BBC - Radio 2 - Gothic Music Documentary: this Saturday

reminder: BBC - Radio 2 - The G-Word

The G-Word

Saturday 28 February 2009
1900-2000

In 1979, a dark and moody sound started to emerge from the roots of punk and glam rock. ‘Professional ex-goth’ Andrew Collins speaks to key musicians about the emergence of goth rock, and attempts to dispel some of the genre's myths along the way.

interviews:

Andrew (pictured above in his goth heyday) speaks to those who began the post punk exploration of all things darkly glamorous – Siouxsie Soux and Steve Severin of the Banshees, Peter Hook of Joy Division, the original Batcave regulars such as Specimen, and Bauhaus - a Northampton-based band, whose emergence on the post-punk scene helped shape the genre.

Jono El Grande

2009 album: Rune Grammofon RCD 2084 - Jono El Grande: Neo Dada

”Neo Dada” is an album brimming with musical adventure, odd turns, colourful combinations of sounds and instruments, complex signatures and a good portion of pure joy, all mysteriously sugared with melodic hooks that will stick to your brain like any annoying pop tune, but in a good way. There are elements from the Canterbury and Rock In Opposition scenes and traces of artists such as Frank Zappa, Henry Cow, Magma and Gentle Giant, but Jono has used his time since the previous album well, and taken large steps when it comes to establishing a strong musical signature. The instrumentations and arrangements are also more adventurous, there are more rock sonics and Jono has succesfully picked up the guitar again.
