When: October 11th - 14th

about

Tromsø is renowned for breeding innovative artists within the electronica genre. The Insomnia Festival seeks to continue the creative energy this has given rise to.

Insomnia is a festival for electronic music – which means music created with electronic contraptions. The genre is wide enough to cover music ranging from introverted artists hiding behind their computers to crowd pleasing acts, which might not even be suspected to be electronic music. The creative process within the genre is as varied as the music itself, and the festival hopes to sample a variety of it.

The festival has its base in Tromsø as the city was Norways capitol of house and techno when the genre emerged. The local artists found their influences in music created outside Norway’s borders, and got contacts on the international scene.

Ibiza Voice News 2006 interview TRENTEMØLLER

TRENTEMØLLER`THE LAST RESORT´- Escape from mass-market through Anders addictive debut album...

music {for robots) on TRENTEMØLLER Danish Forest Music

The Last Resort. The album is simply beautiful, and will likely surprise many of his fans, not only because of the dominance of sweet melodies, but the loads of acoustic instruments like guitars, live drums, glockenspiel, melodica, etc. The album doesn't completely leave out the dance-floor - there are a few hypnotizing jams on the record - but it makes for a great at-home listen, something many electronic producer-albums cannot pull off.

Notice that 3 new album tracks are streaming on myspace: TRENTEMØLLER

chilled slo-paced ambient dubby soundscapes, also part of the evil track reminds me of basslines from The Cure - Mixed Up era

This music fits in with dissensus forum favourite word of early 2006: Hauntology

  Christopher Willits - Surf Boundaries

Ghostly International profile the new Christopher Willits album: Christopher Willits - Surf Boundaries

Christopher Willits
Surf Boundaries

GI-54 | CD/digital | 17 October 2006

California-based guitarist Christopher Willits settles near the shores of pop with Surf Boundaries. On his breakthrough LP, Willits merges the patterns of his signature guitar sound with treated strings, brass and five-part vocal harmonies for a sonic vision that draws upon elements of shoegaze, jazz, ambient and noise.

Recorded during the rise and fall of an intense personal relationship, the album’s spectrum of emotions naturally emerged from the sea changes of lovers’ boundaries, and the ultimate necessity of freedom and letting go. The vocal motif of the aptly titled “Colors Shifting” (sung by Willits and Ultra Records’ Latrice Barnett) appears in three variations, giving the album a rough beginning, middle and end, while other tracks full of electrified drones, intertwining melody lines and smooth guitar loops weave into the album’s structure seamlessly.

Named “the center cell of a rather complex indie rock-avant-garde electronic art Venn diagram” by the San Francisco Weekly, Christopher Willits proliferates artistic diversity in a unique context. After known collaborations with Kid606, Matmos, Brad Laner, Taylor Deupree and Ryuichi Sakamoto, Willits finds a new voice on these recordings. In these 12 tracks, Willits’ view is so broad that anything becomes possible inside his unique vision of organic electronic music. The process of creating this music was his most mysterious yet: “I felt like i was just along for the ride as I gave the music space to breathe and do whatever it needed to do”.

  Jan Jelinek - Tierbeobachtungen

via EAR/Rational Music! details of the new Jan Jelinek album: Jan Jelinek - Tierbeobachtungen - due for release October 24th

The follow up to his highly acclaimed and successful album Kosmischer Pitch from Jan Jelinek, the leading German producer within the experimental electronic music scene. Kosmischer was a drifting loop vortex peppered with subtle Kraut references, and this is the perfect continuation of that highly developed acoustical matrix. Tierbeobachtungen (animal observations) is his fourth album for ~scape, and it addresses the issue of release and liberation. Recorded almost in transit, while preparing his move to a new studio, the tracks reveal and relish in their improvisational character, and drifting, lost sound - yet, they never lose sight of their underlying structure. Tierbeobachtungen might constitute Jelinek's freest and most personal work, with simply arranged tracks based on four to five layered and modulated loops, while his own studio equipment provides the main sampling sources, from synthesizer and guitaret to vibraphone. Jelinek takes on the role of observer on this record, with a level of reflection remaining audible throughout. However, this is by no means intellectual, distanced music - Jelinek leads us straight into a thicket, an acoustic jungle where sumptuous splendor meets the uncanny. A long tradition of psychedelic music pervades the recordings - Amon Düül, Cluster, My Bloody Valentine - yet whatever musical memories might vie for our attention, these are no clear-cut references, just loose associations. On occasion, one might even be tempted to take them for field recordings - gems discovered, stored and returned from their travels by ethnologists fifty or a hundred years ago. Similar to the pioneers of industrial music, like Cabaret Voltaire or Zoviet France, who experimented with field recordings to challenge Western listening habits, Tierbeobachtungen takes us to new, unknown territories and brims with sounds that defy geographic or stylistic classification, not unlike the semi-conscious state between dream and awakening. Overt romanticism is also precluded by Jelinek's sense of humor, which rears its head in titles like "Palmen Aus Leder" (palm trees of leather) and prevents us from taking the album's mystic overtones too seriously.
