  Anouar Brahem Interview

All About Jazz interview ECM recording artist Anouar Brahem: Anouar Brahem: Innovative Weaver of Musical Heritages

Context:

Tunisian oud player Anouar Brahem’s eighth solo release, Voyage de Sahar (ECM, 2006), is another testimony to the magnificent way that he manages to weave influences and references from the rich and beautiful heritage of Arabic world with elements of Andalusian music and modern jazz, and to the innovative way in which Brahem suggests the oud as a leading instrument in Western and Arabic music. For the first time in his 15-year relationship with the prestigious German ECM label, Brahem recorded with the same musicians who recorded his last release for label, Le Pas du Chat Noir (ECM, 2002)—French pianist Francois Couturier and accordionist Jean-Louis Matinier. Brahem was interviewed by phone from his home in Tunisia.

  New White Willow = Trip-rock Excellence !

A new website for Norwegian art-rockers WHITE WILLOW

White Willow's fifth studio album, "Signal to Noise", will be released by The Laser's Edge on the 23rd of August this year. The album was recorded at Jailhouse Studios in Denmark, and was mixed and produced by legendary producer Tommy Hansen (Helloween, TNT, Pagan's Mind, Saybia). Cover art is by Killustrations, who also did the "Storm Season" cover. The line-up features Trude Eidtang (vocals), Lars Fredrik Frøislie (keyboards, electronics), Jacob Holm-Lupo (guitars), Ketil Vestrum Einarsen (woodwinds), Marthe Berger Walthinsen (bass guitar) and Aage Moltke Schou (drums, percussion). Brynjar Dambo, who played keyboards on "Sacrament", guests on one track. Track listing is as follows:

Night Surf, Splinters, Ghosts, Joyride, The Lingering, The Dark Road, Chrome Dawn, Dusk City, Ararat

The album was recorded in three weeks, in contrast to their usual one-year-of-recording policy. This is reflected in a leaner, more band-oriented sound, and more focused songwriting. The band foregoes some of the hard rock elements of the previous record, while still retaining the force and intensity typical of the band's current incarnation, and blending their distinct symphonic arrangements with a contemporary, direct attitude. And there's still plenty of mellotron!

Listen to a new White Willow track Dusk City on myspace: White Willow

or download as an mp3 at White Willow

These Norwegian's have done it again ! White Willow have a new female singer, Trude Eidtang. A change of singer, and a new trip-rock style.

art-rock / trip rock excellence - a trippy, dreamy track Dusk City is sensational. versatile expressive vocal performance from the soft to forceful, complex textured arrangements, a stunning crystal clear production, glacial electronic-rock epic soundscapes.

The closest reference point is the 1998 legendary trip-rock landmark album by The Gathering How to Measure a Planet

or Paatos on their second album: Kallocain.

Amit

Commercial Suicide release a new album from drum n bass artist Amit Amit - Never Ending - on June 12th, delayed from May 29th. [Teebee fans would appreciate Amit]

London's Timeout review Amit - Never Ending

godbrain.ch: provide info Amit - Never Ending

Amit, the rising half speed drum'n'bass phenomenon, has finally delivered his first album ‘Never Ending’.

‘Never Ending’ is a whole new dimension for drum'n'bass, stretching the sound to create a uniquely different vibe altogether. Those that think drum'n'bass has said all that it can say should give ‘Never Ending’ all their attention.

Rich with Indian flavours, Amit Komboj reaches all kinds of different influences ranging from dub, techno, rave, traditional Indian music, Joy Division and Arabia. His special sounds concoct an aural smokiness – perfect for clubs and home listening.

Amit has been well known within the drum'n'bass scene for the last couple of years with releases on Commercial Suicide, Metalheadz, Function, and Bingo. He has also worked alongside Bill Laswell, adding his sound to the legendary master's productions.

If you ’re looking for an album to take you on a journey far across your emotions then look no further, there's enough here to kick off a party and at the same time it can be listened to as you drift off into a deep slumber.

Multi levelled music for multi levelled minds.

Will this great group ever play together again?" - Russell Goff, Liverpool

Fred says: "Good news. We asked a Van der Graaf spokesman, who revealed, 'VdGG are continuing - they're reconvening [in July] with the intention of future live dates and recording.' He added that a live CD from the Royal Festival Hall show of May 6 2005 is being readied for release, as is a live DVD, possibly from a performance in Germany. Release dates to be confirmed!"

  Futuresonic 2006

Info on the Manchester based, electronic music and media arts festival: Futuresonic 2006

Futuresonic 2006
20-23 July, Manchester

Futuresonic, the electronic music and media arts festival, this year celebrates ten years at the forefront of its field.

The 2006 festival takes place over three days traversing music and the arts, involving multiple and often unusual spaces. It takes in headline gigs, breaks musical acts, maps the city, premieres ground breaking technologies, ships in some of the world's most innovative artists and musicians, and gives Manchester a weekend-long urban experience not to forget...

Futuresonic Live is all about the music. It's headlined by the undisputed cover star of minimalism, Christian Fennesz; supported by Warp Records' new supergroup, the amazing Battles; Japanese wunderkind, Toshio Iwai; the scuzzy electro-punk euphoria of Berlin's female duo Cobra Killer; all the leading lights of the nascent dubstep scene combined in one killer showcase, Digital Mystikz, Skream, Kode 9, Plastician; the hottest act around right now, mysterious grime-folk agitators Various Production; and much, much more. Think new music is all about boys and laptops? Think again.

Artist profiles: Futuresonic Live

Other elements of the festival include:

Collaborative Cultures

In 2006 Futuresonic explores the theme of Collaborative Cultures, looking at collaborative cultures and independence movements in art and culture. It was selected as the theme for Futuresonic's 10th anniversary year because it has been a constant interest over the past decade. For this same reason, it is unsurprisingly hard to pin down to just a few artworks. As a result the annual theme takes a different shape this year. Instead of a one-off exhibition or event, it has led to the formation of a new conference strand we hope to be a regular feature of the festival, the Social Technologies Summit. Plus it appears as a thread running through the many different components of the 2006 festival.

Bloglines / Ask Blogs & Feeds Search

Ask.com / Bloglines have launched a new Blogs & Feeds search engine.

TechCrunch has the info: Finally! Bloglines Blog Search

Ask.com, which owns the most popular stand alone web based feed reader, Bloglines, has just rolled out its long awaited new blog search engine.

Further insights:

SearchEngineWatch: Ask Debuts Blog & Feed Search

Read/WriteWeb: New Ask.com blog search and Bloglines upgrade (but no new UI)

Ask.com claims that its blog search will yield superior results, due to that by now familiar 2.0 term "collective human intelligence". They state:

"Instead of crawling, Ask Blog & Feed Search harnesses the subscription data of hundreds of thousands of real people who use Bloglines, the #1 online feed reader, to create our search index. In the absence of a mature link structure, people provide the best way to discover the freshest, highest quality feeds -- information that isn’t exposed to crawlers. In addition, this “collective human intelligence” provides a natural defense against spam, as people typically do not subscribe to low quality content."

Search Interfaces:

Bloglines | Search

Bloglines | Advanced Search [I am impressed with the User Interface and how fast content is indexed]

Alternative Search Interface:

Ask.com and [Select the Orange RSS Feed Button on the right menu]

This interface includes a save to del.icio.us option.
