Metal Storm present the nominations stage of the Metal Storm Awards 2005 - an impressive overview of 2005 releases in various Metal genres.
Ironically, a lot of good albums means a lot of headache for Staff members when it comes to our annual Awards. This year we had to write over 200 short descriptions for the nominees - please excuse the literary quality of some of them, the process was rather hasty.
The voting will run for one month, until the end of February, and in the first days of March the results will be published. To avoid multiple votes by some overly enthusiastic fans, only registered members can vote. You can register here.
Nominations stage:
Best albums by genre:
Alternative Metal
Avantgarde Metal
Black Metal
Death Metal
Doom Metal
Folk Metal
Gothic Metal
Grindcore
Heavy Metal
Industrial Metal
Melodeath/Gothenburg
Power Metal
Progressive Metal
Suomi Metal

RTQE Best of 2005 list
RTQE present 15 of the Top Ten Recordings of 2005
This is the decidedly unscientific listing of engaging, magnificent, or otherwise important recordings that crossed the RTQE aural transom at varying velocities and amplitudes during 2005. It is inherently personal, unfair, and exclusive.
RTQE:
RTQE is a Sunday evening program of electronic, experimental, classical, and improvised conduct for survivors or the 20th century hosted by Gregory Taylor which has aired since 1986 on Sunday evenings on WORT-FM in Madison, Wisconsin.

Metal Storm interview Klimt 1918
Klimt 1918: Italian indie/wave/metal/post rock band, they released their sophomore effort last year, the critically acclaimed “Dopoguerra”
Context
statement: The range of styles that one can find in Klimt 1918 music is amazing, from Katatonia to U2, from The Cure to Anathema, seems like the perfect marriage from mainstream eighties pop music and nineties Metal music. Are you really fans of both musical styles? Are you planning to lean forward any of these styles in the future, in other words, can we expect a heavier of softer Klimt 1918 in future releases?
A: Oh yes for sure!! I am totally agree with you. Our post-modern way to compose songs putting together many influences both from 80’s, 90’s and 00’s music.

New Music Magazine: Rock-A-Rolla
rock-a-rolla, issue 1 : jan/feb 2006 [Available at newsagents in the UK or order at Boomkat, see link]
First issue of this brand new UK indie-mag chock-full of features on Khanate, Melt Banana, 13&God, Bohren & Der Club Of Gore, Wold Eyes, Merzbow, Ipecac – plus loads of reviews and the like. A bit awkward on the layout front, but a very promising start indeed....
Official website: http://www.rock-a-rolla.com/
Welcome to the official website of ROCK-A-ROLLA, a bi-monthly UK publication covering the best in avant-rock, noise, metal, and variations thereof. Over the course of the next few months ROCK-A-ROLLA aims to be your one and only stop for information, news and views on artists changing the face of music.
NOTE: ROCK-A-ROLLA magazine welcomes contributions from talented writers and photographers.
Shock a new UK based magazine that is NOT trying to copy NME & Q ! Cross reference with the numerous failures in the 00s.
Rock-A-Rolla seems to fill a specialist niche, I wish them all the best for the future.

Ultimate Metal Forum interview Frantic Bleep: Frantic Bleep - To Bleep or Not to Bleep?
Frantic Bleep are a band of unquantifiable elements, you just can't be sure what goes into the making of this kind of music. Original, epic, bonkers and endearing are a few words that sum up the things I feel in relation to the Frantics. You may or may not already be familiar with this excellent band, regardless, you should read on and find out more! I spoke to guitarist/bassist/literary addict Eywin Sundstrom to get the latest info...

When will the next TV on the Radio album be released and what will it be called ?
Will Underworld release a new album in 2006, because Metacritic list early 2007. Surely this can't be so !

Forthcoming on Type records: Sickoakes - Seawards
Based in Stockholm, Sweden; Sickoakes are a six piece instrumental rock band and Seawards is their long awaited debut release. Since the release of an early recording of ‘Wedding Rings & Bullets in the Same Golden Shrine’ on the Pleasedosomething net-label some years ago there has been a bubbling interest in their next move, so it is an absolute pleasure for us to present their full album, and what an album it is. Taking the finest fragments of the ailing post-rock genre, and infusing this with vibrant orchestral flourishes, Seawards is a slow burning triumph.

The Blue Aeroplanes - Swagger Reissue Also New 2006 Album
The Blue Aeroplanes will reissue their classic 1990 album: Swagger tomorrow in a deluxe edition.
This is a fantastic album and one of my personal fav albums of the 90s, the way the albums flows like a river and the passionate vocal style.
Received with critical delirium in its day - Select quite reasonably called it "total poetic guitar bejewelled rock'n'roll folk art let's dance godstar unalloyed alcoholic genius" - Swagger remains a thing of rasping beauty, raw power and delicate frailty, both very much of its time and utterly timeless in its energy, artistry and ambition.

Below is the overall top 30 derived from each staff member's top 20 of the year. Within each staff members list is their best DVD of 2005, best new band, greatest hopes for 2006, and of course their disappointments for 2005. As always, some restrictions are placed on our lists. The top albums are for North American releases from 2005 that all full albums (no EP's or demos). They also have to be new studio albums for 2005, not re-recordings, re-releases, or live material. For best new band, the restriction is that the band's debut full-length album (not including demos or EP's) has to be a 2005 release.
