Ryan Teague Interview
Musique Machine interview Ryan Teague
Cambridge based Ryan Teague is part of new wave of young contemporary composers who are breathing new life into UK electro-acoustic and experimental music. Teague has with his debut record Six preludes, displayed a harmonic and soulful approach that is far removed from the clinical styles of Stockhausen and Xenakis or the overt minimalism of Bryars or Reich. His melting pot of influences and his determination to produce music that touches the heart as much as the head has made him one to watch for 2006. Here I find him preparing for the immanent release of his full length album Coins and Crosses, a record that will no doubt propel him to a wider audience.
Latest Ryan Teague news
it’s been 18 months in the making, but the Forthcoming album Coins and Crosses is now officially mixed and finished. We will be travelling to Berlin in June to master the album, and finishing the artwork in the meantime. Release date is set for late September, which will hopefully tie in with some live dates

NUPHILOSOPHY
A SERIES OF DEBATES AND PRESENTATIONS FROM NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY PHILOSOPHERS.
+ MASTERCLASS WORKSHOPS FROM APPLE AND MUCH MUCH MORE..
Festival Philosophy:
The event attempts to straddle the boundary between contemporary art music and the more club orientated sounds of the past 20 years. From Stockhausen to Kraftwerk, Nordheim to Royksopp, Detroit to Drum n Bass, Noise music to Electronica and Field recordings to out and out Techno.
The release schedules of major record labels and artists management companies too often dictate what we will hear, see and enjoy this summer, tired bands on the long festival circuit often playing in bright sunshine to an audience bombarded with advertising and product placement is hardly ideal for the enjoyment of "music". Which is where Numusic step in. All acts are scheduled to play in venues that we feel suit them and their audience the most. Small to medium sized venues from 150-600 with friendly crowds out for The Music!
Although the Nu crew are idealistic, we strive to provide a level of professionalism and service for everyone involved, not just the headliners and Vip’s that larger events focus on. We rely on a dedicated crew of volunteers and service providers who enable the festival to take place.

Cortney Tidwell - Album: Don't Let Stars Keep Us Tangled Up
Coda Agency announce details of a new album by Cortney Tidwell titled: Don't Let Stars Keep Us Tangled Up - Due for release on Ever Records on July 10th.
I am surprised that Cortney Tidwell isn't [already] a buzz artist in the blogosphere / music forums / on rateyourmusic.com, this is probably due to the fact her only release so far, an EP wasn't released in her native US. [Check the hyper praise for Cortney Tidwell mostly by the UK press at the bottom of this blog post.]
[You may remember earlier this year I compared Cortney Tidwell's music to 90s 4ad / guernica artist Insides]
Anyway here is news of her full length debut album:
DON'T LET STARS KEEP US TANGLED UP, the follow up to her self-titled UK-only mini album, will now be released by Ever Records on July 10th 2006, and represents a dramatic leap forward from her acclaimed first release. The new album sees the Nashville artist unhindered by concepts of genre, instead delivering eleven songs that cross stylistic divides but which are united by her extraordinary voice and unfettered ambition. The album was recorded at home and at Nashville's Beat Hollow studios and co-produced by Cortney Tidwell and her husband Todd Tidwell. Guests include members of Lambchop: Kurt Wagner duets on Society, where he is also joined by former founding member Johnathon Marx, whilst William Tyler – Lambchop's guitarist – contributes extensively. Ryan Norris of Nashville's Hands Off Cuba, who has also collaborated with Lambchop on their new album, contributes a variety of performances on a number of tracks, as well as being responsible for co-writing I Do Not Notice and Illegal.
More info:
When the Sunday Times wrote of Cortney Tidwell's limited edition, UK-only debut mini album that "the mouth waters at the prospect of her debut proper", it's unlikely that they expected it to sound quite as intoxicating as DON'T LET STARS KEEP US TANGLED UP. For whilst the UK press was pretty much united in its acclaim for this "heavenly spirit from Nashville" (Metro), with The Times declaring "the last time something this spectral and imaginative emerged on the female side of Americana it was being delivered by the deeply gifted Mary Margaret O'Hara", they could not have been aware that the six track mini album, "as eerie as it is exciting" (The Guardian), only scraped the surface of TIDWELL's musical ambitions.
DON'T LET STARS KEEP US TANGLED UP is undeniably a stunning full length debut album, as tinged with euphoria as it is with melancholy. Where the mini album was dominated by images of light and darkness, …STARS… is obsessed with the ebb and flow of love and the eternal search for connection, its lyrics full of impressionistic and evocative images that linger in the mind as long as the heartfelt and unashamedly emotional music. That Tidwell found the creative process draining and at times impossibly overwhelming is something only insiders could know judging from the finished article, given its strident confidence and stylistic breadth.
From the opening minutes it's clear that …STARS… is a huge leap forward from the self styled "gothic country" of the mini album. The enigmatically titled Eyes Are At The Billions may open sweetly with a melody that recalls Rickie Lee Jones but soon explodes into a spectacular starlit burst of noise, indicative of the risks that Tidwell takes throughout. Pictures On The Sidewalk seems to slow down time, whilst forthcoming single The Missing Link sees elements of Joy Division's Transmission topped with triumphant, angelic whoops. The abstract melody of I Do Not Notice sits gloriously over a backdrop so unusual that the mastering studio sent it back after they thought there was a fault with the files, whilst La La and New Commitment meander gently into Laurel Canyon territory. Meanwhile the epic title track, with its detailed electronica and subtle but electrifying climax, tells the heartbreaking if unlikely story of love between an earthbound human and a starstruck alien. The slinky, sophisticated and somewhat sinister groove of Society sees Tidwell joined by Lambchop's Kurt Wagner, a voice of weary wisdom that contrasts flawlessly with Tidwell's uplifting delivery. Our Time meanwhile, floats ghostly steel guitar, banjo and bazouki (courtesy of Lambchop's William Tyler) over a plea for comfort, before giving way to the extraordinary Illegal, whose haunting melody was the result of Tidwell's first improvised vocal. As with I Do Not Notice, Illegal was co-written with Ryan Norris of Nashville act Hands Off Cuba, recent collaborators with Lambchop. (Norris is also a member of Tidwell's touring band.) Illegal's unsettling and traumatic coda is perfectly offset by the final, widescreen drama of The Tide, a song that yearns for a movie worthy of its dramatic conclusion.
DON'T LET STARS KEEP US TANGLED UP is an album in love with dynamics and harmonies, full of a defiantly feminine grace throughout which Tidwell's spectacular vocals swoop and soar. Comparisons so far have ranged from The Cocteau Twins' Liz Fraser to Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval, Sinead O'Connor to Bjork, and – if recent convert Lee Hazlewood is to be believed – '60s flower child Melanie. But, without a doubt, DON'T LET STARS KEEP US TANGLED UP reveals one thing for certain: Cortney Tidwell is a new and utterly unforgettable new voice, a star in the making.
DON'T LET STARS KEEP US TANGLED UP features eleven brand new tracks:
Eyes Are At The Billions / Pictures On The Sidewalk / The Missing Link / I Do Not Notice / La La / Don't Let Stars Get Us Tangled Up / New Commitment / Society / Our Time / Illegal / The Tide
PRAISE FOR CORTNEY TIDWELL:
"Celestial harmonies tangle round her haunting voice in songs that seethe with darkness. As eerie as it is exciting." - The Guardian, 4/5
"A six track sequence that cannot fail to ensnare... The mouth waters at the prospect of her debut proper." - The Sunday Times
"The last time something this spectral and imaginative emerged on the female side of Americana it was being delivered by the deeply gifted Mary Margaret O'Hara… For desolate, comforting beauty, this is hard to beat." - The Times
"Cocteau Twins and Mazzy Star having a slow-mo orgy. At a torch revue. In a cave... A tremendous new talent. Idiosyncratic, complicated and very, very lush, What's not to love?" - Rocksound, 8/10
"A stunning set of tracks." - The Daily Express
"A tear-stained, echo-laden reverie." - Metro
"A special new talent." - The Sun
"Lookout world: Cortney Tidwell is shockingly talented." - Touch, Alternative Album of the Month, 5/5
"Most striking is her astonishing voice, which occupies a space somewhere between Liz Fraser of the Cocteau Twins and Patsy Cline." - The Stranger
"Ethereal and raw, but reminscent of Bjork, The Sundays and early Tracy Thorn, only with a country twist." - Boys Toys, 4/5
Pre-order @ Boomkat: Cortney Tidwell - Don't Let Stars Keep Us Tangled Up
Update: just googled this via google blog search, from a music blogger: Cortney Tidwell - Don’t Let Stars Keep Us Tangled Up for has some mp3s.
Cortney Tidwell's Don’t Let Stars Keep Us Tangled Up album may very well be the most eerily graceful and beautifully haunting album I've come across all year. It's ethereal and intoxicating, swimming in scorching melancholic melodies, and stained with lush and comforting lyrics of heartbreak and euphoria. Heavily reminiscent of Bjork, Mazzy Star, and the Cocteau Twins, Cortney Tidwell's tremendous talent is not something to be overlooked.

Fujiya & Miyagi - Transparent Things
Press release: FUJIYA & MIYAGI - TRANSPARENT THINGS - TIRK 017 - release date May 15th.
The Guardian review Fujiya & Miyagi - Transparent Things
The music borrows from the best: the frictionless rhythms of Can and Neu!, the bone-dry funk of Brian Eno-era Talking Heads and the stream-of-consciousness surrealism of Underworld. Fujiya & Miyagi's low profile is inexplicable. This is a multi-faceted delight from start to finish.
Listen to Fujiya & Miyagi on myspace.com the track Ankle Injuries reminds me of Appliance circa 2001
FACT magazine interview Fujiya & Miyagi
Despite sounding like a couple of Japanese cartoon characters, Fujiya & Miyagi are in fact David Best (vocals, strictly non-prog-rock Moog), Steve Lewis (keys, beats) and Matt Hainsby (bass guitar). If you've bought any of their three delightfully collectable ten-inch singles thus far, then you'll already been acqainted with their dinstinct fusion of krautrock and electronica, and their love of unusual, provacative wordplay. If not, what the hell are you waiting for?

Boomkat review burial - burial
Boomkat review burial - burial
Certain to be one of the most memorable albums of the year and without a doubt its most groundbreaking - Burial's debut album has already been subject to extensive discussion and focus dotted around the entire musical spectrum, from the cavernous Dubstep community at one end to the expansive critical behemoth of Pitchfork and Simon Reynolds at the other. Cliché and hyperbole aside, it's true to say that only once in while we're presented with an album of such chilling sensation, tempered skill and emotional mastery that the listener is overwhelmingly submerged into the producer's wholly realised creation of a musical urban legend. Burial's sonic and geographic roots in an anonymous south London location are clearly apparent in the subterranean blues of opener 'Distant lights', affecting the synapses with MDMA singed pads floating over an impossibly slinky 2-step syncopation and luscious diva lick, summoning lost feelings for mid-late 90's rave dystopia. On the narrative tip Spaceape becomes the dark interpreter for the phantom dancehall machinations of 'Spaceape', whilst 'wounder's' offstep organ stabs part the way for the comforting paranoia of 'Night Bus'. 'Southern comfort' is one of two tracks lifted from the stunning 'south London boroughs' EP that first introduced Burial to us about a year ago, epitomising the dynamic impetus behind Burial's legend-creating narrative consistent throughout the album. 'Gutted' expresses a mournful sonic sentiment, before the emotional pinnacle of Broken Home's tumultuous bassline and disembodied capleton lick leaves you in a crippled mess. The haunted rhythmic bliss of 'Prayer' slips into catharsis, clearing the airwaves for Burial to allow the ghosts of long-gone transmissions, raves and soundsystem reverberations to be channelled through his expanded bandwidth for album closer 'Pirates'. Respect to hyperdub, a shocking debut.
This album was listed as a May 15th release, but I notice it is now listed on some webshops as a May 22nd or even a May 29th release e.g: here.

Electronic Music Netlabel Guide
Gridface present Gridface: Electronic Music Netlabel Guide
The netlabel scene has exploded the last couple of years, but it’s hard to keep track of these (often short-lived) ventures. I decided to explore some of the more well-established sites. Unless otherwise noted, these labels all focus on IDMish electronic music, and their releases are free and exclusive to the Web.

Robin Guthrie presents Lumiere Live
Picturehouse Cinemas: Robin Guthrie presents Lumiere Live in June at these cities: Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Liverpool, York, Oxford, Cambridge, Stratford-upon-Avon, Bath, Exeter, Brighton and a few locations in London.
Robin Guthrie
(Cocteau Twins)
presents
Lumiere Live
Picturehouse Summer Tour 2006
Lumiere is an hour-long animated film created as a backdrop to a sublime collection of stunningly atmospheric guitar-based instrumentals of truly hypnotic beauty.
It has been exhaustively assembled with the same craft which Robin has used in the sonic world for years, an interweaving and layering of images, creating distinct moods which are reflected by the music being played - "improvised within the framework; dictated by the visuals", relying on layers of treated guitars, textures and sumptuously cyclic melodies…
As the founder member of the seminal Cocteau Twins, Robin Guthrie has created some of the most beautiful music of the past two decades and is widely regarded as a musical visionary. The distinctive sonic landscapes that have become his trademark are on display throughout Lumiere and his many admirers will find much that they recognise and love.
The performance draws musically from Imperial, the acclaimed instrumental album he released in 2004, as well his recent soundtrack to Gregg Araki's award-winning film Mysterious Skin. The performance will also include some new material from his forthcoming LP Continental.

Humcrush - Hornswoggle
Rune Grammofon recently announced:
The previously announced Phonophani album is ready for release in mid May, with a superb second album from Humcrush (Ståle Storløkken and Thomas Strønen) to follow shortly after. In late June we hope to have the new Svalastog album ready for release.

HUMCRUSH - Hornswoggle
CD Rune Grammofon RCD 2055
Streetdate: June 23, 2006
http://www.runegrammofon.com
The second album from the duo that is THOMAS STRØNEN and STÅLE STORIØKKEN, now simply calling themselves Humcrush, after the title of their debut from 2004. While that had a focus on rhythm and abstract grooves this is a more varied, subtle and somehow eclectic output.
Thomas Strønen has studied music and composition. He is a regular member of several bands, most notably FOOD, MARIA KANNEGAARD TRIO and PARISH, the quartet led by Swedish ace pianist Bobo Stenson. Having appeared on 30 records, he released his first solo album "Pohlitz" earlier this year. As is the case for most Norwegian jazz musicians of his generation he has played with just about everybody and been a frequent performer at the Norwegian and European festival circuit for several years.
Ståle Storløkken is a founder member of SUPERSILENT, TERJE RYPDAL's SKYWARDS, BOL and jazzrock quartet CUCUMBER but was first noticed with freeform trio VESLEFREKK with fellow Supersilent members Arve Henriksen and Jarle Vespestad. This group was formed as a result of meeting at the ”jazz academy” in Trondheim, an important breeding ground for a whole generation of young players in Norway. He is probably the most interesting and adventurous electric keyboard player operating on the Norwegian scene at the moment.
There's an archive mined on "Humcrush" but the duo's application is fresh and functional and entirely appealing. - The Wire (UK)
It is the sense of pulling ideas out of the ether and developing them into miniature pieces with an inner logic and sense of continuity that makes these nine improvisations so compelling. - Allaboutjazz (US)

Marsen Jules - Les Fleurs
marsen jules will release a new album: Les Fleurs on City Centre Offices on June 12th
[Info via Dense Promotions, Berlin]
MARSEN JULES - Les Fleurs
CD/LP City Centre Offices Towerblock 034
Streetdate: June 12, 2006
http://www.city-centre-offices.de
If 'Herbstlaub' represented the sound of frost shrouded autumn, then new album 'Les Fleurs' sees Marsen Jules throwing open the windows and welcoming in the scent of spring. An intricately plotted series of ambient machinations, last year's 'Herbstlaub' was a record that delighted in technology without leaving the listener suffering from digital cold-shoulder - exchanging the often austere environs of sample-based compositions for a piquant study of lush crate-digging.
Opening through the beautiful chimes of 'Oeillet Sauvage', Jules allows a diffused soundscape to slowly bloom - enveloping the listener in a miasma of creamy vibraphone-bruised resonance that is neither overpowering nor sleight. Bolstered by the introduction of genuine instrumentation, Jules seems to have discovered a more outlandish side to his personality, with the thrumming percussion of 'La Digitale Poupre' and sonorous bass of 'Coquelicot' both exhibiting a more pronounced willingness to firm up the tacit reference points in his work. Whilst comparisons can be readily drawn with the likes of Harold Budd, Max Richter, Arvo Pärt and even William Basinski, Marsen Jules is nonetheless utterly unique - mixing his evident love of skewed compositions with a real ear for melody. The aural equivalent of catching sight of something on a sunny day from the corner of your eye, 'Les Fleurs' shreds its source material then scatters it to the wind - creating a sound that is at once cal
ming without becoming soporific or exhilarating without veering towards the breathless. Managing to introduce lashing of strings for 'Coeur Saignant' and not call upon the clichéd notions of cheap orchestration or dreaded 'soundtrack to an imagery film...' reference, Jules demands a wider audience for his work than the more closed-gate aspects of the leftfield sometimes allow, closing the album with 'Oeillet En Delta' wherein a honeyed breed of blunted ambience brings down the curtain in considerable style. If the summer is half as good as this musical spring, we're in for a scorcher...
