BW & BK report EPHEL DUATH Guitarist Launches Label!

News @ Ephel Duath

New Record label is born:

AMARANTH RECORDINGS

Amaranth Recordings born from an idea of A&R Davide Tiso (Ephel Duath's guitar player), and code666, responsable for Marketing and Production.

The Label will work with genres usually not touched by code666, like post-rock, electronic, trip-hop, post-hardcore and dark wave.

"The word "amaranth" beyond to being a clear callback to the Ephel Duath's album "The Painter's Palette", efficaciously encloses the concept that lives behind this label:
"amaranth" comes from the ancient Greek, is the substantivized present participle of the verb "amaraino", it means "not to wither, to be durable".
The connection is simple: to produce music that goes out from the actual consumerism and standardization being something that last in the time, something than does not wither."

Davide Tiso

Anathema News

News from Daniel Cavanagh 10.09.2003
"The album is all finished now and is called A Natural Disaster. The songs are called Harmonium, Balance, Closer, Are You There?, Childhood Dream, Pulled Under, A Natural Disaster, Flying, Electricity, Violence. It's about 55 minutes long, has 2 instrumentals, should appeal to some of the Anathema fans I am sure. It's a decent album, but not one that will be repeated, the next one will be taking a different approach. It should be released around November I guess. The artwork is looking good. Travis Smith has come up with some decent stuff like. It was recorded and mixed in Parkgate Studios, apart from 2 songs mixed in Nottingham at Electric Mayhem. It was produced by the band and the engineer Dan Turner. It's ok. I think you will like it." Daniel Cavanagh

New Releases @ Piccadilly Records

Some new releases listed in the weekly guide [via e-mail] from Manchester's music emporium Piccadilly Records

Black Lipstick - Converted Thieves
Glitterhouse

On their debut album "Converted Thieves", the Texan foursome Black Lipstick tackle the great themes; blowing off work, getting F'd up, getting by, fate, divine intervention, death, determination, stealing girlfriends and keeping them. All delivered with more than a hint of the Velvet Underground, cool Sonic Youth-esque guitars and drawled, slacker vocals. The depth of "Converted Thieves" sets it apart from the band's garage rock contemporaries, and the group's unpretentious, all-too-Texan, party spirit distinguishes them from dour practitioners of art rock.

The Blow - The Concussive Caress, Or, Casey Caught Her Mom Singing Along With The Vacuum
K

Khaela Maricich is the Blow, also a member of the Dub Narcotic studio gang. Khaela recorded this entire album on the Dub Narcotic 16 track tape deck, producing it herself, with guest appearances by a few friends: Susan Ploetz, Anna Oxygen, Mirah, Nora Danielson, Jason Anderson and Jenn Kliese. Like secret mantras, these are adult versions of children's rhymes adapted for more complicated situations, songs people want to sing for their loved ones, but probably never will.

The Boggs - Stitches
City Rockers

Following on from where their debut "We Are The Boggs We Are", "Stitches" begins with a terrifyingly mad roar and culminates with a joyous and cathartic fanfare. At once meticulous and destructive it is an album unlike any other. The tracks range from frantic, banjo strummed country numbers with wailing Cajun-style vocals to funereal, downbeat blues. Encompassing everything from American folk to country to rockabilly, there's so much crammed in, that it takes a few listens to get into, but it's worth the effort!

The Fall - The Real New Fall LP Formerly Country On The Click
Action

The Real New Fall LP Formerly Country On The Click" is a studio-recorded album containing 11 brand new tracks plus a Lee Hazelwood cover version. Originally slated for release earlier this year under the title "Country On The Click" this album has been remixed and fine tuned by Mark E Smith himself...

Howard Hello - Don't Drink His Blood
Temporary Residence

Written, recorded and produced entirely by Kenseth Thibideau (Pinback, Tarentel, Rumah Sakit) and Marty Anderson (Dilute), "Don't Drink His Blood" is a mystical adventure of pop proportions that few have ever reached. More in tune with his other band, Pinback than ever before, the mind-blowing combination of sounds and styles is truly unlike anything else at the moment. Add to that the fact that it carries the contemplative message of being seduced by commercial media, and you have an album that is more important than it leads on, and often too catchy for you to notice. Seduced, indeed. No one saw this coming, but we sure hope it never goes away.

Manishevitz - City Life
Jagjaguwar

"City Life" is the third Manishevitz album, but it is truly the first product of the band Manishevitz. The first two albums, were largely composed by Adam Busch and Via Nuon, but now, a new larger band nucleus has evolved to also now include cohorts Joe Adamik, Ryan Hembrey, Nate Lepine and Fred Lonberg-Holm. Vocalist Adam Busch has foregone his oft-indiscernible mumbling-like singing for a more articulated and attitude-fueled vocal performance that resembles that of Bryan Ferry's 70s work. Both the band and the record features an all-star cast of Chicago players, including members of Califone, Edith Frost's band, Shannon Wright's band, Terminal Four, Light Box Orchestra, Central Falls, Bevel, John Zorn's band, Lofty Pillars, Pinetop Seven, Boxhead Ensemble, and Simon Joyner's band.

Movietone - The Sand And Stars
Domino

Intended to sound like 'a jazz record being played from across the bay', this album is a beautiful, delicate affair. Gentle strings, and clarinet drift through the gently strummed guitars and piano / keyboards. The fragile folkish vocals complement the music beautifully.

Refree - Nones
Acuarela

To talk of influences, classic songwriting, chanson or post-folk seems meaningless, when it is patently clear that the aim of this record is to extract the maximum out of a creatively inspired moment. Here, we should pay special attention to the rich instrumentation of the record from the dark to the luminous.

The Rock Of Travolta - Uluru
Tablature

Following previous releases on their Juggernaut label, their debut album "Uluru" is a major step forward in both songwriting and production. Their sound is influenced both by guitar-based bands such as Radiohead and Smashing Pumpkins and more electronic elements from Add N To (X), Trans Am and Squarepusher. On this album the band have recruite David Line from Seafood to sing on "Everything's Opened Up" whilst Joe Bennett from Goldrush played violin and trumpet on a number of tracks.

Six Organs Of Admittance - Compathia
Holy Mountain

Recently featured as part of the Wire's "New Weird Americana" cover story, Six Organs' deliver their fourth full length, drifting seamlessly away from the chance-operated celestial jams of before, they seem more focussed, and the electric / acoustic guitar of Ben Chasny is augmented by fellow Comets On Fire collaborator Ethan Miller's sitar. This is atmospheric, avant-folky and ethereal.

Static Films - Force Over Distance
Blue Sanct

Static Films are singer / songwriter Mark Trecka and arranger / multi-instrumentalist Douglas Tesnow as well as an ever-revolving cast of players from cellists to walkie-talkie players to ten-piece choirs. Having walked the paths of experimental tone construction and noise-rock freak-out through fields of folk and sincere poetics, Static Films seem to be currently residing in a delicate location, cushioned on all sides by folk and soul, rock and blues, and an impassioned spirit that affords the most daring of methodologies. Recorded at six different locations throughout three cities and over three years, "Force Over Distance" somehow maintains a coherence and a unity. While holding a place among contemporaries such as the Microphones, Bright Eyes, Devendra Banhart, Entrance and others, Static Films harken to an older tradition of fusing rock and folk with soul and emotion in the ways Of Tim Buckley, Robert Wyatt, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beach Boys or Van Morrison.

Swell - Well?
Badman

Second album remastered and repackaged with bonus material and alternate versions of original tracks, "Well" is a must-have for all die-hard fans, and perfect for those looking to acquaint themselves with one of the finest bands to emerge out of San Francisco.

Nice Nice - Chrome
Temporary Residence

To truly understand the color and shape of Nice Nice, you must really see them live. Only then will you realize that every sound heard on this record, every intricate polyrhythmic layer is live. There are no overdubs, and there are only two people in the band. Born in Olympia, Wa and now calling Portland their home, guitarist Jason Buehler and percussionist Mark Shirazi meticulously warp hard funk, psyche, soul, dub, angular rock and no-wave noise into a mechanical beast that can take you from dream to dance in 30 seconds flat. The instrumentation is relatively simple: guitar and drums. But it's the endless tap-dancing of effects pedals and rock solid dub beats that make every moment more magical than the last. Recommended to fans of the Load label, Leaf label, the new weird Americana scene and old school New York punk funk ala ESG and James Chance.

Hymie's Basement - Hymie's Basement
Lex

Jonathan 'Yoni' Wolf, AKA Anticon / cLOUDDEAD man Why?, and Andrew Broder, AKA Ninja Tune's The Fog have teamed up here to make a lo-fi song-based LP that's more avant rock or anti-folk than hip hop, running through territory touched by Yo La Tengo, Beck, Radiohead and Boards Of Canada. Recorded in Mid-West indie mecca recording studio, Hymie's Basement, the duo have costructed 15 beautiful DIY folk-rock-and-beats songs.

Lullatone - Computer Recital
Audio Dregs

Melodic electonic / avant soundscape pop

Margo - The Catnap
Tsk! Tsk!

French trio who play warm and delicate electronic organic glitchy-pop sounds.

Rope - Widow's First Dawn
Family Vineyard

Originally formed as a Poland-based bass / guitar duo in 1998, Rope has since relocated to Chicago and expanded into a self described 'avant-moodswing rock' trio. Robert Iwanik (bass / vocals), Przemyslaw Chris Drazek (guitar, 12-string acoustic guitar) and Illinois native Michael J. Kendrick (trap set, household percussion) have forced a thousand years of oppression, seething and lost chance into a cascading and ultra-dynamic group sound that will draw in fans of experimental rock and composition.

Psychonauts - Songs For Creatures
International Deejay Gigolos

The Psychonauts debut album instantly transforms the innovative DJ duo into producers of pulsing electronic funk, lush pastoral pop, cinematic disco-funk and more. Opening with the drifting psychedelic version of "Windmills Of Your Mind, "Circles", the LP through great electro-disco, gentle melodic indie with James Yorkston on "Hips For Scotland", electroclash with Siobhan Fahey on "Fear Is Real" and their Pig Bag style punk-funk bomb "Hot Blood".

Various Artists / International DJ Gigolos CD 7
Gigolo

DJ Hell compiles this 30 track collection of of electroclash, electro and punk-funk coolness. Includes tracks by Freaks, Fat Truckers, Psychonauts, Mick Mills, Crack We Are Rock, Fischerspooner, Mu, Chris Korda, Linda Lamb, Trevor Jackson, Liquid Sky, Crossover, Pink Grease etc.

Captain Beefheart And The Magic Band - Dichotomy
Ozit Morpheus

An amazing collection of previously unreleased Beefheart material from the 60s and 70s. 23 tracks in total, the booklet also includes previously unpublished photos.

DOA - Anarchy In Canada
Sudden Death

Fifteen tracks of never before released studio material from 1981 to 1984, arguably the band's finest, most productive years. Bonuses include the previously lost track "They Saved Hitler's Brain" from '81 and "Kill Kill This Is Pop" from 1979's super rare "Vancouver Compilation" LP.

Various Artists / Bah Rumba - 10 Years Of Dancing
BBE

BBE celebrate a decade of nights at this Shaftesbury Avenue club in London. There's a broad cross section of tracks representing the different nights the club has had on, from Kenny Hawkes deep house feat, Space, to BBE's own eclectic Night People. Includes RSL's "Wesley Music" anthem, house from Toob and Inner City, latin and jazz-funk from Roberto Pla and Roy Ayers, hip hop-soul from Will I Am and King Britt and broken beats from BB Boogie.

Riow Arai - Mind Edit
Leaf

Tokyo beat producer's first album release outside his own country. Influenced as much by Chicago post-rock and German electronica as it is by the cut up styles of Matthew Herbert or Rob Swift, or the straight up hip hop of RZA or Busta Rhymes. This is hip hop like you've never heard before, masterfully crafted, incredibly fresh and quite unique.

Donna Summer Vs Ove Naxx - Split Album
Adaadat / Very Friendly

This split release on Adaadat sees the pairing of two promising newcomers with contrasting as well as innovative takes on breakcore music. Firstly we have Donna Summer not the 70s disco diva, but Brooklyn resident Jason Forrest, a DJ at New York independent radio station WMFU famous for his genre splicing DSP madness released on the labels Irritant and Brklyn Beats. Donna Summer is a frenetic and highly entertaining tour de force taking in disco, prog rock, gabba and digital noise along the way. Secondly is Habikino City Breakcore marvel Ove Naxx real name Isao Sano. Having just completed an EP for DJ Rupture's Soot records. This release sees Ove Naxx teaming up with Osaka MC's Wolf Pack to produce a devastating audio barrage of jungle, video-game themes, heavy metal, and Japanese weirdness.

Dwayne Sodahberk - Unfortunately
Tigerbeat6

The monumental third release and second full length album by Dwayne Sodahberk for Tigerbeat6 represents one of the label's most ambitious and fulfilling forays into modern pop music. Sodahberk gives "Unfortunately" a warm, analog glow through digital thumps, tweaks, and textures. His cutely aggressive pitters and patters contrast the emotionally charged noisy bits and adjoin intriguing melodies, gorgeous vocals, and solid structures.

Jehst - Falling Down
Low Life

UK rapper Jehst delivers a lyrical feast over inventive psychedelic sounds-meets hip hop beats on this Low Life LP. Supporters include Mr Scruff and Gilles Peterson.

Da Lata - Serious
Palm Pictures

Patrick Forge and Chris Franck return with a worldwide guest selection on this new Da Lata LP. Singers and players on these nu-jazz, latin, afro-funk and soul fusing grooves include Jhelisa Anderson, Baaba Maal, BITA collaborator Bembe Segue, Nina Miranda, Pedro Martins and Marcelo Jeneci Da Silva.

Jonny L - 27 Hours A Day
Piranha

This nine track CD has already been getting rave reviews - number two in DJ's drum'n'bass chart, 4/5 in IDJ, 5/5 in Knowledge, 8/10 in ATM. An uncompromising set of tracks that cover musical flavours to tear out floorfillers. All the tracks will be coming out as separate 12"s over a period of time.

Various Artists / DJ Kicks - Chicken Lips
K7

Dean Meredith and Andy Meecham are now joined by Akwaaba's Steve 'Fela' Kotey for the Chicken Lips TRIO, and the three of them have put together an ace, eclectic selection of influences for this DJ Kicks compilation. Includes Jimmy Spicer's Jellybean mixed funker "The Bubble Bunch", Nina Hagen's yodelling Kraut-reggae weirdness "African Reggae", Dennis Bovell's dubbed-up mix of The Raincoats' afro-tinged punk-funker "Animal Rhapsody", Lindtrom's electro-disco, Colourbox's proto-sampling coolness "Shotgun", a bit of Rhythm & Sound reggae and some psyche-rock from Brain Ticket.

21 track mix CD includes extras by Brainticket, Karin Krog, The Congos, Gwen Guthrie, Warp 9, Sharon Redd, Big Two Hundred, etc and an exclusive Chicken Lips track.

ICON OF COIL - Android

Details of a new single from Icon of Coil [via an e-mail newsletter from Music Non Stop]

One year after their chart breaking album "The Soul is in the Software", top Norwegian electro act Icon Of Coil return triumphant with a brand new 4 track single ! Now signed to electro label extraordinaire Out Of Line, "Android" marks quite a positive change in the band's sound which could be best described as Power-Future-Electro. "Android" still retains that quintessential IOC sound, mixing powerful, anthemic structures with an extremely danceable and infectious club attack - successfully catapulting the musical inheritance of EBM firmly into the new century. This is NOT soft core electro dance, but hard futuristic EBM laced with new ideas and delivered with power and presence. "Android" contains 3 remixes of the title track plus IOC's classic take on legendary Front 242 anthem "Head- hunter" - this fan favourite up to now only included as an encore track during live performances.

Released 24th November 2003.

dotmusic under new management: Yahoo

The ownership of dotmusic has changed once again, dotmusic is no longer part of BT Openworld - it's now part of Yahoo UK & Ireland: YAHOO! FOR DOTMUSIC

This is no big shock - as BT have gone into partnership as BT-Yahoo for ISP/Broadband services in the UK, and BT have previously stated they wanted to get out of the content game. [As the MediaGuardian.co.uk reported last month.]

So this will be the 3rd ownership of dotmusic - previously owned by United newspapers/ Music Week then BT/BT Openworld and now Yahoo UK & Ireland.

So dotmusic - NME.Com's only direct UK based commercial daily music website rival - in terms of scale - is now owned by a key Internet Content Provider - it will be interesting to see how Yahoo integrate dotmusic into their portal.

New Releases @ Fopp for this week [week beginning: 27th October] with added press quotes. Including these two albums:

JONNY GREENWOOD - BODY SONG OST
label: EMI

The first solo project from the Radiohead camp, rumour has it they'll all be having a shot in the near future. Jonny Greenwood's atmospheric score to an arthouse movie that tells the story of your typical human life by using clips from a century of film. The music compliments this celuloid-sampling perfectly...

"The score itself is much like Jonny's contributions to Radiohead - a surreal mixture of lush strings, pumping guitar and electronic experiments."
NME

PSYCHONAUTS - SONGS FOR CREATURES
label: GIGOLO

The Psychonauts debut album instantly transforms the innovative DJ duo into producers of pulsing electronic funk, lush pastoral pop, cinematic disco funk and more. Alongside Trevor Jackson, Gramme and longtime, like-minded friend Tim Goldsworthy of The DFA they pre-empted the current interest in disco-punk by several years. Included is the albums taster single Fear Is Real (vocals Siobhan Fahey) and Hips For Scotland (vocals James Yorkston) which has already been causing a stir....

"It's a deliciously diverse set, fusing the raw-edged funk of 'Psychedelic Shack' era Temptations with aching electro-funk, lysergic folk and dub-drenched electronica, resulting in a collection that oozes organic soul as much as it marches to the heartbeat of machinery."
BANG

"A huge and wonderful surprise: an album to love and fall in love to. 'Songs For Creatures' is released on German DJ Hell's ever-provocative Gigolo label. Hell has covered Barry Manilow and pioneered the new-school electro-pop; here again, he shows us he knows something we don't (but would like to)."
MOJO

"Yeovil Town took a hundred years to get promoted into the Football League. One of the town's other famous products have been similarly slow to really mix it with the big boys. Paul Mogg and Pablo spent the 90s playing blistering breakbeat sets, remixing David Holmes among others and making a mix album of the entire Mo 'Wax catalogue. This long awaited original LP should see them break straight into the Premiership."
X-RAY

"If being popular in fashionable circles is a crime, Psychonauts are guilty as charged. More importantly, however, they're also culpable of making one of the strongest albums this year, and in some style."
Jockey Slut !

This week's new releases @ Boomkat - a Pelicanneck Online Music Store include:

ALBUM OF THE WEEK!
Post Human - Lagrange Point
Seed

Posthuman are cousins Rich Bevan and Josh Doherty, formally cohorts of Manchester's guerilla cohorts Skam. Debuting with a 5 hour live set, supporting Gescom and Altern 8 at the infamous Compression night, the boys went on to release the debut installment in the label's infamous `Smak' offshoot some time later. Seed was founded in 2000 and has been freaking us ever since with a slew of new and respected artists joining Josh and Rich on the roster. Two years have passed since the first Posthuman album, and the intervening period has seen both the label and the boys' sound flourish, with regular intermediary live masterclasses at their now legendary tube station parties, where they've been joined by just about anyone who's anyone, Aphex, Vibert, Funkstorung, Skam, Plaid, Richard x, T Raumschmiere, the list goes on. Retreating from these hectic events, and escaping London, for the past few months Rich and Josh have been esconced, locked away in a cottage in the scottish countryside. The growth in their sound is evident, a new found melancholic lyricism will really surprise even hardcore Seed afficionados, yet their attention to a tough bass and rhythm still shows their auspicious heritage. 'Purgatory' might seem a strange place to start an album, but the bad beats build in serious fashion, and very soon you just know this is a fitting opener to an epic. 'Walking from the gallows' opens like some of the best moments of Anthony Manning's work, before a squashed, other worldly sound, kinda like skinning a bullfrog, ushers in a darkly haunting piece. After this, the acoustic piano of 'Two Brothers Fall' offers a personal, grounded moment - quietly beautiful, even autobiographical in its tone, Posthuman are moving through to the other side here. 'Up Against The Wall' steps back through the portal, bringing still the crystal melodies, until one wicked crisp break drops, pushing the centre of the album on to new heights. 'A Child After Beating' sustains this strangely altered, disturbed but resilient mood, 'As Old As The Waterfall' revels in almost symphonic bliss, riding a deep, puttering electronic undertow, like an underground stream. 'The skull' brings a rude awakening, square bass as we like and a brooding, gathering, time is running out sensation. Ending with the title track, there's an eerie feeling of images seen, energy dissolving, time travelled - the heightened beats' production bring to mind classic moments of the Boards' darker, more intense cousins. This is one big record in every sense of the word, excellent stuff.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK!
Venetian Snares - The Chocolate Wheelchair Album
Planet Mu

Mr Funk continues his world decimation with this essentialist (mentalist) assault on our senses. His past history of releasing uncompromising and futuristic as well as HARD music makes this one highly anticipated album. Opening with a humourous and superb mash up of the theme to Coronation Street (yes!) in the form of 'Abomination Street'. This isn't in the usual 5 minute cut and paste business, Snares puts a lot of work in to make the samples not so obvious and utilizes the strings perfectly over rampant cut up jazz drums, with a dash of hip hop vocals, and a touch of reggae delay he crafts a brilliant drum and bass number from an extremely sh*t tv show, awesome. All the tracks have source inspirations and the samples are the clue, if you can recognise them, 'Langslide' is one of the most frantic of the 10 tracks, extremely fast cuts and samples are thrown together in a maelstrom of noises to create a digital rhythm of insane proportions, sub bass, dark spooky synths and distorted timestretched drums crash into voice samples that have been put through the Snares mangler, brilliant, tight and headwrecking stuff. Now for a Venetian Snares feelgood track, the jaunty jungle of 'Einstein-Rosen Bridge' with its horn stabs and guitar slices backed with umpaloompa vocals talking about time and space (google up 'Einstein-Rosen Bridge' and you'll see) trots along at breakneck speed, but retains an air of childish fun due to the vocals and crazy synth noises taken straight from Sesame street - brilliant fun. Next, the track of the album explodes across the speakers, RUDEBWOY style, 'Hand Throw' is THE ragga jungle anthem for 2003, completely Snared up and dissected all over the place, gabba beats clash against ruff Amen breaks while ragga vocals chug along at light speed and Mr Funk rips the track to its tiny pieces and re-constructs it into something completely different for the latter half with the fastest kick rolls ever, truly unbelievable. Then there's the reggae spliced 'Ghetto Body Buddy' and 'Herbie Goes Ballistic', more highlights from an album that will take a few listens to love, but only one to decide it's yet another unmissable joint from Venetian Snares. Killa!

Donna Summer Vs Ove Naxx - Split
Adaadat / Very Friendly

Brand new white hot breakcore release from Adaadat records in conjunction with the Very Friendly label. This limited split album features two of the scene's hottest artists, right now. Donna Summer is the alias of Brooklyn DJ/artist Jason Forray. For this album he's parred with the japanese act Ove Naxx who come approved and discovered by DJ/Rupture who recently released their mini album 'Bullets From Habikino City HxCx' on Soot. As you'll guess (know) by the name, Donna Summer is music with a hell of a lot of fun attached - mashing up disco, with punk, noise, hypersplatter breaks and some truly wild drum programming. Crazy wild insania but massive fun, broken styles of music this jumped-up can often drive you crazy but Donna has all the tricks to please. Killer stuff. That's the first six tracks, side one over. On the flip Ove Naxx aka Isao Sano utterly wreck's the place, destroying all your senses with his manicmagic amalgam of distorted gabba breaks, insane hyperspeed ragga chat, tsunami waveblasts of noise and wayward japanese kitch pop melodies - fans of Hrvatski's Gai-Jin offshoot alias need to check this out. Check the titles, 'Jinginaki Punxxx!!!', 'No Side Discharge' & 'Anarchy Bomb-Odori' - 'B-Gay In Tsutenkaku' is trult shocking, check the rap from Wolf Pack???? Twelve tracks, jewel case CD and extra lush spot gloss sleeve, white vinyl version. Complete mentalism, hardcore to your brain - essentialist music that you NEEEEDDDD!!!!!!

Ghislain Poirier - Beats As Politics
Chocolate Industries

Now this is a nice surprise. The first part of the megadope double pronged album attack from French/Canadian producer Ghislain Poirier that he'll deliver over the next two weeks (more of that later). After his outstanding works of minimal beauty for labels such as 12k and Now attacking on a political tip fusing his early 12k/Intr-Version minimal works of beauty with a hip hop/electronic kick. For Chocolate Industries 'Beats As Politics' is a wicked eleven track variation of extra chunky hip hop with electronica attachments. Straighter and more direct than Prefuse 73 this is more in tune with the Dabrye 'One/Three' album with an extra deep production depth utilising micro-arabic samples, deep-sonic-beats and precise melodic lurches. Plus on three tracks vocals come to the fore, 'Gray Space' featuring Diverse plus 'De L'art De La Fellation' & 'Carquois' feature french/canadian rapper Sba rhyming in his mother tongue in a style similar to TTC (Big Dada). One superb album, then next week his new Intr-Version CD 'Conflits' which takes this new sound even further out with devastating results.

Iso 68 / Various - Here/There Played By....
Hausmusik

Versions, remixes and reinterpretations from Calexico, Corker/Conboy, Masha Qrella, Peter Thiessen, Sixtoo & Matt Kelly, Loopspool, Christof Kurzmann. Well well well, now iso 68s Thomas Leboeg and Florian Zimmer have other people working for them. This might be due to their constant engagement in numerous side projects in and around Hamburg and Munich. Whilst busy producing a radio play with author Katja Huber for the Bayrischer Rundfunk and composing a spoken-word-piece for poems by beat poet Robert Lax, iso 68 asked some handpicked artist friends to remix tracks from their latest album "Here/There", one of our favourite long players from 2003. Remarkably enough, the artists involved did not just move around samples, some of them even recorded new tracks to the existing song parts. The resulting release is therefore not a typical remix record, it rather contains reinterpretations, sometimes closer, sometimes further from the original. Calexico, who iso68 supported on their 2003 tour in Germany and Scandinavia, contribute sunbleached, dusty Texan charm, absolutely transforming the flavour of this already classic tune. Monika's Berlin-based Masha Qrella, who opened for Calexico in the uk, weaves delicate beats around "Cosmic Bones", Loopspool adds bone-dry, danceable electronic beats and thus a whole new character to Iso68s dream-like, nicely blurred sounds. One could go on raving about this release, as the remixes by Christof Kurzmann, Corker/Conboy, Sixtoo and Peter Thiessen give you every reason to... In short, iso68 can count themselves really lucky because only few remix records can offer tracks which approach the original as intelligently, coherently and respectfully as the artists did here. iso68s beautiful, fragile tracks from "Here/There" ended up in good hands.

Quench - Punctuated
N5MD

New collection of mostly chilled/blissed out electronics from the Funken brothers. Floating beats and widescreen synthetic melodies are the forefront elements. Most of the tracks of long, slowly developing sounds panned across the full frequency and touching on many emotions. Highlights are ' Zane' previously heard on the 'MAS Confusion' comp and the John Carpenteresque 'Scid' . A highly recommended album for people who think they are tired of idm. Next up for the Funken brothers : the Shadow Huntaz project for Skam - be prepared.

Richard Devine - Asect:Dsect
Schematic

Brand new Richie Devine album on Schematic, the finest offering on the label for some time. Building on the blueprint intricacies of 'Lip Switch' and 'Aleamapper', 'Asect:Desect' finds the crunch and funk in more mangled effect shot through heavily rhythmic max'd up workouts wrapping deep blue cloaked harmonics amongst whirling torrents of phased pitches and tough beats. Check the grimy hip hop tempoed 'Dansk Rap' leading the way before the bomb dancefloor killer 'Floccus' drops the beat-wreckage. Elsewhere 'Rusx Fee' kicks out the noisecore blasts that would scare even Aaron Funk. Finally you get the driftsome 'Randale' providing the closing call. Thirteen tracks of widescreen, 3D, full frequency range i-dee-m-shizz - big recommendation.

Riow Arai - Mind Edit
Leaf

Killer UK debut album from the brilliant japanese blitzkreig hip hop beat demolision expert, Riow Arai. Known to us for having released several essential but hard to obtain albums and ep's all released on Soup-Disk in Japan, of whom Leaf have licensed his new album and it's amazing. If you will, imagine a fusion of Dabrye & Prefuse's clipped hip hop beats, Kaman Leung & Kareem's rave technique and El-P's bassiest beatburst brutalism. This is the sort of music that needs to be pumped extra loud. Eleven tracks of some of the finest cut up music available today. Lush packaging and extra fat sound mastering. This sh*t rocks.

Various / Gigolo - International Deejay Gigolo Compilation #7
Gigolo

Whew! Volume 7 rolls out of the Gigolo manufacturing plant, featuring among the 30 tracks DJ Hells remix of P Diddy's `Lets Get Ill' (I never saw that collaboration coming), David Carreta's nu-disco number `Colours', the hi-nrg electro-techno of Savas Pascalidis `Nite Life' , Maurice Fultons `Jealous Kids', the Psychonauts remix of the classic New York electro of `No G.D.M.' by Gina X, Fischerspooner's `L.A. Song, and Trevor Jackson's `Pink Lunch' among many others. The 2cd format takes in the whole of Gigolo's output and throws a few other numbers in from Terrence Fimer, Richard Bartz, Steril and of course DJ Hell's `Keep On Waiting'. More disco punk for the Mullet Massive.

Current 93 - A Little Menstrual Night Music
United Durtro / Anomalous CD

New CD from David Tibet's Current 93 alias here remixed by Nurse With Wound's Steven Stapleton. This album consists of two new versions of 'In Menstrual Night' which were used as the introductory music for Current Ninety Three's two performances at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco on May 9 and 10, 2003. Wonderful outward bound, spooked ambience.

Psychonauts - Songs For Creatures
Gigolo

The Psychonauts return with a new album for Hell's Gigolo label, with special guests including James Yorkston (Domino), ex Bananarama warbler Siobahn Fahey and others. Much feted by the media this album shows the Psychonauts spreading their wings and covering a lot of ground, from the cinematic Axelrod vibes of the opener 'Circles', to the pulsing analog disco of 'Empty Love' and the swirling techy 'Fear is Real'. There is an 80's undercurrent harking back to the innocent days of synth pop as on the Pet Shop Boys-esque 'World Keeps Turning' with its melodramatic vocals and playful simple synths and also the dreamy, easy breakbeat of 'Dream Chaser' which melts analog strings and synths with what sounds like a dash of pedal steel guitar floating in the background.

2mex - Sweat Lodge Infinite
Temporary Whatever / Mush

Brand new, true underground hip hop album straight outta LA from the freshly blessed and Mush backed Temporary Whatever label. 2Mex is one of the few mexican born rappers making a name for himself in the US hip scene. Very much a part of the LA crews Project Blowed, The Shapeshifters and his duo alongside Xololanxinxo, Of Mexican Descent. This twelve track album is produced by Longevity of the Darkleaf crew who once ran with Jurassic 5. Guest raps come from Aceyalone, Busdriver and members of the Shapeshifters, Awol One, Liferexall and Existereo. This hip hop is raw and somehow strangely sparse yet dense, bringing to mind early Bomb Squad productions with a slightly alien twist. This feeling is reinforced by Mixmaster Wolf scratching on the decks in a rough and raw style like the man Johnny Juice Rosario of early Public Enemy fame. 'Seconds Ago' kicks the mental flow with a political bite over a hype original backing. 'Copy That' has a tense backing and chopped sonics behind a deep bass beat, Kemit and Busdriver join 2Mex for this killer track. 'No Category' is another highlight with Awol and Aceyalone getting busy on a dope next level science bomb. 'Sweat Lodge Infinite' is a dope album of purest bleeding edge hip hop, future proof year 3000. Investigate or regret.

Hymie's Basement (Why? & The Fog) - Hymie's Basement
Lex

Yoni Wolf (aka Anticon's Why?) and Andy Broder (aka The Fog) have teamed up to make a whacky, slacker based out-hop folk experimental record for Lex. Not quite as scary as that description implies, you'd still need to open up your b-boy horizons to get off on it. Sixteen tracks, if you liked Why?'s recent Anticon efforts then you'll like this to..fans of Ninja Tune and cLOUDDEAD listen up!

Soul Position (Rjd2 & Blueprint) - 8 Million Stories
Rhmesayers

Out, at long last, after late last year's 'Unlimited EP' and the recent dope 'Jerry Springer Episode' 12" '8 Million Stories' is finally upon us. This sixteen track album finds both RJD2 and battle rapper supreme, Blueprint at the peak of their powers. RJ's heavy funked production is given a trim and the melodious aspect is expanded upon. Behind Blueprint's multi-layed topics and heartfelt delivery we really can,t go wrong. Check 'Printmatic', classic lyrics, clipped horns, bubblin' bass, and sooooo dope drums, 'you got beef!!!, I got vegetables' is just one of the classic lines. Tune!! 'Inhale' feels like a Antipop refreshment dose, especially on the chorus before the conga ripping beats lace the lyrics's loveveleeee versus!!! 'Just Think' is classic Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth styled, epic!!! and 'Fu*kajob' would run perfectly after Mr Lif's 'Live From The Plantation'. There really are no slackjack tracks on here. A result of taking your time over your job, equalling an essential album. Killer sleeve, killer album - Rhymesayers run tingz.

Various / Galapagos 4 - Laced
Galapagos 4

Bargain priced limited edition instrumental CD set from the Galapagos 4 production unit. New beats and instrumental tracks from Meaty Ogre, DJ White Lightning, Open I, Jackson Jones, Offwhyte and DJ Natural - thirteen tracks deep - every tracks a winner. Chicago's finest do it again with some of the best hip hop instrumental tackle you can get your hands on. Well wicked.

Laika - Wherever I Am I Am What Is Missing
Too Pure

'Wherever I Am, I Am What Is Missing' continues where Laika they left off in 2000, and marks another change in their recording process. Most of what appears on this album is raw and spontaneous, with minimal studio trickery involved and Margaret Fiedler changing her lyrical approach to match the lack of artifice. It is all part of an effort to stop getting obsessed about every minute detail on the record, and to actively get to the heart and the emotions. It is a spacious album layered with feeling; from the wistful sweeping melodies of OeAlphabet Soup, to the dark, rolling hypnotic beats of "Fish For Nails,, Laika,s cool melodies, dub basslines and layers of sound compliment Fiedler,s entrancing vocals which weave effortlessly in and out of the mix.

Loren Connors & David Grubbs - Arborvitae
Hapna

Lush minimal and modal piano/guitar exploration album from David Grubbs and Loren Conners on this new (to us) Swedish label, Hapna. Five tracks of spiky but intermittently beautiful music. Like a Morton Feldman recital by two weary musicians. Delicate sound processing and extended tones set the stage. Textured card slipcase, very limited copies.

Movietone - The Sand and The Stars
Domino

Taking its trigger from a review of their critically acclaimed "The Blossom Filled Streets", "The Sand and The Stars", is intended to sound like "a jazz record being played from across the bay". Which is how Movietone came to find themselves carrying a double bass down a cliff, in the dark. Nina Simone, Jefferson Airplane, The Carter Family, The Band and Sandy Denny are all cited as influences on "The Sand and The Stars", but inspiration in their approach comes from the field recordings of the late producer Alan Lomax, with Movietone moving beyond the studio and out on location to Cornwall for much of its recording. Movietone hail from the same Bristol scene that saw fellow experimentalists Flying Saucer Attack and The Third Eye Foundation flourish. Having re-issued their self-titled debut earlier this year, this is Movietone's fourth album and their first new material since 2000's "The Blossom Filled Streets".

Little Annie & The Legally Jammin - Little Annie & The Legally Jammin'
Italic

New album from Little Annie and Khan (Air Liquide & Jammin' Unit). Little Annie & The Legally Jammin' play a wild, hormone-saturated mixture of spoken song and sometimes harsh, but always swinging rhythms. 'No Wave' based on electronic beats recordings from the epicentres of pop music: New York, Mexico City and Dusseldorf. The very first weirdly choked echo gives you an idea of what kind of sound system The Legally Jammin' is, sometimes playing 'Disco Dub', sometimes 'No Wave Disco'

This week's Jazz on 3 show on Radio 3 features Jim Black's AlasNoAxis

We're not talking showtunes, bebop changes and cycles of fifths, nor are we in the realms of modal jazz, blues or fusion. There are elements of rock here - grunge to be more specific, perhaps some metal but then there are saxophone solos and passages of delicate clarinet. Add in electronic drones, mutant funk rhythms and noise and alas there is no obvious axis.

The 40 greatest US bands today

Yet more attention seeking, thrown together - snapshot lists from The Guardian. As The Guardian attempts to be as stupid as Spin magazine by listing their own version of the 40 greatest US bands today.

And the winner is .... The Flaming Lips

Three weeks ago we published a list of the artists who have made British rock and pop music exciting again. The response was so remarkable we've decided to repeat the exercise - with Americans. We hope you enjoy it.
