  Jazzwise - New Issue

Polar Bear are on the front cover of the new issue of Jazzwise magazine.

interview: Polar Bear - Kicking The Senses

Polar Bear has been in the vanguard of the new wave of UK jazz groups to emerge over the past five years. Led by drummer Seb Rochford, the band appeals to both jazz and rock audiences but became known to a still wider audience when its second album Held On The Tips Of Fingers was Mercury nominated. Switching labels, from Babel Records to V2, for its latest album, as yet untitled, Andy Robson catches up with the band members on the eve of the album’s launch.

ULVER: New Track: Vigil on Myspace

BLABBERMOUTH.NET - ULVER: New Song Posted Online

A brand new ULVER track, entitled "Vigil", has been made available for streaming on the band's MySpace page.

Listen: MySpace.com - ULVER - - Experimental / Rock / Ambient - www.myspace.com/ulver1

Very atmospheric almost contemporary classical / modern composition at times with the piano and strings, as per the previous press release there are references to Fennesz in the sonic droning and dissonance. The track also reminds me a bit of Supersilent, David Sylvian, David Torn, Faultline, circa Closer Colder and Max Richter

The vocal style of Garm is close to some Ulver circa Perdition City album but almost choral elements are added at times.

An outstanding artistic track - but that's what you expect from the ever brilliant Ulver.

An article that attempts to defend Xfm from a business perspective over the past 10 years. Absolutely nothing is mentioned about the protests after the Capital Group takeover of Xfm in August 1998.

[A more accurate early history of Xfm is portrayed here: Xfm - Media UK]

The spineless and gutless Radio Authority were utterly useless and let the then Capital Group get away with blatant cultural destruction.

In 2007, Xfm has a narrow playlist which is abysmal and introduced a No-DJ system during the daytime 10am-4pm, replaced by more of the same overplayed awful NME / Q promoted music.

The article doesn't mention the unfair axing of Nick Luscombe's Flo-Motion show last December.

The journalist can't even get the name of DJ right, it's Ian Camfield.

Avant-progressive rock is a style of art music based on rock music that explores unconventional territory, often incorporating non-standard chord progressions, tempo changes within a piece, odd time signatures, avant garde passages and complex horn and orchestral arrangements. It generally relates to experimental bands and musicians influenced by 20th century avant garde, classical, jazz, folk and other music, and who stretch the boundaries of the rock form in both the compositional and improvisational arenas.

Audited Sales Figures for UK Music Magazines

Q rocked as sales fall | Press&publishing | MediaGuardian.co.uk and Press Gazette - Magazine ABCs: Q still top music title despite major decline and mad.co.uk: Music titles strike sour note [linked via Google News to avoid the mad.co.uk login]

weeklies:

Kerrang consolidates it's lead on the NME:

Kerrang! 83,610 [down 2.1 per cent since the last audit figures of 6 months ago, but up 4.3 per cent year-on-year]

Kerrang blatantly targets the teenage rock / metal audience, unfortunately most of the music that they cover these days is mallcore rubbish.

NME 68,151 [down 6.7 per cent since the last audit figures of 6 months ago] [down 8.2 per cent year on year]

NME will continue to loose readers as it's strategy of appealing to teenagers is restricted to a narrow demographic niche that also prefer social networking websites such as Bebo.

Monthlies:

A massive drop for Q magazine:

Q: 130,179
Q has seen sales tumble from 158,271 copies for the six months to the end of June 2006 to 130,179 by the same time this year. [MediaGuardian] falling 17.1% over the last 12 months.

I have never understood how Q magazine sells so many copies, but it's good to see a considerable drop in it's sales.

Mainstream rock/pop in 2006 and 2007 has seen a dearth in quality as discussed on ILM with many agreeing that 2006 was the worst year for mainstream music in the UK in the past 3 decades. As Q magazine is an overtly mainstream music magazine this could explain it's significant circulation drop.

I define "mainstream music" in the UK, as music that receives radio play in the daytime / evening on Radio 1, Radio 2, 6 Music, BBC local radio, Virgin, Xfm, Kiss and other Commercial Local Radio stations.

Mojo continues it's lead over Uncut:

Mojo 112,037 down 1.9 per cent year-on-year
Uncut 85,884 down 8.3 per cent year-on-year

Many people have expressed their disgust of Uncut for constantly featuring the same 1960s/70s rock artists.

Uncut needs to change it's editorial strategy, more diversity in the music it covers e.g more experimental, electronic, extreme metal, ambient, jazz, progressive rock, minimal techno, dubstep etc

i.e Uncut needs to incorporate some of the territory of music covered by magazines such as The Wire, Terrorizer, Jazzwise, Rock-A-Rolla.

more analysis and analytical overviews, a sharper focus on contemporary music i.e highlighting the very best new releases and introducing double reviews for some releases, and featuring artists on it's front cover that go beyond the same few old boring rock types from the 60s/70s.

Uncut suffers from a dull consumer review approach, it needs to inject it's own agenda, personality and be more opinionated.

Word 34,816 up 3.6 per cent
Classic Rock 67,241 up 20% year-on-year

Rock / Metal Monthlies

Metal Hammer 49,143 up 0.3 per cent
Rock Sound 23,260 up 1 per cent

  Terrorizer - New Issue

New issue of Terrorizer magazine features a themed issue "The Return of Prog" - that will extend over three issues.

The dedicated musicianship, thematic density and boundary-busting drive of extreme metal all have their roots in this most understood of genres: an ever-present undercurrent and inexhaustible resource that spans the vast majority of extreme subgenres from thrash to death and black metal and also our most contemporary pioneers. Voivod, Death, Emperor, Enslaved, Mesuggah and Mastodon are just some of the bands who have drawn from this well and the impulse to skirt the edges of reason is one we all understand instinctively. Over the next three issues we’ll be delving in to the many worlds of progressive rock as we look in depth at its many bridges to the metal (and hardcore) world, talk to the legendary band most responsible for those bridges, our cover stars Rush, and much more besides, including reams of first-person accounts from the heady early days.

On sale this Thursday.

Warp Records announce new Prefuse 73 album and Flying Lotus Ep

Warp News: August

We can reveal that Prefuse 73 is back with a new album set to drop late October. Preparations will give fans a subtle taste of every Prefuse record that has come before, whilst still exploring and pushing these trademark sounds further for 2007.

The first single from Preparations features a collaboration with New York wall-of-psych band School Of Seven Bells and Battles drummer John Stanier. Class of 73 Bells swirls with undeniable pop melodies grounded by Prefuse's stereo-rattling low-end while Smoking Red takes Stanier's punishing drums and uses them to carve out a fierce hip-hop banger.

Flying Lotus

We are proud to exclusively reveal the tracklisting and release date for LA based producer Flying Lotus' debut EP on Warp Records. Reset will be released as a 12inch, CD and Digital Download on October 1st 2007 featuring the following tracklisting:

1. Tea Leaf Dancers
2. Vegas Collie
3. Massage Situation
4. Spicy Sammich
5. Bonus Beat
6. Dance Floor Stalker

Øya festival

Oslo's Øya festival starts tomorrow and runs till Saturday: Øya festivalen - I wonder if anyone will be blogging this festival with daily updates? Stereogum did last year and Pitchfork have also attended Oya the past 2 years.

Update, music blog brooklynvegan will be there ! brooklynvegan: I'm not @ Lollapalooza, but I am going to Øya

Artists appearing at Oyafestivalen this year. This festival is far superior and more diverse than the major British music festivals.

Drowned in Sound - Features - Øya Festival, Oslo: the DiS preview

Deep into the bloated innards of the festival season and DiS is headed in a north easterly direction to Norway – again – this time for the arrestingly-titled Øya Festival in Oslo.

The five-day event, which is expected to draw around 60,000 revellers, takes place from August 7-12 in the grand old setting of Oslo’s Medieval Park, in a site surrounded by water with three open-air stages

MIC Norway provides a preview overview: MIC Norway: Øya 07:

The most zeitgeisty and defining magazines and web sites always make a Øya a priority, as do promoters, bookers management people and musical scouts from across the line. Suffice it to mention Dazed and Confused, Die Zeit, Intro magazine, Mojo, Pitchforkmedia, The Wire, Süddeutsche Zeitung, ZDF TV. The importance of the festival for the promotion of Norwegian music simply cannot be underestimated.
