Classic Rock magazine have a prog rock special out this month. It covers the usual ground that we’ve come to expect from such overviews, but credit to them for including a good section of the progish strands of folk and jazz. Inevitably there’s the usual list of essential prog rock albums, and inevitably one is always left scratching one’s noggin at what’s in and what’s out.

Fopp Update: Ernst & Young appointed as Administrators & Receivers

Ernst & Young have confirmed the following about Fopp: Fopp Ltd (in Receivership) & Music Zone 2007 Ltd (In Administration)

Tom Burton and Colin Dempster from Ernst & Young LLP have been appointed Joint Receivers of Fopp Limited and Joint Administrators to Music Zone 2007 Ltd.

Context: basic info about Administration and administrative receivership: Administration and administrative receivership | Business Link

The Times report that Fopp were in talks with Virgin Megastores, but a last minute rescue deal could not be agreed: Virgin Megastores fails to rescue rival Fopp - Times Online

The Fopp music chain has closed all stores after a plan to merge with Virgin Megastores failed to win supplier support

The Times Online has learnt that rival Virgin Megastores, controlled by Sir Richard's Virgin Group, had attempted to merge with Fopp, injecting a big rescue loan and taking a 10 per cent stake in a new entity.

It is interesting that The Times have constantly led this breaking news story, meanwhile the BBC can't even get to grips with the basics, incorrectly stating the number of stores closing down: Fopp closes down its 105 stores [not 105, but actually 81 - the current combined number of Fopp stores plus the acquired Music Zone stores that are still remaining!]

  Fopp to go into Administration?

Sad news about UK music, film & books chain Fopp, The Times are reporting that Fopp are ready to appoint administrators: Music chain in talks with administrators - Times Online

Fopp, one of Britain's biggest music retailers, is readying to appoint Ernst & Young amid crisis talks with bankers

update: dated June 29th by The Times:

Fopp in talks with bankers after music stores close - Times Online

Fopp, one the country’s biggest music store groups, is preparing to appoint Colin Dempster of Ernst & Young as administrator as it warned some staff not to expect their monthly pay.

Context: Administration (insolvency) - Wikipedia

Administration is a procedure under the insolvency laws of a number of common law jurisdictions which functions as a rescue mechanism for insolvent companies and allows them to carry on running their business. The process — an alternative to liquidation — is often known as going into administration.

The chain of ruin..context:

Woolworths sell MVC stores to a new private company who run into cashflow problems and go into administration, who then sell the stores onto to Music Zone who run into cashflow problems and enter administration, company is wound up, after this Fopp agree to acquire 67 Music Zone stores in February and now in June 2007 it seems Fopp have called in the administrators.

Classic case of expanding too fast without the necessary finance.

Fopp's problems stem from the acquisition of 67 Music Stores earlier this year. They financially over stretched themselves, and apparently had arguments with suppliers regarding previous Music Zone debts. This in-counjunction with a difficult trading environment for music & books has led to significant cash flow problems.

Since last Saturday, Fopp stores have gone cash only.

Retail analyst Nick Bubb, from Pali International,

"When even someone like Tesco is saying that entertainment sales are weak, it's a sign of the times of how the music and book retail market is performing." Source: The Bookseller

Meanwhile: BBC NEWS | Business | HMV struggles in 'severe' market

Profits at music and book retailer HMV have more than halved as the firm battles against competition from supermarkets and online retailers.

No doubt further information will be unveiled about Fopp tomorrow, including a press release from the administrators, Ernst & Young.

The administrator when appointed will now try to find a private equity company or another company to buy Fopp as a going concern - if this cannot be achieved the company will be wound up.

I believe Fopp is a strong brand and hopefully new owners can be found.

Since it first emerged from Britain’s punk-rock scene in the late 1970s, goth subculture has haunted postmodern culture and society, reinventing itself inside and against the mainstream. Goth: Undead Subculture is the first collection of scholarly essays devoted to this enduring yet little examined cultural phenomenon. Twenty-three essays from various disciplines explore the music, cinema, television, fashion, literature, aesthetics, and fandoms associated with the subculture.

The male vocalist sings in a similar style to Trevor Tanner from 80s band The Bolshoi ! on the track MICRODEATH SOFTSTAR with the music in a similar vintage prog style of Anekdoten

The other track: FORMALDEHYDE the female vocalist reminds me of 1970s era Annie Haslam of Renaissance

Phideaux explain the two tracks:

And so, within days the Doomsday Afternoon glow will be upon us. The album is being mass produced and will shortly be making its way to your favourite music distributor and mail order consortium.

And in preparation for this black day, we have uploaded two tracks from the album. Of course, because the songs are so damn long we had to compress them into nasty tiny MP3s that are somewhat like tinfoil.

However:

First up: MICRODEATH SOFTSTAR (edit and truncated) - this is the finale of the album and was written as the instrumental "freakout". Of course, later on Formaldehyde took that honour. On this most devilish track you can hear the fantastic guitar work of Joel Weinstein (from Time As Wine) as well as Myspace's very own Johnny Unicorn on super keyboards. The ultimate wizard Matthew Parmenter has doused us with terrifying violin and voice as well. You might even hear Arjen Lucassen saying seven secret words at 7:50 into the track... I promise you the sound quality is better when listened to at greater than MP3 VBR 96/128!

Second Track: FORMALDEHYDE (complete) -- This is the track that Martin Orford kindly contributed a synthesizer solo. I am a great fan of his solo work as well as his keyboard stylings with IQ. This is a bit of a duet between Valerie Gracious and myself (although Matthew Parmenter can be heard on violin and voice as well). The second half of this song is a keyboard extravaganza. Listen also to the faaantastic flute of Steve Dindin (or is that dumdum?). Oh, no it's Steve Dundon of Molly Bloom (Spright Night anyone?)

Just seen this come up in my RSS reader, [via the RSS for Recently Added Albums with a release date of 2007]:

Front Cover:

Underworld - Oblivion With Bells

First blogger to break the news: beatnerd.com: Underworld To Release New Album OCT. 2007 has the press release, including:

True to form Underworld tread their own path through modern electronic music tipping a nod to current sounds, styles and
production techniques but never afraid to let their song writing and musicianship shine out in this digital world.

"Oblivion with Bells" draws heavily on Rick and Karls’ vast array of musical influences (Nick Drake, Def Mix, Ricardo
Villalobos, Can, James Holden, Eno) and experiences performing worldwide to create a truly unique Underworld journey.
The album kicks off like Saturday night with Sven Väth, Simian Mobile Disco and Frankie Knuckles all fighting to get on
the decks, then takes you over the flat fields of rural Essex, through Kings Cross with its olympic dreams and piss stained
alleys, ending blissed out in a hidden cove in Ibiza. Epic techno nestles next to frail acoustics, beatific prose next to sharp
urban observation, amazing sound texturing mixed with mobile phone recordings, rarely has the Underworld palette been
so rich.

New Mystic Forest Album for 2007!

Album news update from: Mystic Forest - Avant Progressive Black metal from France

The 8 main tracks of the new album are recorded, arranged, mixed... I have hard time to find the good feeling for the vocals recording, damn this album is so complicated to record yet it will be so, so… So what in fact?... So Mystic Forest'ic... Yes, for all the ones who really wait for this record you won't be disappointed! I promise that this will be the true representation of what Mystic Forest was destined to be!

Mystic Forest on Myspace: www.myspace.com/mysticforestband

Mystic Forest is a romantic black metal band with classical and folk influences. The band hails from France, and was formed in 1997.

Recommended listening the 2 tracks [from the 2004 Romances album] out of 4 on their myspace profile. They would appeal to open-minded fans of post-rock, psychedelic rock, shoegazer, gothic rock and RIO [Rock-In-Opposition] / Avant Progressive Rock as well as Black Metal.

Just listen to the sublime celestial psychedelic atmospherics of these tracks:

Cette Rose que tend la Mort
Si le bois pouvait parler...

One of the finest albums of the decade so far:

Mystic Forest - Romances

the 2004 album: MYSTIC FOREST (France) "Romances" CD

Grim, yet high-calibre continental Black Metal with neo-classical influences and technically active guitar recitals. Dark and dreamy atmosphere supported by uniquely French instrumentation contributing greatly to the intoxicating density and Francophilic flavor!

A predominantly mid-tempo approach occasionally punctuated by periodic bursts of hyperspeed blastbeat and consistently grim vocals throughout (similar to ABIGOR and early EMPEROR); utterly blackened in a subliminal attack! MYSTIC FOREST's totally hallucinogenic "Romances" album features dynamic songs which are panoramic and cinematic in their evocative quality. There is no other Black Metal band, French or otherwise, that sounds like MYSTIC FOREST; truly distinctive, outstanding cult Underground horde that must be heard to be appreciated!aka EIKENSKADEN (on Tumult and Oaken Shield Records)

in particular the track: Tapestry Of The Starless Abstract - is over 11 minutes long, an epic track consisting of many elements.

A 6 piece metal band consisting of violin, 2 guitars, bass, drums, clean and extreme vocals; Ne Obliviscaris hail from Melbourne, Australia, and include a vast array of influences within their sound from progressive to black, thrash, death and melodic metal, and even western art music, jazz and flamenco. Creating music of many extremes, and with compositions often exceeding ten minutes in length, Ne Obliviscaris is at times very technical and complex and at others simple and subtle, creating an extremely original brand of metal that defies normal categorisation.

We are beginning work towards recording 3 or 4 new songs we are currently including in the set. As you can see above, the chance to perform is multiplying. Its not often bands vanish for a decade and reappear. But this is a magic band. You could say, the orginal anitque body is the same, beautifully maintained, but the engine is spanking new. Lights out Asia

Coming next month on the n5MD label the debut album from Lights out Asia: :::::DARLA.COM v3.0....LIGHTS OUT ASIA - Tanks and Recognizers:

Wisconsin post-celestial-shoegazer trio Lights Out Asia delivers their sophomore full length and debut for n5MD titled Tanks and Recognizers. This follow-up to their critic and fan favorite Garmonia (sun sea sky) pushes their sound far forward with a palpable intensity by giving a seemingly subliminal nod to some of the more electronically minded ethereal bands of the mid 80s to early 90s like Breathless, Chapterhouse, My Bloody Valentine or even the more emotionally rich moments of Colourbox. Lights Out Asia who is actually influenced more by a more current crop of like-minded artists such as Mogwai, Massive Attack, and Robin Guthrie’s various works, blend them all, the erstwhile and contemporary, with an updated style, feel and modern expansiveness. Tanks and Recognizers is a cinematic and ambitiously crafted album which could easily fit into any indie rock or electronic music collection. Soaring, floating, and moving forward as it pulls you in to its hopeful heart consuming ebb and flow of electronics, guitars and lofty vocal yearning. Tanks and Recognizers is that perfect album for those days when the horizon and sky are of the same hue and for those moments where every perspective is so gorgeously blurred.

  HTRK - track Fascinator

Listen to this outstanding track: Fascinator by HTRK on myspace: www.myspace.com/htrk

[from a forthcoming album: Marry Me Tonight]

The female vocalist [Jonnine Davis] has a slight Germanic esoteric lilt that reminds me of X-Mal Deutschland or Claudia Brucken [of Propaganda] the closest British reference points would be Jayne Casey from Liverpool 80s band Pink Industry and the fractured slow paced glacial dubby music has a similar sound texture to Insides on the sublime Indides - Euphoria album from the early 90s.

Playlouder recently reviewed a HTRK album: HTRK: Nostalgia (2007) review PLAYLOUDER

Their aesthetic is one of brutal reductionism. Their moniker: HTRK; a diminutive of HATE ROCK TRIO.

Nostalgia' is the official re-release of their self recorded DIY debut, snapped up by the seminal Fire Records

Throughout 'Nostalgia' fractured analogue synths stab like panes of glass falling from their frames in a bombed-out post-apocalyptic warzone. Impassive vocals struggling to be heard through swathes of feedback and bludgeoning drums; dehumanised… another instrument fighting for survival against its' formidable aural adversaries.

Album to buy @ Rough Trade: HTRK - Nostalgia

HTRK are signed to Fire Records the same label as Bark Psychosis

Fire Records: HTRK - Nostalgia

HTRK - Nostalgia
(2007)
HTRK (formed 2003) are a mysterious three-piece from Melbourne who reside in Berlin and London. Inspired by the sounds and images of David Lynch, The Birthday Party and electronic artist Pita, HTRK effortlessly create music of sublime tension and beauty. Heavily processed and bathed in reverb, 'Nostalgia' is a collection of 7 live recordings from 2004. It was after 'Nostalgia' that Rowland S. Howard became interested in HTRK, eventually going on to produce their forthcoming debut album 'Marry Me Tonight', which will be released later this year.

Nostalgia was recorded with two microphones and an old tape deck, prior to their first tour of Sydney in 2004. Says Nigel, "We ran through our set and the performance was uncanny... we called it Nostalgia because of our hatred of bands and fans who suck the past dry, as well as our own guilty nostalgia for the nihilistic energies rampant in the 80s underground, and the strange role that the Tarkovsky film Nostalghia played in the earliest days of the band's creation up in the Macedon hills. It is in many ways our definitive introductory statement."

'...what those in the know call the Glamourous Neu Underground ...''
(20jazzfunkgreats)

''Ominous collusions of downtown basslines and ricochet beats (in bullet-time). Sound like, y'know, a motel room, a tyreprint curve in the rain, an alibi.''
(Plan B)

Slinky, sexy deep bass and synth throb with goth drippings from Berlin (by way of Melbourne). Like The Kills on the shit that killed Billie Holiday.

His musical style is difficult to classify; the Smalltown Supersound website includes the following description: 'On his records Kim Hiorthøy combines weird beats, lo-fi/leftfield electronics, field recordings, electro-acoustic sounds and samples, resulting in a sound all his own.

2 day Line Up details

* Finally UK commercial radio catches up with the BBC radio "Listen Again" concept !

Gcap launches catch-up service

Gcap Media has added a seven day catch-up service to its Xfm website, to be followed in the coming months by Capital Radio and Classic FM.

I am unsure if this service is just restricted to the UK? or is it available globally?

check: Xfm "The UK's New Music Radio Station" - unfortunately most of the station's output is confined to awful conformist songs based NME / Q magazine approved [mainstream] guitar rock or shoddy local British post-libertines-arctic monkeys-kasabian-the coral-razorlight clones - dreadful and ghastly.

However there are a few specialist shows including the John Kennedy X-Posure show.

Ex BBC 6 Music DJ Andrew Collins correctly attacks Xfm for their hideous new daytime concept - listeners selecting tracks from a predetermined playlist ! Where Did It All Go Right? Andrew Collins - Xfm Launch Xu: Radio To The Power Of U, Apparently

This years theme is "Back to Basics" and features a diverse range of artists who are not affraid to strip things back to their basic elements. Artists such as the ground breaking old school rave outfit Altern8, inject a solid dose of soul into the current "trend" for all things nu rave, whilst legendary french composer Jean Jacques Perrey shows us what happens when the ethos of "pop" is married to the usually funless world of classical modernism.

This year also sees the expansion of Nuart into a truly international affair with renowned artists from around the world invited to create one off pieces in the city's main museum of fine arts as well as the city's streets.

The event is situated in Stavanger on the West coast of Norway and takes place in various venues throughout the city.

Expect: friendly crowds, unique concerts & great club nights covering all aspects of progressive, alternative & electronic music and art.
