  The end of Plan B Magazine

Plan B magazine is closing, the last issue will go on sale on June 1st: Plan B • View topic - The end of Plan B??

We've come to the decision to close Plan B Magazine after the June issue after a lot of deliberation. The current economic climate, combined with the situation of the music industry - to which, whether we like it or not, the fortunes of a commercial monthly music mag are inextricably linked - has made it ever harder for us to continue producing the magazine the way we want to. To keep going, we'd need to make cuts in staff, content, size, frequency, print quality - and we're not prepared to do that. We're still above water, we're making some beautiful magazines, and we are quitting while we're ahead.

at last a formal review of the BBC 6 music has been called by the BBC Trust: your opinions are now requested: BBC Trust - Trust launches review of Radio 2 and 6 Music

The BBC Trust has today begun its service review into BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 6 Music. This is the latest of the regular service reviews that the Trust carries out on all BBC services.

To ensure licence fee payers are getting the best out of the BBC, the Trust will review every BBC service at least every five years. The Trust has already completed two of these reviews and a third, on the BBC's services for younger audiences, is scheduled to report soon.

This review will examine Radio 2 and 6 Music's current performance and the BBC's future plans for the services. There will be a 12 week period of consultation, beginning today, when the public will be able to give their opinions on the two services. The final report will be published in early 2010.

The review will look at the services' performance including the stations' usage, quality, distinctiveness and value for money.

Reminder, existing problems with 6 Music

- a narrow playlist that is a pluggers charter in favour of conformist guitar rock music.

The playlist is dominated by singles, yet many of 6 music listeners never buy singles ! 6 Music acts as glorified free publicity channel for major labels / large independents to push their mediocre/ average artists. Judge music on artistic merit and not on commercial interests.

- duplicating coverage of artists already served by radio 1 or radio 2

- too much duplication with Xfm and Virgin / Absolute re the playlist. 6 Music identity has become too mainstream in recent years.

- a narrow selection of music from the 70, 80s and 90s - the same over familiar tracks and artists repeated again and again.

- ignoring countless messages on 6 Music messageboards to debate the future of 6 Music.

- poor music programming decisions, i.e missed opportunities e.g the overnight hours should be targeted at the listen again audience with non-mainstream interests and not going through the motions.

- a website that doesn't reflect the original remit of 6 Music, where is the historical context of the the late 60s/ 70s / 80s / 90s ?

- certain gormless presenters that are more concerned with celebrity than music

- a station that has ignored the diversity of music. On 6 Music I would like to see more coverage of a diverse range of artistic music:

avant prog / progressive rock ala Cuneiform and ReR

dark / extreme metal as covered by Terrorizer magazine:

electro

experimental electronic / IDM

folktronica

gothic / darkwave

leftfield / instrumental hip hop

To go forward 6 Music needs a new management team with a fresh approach that values:

* informed music knowledge and expertise
* DJ's and other staff to have a DIY "John Peel" approach to new music to replace the controlled conformist playlist committee
* listeners suggestions to improve the station
* music diversity and reflects a far wider range of music that is not being adequately represented on the BBC.
