Indie For Dummies: MUSIC BLOG TOP 100 ALBUM 2005 - polled music blogggers for their top 10s.

Some selective positions:

#1 - SUFJAN STEVENS: ILLINOISE [Rough Trade] - 555 pt. - 75 votes

The results suggests that Pitchfork has significant influence on listening interests of many. However I wonder what sort of narrow demographics most of these bloggers fall into, I bet most are between 21-34 and men and primarily into Pitchfork/ Metacritic rated music i.e in the top 100 there are [too] many trad songs indie rock / americana type artists. Notice the absence of jazz and metal for example.

Exclusive - Patrick Wolf Signs to Loog, Working on Third Album

Patrick Wolf has signed to Loog/Polydor and is currently working on a new album with Austrian sound engineer Patrick Pulsinger

Press Release via Mingo PR

Patrick Wolf signs to Loog

Loog are delighted to announce the newest signing to their roster, Patrick Wolf.

...

Loog head James Oldham said: “We’re delighted to sign an artist as unique and driven as Patrick. We’ve been a fan of his for a long time, so it’s fantastic that we’re finally going to get to work with him. He’s someone who’s going to have a long and extraordinary career in music.”

And the next stage of that career begins immediately as Patrick has already begun work on his third LP “The Magic Position” in Vienna with engineer Patrick Pulsinger. The process continues in the new year as Patrick heads to New York where various luminaries will take part in the recording. No one knows yet precisely what the new record will sound like, but it’s certain to be Patrick’s most ambitious album to date.

Patrick had this to say: “After much label fever at the end of my tour this year, I found myself very much safe and at home with Loog/Polydor records. It is really exciting to now have the structures in place so that I can create all the work I want to create, that it will be heard and promoted the right way, and perhaps my days of living like a tramp are over. Perhaps. Now, all is looking good, I have a lot of music to make, keys to hit, strings to break and now am recording my third work. Extreme thank yous to all that have stood by me on the long and winding dirt track to now. You're all still with us - magic is alive.”

Patrick Wolf will be debuting songs from his new album at a soon-to-be-announced show in March in London.

iLiKETRAiNS are new-ish band from Leeds, imagine Peter Murphy fronting Sigur Ros

The track: A ROOK HOUSE FOR BOBBY - just listened to this track on Xfm spun by John Kennedy.

Wow this band have massive potential, dramatic/ epic/ orchestral music like Peter Murphy wrapped up in the epic splendour of Sigur Ros. Other inspirations I detect: Red House Painters, Nick Cave, Joy Division, TV on the Radio, Kitchens of Distinction, Explosions in the Sky, The God Machine - you get my drift !

iLiKETRAiNS are definately one's to watch in 2006 !

delayed reaction by a year !

"It's past time for my latest best-of-year list. I've been procrastinating a bit, see, because 2004 was such an amazingly brilliant year for new music that I would have a hard time making a top-20 list, much less my customary top 10. Nevertheless, here's my best shot. For the newer readers, note that this is a best of 2004, not 2005 ? the extra year allows for a bit more perspective as well as a chance to catch up on releases that passed me by originally. "

disquiet present disquiet: 2005, in review

Because of the enormous amount of music released each year, it is absurd to single out a handful of recordings as 'the best,' or even as 'my favorites.' But also because of the enormous amount of music released each year, the exercise can be helpful. This is my favorite music of 2005, broken into two categories: commercial recordings and free downloads. And there's a short bit at the end about the year in film soundtracks.

Speculation that Music Zone and Fopp may acquire further MVC shop locations.

Temp Solution for 2005 Music Lists - RawSugar

del.icio.us is still down at the mo.

So, I have activated RawSugar as a temp solution to store 2005 Best of Lists: temp - djmartian on RawSugar

Back in September I imported my del.icio.us links to RawSugar - a social search engine powered by user contributions

RawSugar

Unlike del.icio.us, RawSugar offers full text search.

I would use RawSugar more frequently:

* if they offered a del.icio.us sync
* have a User Interface similar to del.icio.us or that of Jots
* offer a 100 bookmark view.

The Observer Music Monthly Top 100 Albums of 2005 + Top 50 Readers List

The Observer | OMM | Countdown: the OMM top 100 albums

The Observer Music Monthly have gone for a Top 100 this year which is good to see as Top 50 countdowns are unable to scope the year IMHO. Their 2005 list is certainly the most diverse I have seen by a printed mainstream publication so far. However the quality control is rather scatty trying to appeal to a broad readership.

Anthony & the Johnsons takes top slot. I don't like the texture of his eccentric vocal style and the backing music just does nothing for me. But this album is doing rather well in end of year lists.

Some Highlights:

95 Echo & the Bunnymen
94 Lightning Bolt
89 Wayne Shorter Quartet
85 Acoustic Ladyland
82 Brian Eno
75 My Morning Jacket
74 The Editors
69 Elbow
67 Whitey
61 Les Georges Leningrad [that's a 2004 album folks]
60 Pat Metheny Group
58 Solveig Slettahjell
54 Animal Collective
53 Vitalic
52 Sigur Ros
50 St Etienne
41 Ali Farka Toure and Toumani Diabate
36 Ariel Pink
34 Konono No 1
31 Arild Andersen Group
27 Kate Bush
24 Manu Katche
14 LCD Soundsytem
13 Roots Manuva
12 Polar Bear
10 The Arcade Fire

Amongst the Hundred there are some strange choices that are completely laughable: this lot would be more suitable on a worst of 2005 list:

100 Rolling Stones - AOR slosh, 96 Hard-Fi - simpleton chav britpop, 90 Goldie Lookin Chain - welsh comedy rap, 86 Charlotte Church - pop pap, 78 50 Cent - lame rap, 77 Darkness - comedy rawk, 49 Chemical Brothers - dated clunky beats, 38 Babyshambles - shambolic tuneless tripe, 37 Robbie Williams - chav Mainstream pop rock, 16 Oasis - plodding rubbish trad rock.

Observer Music Monthly also give an insight into what music is popular in Britain in 2005: Your top 50 albums

The list reads like a combination of Uncut/ Mojo/ NME/ Q / The Word, 6 Music and Later with Jools Holland. I guess the people who voted were primarily in the 20 to 45 age group.

The Arcade Fire was the most popular album, Kate Bush [12], Sigur Ros [13], Elbow [18], LCD Soundsystem [21], Doves [27]

LookLater is a new private bookmarking system that has some cool features.

About Section: way to easily and quickly store private bookmarks to interesting links found while browsing.

Instant searchable bookmarks in your own FREE and PRIVATE on-line archive

# Bookmark links, pages or images
# Automatically save context with each bookmark
# Search in titles or context or browse by date or site
# Tag bookmarks and import your existing tags
# No software to install, just a bookmarklet
# Integrates with del.icio.us, Google, eBay and more

So what are the Pros of LookLater

* Fast server, changes can be made quickly.
* Interface is flexible with a quick links view section.
* The User Interface is smart and easy on the eye.
* Ideal for a quick links dump i.e "to read" later, therefore ideal for bloggers and users of social bookmarking systems [such as del.icio.us] to pre-sort info.
* Features include a direct link to del.icio.us, so you can easily re-tag any bookmarked item if you use that system.
* Ideal for storing frequently used links if you use multiple PCs.
* Are your bookmarks/ favorites on your browser getting clogged up ? LookLater could be the answer to your problems.

Private: no user name associated with the URL, so your privacy can be preserved.

There are Some Drawbacks

* Chunky text size, not compact enough compared to many bookmarking systems.
* No automatic tagging when you bookmark a page, however tags can be quickly added afterwards.
* The context box auto saves the initial keywords of a website. Often you need to edit this.
* Features: where the link came from. Who cares ? no option to hide this feature.

Overall I would recommend Looklater as an ideal compliment to existing systems such as del.icio.us and your existing browser bookmarks/ favorites links.

It's hard to believe that another year has just about passed us, and with
only a few weeks left in 2005, we're excited to bring you our Year End
Recap. This annual list is a compilation of our picks for the notable
releases of the year. Many of these reviews will be familiar to you, as
some of the descriptions were culled from previous Other Music Updates;
however, a few titles which might have been overlooked earlier in the year
appear here for the first time. While a couple of the albums featured in this
recap may be unavailable right now, we will announce any restocks in
future issues of the Update and on our website. We hope that you have as
much fun reading this list as we had compiling it.

Next week, we'll be sending out our final Update of the year and, soon
after, our annual Staff Top Tens and the list of 2005's best sellers. In the
meantime, please visit our website's homepage for any notable new
release that may arrive before the New Year.

Issue 58 of Earplug

DECEMBER 8 - DECEMBER 21
Earplug is a twice-monthly email magazine, delivering a handpicked selection of news, sounds, videos, and original features to the international electronic-music community.

While most of the media world dives headlong into best-of-2005 recaps, we keep the goods coming. After all, killer albums are still streaming down the pipe, leftfield mixes continue to show how established genres evolve far from their known centers, and - as Richie Hawtin tells us - technology never takes a break.

MARK CLIFFORD & SIMON KEALOHA - Running Taper / CALIKA - Small Talk Kills Me

REVIEWS

ALOG - Catch That Tottem! (1998-2005)
Norwegian duo Alog follow the release of their third album, Miniature, earlier this year, with this fascinating collection of rare tracks.

ANOTHER ELECTRONIC MUSICIAN - Use
Another Electronic Musician’s Jase Rex follows a series of compilation appearances with his debut album on which he attempts to fully develop his blend of digitalia and narcotic electro-dub beats.

THE BOATS - We Made This For You
Second album for The Boats, We Made This For You offers a series of miniature scenes built around sounds sourced from a single piano.

COCTEAU TWINS - Lullabies To Violaine
Essential release from 4AD to coincide with their twenty-fifth anniversary, Lullabies To Violaine collects the integral singles and EPs released by the Cocteau Twins during their sixteen-year career.

DEAF CENTER - Pale Ravine
Follow-up to Deaf Center’s debut EP released earlier this year, Pale Ravine shows a broader musical and atmospheric scope.

DESORMAIS - Dead Letters To Lost Friends / AVIA GARDNER - More Than Tongue Can Tell
Two very different releases from Quebec City-based imprint Intr.version. While Desormais distill a jazz-influenced blend of post rock, Avia Gardner debut investigates classical-infused electronic formations.

FOUR TET - Everything Ecstatic DVD / CARIBOU - Marino: The Videos
While the Four Tet DVD is an audio-visual version of his album of the same title released earlier this year, Marino collects on one DVD the integral of the videos used by Caribou during his recent tour.

HULK - Silver Thread Of Ghosts
The first full-length effort from Dublin-based Hulk, Silver Thread Of Ghosts combines field recordings, electronics and acoustic instrumentations into a stunning collection of haunting melodies and atmospheres.

ICARUS - Carnivalesque
With their latest offering, published on their own imprint, British experimental duo Icarus continue to challenge and entertain as they push the boundaries of their visionary sound further into uncharted territories.

JUDITH JUILLERAT - Soliloquy
Debut release for French chanteuse Judith Juillerat, Soliloquy combines digital synthesizers, beat boxes, guitars and piano into a soundtrack that, without any computer in sight, ensures it is her music that is heard and not her software.

DAVID SHEA - The Book Of Scenes
American experimental composer David Shea returns with a far-reaching collection of short musical scenes.

SKALPEL - Konfusion
Polish duo Skalpel return with their second slice of processed Eastern European jazz with added breaks, and this time, they present a much darker, seedier and soulful vision of late night smoky grooves.

UM - Giraffe (Refined) / ASCOLTARE - Fatty Parts For A Good Match
Split LP featuring fifteen tracks from UM and one long collage from Ascoltare. Strictly limited and utterly fun.

WON - A Forest
Won is the solo project of Paris-based Sbastien Llinares, and this, his second album, proves to be a truly inspiring piece of work.
