded audio library dating from1978. What followed in the late '80s was a period of art academia, performance and video art, then immersion in the first flurry of collaborative music projects. Since 1993, he released records under various names, and began working as Flanger with Uwe Schmidt aka Atom TM. As a result of annual travels to Australia and New Zealand, The Nu Dub Players took shape in 1997. In the year 2000, Friedman founded his own label, Nonplace, to ensure continuity for diverse musical adventures. Then there was the first collaborative effort in 2001 with Jaki Liebezeit and Joseph Suchy, which successfully combined odd meter rhythms, improvisation between electronic and acoustic instruments and a global view on music. Burnt Friedman's sound-sculpting signature has fully developed intuitively with true emotional maximalism. Guest contributors also include Hayden Chisholm (composer and reed player), singers Steve Spacek, Barbara Panther, Theo Altenberg, Daniel Dodd-Ellis and Enik as well as guitarist Joseph Suchy. Although First Night Forever houses the complete spectrum of 7 years' psychedelic audio wizardry, the record's aim is to reach a wide audience. Burnt's earlier solo productions, Con Ritmo (2000), Plays Love Songs (2001) and Can't Cool (2003) might have confused with their stylistic freedom and intricate perfectionism, but First Night Forever will simply enthrall everyone with a sense of eroticism.

Press release via FE

ROAM THE HELLO CLOUDS: Near Misses CD (SCAPE 045CD) : OUT 08/21/2007 This is the debut recording by Australia's Roam The Hello Clouds, a group made up of members Laurence Pike (of Triosk), Dave Miller and Phil Slater. Near Misses is a rare combination that will make many lovers of jazz and/or electronic music delirious. At a glance, some might mistakenly classify it as jazz/electronica mainly due to Slater's soaring trumpet (reminiscent of Miles Davis circa Bitches Brew) in combination with Miller's subtle electronics and Pike's untethered drumming. The musicians used chance and error as their modus operandi, inviting the unknown and then manipulating it into something cool and free, from abstract to electronic. In October 2003, Sydney-based drummer Laurence Pike was paired up with Perth laptop artist Dave Miller in a musical blind date for a performance at the Sydney Opera House. It turned out to be the meeting of kindred spirits. Pike called upon trumpeter Phil Slater to complete what he thought would be an ideal musical partnership for a one-off collaboration. And he was right -- about the partnership, but fortunately not about it being a one-off thing. The following year, a second performance was scheduled, and with only two gigs under their belts, the band set about trying to capture the intuitive nature of their exciting live performances in a studio situation. The result is this album of unrehearsed group improvisation recorded in a single day. What you hear is a live band; playing and processing and recording in takes, much the way they used to do in the '60s. Even Dave Miller's sound sources came almost exclusively from live on-the-fly sampling from the band's previous gigs. They fuse together with a breathtaking musical rapport, yet always retain their individual characteristics.

Susanna

Press Release via FE

SUSANNA: Sonata Mix Dwarf Cosmos CD (RCD 2066CD) : OUT 08/21/2007 This is the debut solo album from Norway's Susanna Karolina Wallumrød, who is most known for two sublime albums and a number of quietly powerful concerts with Susanna and the Magical Orchestra, a duo which includes member Morten Qvenild (Jaga Jazzist, Shining, In The Country). This time she is simply "Susanna," and she has written twelve highly personal songs that make up this beautiful and quite extraordinary album. She plays piano and guitar and guests include brother and ECM recording artist Christian Wallumrød (piano), Magical Orchestra partner Morten Qvenild (piano, synth), Big Bang leader Øystein Greni (guitar), The White Birch leader Ola Fløttum (guitar), In The Country drummer Pål Hausken, Helge Sten (guitar, mellotron) and Giovanna Pessi (harp). As Rune Grammofon label head Rune Kristoffersen makes clear: "In these fast and restless times of instant entertainment and shortways to possible success, it's a rare treat to witness a young and genuinely talented singer and writer that operates to such a degree outside trends and fashions. Much in the same way as a young Tim Buckley, Nico or Scott Walker without making too much of those comparisons. We are delighted with this lovely addition to the catalog, a work of uncompromising dedication inviting us to reflect and to listen." Sonata Mix Dwarf Cosmos is produced by Deathprod (Helge Sten).

Available to pre-order at Norman Records: Sonata Mix Dwarf Cosmos, by Susanna (Rune Grammofon)

Uphill Racer

Listen on myspace: www.myspace.com/uphillracer - similar to The Notwist and Beck

Press release via FE

UPHILL RACER: You Will Understand CD (NORM 027CD) : OUT 08/21/2007 This is the second full-length release from singer/songwriter, Uphill Racer (Oliver Lichtl). Uphill Racer is a multi instrumentalist, a one-man chamber orchestra brimming with harmonies, elegies and gifted with the knack of effortlessly pouring his emotions into fantastic songs that immediately move and touch. He has been compared quite justifiably to artists such as Beck, Badly Drawn Boy, The Notwist and Thom Yorke. One year has passed since his debut No Need To Laugh was released and since then, Uphill Racer has embraced the will and courage to experiment. You Will Understand is permeated with space sounds which were prevalent though hard to place on the first album and which now contribute to the spherical and inimitability of the latest release. Flora, fauna and film are once again welcome guests in the idiosyncratic structures built out of acoustic guitar, bass, sleigh bells, drums and beats, piano, synthesizer and the voice -- the voice which effortlessly blends into the instrumentation and textually as well as melodically bears a beacon in the night. Lichtl once again plays all the instruments himself and sings every word on the album. You Will Understand is a fortress, a refuge, a shield of protection from the world. The pathos of the first album gives way to a more confident and versatile emotionality. The music is a perfect companion for a train trip on a sunny day and nevertheless as sentimental as a nosedive onto soft cushions.

Uusitalo

Press release via FE

UUSITALO: Karhunainen CD (HUUME 014CD) : OUT 10/09/2007 Berlin-based Vladislav Delay (aka Sasu Ripatti, Luomo) releases a third techno album under his Uusitalo disguise. Influenced by and named after his late father's well-known theatre play, Karhunainen (Bear Woman) Delay continues to search for his rhythmic roots. With his groove offerings from the past he often resembled an undertaker at a disco. This new album might change some of those impressions, with more up-front beats than he has ever created before. In spite of being noted for experimental sounds and compositions not yet heard, some of his warmest feelings are reserved for the drum beat. This deep-rooted loyalty to rhythms, even though hidden and strangled in most of his productions, is about to come to the surface again. And above all else, he is a rhythm passionista, a drum collector, a cymbal maker -- a true percussion freak. The new album consists of 10 songs, 8 of which are dedicated to the infamous bass drum. In an act of conspicuous non-consumption, he chose to only use analog equipment on this album and leave all digital sound processing out, which explains the warm and full sound of the album. His rhythmic fortune is used to great effect on Karhunainen -- he quite wonderfully replaces the drum machines on more than a few tracks with a drum stick and anything else he could hit, be it random metal surfaces or his young daughter's toys. To complete the album, there's hauntingly beautiful tracks with cinematic beginnings and endings. This is a mix of traditionalism and futurism, coming through in the song titles, artwork and design. The artwork is by Kaisa Kemikoski, but the booklet also introduces another aspect of the producer himself; he's a keen photographer and his private collection captures the world around him, making up the raw material for the 16-page booklet.

Article about dubstep in Chicago: NEWCITYCHICAGO.COM: Street Smart Chicago

Does dubstep stand a chance in America? A small, devoted group of fans and producers are eager to find out, as they attempt to bring the largely British genre to the Windy City.

Dubstep is something of a musical mutt, with roots in the British electronic scenes of garage, drum ‘n’ bass, jungle, techno and trace amounts of several other genres that never quite made it across the pond. Its sound is just as diverse as its lineage with one feature carrying through all its strains: teeth-rattling bass

Mercury Music Prize 2007 Shortlist Announced

These are the 12 that have made the shortlist:

* Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare
* Basquiat Strings featuring Seb Rochford - Basquiat Strings
* Bat for Lashes - Fur & Gold
* Dizzee Rascal - Maths & English
* Jamie T - Panic Prevention
* Klaxons - Myths of the Near Future
* Maps - We Can Create
* New Young Pony Club - Fantastic Playroom
* Fionn Regan - The End of History [Who?: Drowned in Sound - Listings - Artists - Fionn Regan]
* The View - Hats Off to the Buskers
* Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
* The Young Knives - Voices of Animals and Men

Mostly predictable, the only who? is Fionn Regan. The Young Knives are mediocre and unremarkable.

Seb Rochford got the token jazz nomination, he is also a member of Polar Bear who were nominated previously for the Mercuries. [Review: Basquiat Strings with Seb Rochford, Basquiat Strings | | Guardian Unlimited Arts]

Mercury Music Prize 2007 - Shortlist Predictions

The Nationwide Mercury Prize shortlist nominations [AKA Mercury Music Prize] are announced at 11.30am on Tuesday 17th July [Today]. [Official Website: Nationwide Mercury Prize]

I have created a list; Some Eligible Albums for the Mercury Music Prize 2007. i.e British or Irish Artists who released an album between July 18th 2006 and July 9th 2007.

LIST: Mercury Music Prize 2007 Eligibility - Rate Your Music [182 Albums]

Updated: July 17th

Note: I am not endorsing all these albums ! This list is just an indication of some albums that are eligible. I have omitted some higher profile artists that I particularly don't rate. I have dealt with these on this blog post.

Unfortunately, I don't know which albums have entered the competition.

Suggestions / Predictions for the Shortlist:

I will have a shot of the predictions, going on media hype, and the type and mix of artists that typically make up the Mercury Shortlist of 12

Bat for Lashes (Debut Album, deserves to be nominated.)

Cherry Ghost (Debut Album, serious newcomers the type of music the Word / Mojo / Uncut magazine gets excited about)

Jarvis Cocker (Token Established Male Artist]

Julie Fowlis (Folk Artist, as seen on Jools Holland Later show)

Fraud (Debut Album) (token jazz)

Gallows (The rock choice, tons of hype from NME, Rock Sound and Kerrang)

Klaxons (Debut Album, much hyped)

Long Blondes (Debut Album, added bonus with female singer - the Mercury judges will surely include this?)

Simian Mobile Disco (another electronic choice to go with the Klaxons)

The Soulsavers (seems to be Mercury type album, a mix of styles)

Amy Winehouse (The media seem to love this album. Everyone is tipping this to be on the shortlist)

Patrick Wolf (Surely now that he is on a major label, the record company have paid the entrance fee? Loads of positive publicity, deserves to make it.)

Another 20 that could make the shortlist:

Acoustic Ladyland (this album certainly sounded unique and different)

Tom Arthurs (possible jazz selection)

Captain (if they go for a well crafted melodic pop-rock album)

The Chemical Brothers (Will they make the Mercury Prize shortlist again?)

Crippled Black Phoenix (maybe too leftfield / obscure for the shortlist?)

Dizzee Rascal (Will he make a return to the Shortlist, possibly?)

Siobhan Donaghy (the Mercury Music prize likes to a have few female singers in the shortlist)

Electrelane [If Plan B magazine had there way it would be in)

Fields (Does having an Icelandic member rule them out?)

Field Music (Their media profile has improved, could be outsiders for their melodic quirky pop-rock album)

The Good, The Bad & the Queen (This project had loads of media coverage)

Calvin Harris (Radio 1 love it, the new Mylo - could make the shortlist)

Maps (Too leftfield for the Mercury Music Prize?)

James Holden (The album got good reviews)

New Young Pony Club (the Nu-Rave hyped merchants, if the Mercury music want to be trendy it may be selected)

Pop Levi (T-Rex type retro pop-rock, could possibly make it.)

Gruff Rhys (Could the Welsh get represented on the Shortlist this year?)

Skream (Was it entered?)

Tracey Thorn (Could get the established female singer vote)

Wiley (Could get the Urban selection)

Some other artists who released eligible albums that I don't rate from a personal perspective, but could be on the Mercury radar:

Beware, the horrible mainstream !

The Arctic Monkeys (More generic guitar tripe from the NME darlings)
The Cribs (Lammo: Steve Lamacq / NME approved guitar rubbish)
The Enemy (One dimensional retro rubbish for teenagers)
The Fratellis (The Second worst band in Scotland 06/07 Season. NME backed guitar drivel)
Jamie T (More over hyped indie drivel aimed at students)
Beverley Knight (Boring Soul music, heard it all before)
Kasabian (Retro Baggy Lad Rock with no originality.)
Manic Street Preachers (Their new sound is even more bland than before.)
Paul McCartney (Could get the established male token section)
Candie Payne (adult oriented pop-rock music a slightly better Texas with more of a soul singer vibe, been hyped by certain sections of the media. Hyped but boring.)
The Rakes (Xfm / NME approved wordy drivel)
Razorlight (The Kings of Moronic Singalong Rock. Ghastly, music for morons.)
The Twang (Sounding like a 3rd rate baggy band circa 90/91)
The View (The Worst guitar band in Scotland and the United Kingdom 06/07, chav-indie for gormless teenagers.)

Most of these were also mentioned by the NME: Nationwide Mercury Prize shortlist set to be announced | News | NME.COM

Blogger, In League With Paton: In League With Paton: The Usual Pointless Predicting... and On the NME's suggested list of what might make the shortlist: In League With Paton: I'm One Step Ahead Of The Game...

Discussion on ILM: mercury music prize: 2007

By the way, my personal shortlist suggestions:

Although some of the debate is lost in a semantic jungle, there can be no doubt the moronic [mostly] Brit guitar tripe promoted by the NME and the blando-rock agenda of Q magazine has resulted in the ghastly stagnation of mainstream music as represented / presented / controlled by the media.

This music is so inconsequential however it's media saturation is so overbearing.

The problem is the mainstream media be it print, radio, TV - doesn't highlight the numerous alternative options available, it deliberately restricts choice.

I still think if NME had a weekly competitor ala Sounds or Melody Maker [done in the style of MM 1987/88] things would improve. A high profile weekly music magazine promoting completely different music agendas to the ghastly moronic NME.

  David Galas - The Cataclysm

David Galas previously a member of darkwave legends, Lycia released an album last year [The Cataclysm] that somehow slipped under the buzz radar.

Listen on myspace: www.myspace.com/davidgalas

I have tagged this music post-gothic rock [dark, serious, sombre, atmospheric music of the highest order, that recalls Swans in the 1990s and Beyond Dawn]

I notice the one and only Ned Raggett in an AMG review rightly calls this album a masterpiece: The Cataclysm: Information from Answers.com

and Galas's long-brewing work proves itself to be a masterpiece. ~ Ned Raggett, All Music Guide

Heathen Harvest review of 'The Cataclysm'. rated it the best album of 2006: Heathen Harvest - Reviews: David Galas - The Cataclysm

"I cannot think of a way to describe how this masterpiece made me feel other than it gave me a 75-minute long orgasm fueled by gothic lust. It truely amazes me that my top album of 2006 would come in at the very last minute." -Lord Lycan

David Galas - The Cataclysm - Ultimate Metal Forum:

If you are looking for a out of mind and out of body listening experience, David Galas’ The Cataclysm may be the record you are looking for.

even on rateyourmusic.com the album is in obscurity at the mo:
