Tomasz Stanko Quartet - Lontano
New Tomasz Stanko Quartet album Lontano on ECM will be released on August 28th
Tomasz Stanko Quartet
Lontano
ECM 1980
Tomasz Stanko trumpet
Marcin Wasilewski piano
Slawomir Kurkiewicz double-bass
Michal Miskiewicz drums
Third installment in the sequence of exceptional quartet albums that began with “Soul of Things” and continued with “Suspended Night”. “This is the best one yet,” says trumpeter Stanko. “Everything about the process was creative. We changed the studio [recording in the South of France instead of Oslo], the band was in top form – we had just come off a long Asian tour. And by now I expect the unexpected when I record with Manfred, but I was really pleased with what came out of the session. Freer than the other albums, it says more about my roots.” Extended group improvisations sustain and develop the climate established by Stanko’s very soulful new ballads, and the group also delivers a new arrangement of Krzysztof Komeda’s “Kattorna” and a version of “Tale” - first heard on Tomasz’s ECM debut “Balladyna” more than 30 years ago.

indieworkshop.com report news of a debut album from Trentemøller: Danish producer Trentemøller to release debut titled The Last Resort due in October on Poker Flat Recordings
In October Poker Flat Recordings will release the debut record from Danish producer Anders Trentemøller entitled The Last Resort. On the album he plays such instruments as guitars, bass, celesta, glockenspiel, melodica and musicbox.

Guest musicians include Henrik Vibskov (accoustic drums), Mikael Simpson (distorted bass, guitar), Arnaud Donez (guitar, bass) and Thomas "DJ T.O.M." Bertelsen (Scratching).
Trentemoller on myspace has more info:
Hey Boys and Girls! My name is Anders Trentemoller, and I live in Copenhagen, Denmark. I am composing, producing and remixing, most of the time, under my last name Trentemoller. I have just finished my debut album, and it will hit the streets in september 2006! It's called The Last Resort. The album will show a new side of me for most of you. It's a very personal album, made not for the dancefloor but for all you dreamers, lovers and spacers out there. I'm so proud and happy about it, and I hope you will like it too. On the CD you can also find a bonus- CD with nearly all my singles released on Pokerflat and Audiomatique. PLUS there will be a vinyl editon with most of the tracks from the album for the vinyl junkies too! Recently: check out my remix of The Knife 'We share our mother's health'! It's out now!

Techcrunch profiles the: Technorati Relaunch
My analysis:
The Technorati homepage is still too cluttered. Search is the most important function, yet Technorati has a left side panel with minor features taking space up.
Solution, remove the left sided panel and switch it over to the right side. Therefore search would take up a more prominent and focused position on the homepage and improve user experience.

Update: BBC News present a guide to this year's Mercury Music Prize: The nominees
You can now read the Simon Frith chaired Judging Panel's pompous comments of the 12 shortlisted albums: Nationwide Mercury Prize
Update: BBC News report on the media & artist reaction: Dismay and delight over Mercury list
Amongst the artists whose albums that were entered but overlooked for the shortlist, include: Adem, Alex Smoke, Depeche Mode, Field Music, Kate Bush, Nine Horses, Tunng, Various Production, Vashti Bunyan, Neil Cowley Trio, Elbow and Pet Shop Boys.
Is this indicative of how predictable the Mercury shortlist has become:
all of the albums have been reviewed by The Guardian during the past year:
CD reviews: our critics' verdicts
13.01.2006: Arctic Monkeys, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
27.01.2006: Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan, Ballad of the Broken Seas
22.07.2005: Editors, The Back Room
07.07.2006: Guillemots, Through the Window Pane
02.09.2005: Richard Hawley, Coles Corner
19.05.2006: Hot Chip, The Warning
30.06.2006: Muse, Black Holes and Revelations
18.11.2005: Zoe Rahman, Melting Pot
18.11.2005: Lou Rhodes, Beloved One
02.06.2006: Scritti Politti, White Bread, Black Beer
03.02.2006: Sway, This Is My Demo
07.07.2006: Thom Yorke, The Eraser
Update: The Guardian: At a glance: the Mercury shortlist
On this blog, I made some Mercury predictions on what would be included in the shortlist, 12 selections + 12 outsiders
Out of the 24 predictions I selected, 9 were included in the 12 shortlist. 225 Albums were entered.
the 3 i didn't predict:
Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan - Ballad of the Broken Seas
[There were a few mentions for this on the interweb and On ILM. But Lanegan is not British, so it should have been refused entry in the first place.]
Zoe Rahman - Melting Pot
[It's difficult to predict the specialist jazz nominations, but many jazz critics heavily praised, the Neil Cowley Trio. Zoe Rahman's album only got 3 stars from the Guardian's expert / specialist jazz music critic]
listen to
Neil Cowley Trio on myspace
an impressive modern jazz piano group, similar to Sweden's E.S.T . Why was this album overlooked?
Lou Rhodes - Beloved One
[No one mentioned this album anywhere in terms of predictions. It didn't have any media buzz when it came out. The only big surprise on the nominations list]
The Mercury Prize Shortlist for 2006 is rather underwhelming and predictable.

Some Eligible Albums for the Mercury Music Prize 2006. i.e British or Irish Artists who released an album between July 25th 2005 and July 17th 2006.

Blogger, Sweeping The Nation makes shortlist predictions.

The Observer Review - 50 albums that changed music
Summer is the silly season in music journalism, statistically less albums are released in the Summer [June / July / August] compared to the Spring and Autumn.
There are not many high profile new albums to review, enter ...it's time for yet another wacky list. Only 7 people contributed to this Observer list, hardly a representative sample.
The Observer | Review | 50 albums that changed music
50 albums that changed music [according to 7 people at the Observer] Our panel: James Bennett, Kitty Empire, Dave Gelly, Lynsey Hanley, Sean O'Hagan, Elle J Small, Neil Spencer.
Fifty years old this month, the album chart has tracked the history of pop. But only a select few records have actually altered the course of music. To mark the anniversary, Kitty Empire pays tribute to a sublime art form, and our panel of critics argues for 50 albums that caused a revolution.
The list of 50
The Observer blog gives readers as chance to reply: Charting albums of influence
intro:
In a couple of weeks, the UK albums chart will be 50 years old. To mark the occasion, and celebrate one of the defining art forms of our time, we on Observer Review have put together a list of 50 albums which we think changed everything.
Are these the best 50 albums ever made? Not really. The biggest-selling? No, not quite. They are the ones that we reckon tilted the planet's axis just a tad, reinvented pop music, and made the last five decades that little bit more interesting, writes Kitty Empire.

Reminder, Triosk - the headlight serenade is finally released tomorrow in the UK on the leaf label.
Always attracting comparisons to the likes of Tortoise, The Necks, Cinematic Orchestra and Thelonius Monk, Triosk nonetheless orbit in a world of their own - bringing a lightness of touch and awareness of when enough-is-enough that is so oft missing in the over-indulged world of jazz.

Xfm Appoints Head of Network Music
Brand Republic report Xfm promotes Walsh to head of music position to coordinate the relationship between record labels and three Xfm stations Xfm London, Xfm Manchester and Xfm Scotland.
Xfm has appointed Mike Walsh, the former head of music for GCap North, to the newly created position of network head of music.
He will also take a larger role in formulating Xfm's music policy and brand identity across its London, Manchester and Scotland stations.
Interesting to note that Mike Walsh has previously been a radio plugger for Parlophone.
I disagree with the music policy & programming of Xfm, but this role does give an insight on how commercial radio operates. Endless advance playback meetings with key record labels to shape significant playlist decisions.

Susanna Karolina Wallumrød: Vocals
Morten Qvenild: Piano, Cembalo, Autoharp, Vibraphone, Church Organ and Keyboards
Susanna Wallumrød (27) has a unique way of making a song her own, and to fill the lyrics and melodies with the emotional content it requires. This was made crystal clear with her stunning interpretation of Dolly Parton´s classic ”Jolene”, recorded for the duo´s debut album ”List Of Lights and Buoys” (2004). A song covered by many artists, but seldom with such heartfelt sincerity. The same can be said of their version of ”Hallelujah”, one of the first songs they demoed and since long present in their live show, and now finally recorded for inclusion on ”Melody Mountain”. Known to turn venues so quiet you can hear grown people sob, it´s only one of a string of moving performances that make up this, their second album. In addition to Susanna´s moving vocal deliveries, Morten Qvenild´s (28) naked and to the bone approach is essential to the way this duo come across, both on record and in a live situasion.
The songs and their origins should be well known to many, with the exception of Matt Burt´s ”These Days”. Burt is an American artist who studied at the Trondheim art academy with Rune Grammofon house designer Kim Hiorthøy and Helge Sten, aka Deathprod.
Susanna Wallumrød was unknown before she formed the duo with Morten, but comes from a musical family, brother Christian being an ECM recording artist and brother Fredrik the drummer in now defunct rock band Span.
Morten Qvenild was a permanent member of Jaga Jazzist and a founder member of Shining. Now he is a member of Solveig Slettahjell Slow Motion Orchestra and has his own piano trio In The Country, who released their debut album ”This Was The Pace Of My Heartbeat” in 2005. A new album is expected later this year.

Cortney Tidwell - don't let stars keep us tangled up
Reminder, Cortney Tidwell releases her debut full album: don't let stars keep us tangled up tomorrow on Ever Records in the UK.
Utterly assured in its wide-screen scope, 'Don't Let Stars Keep Us Tangled Up' is straight into Top Ten Of The Year contention through its soaring take on euphoric melancholy, as Tidwell weaves an intoxicating blend of influences around her honeyed larynx. [Boomkat]
Reviewed @ Boomkat: cortney tidwell - don't let stars keep us tangled up
Almost criminally ignored on its release, Cortney Tidwell's eponymous debut EP gave us a glimpse of an alternative Nashville where country music was filtered through a kaleidoscope of jazz, shoegaze, and electronica; a pasture she has wisely decided to revisit on her jaw-dropping new record 'Don't Let Stars Keep Us Tangled Up'. Blessed with an ebb and flow that can't fail to draw you in, 'Don't Let Stars Keep Us Tangled Up' opens through the beatific and heartbreakingly tender composition of 'Eyes Are At The Billions', recalling the likes of Rickie Lee Jones, before all hell breaks loose mid-way through as a cavalcade of axe-wielding riffs crash the meadow and prove why Tidwell is so appealing; she's willing to take risks. From this rough and heady opening salvo, the comparatively straight-laced outlook of 'Pictures On The Sidewalk' is a sun-blushed acoustic thrum that keeps Tidwell's sugar-sweet (not sickly!) vocals heart achingly buoyant. With obvious comparisons centering around the likes of Liz Fraser, Bjork and Mazzy Star, it would be unfair and unrepresentative to suggest any of these were near the mark - and instead are best viewed as a signpost to the areas Tidwell's lambent larynx inhabits. With a crafty nod to Joy Division's 'Transmission', next song 'Missing Link' ups the Tidwell ante even further through an angelic compote of encroaching guitars and euphoric vocals - a mood that is brought into sharp contrast by the timorous electronics and sombre atmosphere of 'I Do Not Notice'. Elsewhere, 'Society' drafts in the formidable skills of Lambchop's William Tyler for a sleek collaboration, 'Our Time' is a flutter of spectral steel guitar and friable banjo, whilst 'The Tide' has cinematic grandeur etched all over it. Honestly; you need this record... End of.

120 Days previously known as The Beautiful People - and briefly: Sex Beat
Norwegian band 120 Days were previously called The Beautiful People, and briefly earlier this year Sex Beat
I previously blogged about them last year, when they were known as The Beautiful People and was impressed with their exotic hybrid electronic rock style.
Their debut album is due for release later this year, on Vice Recordings in the US and Smalltown Supersound in Norway.
A new track is available to listen on their myspace profile: Come out Come Down [See Link Above]
This is a monster of track, over 8 minutes long of sparkling electronic-rock that is similar to Empires & Dance/Sons & F/SFC era Simple Minds mixed with 90s band One Dove
120 Days are
Ådne Meisfjord (vocals, guitar, keyboards)
Kjetil Ovesen (keyboards)
Arne Stöy Kvalvik (drummachine, effects)
Jonas Dahl (bass)
Recent Background info on 120 Days
Early in 2004 the band released their critically acclaimed first EP titled Sedated Times on the small Oslo label Public Demand Records (see AMG review under). Late 2004 they released their second EP, this time a selftitled 5 track EP. This EP caused quite a stir in Norway. And after the band`s gig at By:Larm in Norway (the Norwegian equivalent to South By Southwest) the band sent shockwaves through a lot of industry people, and the gig resulted in the band being booked to both the Reading and Leeds Festival and the Sonar Festival, and this after two Norway only releases. Also the New York label Vice Records (Bloc Party, The Streets, Death From Above 1979) was deeply impressed by the gig and started chasing the band. Meanwhile the band continued to prepare for their debut album. By this time the band had found their home with the Norwegian label Smalltown Supersound (Jaga Jazzist, Lindstrøm, Kim Hiorthøy, Bjørn Torske).
Their selftitled debut album was produced by the band themselves and recorded in Oslo`s Crystal Canyon studios in January and February 2006. The album was mixed by Jørgen Sir Dupermann Træen and the band in Duper Studio, Bergen, in April 2006.
120 Days debut album will be released in the autumn of 2006 on Vice Records in USA licensed from Smalltown Supersound. The European deal is not yet closed.
120 Days will be performing at two key Norwegian music festivals:
Aug 10 2006
Øyafestival - Oslo
Sep 9 2006
Numusic Festival - Stavanger

Mary Anne Hobbs - new BBC Radio1 show details
On the dubstepForum.com Mary Anne Hobbs on her future on Radio 1: Mary Anne Hobbs - new BBC Radio1 show details - my show is moving to Thursday nights 2-4am
Shock ! 2am - 4am slot ! it will be even more of a "Listen Again" slot for Brits, but for East Coast Americans the show will start at 9pm, ideal !
What is strange what will happen in the 12midnight - 2am Slot? 1 hour music, plus those "One Click" shows ?
my show is moving to Thursday nights 2-4am.. which is actually a far better slot for most of us.. coz we're already out & about and gearing up for the weekend...
the new show will launch Thursday Septemer 28th, it's just gonna be called Mary Anne Hobbs... my mission remains exactly the same... to bring the finest dark experimental electronic music on earth to you, first...
it's a whole new dawn for the show... i have so much exciting news coming your way in the next couple of weeks about what's in the fame for autumn... and it goes without saying.. i'd love to have you with me...
if you got questions... hit me up here...

Micah - Everything
Released tomorrow on Matthew Herbert's Accidental Records label an album by Micah.
Boomkat: Micah - Everything
DOTSHOP.SE: Micah: Everything
"It's not often you meet a six feet black man in a kilt, and even less usual to find that he’s the son of a Panamanian missionary who has played with legendary New York jazz musicians – and some semi-legendary New York hip hop dudes. This is as fresh and inspiring as modern music gets." // Matthew Herbert, Accidental Records
“Everything” - the debut album produced by Brazilian legend Arto Lindsay and harnessing the creative juices of Micah Gaugh, a Panamanian-born, Texas bred musical genius - channels Tricky, Prince and Cocteau Twins into some utterly original avant-garde R’n’B musical soundscapes. Stark pop songs abound, where Micah’s soulful vocals are spun with electronic sugar and stripped back reggae b-lines, and sweet melodies are undershot with background menace.

Radio 1 - Schedule Changes at Radio 1
Radio 1 announce New Specialist Schedule and BBC Press Office report Radio 1 announces major overhaul of specialist schedule
BBC Radio 1 is completely revamping its specialist evening schedule which comes into effect on Monday September 25th
So these are the changes:
Colin Murray is going to present a brand new music show Monday to Thursday from 10pm-12am.
In New Music We Trust 9pm - 10pm Monday - Thursday
The introduction of four In New Music We Trust shows hosted by some of Radio 1's key musical experts. Running Monday to Thursday from 9pm the In New Music We Trust shows will act as one stop guides to everything that's happening in a particular genre fronted by the experts in that field.
New DJs Join Radio 1: The signing of brand new specialist talent Eddie Halliwell and Trophy Twins
Eddie Halliwell New signing Eddie plays the freshest records from the clubs that week
Trophy Twins: Another new signing seeing the clubbing generation through the early hours
Other Changes:
# The 1Xtra showcase: A selection of the very best music from 1Xtra
# Your Show with Annie Mac (title TBC): By the audience for the audience
# Annie's Mix Tape: Radio 1's multi genre mix show fronted by Annie Mac
# Radio 1's Future Mix (title tbc): a multi genre show featuring the hottest new DJ's
DJs Leaving:
Chris Coco and Fergie will leave the station in September. Fergie will continue to put together Essential Mixes for Radio 1
More info on the changes at Radio 1:
BBC NEWS report Colin and Edith radio show to end
MediaGuardian.co.uk report Radio 1 drops Lamacq's show - the changes mean that Lammo's Monday night 4 hour slot has been dropped.
Breezeblock show moving to new slot:
Other Radio 1 DJs moving around the schedule as part of the revamp of specialist evening and overnight programming include Mary Anne Hobbes, who is shifting from her Monday night Breezeblock show to a new Thursday night slot featuring experimental dance music.
Annie Nightingale to move to a new slot:
Veteran DJ Annie Nightingale, who currently hosts a show between 1am and 3am on Friday morning, is also expected to move to a new berth in the Radio 1 lineup.
MediaGuardian.co.uk: Murray and Bowman split
My Analysis of the changes:
Colin Murray
It's rather strange that Radio 1 are changing back to a show at the 10pm - 12pm slot that once John Peel roamed in, until they forced him into the 11pm - 1am slot.
This slot makes sense as more people are likely to listen to the full 2 hours. However I don't know what to make of:
Colin will be playing music that reflects the wide ranging specialist tastes of Radio 1's young audience and will focus on all of the most exciting and exhilarating aspects of youth culture including a regular documentary feature. [from BBC press office]
Will Colin Murray go beyond the typical high profile radio pluggers & NME hyped terrain? Can his jokey light hearted style suit a late night slot?
9pm - 10pm Monday - Thursday - In New Music We Trust:
I am guessing that the ex One World show DJs will fill these slots? plus Bobby Friction & Nihal? or maybe the lock up show?
What happens Post-midnight in the midnight - 2am slot? I am guessing that 4 slots will be:
Annie Mac [Monday?] multi genre mix show
Rock Show [Tuesday] this show brought forward 1 hour?
Trevor Nelson or Annie Nightingale [Wednesday?] or maybe this show moves elsewhere?
Breezeblock [Thursday] according to mediaguardian
What will happen in the 2am - 4am slot for night workers / insomniacs / and listen again audience?
I am guessing that One Click shows will continue at 3am, and maybe 2am - 3am slot will include shows such as:
the Radio 1's Future Mix (title tbc): a multi genre show featuring the hottest new DJ's
Your Show with Annie Mac (title TBC): By the audience for the audience
