Deeply soulful electro-RnB, unconventional in it's way of expressing pop and electronics *****
K7 (K7228CD)
August 25th, 2008

DOTSHOP FAVOURITE. RECOMMENDED **** Introspective, sensual electro-folk steeped in weightless melancholy: The third Milosh album ‘iii’ takes the listener on an emotional journey through an exquisitely beautiful musical landscape.

A classically trained cellist, Toronto-based Michael Milosh does not fit conventional pop categories - and neither does his music which combines beats, samples, guitars, strings and the most silken falsetto voice.

Signed to the renowned Plug Research label (John Tejada, Flying Lotus etc), Milosh's previous two albums made it into the Top 10 Electronic Music albums on iTunes and earned warm reviews that likened his different musical shadings to Radiohead, Cocteau Twins, and Brian Eno. During the past years, Milosh shared the stage with artists like Imogen Heap (a big supporter of his music), Flying Lotus, Daedelus, Dntel, Psapp and others.

The tracks on ‘iii’ combine the best of both Milosh’s cerebral electronica and soulful singer-songwriter sides, stirring deep emotions with lush arrangements, honeyed vocals and delicately deconstructed beats. Mixed and mastered by Josh Eustis from Telefon Tel Aviv (who also mixed Apparat´s last record), it's his richest album yet. Music to nourish the mind, stimulate the body and soothe the spirit.

Finnish atmospheric doom metallers SILENTIUM have issued the following update:

"After a while of silence, the band has retired to a studio in central Finland. At this point the drums, the bass and most of the guitars [for the next SILENTIUM album] have been recorded. Some of the vocals have been recorded as well, although Riina [Rinkinen; female vocals] and Matti [Aikio; bass, vocals] are due to return to the studio in July. The band has some major surprises reserved for their loyal fans, who have been more than patient in the wait for the new album. All the Silentians agree that the new material is the most impressive up to date! Prepare yourselves for a massive music experience. This fall, SILENTIUM will be back, more powerful than ever!"

SILENTIUM's new album, which is scheduled for release on October 29, is being produced by the multi-talented mainman of WALTARI, Kärtsy Hatakka.

New Morgan Geist Album: Double Night Time

Morgan Geist returns with a new album !

Due September 18th: DOTSHOP.SE - Morgan Geist: Double Night Time

Environ (ENVCD007)
September 15th, 2008

MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. FEATURING JEREMY GREENSPAN OF JUNIOR BOYS ON VOCALS *****

"Double Night Time" is the new album from Morgan Geist and his first solo artist album in over a decade. released on his own Environ imprint - home to loveables such as Kelley Polar.

After turning the dance music world on its head with his Metro Area project (alongside collaborator Darshan Jesrani) and mining rare disco gems with the seminal obscure disco DJ mix Unclassics (2004), Geist decided it was time to turn his attention to a solo album that would indulge his own early influences and guilty pleasures: techno-pop, prog rock and pure electronic music.

While "Double Night Time" is very much a solo flight, made during a challenging period in which dark personal themes inflected the compositions, Geist collaborated with friend and fellow new wave traveler Jeremy Greenspan for the vocal tracks on the album. An ardent fan of Jeremy’s band Junior Boys, Geist knew the vocalist would be perfect as a sympathetic collaborator; indeed, having remixed Junior Boys “The Equalizer” in 2006, he already knew what it was like working with Greenspan’s voice in the studio. Greenspan also co-wrote one of the tracks on the album, “City of Smoke and Flame.”

Instrumentally, the orchestra Geist employs is decidedly more Yellow Magic than philharmonic: unlike his Metro Area project or the disco music he DJs all over the world, a conscious decision was made to design an album that was almost purely electronic outside of human vocals, with classic synthetic sound design and arrangements. Geist wanted Double Night Time to be the sound of one person making music in a studio, programming a private world, recapturing the lonely and romantic sentiments associated with his formative music-making experiences. And while the conceit of a producer-as-one-man-band is well-worn in today’s digital world, Geist felt he could do it differently, aiming for the compositional richness, subtlety and dynamics of an era when artists took their time, had bigger studio budgets and a more attentive listening public.

Spork

2008 album: Many Of Them Seriously by Spork @ Cargo Records

drummer ed lush and bass player matt chilton formed spork after discovering they were both in fact closet guitarists with a liking for atmospheric space rock.

neither of them sing but there’s nothing missing here amongst the venus-bound guitars, glacial rhythms and echoes of early ‘70’s tangerine dream. what’s more the music was recorded without the help of loops or computer editing - for the listener this means all the invisible threads are still intact. spork have effectively created their own kind of man-made machine music. live the line-up is extended to a five-piece band with projected visuals playing a key role. recently they performed a rousing live soundtrack to new russian film ‘a sister’s kiss’ as part of the east end film festival - as a result they have been asked to repeat the performance at the big chill later this summer. this album also marks the first in a new series of releases from scratchy records including a new album from lo-fi acoustic singer-songwriter bromide (produced by ed and matt spork) and the debut later in the year from troubadour songster matthew neel.

Twenty one year old Icelandic musician Ólafur Arnalds first appeared last year with his debut album, Eulogy For Evolution, released in the UK on the excellent Erased Tapes imprint, and instantly gathered some impressive critical praises for his widescreen contemporary classical music tinted with discreet electronics and hints of indie. Earlier this year, Arnalds returned with a more minimal EP, Variations Of Static, on which he let electronics texture his work more prominently. With an opening slot for Sigur Rós during the summer and a major tour already in full swing, Ólafur took a few moments to talk about his musical background, the elitism in modern classical music and the challenges of taking the genre to a young audience, and being the next big thing to come out of Iceland

Swedish Jazz musician Esbjörn Svensson has died

tragic news: BBC NEWS | World | Europe | Jazz champion Svensson dies at 44

The Swedish jazz pianist and composer Esbjorn Svensson has died in a scuba diving accident near the Swedish capital Stockholm. He was 44.

The Guardian: Jazz pianist Esbjörn Svensson killed in scuba accident | News | guardian.co.uk Music

According to the Guardian's jazz critic John Fordham, Svensson was a rare phenomenon in the jazz world: "A hero to the hardline critics, and a bankable international star."

A string of 13 albums won critical acclaim and commercial success for his blend of contemporary jazz crossed with rock, pop and electronica.

Esbjörn Svensson was a long term favourite of BBC's Jazz on 3 radio programme. I would expect a significant tribute mention on Friday's show.

Esbjörn Svensson was one of the most significant European jazz musicians of his generation. There have been many tributes in the global blogopshere: Esbjörn Svensson

biography: Esbjörn Svensson

music: MySpace.com - e.s.t. - SE - www.myspace.com/esbjornsvenssontrio

e.s.t. is a phenomenon: A jazz trio, which sees itself as a pop band that plays jazz, which broke with the tradition of leader and sidemen in favour of equality within its members, which not only plays jazz-venues but also venues usually reserved for rock bands, which uses light effects and fog-machines in their live shows, which gets a whole audience to sing-a-long with jazz-standards as eg. Thelonious Monk's Bemsha Swing, is a trio that goes beyond the scope of the usual classic jazz trio. Their music can be found in the pop-charts and their videos are playing on MTV Scandinavia. With their unique sound scape, combining jazz with drum 'n' bass, electronic elements, funk rhythm, and pop and rock as well as European Classical music, e.s.t. won an audience spanning from the classic jazz-fans to the youngest Hip Hop fans. Critics and audiences world-wide agree: e.s.t. is definitely one of the most innovative jazz bands of today.

Lite

new 2008 album: Transduction Records — LITE - Phantasia

The second full-length from the Japanese instrumentalists is darker and more varied that its predecessor and runs the gamut from Crimson-esque jazz-rock to full-scale guitar assault. With “Phantasia”, LITE is set to cement its reputation as one of the most exciting bands to have emerged from Japan in recent years.

new 2008 album: DOTSHOP.SE - Odd Nosdam: Pretty Swell Explode on Anticon

The Search

new 2008 album: RED SUN RECORDS: The Search - Saturnine Songs

Saturnine Songs is the 4th album of Swedish band nu-wave band The Search. Ever since their debut album The Search wrap their catchy pop melodies into a gloomy cloak, creating escaping the daily grey routines. When the press is talking about The Search, they speak of a beautiful retro-mix of wave and rock in the vein of The Cure and Joy Division. The band does not deny their roots, but take pleasure in paraphrasing them in their own slightly deranged and atmospheric way. In order to achieve a wider musical range on their 4th album, Saturnine Songs, they hooked up two different producers. Kristofer Jönson from the band Jeniferever was hired to conjure up the melancholic, darker part of the album with songs like Yes-Man and Swimmer and Elof Loelv, producer and musician, was engaged to invoke the electronical parts in songs like Distant and Other People, where he created a catchy, yet dreamy sound. The album is mastered at Studio Tonteknik by Magnus Lindberg, a well-known mastering engineer.

Red Sun Records offers a free promo CD-single with the first orders of this album. Stock is very limited!

Influences / Similar Artists:
The Cure, Sad Lovers & Giants, The Essence, The Chameleons, The Cure

Travis & Fripp

new 2008 album: travis and fripp - thread

Recorded at DGM Soundworld by David Singleton, with subsequent editing, mixing and mastering by Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree/No-Man), Thread comprises nine improvised pieces by Theo Travis (alto flute, soprano sax) and Robert Fripp (guitar, soundscapes).

This unique and almost inevitable collaboration has yielded a beautiful sequence of recordings that artfully avoids the clichés routinely associated with “ambient” and “improv”, while wholly encompassing the core elements of both forms of music.

The strength of the duo as players and listeners never allows the improvisational base to sound insular or indulgent; the overall sound is expansive and accessible, with the passion and commitment of the players audible from the first moments.

Unfashionably, perhaps, in an era where music is often portrayed as ephemeral or disposable, it is an album that rewards repeated listening, revealing new depths with each play.

A free track from the album (now titled 'Land Beyond The Forest' is available

Custom charts @ Rate Your Music - Demonstrated: What are the top rated albums of the 00s?

rateyourmusic.com have just introduced customized charts: Custom chart - Rate Your Music

if your a user of rateyourmusic.com these custom charts are fascinating, e.g I have a private network of friends on rateyourmusic.com of circa 200 people. Using this user base that I have built up over the past few years I can now churn out charts that should be more relevant and interesting compared to the whole user base on rateyourmusic.com.

by selecting "as rated by friends" option you can get yearly charts, decade charts and alltime charts for albums, and eps, singles and compilations.

e.g I can get a list of the Top 1000 albums of the 00s "as rated by friends", below are the top 100 albums of the 00s so far as rated by my friends & favourites network on rateyourmusic.com.

Using this customized user base gives a more accurate snapshot of the decade so far, as it overcomes problems of rating the end of the decade more than the beginning that is common in one off polls.
