Idolator's 2006 Jackin' Pop Critics Poll

Replacement for Pazz & Jop: Time To Raze The Village: Announcing Idolator's 2006 Jackin' Pop Critics Poll - Idolator - Michaelangelo Matos is managing the poll.

Which is why we're proud to announce the Idolator Jackin' Pop Critics Poll. Edited by Michaelangelo Matos--a Seattle-based music critic and author of the 33 1/3 book Sign O' The Times--Jackin' Pop will maintain the Voice's thoughtfully anarchic approach to music criticism, merging it with the technological reach of Gawker Media. In the coming week, more than 1,200 critics, writers and editors will be sent ballots, and results will be announced Sunday, Dec. 31st.

THE 3rd QWARTZ ELECTRONIC MUSIC AWARDS

open to vote: Qwartz: THE 3rd QWARTZ ELECTRONIC MUSIC AWARDS:

The international exposition of independent musical creation 2006/2007 has opened its doors with the collection of the 300 works selected for the 3rd Qwartz Electronic Music Awards. These will be submitted to the public for voting up to 15 February 2007. The works are presented so as to lead visitors through the whole range of new music and express their preferences in 8 of the categories that are eligible for an award: Track, Album, Discovery, Experimental, Dance Floor, Compilation, Video Clip, Artwork and Packaging.

A broad spectrum that presents in clear perspective the music's various forms and nuances, with a single criterion in mind: the quality and originality of the composition or interpretation. The aim of this exposition is to offer the public the opportunity to see, hear, understand and enjoy contemporary electronic and digital music.

"A new CD from the timeless Norwegians, whose music is sometimes reminiscent - but not imitative - of National Health or Miriodor - and similar bands of that era: melodic, with a light but solid ensemble sound, rich, detailed, nuanced and with a style that is still their own. Mostly instrumental, though Richard Sinclair appears on track 7. They have come a long way since their last release. For everyone who likes that English type of 70's progressive rock and its more interesting extensions."

Prince Valium

debut Prince Valium album: prince valium - andlaus [via Boomkat]

"One half of Icelandic electronica duo Sk/um, Thorsteinn Olafsson has given his sound an epic makeover for this his solo debut on Resonant. The skittering micro beats and gentle, filtered melodies of old are still very much present, but on Andlaus they’re less central. Here the focus is the kind of echoic electric guitar-based post-rock that you’d expect from Morr Music’s Manual or Olafsson’s Resonant labelmate, Stafraenn Hakon. ‘Crying Hearts’ comes closest to a concise pop song, but it’s most notable for inviting national stereotyping: with – and it pains me to make such lazy comparisons (though apparently not enough to stop myself) – majestic bowed guitar lifted straight off the first Sigur Ros album, and a vocal that (here I go again…) inevitably sounds a bit like Björk. As the album progresses, Olafsson delves deeper into his shoegazing electronica repertoire to create an atmospheric body of work which evocatively, if utterly predictably, reflects the vast, icy topography of his homeland. Lovely."

  Music Links Roundup - Update

some links of interest: [an artists news update will happen at the weekend]

the growing influence of internet media on music consumption: Site seers | Pop | Guardian Unlimited Music

They started as hobby businesses that ran on charity and spare time. Now the top music websites can make or break a band overnight. Jude Rogers on the Pitchfork effect

also Stylus and DrownedinSound mentioned.

IMHO Stylus & Pitchfork can react faster than the NME because they have more freedom and are not pandering to the lowest common denominator core teenager audience of the 00s NME.

you can only laugh at the ignorance and stupidity of NME's Krissi Murison:

Murison also thinks websites give mixed messages. "They can be really confusing, and there's no quality control. If you're trying to work out what's good, the NME's already done the job for you. We're a filter for everyone.

she reckons the NME filters for everyone !!!!!!!!!! and websites can be confusing - they are opinions and options that need to be evaluated you stoopid women. Murison also implies that the NME has wait for it... quality control !

NME forces 10-12 key artists on it's young readership each year, ignoring many artists through lack of knowledge and understanding of the diversity of music available, it's music focus is primarily dictated at an editorial strategy level.

[I don't see the coverage or any authority in NME of numerous music styles: experimental electronic music, avant jazz, extreme metal, avant prog, ambient, post-rock, dubstep, electro / house / techno, psychedelic rock etc]

full context:

Surely the NME should feel threatened by Pitchfork's power if it can cover who it wants to? Krissi Murison, acting deputy editor of the NME, isn't convinced. "Pitchfork's success is just another indicator of how people are devouring music everywhere, in print, on radio, and online. There's a revived passion for new music. We sometimes cover 60 new bands every week in our Radar section, just like the websites do. And people trust us talking about them more because we've got a heritage." Murison also thinks websites give mixed messages. "They can be really confusing, and there's no quality control. If you're trying to work out what's good, the NME's already done the job for you. We're a filter for everyone."

Some links of interest:

BBC 6 Music celebrate Synth Pop with a themed week: Back to the Future

BBC - 6 Music - Events: Back to the Future - week of 27th November - December 1st

Why are we doing 'Back To The Future'?
It was 25 years ago that bands such as The Human League, Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, OMD and Ultravox broke through and changed the face of the musical mainstream forever.

The way had already been shown by Gary Numan and Tubeway Army, but it wasn’t till '81 that the sound really took off in the mainstream. It was the dawning of 'synth pop' and popular music has never looked back since!

The influence of this time in particular is still felt across pop music today. Albums such as The Human Leagues 'Dare', Depeche Modes 'Speak And Spell' and Kraftwerks 'Computer World'' have been hugely influential and are still cited by many of todays bands and producers as being of huge importance.

It's the 25th anniversary since the arrival of these key albums so it’s a great time to celebrate them and their influence.

Lindstrøm

Dusted Features [ Listed: Lindstrøm + Hisato Higuchi ] - the current listening of Lindstrøm

Norwegian producer Hans-Peter Lindstrøm has recently released It's A Feedelity Affair, a collection of singles and one-offs quietly released over the past few years. It's not his first record, nor is it his most widely released (that's probably last year's masterpiece, a collaboration with Prins Thomas). Few modern dance artists are as versatile, and are as able to combine seriousness with lightheartedness quite as well and as consistently as Lindstrøm. Perhaps this versatility is a result of not being fundamentally rooted in dance music, as his "Listed" contribution demonstrates.

  Uncut and Mojo New Issues

New issue of Uncut magazine unfortunately features Bob Dylan again. Why are Uncut copying the typography of Rolling Stone magazine?

Our free Playlist CD has tracks from Arctic Monkeys, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Drive-by Truckers, Sufjan Stevens, Midlake, Band of Horses, Hot Chip and The Flaming Lips.

The new issue of Mojo magazine is even duller, The Who are on the front again. Mojo is going through a right boring phase recently. Leave this issue on the newsstand !

Uncut's 50 Best of 2006 - via Sound Opinions Message Board

Uncut magazine haven't learnt any lessons from last year's ridiculously early publishing of end of year lists. They have done it again.

* premature and unwanted, no one wants end of year polls to be published during the first week of November.

* lacking depth of focus, 50 selections is just not enough. does anyone care about the results ? even if burial, scott walker, tv on the radio, mastodon, midlake and espers are included.

* magazines have forgotten how to do end of year analysis. It was so much better when opinion, analysis and informed comment where the order of the day. Melody Maker circa 1987 and 1988 are the benchmarks.
