Elephant9
introducing Elephant9..that features Mr Storløkken from Supersilent...Elephant9 - expect a new album on Rune Grammofon in May
The trio Elephant9 was originally named Storløkken/Eilertsen/Lofthus, the surnames of the three members. Now the trio is ready for the Øya Festival, and anyone who loves jazz rock should start looking forward to their performance. The album ‘DoDoVoodoo’ will be out in May, and on it you’ll find obvious traces of rock, prog, jazz, psychedelia, and fusion. Elephant9 is an energetic live act whose appeal reaches far beyond the jazz audience. The lucky few who’ve seen the band play live, points to Weather Report and Miles Davis as references. The band’s strong points are their musical interaction, striking precision, and obvious love of playing.

press release [via email]
After the uncertainty and eventual dissolution (maybe) of his former band, L'Altra, Joseph Costa picks up the pieces as Costa Music with the release of his first solo album, Lighter Subjects.
Lighter Subjects is a seamless fusion of electronic, folk and chamber elements. While the album is rich with multi-layered acoustics and complex electronic arrangements, its subject matter remains explicitly clear: life, love, loss and letting go. But just as these seemingly simple concepts are often the most misunderstood, Costa's album contradicts the levity of its title. Lighter Subjects is a melodic blend of deeply personal lyrics and intricately woven instrumentals. The hypnotic soundscapes, weaving melodies and tangled beats are the house within which Costa sings of snow, sinking ships, broken furniture and broken hearts.
Costa enlisted the writing partnership and production skills of Marc Hellner (Pulseprogramming), the mixing chops of Joshua Eustis (Telefon Tel Aviv) and an array of other collaborators including avant cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm (Terminal 4, Flying Luttenbachers), Kevin Duneman (The Race), and up-and-coming vocalist Aleksandra Tomaszweska (Aleks and the Drummer).
Previously, Costa has released albums with L'Altra for Aesthetics Records and Hefty Records, and has performed throughout Europe, North and South America and Japan. His work also includes a prior Hellner collaboration, in which the two composed the score of the feature film, PLAY, which claimed Best Picture honors at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2005.
Costa Music's much-anticipated debut album follows its introduction to audiences -- coupled with a month-long tour -- in Japan last (MONTH). Lighter Subjects is being released by Stilll Records in North America and Europe, and by Is Collage Collective in Japan.

alerted via itsatrap, Swedish band pacific! are streaming all tracks from their new album Reveries [released this week]: MySpace.com - pacific! - Gothenburg - Electro / Surf - www.myspace.com/musicpacific
an unusual mixture of styles, some tracks have hushed Beach Boys style vocals over an arty euro-electronic-pop backdrop. I can see this album doing rather well if word-of-mouth buzz is generated across the internet. The tracks benefit from a nice flowing bouncy and pulsating crystal clear production.

by:larm in Oslo - More Reports
by:larm happened in Oslo between February 21st - 23rd. Norway's answer to SWXSW.
It was the first time by:larm was held in Oslo, it was the biggest by:larm in terms of artists performing and visiting delegates / journalists etc.
another report from Adrien Begrand @ by:larm in Oslo: Superfamily proved too OTT for Adrien: Sure, it’s fun and all, but dude…male dancers? - PopMatters | Blogs | Notes from the Road
But to Super Family and their obviously strong cadre of followers, they couldn’t care less. It’s goofy, but it’s theirs, a perfect encapsulation of the likeable insularity of this part of the world, and to hell with the rest of the world if they don’t get it. In all honesty, you couldn’t ask for a more fitting end to easily the most well-run, enjoyable musical event yours truly has ever seen.
Nancy Baym provides feedback via Festival report: by:Larm 2008 | ARTICLE | IT'S A TRAP! Scandinavian Music Journal
Final analysis: Well planned, well organized, well run, and wonderful festival. If the best band is to be judged by who leaves you happily humming their songs and ready to buy their complete collection, the festival belongs to Miss Li, someone I'd never given a second thought beforehand and could easily have missed entirely (thank goodness my friend who'd seen her told me otherwise!). Oslo's a great city. 23 bands in 3 nights and only a few of them disappointing. It's one of the best weekends of my life.

Every once in a while there comes a band who takes a completely new approach to metal, boasting a sound so unique that to restrict it to genre classifications would be almost insulting. Bands like Opeth, Cynic, or Meshuggah are classic examples, having achieved a near-legendary status in the metal world by putting their own unique spin on the music of their peers.
It may be too early to judge, but Australia’s Ne Obliviscaris seem destined to become one such band.

Preston Swirnoff
MySpace.com - preston swirnoff - San Diego, California - - www.myspace.com/prestonswirnoff - new 2008 album:
Maariv is a collection of electroacoustic solo works composed and produced by San Diego-based musician Preston Swirnoff. This collection was recorded at his studio, The Habitat, in 2004-2005. Swirnoff also collaborates with Ilya Monosov in primal rock unit The Shining Path and as Monosov Swirnoff, as well as producing heavy analog dub music as Habitat Sound System.
Taking 20th century minimalism, ritual drone music, and early electronic and tape experiments as launching points, Swirnoff uses a variety of instruments (piano, tone generators, organs, guitar, tape machines) to create absorbing sound worlds that thrive on repetition, melody, noise, and a sense of the otherworldly.
Swirnoff has cited Gyorgy Ligeti, La Monte Young, the SF Tape Music Center of the 60's, the haunting solo work of Angus MacLise, and old Jewish liturgical melodies as inspirations that inform the four pieces on Maariv. Each piece, though based on a simple premise and instrument setup, weaves a complex aural tapestry rich in both texture and emotion.

mick mercer - proposed new book
mick mercer is working on a new music reference book:
scope:
I am doing a new book on Goth, this time concentrating solely on bands, in the Goth genre itself, and in overlapping scenes of Deathrock, Punk Noire, Post-Punk, Ethereal, Heavenly Voices, Faery, Ambient, Dark electronics/folk/country, Atmospheric Industrial, Neo-classical, Horror Rock, Gothabilly and all the rest. (I am not interested in Neo-folk, club-style electronics/electro, Art-Noise which I see as Indie, or mainstream Industrial which is decorated Rock.)
I am going through all the lists I have assembled to send out info requests but if you see this first and beat me to it then hurrah! Also, for any new bands I may not be aware of you, but once you see this please join in. If you are not in a band but wish to recommend some likely urls please feel free
"The book will be out in the Summer of this year" ! - this seems a rather ambitious deadline.

New Skyphone Album Avellaneda
New Skyphone album on Rune Grammofon: Rune Grammofon RCD 2071 - Skyphone: Avellaneda
Skyphone belong to a new generation of Danish musicians that also include bands like Under Byen and Efterklang. Musically it´s possible to place them somewhere between Efterklang, Sigur Ros and Swedish group Tape. In the Rune Grammofon catalogue Skyphone is probably closest in spirit and musical ideology to Svalastog and the more melodic sides of Alog. With ”Avellaneda” they have further developed the ideas of their acclaimed ”Fabula” debut into a seamless blend of acoustic and electronic elements, rich in detail and sonic refinement, with the occasional touch of Scandinavian folk music providing a strong melodic base.
