  The Race - Ice Station

Another excellent discovery this week ! The Race

Chicago's The Race released an album: Ice Station this month [May 15th] on flameshovel records. The Race include Joshua Eustis from Telefon Tel Aviv

Their grandoise epic art-pop-rock sound recalls these esteemed artists: The Go-Betweens, The Woodentops, The Notwist, Mobius Band, Furniture, Xiu Xiu.

Listen to 4 new tracks on myspace: www.myspace.com/therace

A crisp modern production, interesting sound arrangements, an addictive rhythmic beat. The title track Ice Station reminds me so much of The Woodentops meets The Go-Betweens

Those that enjoyed The Notwist - Neon Golden [Neon Golden by The Notwist : Reviews and Ratings - Rate Your Music] album in 2002 would love The Race as they share a similar quirky melodic electronic art-pop-rock sound.

Flameshovel Records: The Race

Current line up of The Race (as described by Craig Klein): Craig Klein - vocals, guitar: See above. Alfredo Nogueira - guitar, vocals: From New Orleans, LA. (Al)Fredo moved here after the hurricane. He has a band called Endian, recently did a soundtrack for the film Low and Behold, plays with all sorts of people in Chicago and might be the greatest chef in the world of rock and roll. Joshua Eustis - keyboard, vocals: Also from New Orleans. One half of Telefon Tel Aviv, Recording Engineer, Producer of all kind of projects, DJ and tech support. Josh is also a master of impressions. ItÕs uncanny. Jeremy Parker - bass: From Chicago. One of my oldest friends. He showed me my first guitar chord way back when and has played with me for several years now. Kevin Duneman - drums: The pride and joy of Waverly, Iowa. Kevin has played on many records and toured with a lot of bands - L'altra, Telefon Tel Aviv, Slicker, Early Day Miners and Ativin to name a few. Most people know Kevin is a great dancer, but they donÕt know he was the winner of dance-off at a place called the UNI Dome.

For UK readers the album is available at Boomkat: The Race - Ice Station

The Angelic Process - Weighing Souls With Sand

This is a key defining album of 2007 ! The Angelic Process - Weighing Souls With Sand

The Angelic Process - Weighing Souls With Sand

Weighing Souls With Sand by The Angelic Process : Reviews and Ratings - Rate Your Music

On myspace: The Angelic Process the track Million Year Summer from the new album: Weighing Souls With Sand is phenomenal, an engulfing vortex of swirling atmospherics, powerful heavy sludgey droning soundscapes. This is grade A+ music that sonically transcends.

The track is like putting Neurosis, Isis, Sigur Ros, My Bloody Valentine, Xinlisupreme, Sunn O))), Swans and Jesu in a sonic blender- i.e a combination of ambient sludge metal, shoegazer, noise rock and post-rock.

A brief, but prominent review of the album in the monthly Show No Mercy column at Pitchfork:

Pitchfork Feature: Column: Show No Mercy

The Angelic Process: Weighing Souls With Sand [Profound Lore]
Great, shoegazing husband/wife duo from Georgia who make epic doom with fragility, lots of ambient prettiness, sustain: You can hear both Swans and My Bloody Valentine in "Million Year Summer"-- and not just because the one-sheet name checks them. The Angelic Process are one of those groups, like Jesu (who you can hear in the vocal treatment of "The Resonance Of Goodbye") that could certainly enjoy a real crossover into more indie waters. (For instance, how about that Sigur Rós sound on "Dying in A-Minor"?)

For US readers available to order at Midheaven: The Angelic Process - Weighing Souls With Sand

***Formed in 2001, and hailing from Athens Georgia, the husband-and-wife duo of K.ANGYLUS and MDRAGYNFLY have been known to create some of the most mesmerizing and moving music within this specialized musical realm. Garnering already a huge response with the 2006 reissue of their Coma Waering masterpiece (Paradigms Recordings), a recording that is actually four years old, Profound Lore presents that album's follow-up, Weighing Souls With Sand. The overall emotional pedigree that Weighing Souls With Sand presents is simply overwhelming, and utterly suffocating. Sound-wise picture a wall-of-sound through the fuzzy celestial grace of My Bloody Valentine, the tribal ritualistic pulsations of Neurosis, the emotional fervor and bloodletting of Swans, and the powerful grace of Jesu, and you'll get a glimpse of what THE ANGELIC PROCESS offer. And then some. STREET DATE - 5/15/2007

Shriekback

New album alerted via: :::::DARLA.COM v3.0....new releases:::::

SHRIEKBACK - Glory Bumps CD (Malicious Damage (UK): MD623

EXCLUSIVE. We're very proud to announce the arrival of Shriekback's eleventh album, and their second on Malicious Damage [following 2005's highly acclaimed Cormorant]. Glory Bumps is in many ways more recognisably the descendant of Shriekback's mid-80's 'alt-rock' classic Oil and Gold than any since. Anthems, hooligan choruses, big guitars, brass, a smattering of Psychobilly and, as usual, shed-loads of words. Glory Bumps has a curious tangential relationship with Barry Andrews' and Martyn Barker's recent improvised album Monstrance, a collaboration with XTC's Andy Partridge - Glory Bumps uses a number of loops created from the Monstrance album ['because they were there'] as well as Martyns' inimitable live drums and real-time guitar contributions from Andy. Barry co-produces with Stuart Rowe, who was one of the engineers from Monstrance. However there is no doubt that this is a Shriekback album 100% - as you will hear. Wendy Partridge who has sung backing vocals on every Shriekback album since 1986 features as does Barry's son Finn Andrews (of The Veils) who lends his intense vocals to the happy-clappy title track. The album's title is a reference to the goosebumps experienced by fundamentalist Christians when the amount of misery prevalent in the world presages, or so they believe, their abrupt assimilation into the bosom of their Lord although we suspect that, on the day of the Rapture, Shriekback will not be amongst them. PERSONNEL Barry Andrews: vocals, keyboards, Finn Andrews: backing vocals, Martyn Barker: drums and percussion, Andy Partridge: guitars, Catharine Shrubshall: brass and woodwind, Mark the Harp: blues harp, Ben Smith: Trombone, Stuart Rowe: guitars, Finn Wilkinson & Mia Griffiths: kids choir Produced by Barry Andrews & Stuart Rowe, Mixed & mastered by Stuart Rowe CD in embossed gold foil pack with lyric sheets tracklisting: Glory Bumps, The Bride Stripped Bare, Bittersweet, Hooray for Everything, Amaryllis in the Sprawl, Squanderer, Mahalia, Burying the Bunny, Yarg 7, Devils' Onions.

Introducing Norway's: Monomen - New Wave Inspired Electronic-Rock

Monomen: www.myspace.com/tr707

Norway's Monomen will release their debut album on May 21st on the Norwegian label Trust Me Records

A new track from the album: Drum of Glass can be listened to on myspace. A supreme slice of new wave inspired electronic rock. Once you have listened to it once you want to hit replay again and again.

a crisp production, dramatic vocals, bass guitar, rippling synths

Reference points: early Simple Minds, Magazine, John Foxx, New Order, The Comsat Angels, The Sound, The Opposition, Modern English.

On their myspace profile: Influences

StanleyKubrickCabaretVoltaireGiorgioMoroders(mustache)
SoftCellGy!beDevoThechameleonsNeworderWireGangOfFour
SlowdiveJoydivisionClusterMagazineBroderdanielBigBlackNeu!Pixies
SuperNintendoBladerunnerUnderworld etfckingcetera.

Monomen are so young I believe the band members are only 18 years old, yet their confident electronic-rock sound is accomplished as say a band such as Trans Am with over a decades worth of recording experience.

Monomen:

Kristian/vocal-synthesizer-guitar
Kim/bass-synthesizer
Tobias/guitar-synthesizer-TR-führer
Vidar/guitar-drumpads

Kristian Rangnes, vocalist and (probable) head-of-style-council in Monomen, describes the band as four friends who have hung out, picked up playing their respective instruments over their young lives, plugged in and started jamming. Kristian (who also plays the guitar as well as his beloved vintage Roland synthesizers) is accompanied by Kim Skråmo (bass and synthesizers), Tobias Kristiansen (guitar, synthesizers and drums) and Vidar Torget (guitar).

Norwegian music blogger: For the Eardrums: New songs by Monomen is also impressed with Monomen

With Monomen's obvious talent they should strive to follow fellow Norwegian electronic rockers 120 Days with greater international recognition.

If I was an A&R scout for a label such as Mute Records I would sign Monomen for UK and North American licensing deals today !

Radio - News - BBC Radio gets new popular music controller - Digital Spy

Lesley Douglas has been appointed controller, BBC popular music in addition to her current post as controller for BBC Radio 2 and 6 Music.

How she has achieved this promotion is rather strange. 6 Music is underwhelming, rather lacklustre with a blando duplicated playlist plus a conformist and over familiar safe selection of 70s/80s/90s music.

What's wrong with 6 Music is weak creative leadership at the top and Lesley Douglas is where the problem lies.

De Meyer joins programmer Len Lemeire (Implant) and drummer Jan D'Hooghe (Viva La Fete) in 32Crash. The trio, whose debut, Humanity is set for a June release from Alpha Matrix. The EP, which features remixes from Front 242 and others, is a concept-based piece of sci-fi futurism that's probably best left described by the label:

Prins Thomas

Interview: PRINS THOMAS: Fact Magazine

Prins Thomas, real name Thomas Hermansen, first came to our attention, and probably yours, through his collaborations with fellow Norwegian Hans-Peter Lindstrom. Their self-titled album of 2005 both pre-empted and precipitated the disco/Balearic revival which is now so all-enveloping, and this summer sees the arrival of ‘Reinterpretations’ – which, you may already have gathered, is a suite of reworkings and alternative versions of the tracks which featured on the original LP.

Virus / Ved Buens Ende

BLABBERMOUTH.NET - VED BUENS ENDE Is 'Dead And Buried For Good'

Carl-Michael "Czral" Eide comments:

"As for myself, I am finished writing the material for the next VIRUS album. It will contain much of the material meant for what was to become the next VED BUENS ENDE record that I wrote.

"VIRUS is very much in the same vein as VBE. The same style and genre, at least in regards to the experimental parts of what we did back in the 'Written in Waters' days. It's allmost like a continuation of VBE.

"We'll start the recordings quite soon. I hope it'll be finished early winter this year. Or late autumn. Maybe out in January '08. We're signing a deal with Season Of Mist Records.

Note expect another update tomorrow.
