Dave Clarke
New Dave Clarke mix compilation
CLARKE, DAVE: I Love Techno 2007 CD (MM 030CD) : OUT 11/06/2007
Press release via FE email:
It's clash of the techno titans as the globally renowned I Love Techno event and Dave Clarke bring it on for 20 tracks of uncompromising electronic beats. Featuring unreleased tracks from Kevin Saunderson, The Advent, DJ 3000, Rob Gibson and T. Linder as well as fresh cutz from Joey Beltram, Substance & Vainquer, Jochem Paap (aka Speedy J), The Horrorist and many more, I Love Techno 2007 showcases the most upfront and forward thinking dancefloor techno, mixed in one live take from one of its biggest global pioneers. Dave Clarke is one of the most important techno and electro producer/DJs around. His cut up DJ sets are the stuff of legend, where the dancefloor is constantly kept on the edge as electro, techno, Chicago jack house, booty bass and leftfield sonics are spliced and diced with razor-sharp precision. His seminal productions which stream back to 1989 include the Red Series, early output for his own Magnetic North imprint, 'Compass,' 'Way of Life' and more recent albums such as 'Devil's Advocate' and 'Archive One'. So rightly so Dave Clarke remains one of the biggest techno names on the planet, either running tents or headlining the cream of the world's best festivals (Sonar, Glastonbury, Lowlands etc) and playing clubs and live gigs the world over. Dave Clarke currently resides both in the UK and Holland and has embraced the European way of life as much as they have welcomed him with open arms. He has even established his own weekly radio show on national Dutch radio station 3fm, Belgian national station Studio Brussels and Portuguese National Broadcaster Antenna 3 etc called 'White Noise' which showcases his eclectic taste for the alternative scene, both in and outside electronic music, with the occasional live broadcast (Sonar/Lowlands). His show is also available on the internet via the multi award winning Dutch portal 3voor12 and his collection of Remixes & Rarities that also came out on Music Man last year showcased the depth and range of artists that he has remixed and work with over the years (Gary Numan, The Chemical Brothers, Super Furry Animals, New Order, Leftfield, Depeche Mode, Fischerspooner and many more). From the brooding, rolling beats of Christian Smith and John Selway's set opening 'Coming Storm' to the more subtle rhythmic flow of Oliver Ho's Raudive project and Joris Voorn's unreleased remix of Kevin Saunderson's classic 'Bassline' to new releases from The Advent, Joey Beltram, Fastgraph and Radial Dave Clarke builds the energy up and down across 20 tracks, encompassing the various forms of what we call techno in 2007.

Fairmont
attention minimal techno fans ! New Fairmont album on Border Community
press release via FE email.
FAIRMONT: Coloured In Memory CD (BCR 020CD) : OUT 11/06/2007
This is the second full-length release by Fairmont (Jacob Fairley). Coloured In Memory is the best techno album since either Vitalic's OK Cowboy or Agoria's Blossom. Colured In Memory manages to combine forward-thinking techno with the vitality of the best modern pop. From early releases on Traum, Echochord, Kompakt and Dumb, Fairmont's understated techno has enjoyed a loyal following and critical acclaim amongst the cognoscenti. When Gazebo was released on Border Community in December of 2005, it became an instant classic, encouraging Jake to give the Fairmont sound a bigger focus, stretching minimal techno into the pop format rather than the experimental. It is perhaps these less-classifiably techno, more deviant moments where the album shines -- most memorably in the demented-surf-rock-electro of "Bikini Atoll," the heroin-drone-trance of "I Need Medicine," the mellow folk-hop of "Calm Before The Storm" and the straight-ahead pop of "Times Fool." "Mobula" continues Fairmont's quest for the perfect melodic techno song, "All Good Things" furthers his catalog of electronic gems, and "Flight Of The Albatross" feels new and fresh when put up against the uninspired minimal tools dominating the techno scene at the moment. With enough dancefloor cuts to please the DJs and enough listening tracks to pacify everyone else, Coloured In Memory is destined to be regarded as one of the most impressive Border Community releases to date.

Where: TROMSØ, Northern Norway
What: Europe's coolest Autumn electronic music festival.

Tromsø is renowned for breeding innovative artists within the electronica genre. The Insomnia Festival seeks to continue the creative energy this has given rise to.
Insomnia is a festival for electronic music – which means music created with electronic contraptions. The genre is wide enough to cover music ranging from introverted artists hiding behind their computers to crowd pleasing acts, which might not even be suspected to be electronic music. The creative process within the genre is as varied as the music itself, and the festival hopes to sample a variety of it.

Lyrics: Pink Industry - What I Wouldn't Give
Oh!What I wouldn't give to feel your presence here!...
There's my Smiths tapes you never wanted to hear,
Throw them away,Morrisey in a bin,
If It would bring you back again.
There's my perfumed garden that scares you to death
Live it burried at the end of the bed
I'd compromise if it meant having some of your time.
You mean love does not last forever
But we doubt it all the time
When you're in love you've got to believe it's for the rest of your life.
I've got a pain inside,
It cuts like a knife, cuts like a knife
Oh!What I wouldn't give to feel your presence here!...
Oh! I wouldn't bring your dinner at eight
For a domestic life this the wrong place.
But I would touch so sweet,if you dare.
Feel the power of the earth and the air.
Oh! What I wouldn't give to feel your presence here!...

analysis by glenn mcdonald using Encyclopaedia Metallum data: empath
empath is a similarity analysis of the 50,000 heavy-metal bands listed in the Encyclopaedia Metallum (as of 18 September 2007), based solely on overlap of positive reviewers. Similarity is thresholded at an asymmetrically-weighted score of 0.02 from an overlap of at least 2 voters, and bands with no such similarity are omitted (1330 qualify). Long lists are capped at 30. The band-names in the index are sized by the sum-product of each band's similarity scores and overlap counts.

As the eagle eyed may have spotted if they've looked at the About section lately, there have been some changes within the band lately. Callum Macmillan has seen his glittering career in broadcast graphics and effects get frankly ridiculously busy lately and since we're gearing up to finish our new album, we've decided to part company for now. In his place we've drafted in Josh Docherty from our brothers Posthuman who will be taking on Cal's beatsmithing role and putting his hand in for some of the album production.

It is recorded in a church/studio in Riga with 41 musicians from the Latvian national symphony orchestra. Overdubs and mixing/editing has been done in Duper studio with Jørgen Træen and my own Pooka studio. The album consist of one track ticking out on 38 minutes. Oren Ambarchi
OREN AMBARCHI - In The Pendulum's Embrace
CD Touch # TO:78
Streetdate: September 17
press release via Dense email:
Oren Ambarchi continues his otherworldly investigations with "In The Pendulum's Embrace", a dark twin to his landmark 2004 album "Grapes From The Estate" [Touch # TO:61]. Returning again to the hallowed halls of BJB Studios in Sydney, Ambarchi expands the scope and range of his unique musical language, incorporating an even broader pallette of instruments and sensibilities. Despite the use of glass harmonica, strings, bells, piano, percussion and guitars, it's startling that the world created is still unmistakably his own, and that there is such a cohesion of vision throughout the albums's three lengthy pieces. With this record there's an even more tenuous coexistence of fragility and density; sounds as light as air mingling with wall shaking low-end. The converted already know the kind of trance-inducing euphoria of Ambarchi's music. Newcomers will be scouting the back catalogue.
Australian Oren Ambarchi is a sound artist with longstanding interests in transcending conventional instrumental approaches. His work focuses mainly on the exploration of the guitar, "re-routing the instrument into a zone of alien abstraction where it's no longer easily identifiable as itself. Instead, it's a laboratory for extended sonic investigation". (The Wire, UK). Ambarchi's work on harmonics and resonance has led him to define serene spaces of fluid, shifting sound, both fragile and physical. Ambarchi has numerous releases on influential international labels such as Touch, Southern Lord & Tzadik. His solo releases "Suspension" and "Grapes From The Estate" have transcended the guitar into a zone of alien beauty and sonic impossibilities to critical acclaim. In 2003 his live release "Triste" received an 'honourary mention' in Prix Ars Electronica digital musics category. He has performed and recorded with a diverse array of artists such as Sunn 0))), Fennesz, Otomo Yoshihide, John Zorn, Voice Crack, Keith Rowe, Masonna, Phill Niblock, Toshimaru Nakamura, Evan Parker, Keiji Haino and many more. Ambarchi was the co-organiser of the What Is Music? Festival, Australia's premier annual showcase of local and international experimental music and has recently co-produced a television series on experimental music called Subsonics.

CD Anticipate Recordings 003

Sawako
press release via Dense email:
On Sawako's third full-length album, Madoromi, (a Japanese word which loosely translates to the state of being between sleep and waking) she presents a narrative universe of spacey, dreamy in-between-ness. Working through the woozy shift of the album's arc one emerges at the other end with a return to a physical world decidedly of the present tense. Filled with contrast and dynamics, Madoromi firmly places Sawako at the forefront of the softly colliding aspects of the digital and organic - showing that she manages to hang in the fold between these worlds, and access each with aplomb.
Subtle electronics frame abstracted instrumental source material (vibraphone, guitar, cello, music box) and a variety of real-world sound (random objects, distant, disembodied voices and the occasional presence of Sawako's faintly whispered vocals). With tracks like "Uta Tane" and "Far Away," she highlights the acoustic elements, where editing, bending and stretching - rather than obscure the natural beauty of the sound for the sake of finding something new - help to further bring out the qualities that were quietly hiding beneath the surface. On songs like "Kira Kira" and the album closer, "Tiny Tiny," Sawako uses chimes and tones that twinkle and pop, reminding one of hazy memories recalled through developed and reconfigured memory banks.
Existing somewhere between the art gallery, the headphone commute and the bed-time ritual, Sawako's sound traverses boundaries such as digital minimalism, ambient and electro-acoustic - arriving at a singular approach which feels both mental and tender - restraining itself from going too far in either direction. Finding the melodies within the melodies, the fragments are assembled into soft, resonating compositions that combine all the fragility of a lone person playing toy instruments in their room with the technological prowess of skilled DSP processing. These qualities add up to a warm, moody, forward-minded balance, which defines Sawako's music.

Album: Steve Jansen - Slope
David Sylvian's record label { samadhisound.com } the official SamadhiSound website announce a new album from Steve Jansen titled Slope due for release October 22nd
Presenting Steve Jansen's new album, 'Slope' Presenting Steve Jansen's new album, 'Slope'. Tension underlies the crisp rhythms and intricate programming, while a collection of distinctive vocalists draw out the sentiment in his songwriting. As Jansen explains, 'with this album I approached composition attempting to avoid chord and song structures and the usual familiar building blocks. instead I wanted to piece together unrelated sounds, music samples, rhythms and 'events' in an attempt to deviate from my own trappings as a musician.' The album features guest contributions from Tim Elsenburg, Thomas Feiner, Anja Garbarek, Nina Kinert, David Sylvian, Theo Travis and Joan Wasser (Joan As Policewoman). Presented as ever in a beautiful digipak with design by Chris Bigg.
Released 22nd October, pre-orders being taken now.
Micro website for the album: Steve Jansen, Slope [slope.stevejansen.com]
Steve Jansen never smiles behind the kit. In concert, he's steady and serious, expressing himself implicitly in the texture, the precision, and the subtle wit of his music. With his new album, Slope, a still tension underlies the crisp rhythms and intricate programming, while a collection of distinctive vocalists draw out the sentiment in his songwriting.
Slope follows Jansen's critically celebrated endeavour Nine Horses, with brother and long-time collaborator David Sylvian and electronica artist Burnt Friedman. As Jansen explains, "With this album I approached composition attempting to avoid chord and song structures and the usual familiar building blocks. Instead I wanted to piece together unrelated sounds, music samples, rhythms and 'events' in an attempt to deviate from my own trappings as a musician." Opener "Grip" lays out the challenge: skittering beats propel an instrumental with fragments of voices, resonant metal percussion and breathy snatches of saxophonist Theo Travis. The main theme is quizzical: the rhythm is insistent and affecting, a click track with a conscience. Disparate sounds attach to one another as like unpredictably finds like.

Supersilent
SUPERSILENT: 8 CD (RCD 2067CD) : OUT 10/23/2007
press release via FE:
Supersilent celebrate 10 years as a groundbreaking quartet with their first studio album in almost 5 years. As with Supersilent 6 (RCD2029) it was recorded during a 5 day studio session at Athletic Sound in Halden, Norway, the all analogue facility where other great sounding Rune Grammofon albums like Supersilent 1-3 (RCD 2001), Scorch Trio (RCD 2025), Luggumt (RCD2040) and Raus Aus Stavanger (RCD2049) were recorded. From the monumental hardcore blizzard storm of 1-3 to the elegant electrojazz of 4 and from the quiet soundscapes of 5 to the epic 6, Supersilent have yet again re-invented themselves with 8, an album that to a certain degree explore more abstract and mysterious pathways beyond categories and comparisons. The 68 minutes that ended up on 8 was chosen from 5 hours of finished music, and at one time we considered a double or even triple album. It's quite possible that some of the excellent music that didn't make it to the final cut will appear in one way or another at a later time. The album has been mastered by US mastering guru Bob Katz in close collaboration with producer Deathprod, and it's been handled almost like classical music to keep the extremely dynamic range of the original recording. Again, the names of the players do not appear on the cover. This is Supersilent music, collective work, group improvising, and not a matter of individual grandstanding. They never rehearse as a group and don't discuss the music with each other, meeting only to play concerts or to record. Supersilent music lives in a no-man's-land between the genres, somewhere between rock, electronica, jazz and modern composition. It can sometimes appear to be written or at least arranged, again making it clear that these musicians communicate on a high, almost telepathic level. Needless to say, there are no overdubs. Supersilent was formed in Oslo in 1997 after producer and sound artist Helge Sten approached free jazz trio Veslefrekk with the idea of forming a new quartet. The first time they played together was a concert at Bergen Jazz Festival the same year. Their first album, the triple set 1-3 was released in late 97, also being the first release in the Rune Grammofon catalogue. Ståle Storløkken is a member of Humcrush and Terje Rypdal's Skywards trio and a few other groups. He has also recorded with Raoul Björkenheim, Trevor Dunn and Morgan Ågren, in a new project to be released on Rune Grammofon in 2008. Arve Henriksen has released 3 solo albums to high international acclaim, he has recorded with David Sylvian, Trygve Seim, Christian Wallumrød, Jon Balke and many others. Drummer Jarle Vespestad is a founder member of Tord Gustavsen Trio and Farmers Market and has played with Nils Petter Molvær, Jon Balke and Tore Brunborg amongst others. Helge Sten, aka Deathprod, was a former member of rock group Motorpsycho and is an important producer on the various independent scenes in Norway, with credits including Jaga Jazzist, Nils Petter Molvær, Motorpsycho, The White Birch, Susanna (with and without her Magical Orchestra) and several others.

Mai
I am very impressed with this artist: DOTSHOP.SE - Mai: Still Need A Kiss
A graceful and sincere debut from MAI, a hauntingly delicate universe that enthralls like Mazzy Star, Piana & Sparklehorse ****
GRACEFUL, RIVETING, LUSH, DREAMY AND SENSUAL***
MAI is the mesmerizing musical world drawn by Swedish born Johanna Wedin, with the help of a few like-minded artists such as Dorian Dumont (from the French London-based band The Teenagers) and Bardi Johannson of Lady and Bird’s and Bang Gang’s fame. The delicate intricacies and emotional power of her dreamlike, electronica inflected pop music testify to her utter dedication to her music, which set her out on a very personal journey taking her first from her native Sweden to New York and then to Paris, drawing the attention and earning the respect of many a gifted producer and musician.
