I noticed that John Peel played track from the new Convertor album, "Blast Furnace" recently. It is reviewed by Seven here .

"without a doubt, this is one of the most anticipated releases of the year. "

This is one of the few industrial acts that Peel has championed on his show this year. Convertor sound is very complex, heavy and intense.

Online music ezine Seven review the new album by Scorn - Greetings from Birmingham, on the hymen label. The reviewer gives the album a positive review.

I say if this album is as interesting as Scorn's evanscene then count me in.

Why can't so called alternative radio stations play interesting music like Scorn?

Instead in London we have a radio station Xfm that has a current playlist that includes showbiz dull duffers such as Green Day, Offspring, the twat in the cap - Limp Bizkit - making music for morons, Blink 182. And that new Foo Fighters single is pile of aural AOR drivel.

Another excellent resource to keep up to do date with new releases is CD Baby there seems to be an constant stream of creative artists releasing new music this year, more so than any year I can remember for over 12 years. The internet has given independent artists, labels, music enthusiasts and online independent online stores - a new lease of life.

I consider myself to be a well informed person on new artists across the sound spectrum, but scanning through the CD Baby new release section - many of these are completely new and unfamiliar to me.

Echoboy have made some very interesting music this year. In particular I enjoyed the sonic diversity of Volume one, ranging from dreamy psychedelia to distorted industrial techno.

I have heard over 80 albums released in 2000 this year, and I am fed up with some people who say there is not much interesting music in 2000.

Here are a further 115 albums that I would like to check out. I believe that the year 2000 is one of the most diverse and interesting years for music in the past 20 years.

Although because this music is scattered over many genres and different hybrids - it can be difficult in keeping pace with interesting creative music in 2000. Especially when most music magazines, radio stations and TV chanels are so lame and narrow and restrictive in choice.

They then signed to american and toured the states as part of lollapalooza tour. Having returned to the star tracks label, they then released their singles / covers compilation "hello kids" (4/5 in kerrang, 10/10 metal hammer) and then their next studio album "uomini d�onore" which got them more outstanding reviews. Now it is time for the new studio album, "elite", combining heartfelt melodies / vocals with some epic instrumentation and some amazing guitar playing. More in a modern singer songwriter vein, like recent motorpsycho meets sebadoh. The title track itself is an 11 minute instrumental, and with songs like "thin g on a spring", it seems that firesdie are ready for their next step towards world recognition, a clutch of uk shows is promised in the new year.

Sounds are lifted from CDs which have been abused and manipulated into issuing forth digital clicks and buzzes which form offbeat, irregular rhythms, random skips, and queasy, unsteady sequences of transformed program material. These ideas are then amalgamated with those of the more ambient side of fellow mercurial technologists Mouse On Mars which bring estranged, organic melodies which collide to form a fascinating and complex mix of sound.

Talking of emo post hardcore rock The White Octave are from North Carolina and to me they sound across between Bob Mould (think the texture of guitars on workbook) and (the driving emotional style of ) At the Drive in. They are worth checking out if you like epic guitar rock music. The bass work also reminds me a bit of Red House Painters.

This sums up The White Octave's sound brilliantly

Swedish post hardcore legends Fireside return with a new album called Elite, on Startracks.

Fireside's 1996 Do Not Tailgate was a creative opus highpoint for the band, the band had a guitar sound that was exciting, sublime and loaded with stop start dynamics. This was inspired by Quicksand, Fugazi, Husker Du etc Fireside added an additional twist to develop their own brand of post hardcore emo rock.

With emo or emotional based rock firmly back on the agenda in 2000 from bands as diverse as Glassjaw to And you will know us to the trial of dead to The Movielife to Wilt to The Lapse to Cave in - maybe Fireside deserve greater exposure and respect?

Mixing It is a weekly contemporary music discussion programme on BBC Radio 3 covering similiar music covered in The Wire magazine.

Mixing it has been going for over 10 years now, and is one of the few radio programmes alongside John Peel (Radio 1) and John Kennedy (Xfm) that plays the more challenging, radical and leftfield music.

Mixing it previously was on Monday nights, but they have switched to Saturday nights over the past year or so. I say switch back to a week day and have a 2 hour instead. Then they could cover more music.

I have enjoyed Mixing it since the early 90s as it is one of the few shows on radio that actually discusses and debates the sound context.

In London tonight the weather is miserable so I am staying in and will be listening to Mixing It November 11th playlists includes Scanner, Godspeed You Black Emperor and Ear Drum.

Fockewolf
are a darkwave band from Seattle.

"From the remains of And Christ Wept comes a new band. Started by R Wilhelm as a side project from ACW to explore the more electronic side of the industrial genre, Fockewolf soon took on a life of it's own. Adding Severina on vocals, with her dark sultry lyrics, brought in a new diversity to the band. Incorporating gothic melodies and borrowing techno rythms, Fockewolf stands to be one of the more unique bands to come out of Seattle in the last few years."

The vocalists at times reminds of Curve, the music is similiar to other darkwave acts The Razor Skyline, Trance to the Sun, Switchblade Symphony. Fockewolf though make more use of analog synths ala Suicide that that add a distorted layer to their sound.

The Organ also alerted me to a band for Norway called Sonic Debris

Who state "Some of our influences are : King Crimson, Rush, King's X, Faith No More, U2, Simple Minds, Mahavishnu Orchestra and so on. "

Listening to the band it is remarkable has Bono been kidnapped and forced to play with Rush clones for an afternoon? Sonic Debris it is certainly more interesting than U2 in 2000, and how long can the U2log.com
stretch out a mediocore and rather lame new album, from a band that has run out of ideas from what I have heard so far.

I believe Simon Reynolds review of the new U2 album in the December edition of Uncut magazine was a very accurate account of U2 current sound, unlike Adam Sweeeting's review in The Guardian which was OTT - what was he on when he wrote this? U2 -All That You Can't Leave Behind

Shellshock records who are distributing this album in the UK also state this:

One of the most fascinating new industrial artists of the year are Shock of Reality who hail from Germany.

Their music has a lot of substance, electro beats that have deep dark atmospheric sound textures with a experimental twist. The influences that I detect in their sound include Depeche Mode, Skinny Puppy and Einsturzende Neubaten circa Halber Mensch.

Their website includes two tracks that can be listened to via Real Audio.

The world's premier hard techstep junglists Ed Rush & Optical are set to release their new album "The Creeps", first as 5 set LP in November, then CD release to follow next year. Drum N Bass Arena provide samples of their new sound.

For those not familiar with Ed Rush & Optical they specialise in powerful hard distorted electronic music that would even appeal to fans of industrialists Skinny Puppy, Velvet Acid Christ and Hocico or even Cyber Core terrorists such as Strapping Young Lad - not that they sound directly similiar but they do share physical fast and poweful sound aesthetics.

The Best Albums of 2000 (so far) by Geoffrey Woolf. Some very strange choices, and also albums that were released in 1999 at least in the UK, although there are some interesting choices such as Sigur Ros, Six by Seven, The Cure and Primal Scream.

However this list misses out significant album releases from the likes of Red Harvest, Zan Lyons, Cave In, A Perfect Circle, David Holmes, Snapcase,Oliver Ho, Deftones, Tristeza, Laurent Garnier, Swayzak, Circulation, Doves, Two Lone Swordsmen, The The and Trans Am.

One of the first bands that I enjoyed as 10/11 year old way back in 1981 were The Teardrop Explodes with their pop rock sounds of Reward and Treason - passionate and dynamic top 20 tracks that impressed me greatly as a young whippersnapper. The emotional vocals and catchy hooks, and the driving energy of the songs and sounds were winners for me.

Mercury Records are reissuing the 2 albums Kilimanjaro and Wilder with additional tracks.

The December issue of Uncut magazine, has a version of Treason sung in French called Traison - and wonderful it sounds 19 and half years later ! ( It is official I feel old, this would be like someone in 1981 going on about the music that they listened to in 1962! )

Traison was released for the French market in May 1981 but unavailable in the UK.The reissue of Kilimanjaro will include this.

I must listen to my copy of Kilimanjaro album soon, as it is a fine album full of dreamy psychedelic rock gems.

One of the finest tracks I have heard this year "The All, The All" is the lead track of the new EP by Lo Fidelity Allstars who are interviewed here by the NME, a real audio track is also available for you to listen to as well.

Lo Fidelity Allstars like Primal Scream have taken a post modernist approach to music, fusing and plundering ideas to create an exciting sound hybrid.

taking the riffs from Stooges, the hypnotic krautrock from Can, one of the finest synth hypnotic riffs since Cars by Gary Numan, the innovative spirit of 1979 is also at work here with basslines ala Joy Division, PIL and also the brilliant dirty funk of Cabaret Voltaire, This Heat, there are also similiarities with early Simple Minds leap forward ten years and take the free spirited electro-rock approach of Happy Mondays in 1989, while their also 90s breakbeats influences at the forefront mixed in with guitars remind me of the sublime work of Accelera Deck on their Narcotic Beats album.

One this outstanding form the second proper album by Lo Fidelity Allstars due next year looks like an essential purchase for any discerning post modernist.

In the meantime The 'Ghostmutt EP' by Lo Fidelity Allstars is out November 20.

A Perfect Circle are featured by Instant magazine.

A Perfect Circle have released one of the finest rock albums this year in Mer De Noms. The outstanding track on the album is Magdalena, that matches the intensity of the finest work by other epic rock acts such as Killing Joke and Jane's Addiction.

The whole album is arty, atmospheric, innovative, dynamic, psychedelic, powerful and passionate rock music.

A new single is released in the UK on November 6th, The Hollow.
