To say that the debut album from baltimore's sonna is long overdue is a bit of an understatement. Recorded last summer with steve albini at his electrical audio studios, sonna picks up where their critically adored but all-too-rare the eventual bow ep left off. Drums flutter with feather like precision while two guitars weave extremely intricate, cyclical patterns, tied together with warm, agile bass. Sonna's strengths lie in their wonderful ability to let the instruments mingle with each other, creating new melodic threads that might otherwise remain undiscovered. With seemingly endless layers to absorb, each one is carefully given ample room to shine. Drawing from an enormous variety of influences ranging from brian eno and john fahey to the beach boys and pink floyd, sonna makes music that falls somewhere between stimulating and relaxing. It's a dark, gorgeous journey that rewards you more and more with each listen. It's heartbreaking sensory music that is surely addictive to fans of early tortoise, papa m, codeine and yo la tengo. .

Kudos records have details of the forthcoming album by Shur-i-kan: advance
At long last, the much-anticipated debut LP from Shur-i-kan (of Discerning Ear Projects) gets an official release through Freerange Records. The brain child of keyboard supremo Tom Szirtes, �Advance� is an awesome collection of tracks taking influence from jazz, house, hip hop, funk and fusion. This project, which has been overseen by Tom �The Jedi� Middleton, has been 2 years in the making and has already created a massive buzz from the selected few CDR�s that have been in circulation.
The album is released on June 11th on Freerange records.

If I were an editor of a weekly music magazine this weeks front cover would feature: Stakka & Skynet
The Stakka & Skynet album, Clockwork is now set for release June 19th.
Last week's John Peel live studio session was supreme, Stakka & Skynet deserve a lot of respect for delivering drum n bass with a fresh new twist, combining a techno and techstep sound - this compliments well with recent work by Teebee, Matrix, Ed Rush & Optical - but extends the sound further into their own unique style.

FOUR TET : Pause - Domino - CD
Album of the week! Now that's what you call a pleasant surprise.......Multi-instrumentalist Kieran Hebdon returns a highly impressive belter of an album under his Four Tet moniker. Hebdon�s intuitive originality shines the course of what is without doubt his best work yet. �Glue of the world� opens subtly with it�s peaceful refrain of psychedelic bliss. Before long an underlying edge of funk draws in via the tight drumming, meditative horns and improvised chromatic percussion. The use of live instrumentation processed through digital filters draws comparisons with Scott Herron's Delarosa and Asora project, but with it�s eccentricity there is a definite British edge. Tracks like �Everything is alright� blur the line between Hippy folk and Flamenco guitar styles with classical piano and digital malfunctions. Hebdon seems to have hit a chord with this album, a psychedelic chord of musical maturity. Highly Recommended.
PLAID : Double Figure - Warp - CD
Ed and Andy follow up last years essential �Trainer� retrospective with yet another inimitable collection of electronica workouts. �Eyen� is up first with the kind of heartmelting guitar melodies and uber-crisp beats that has defined Plaid�s recent output. The rave pressure is then brought fully on with the firin� �Assault on Precinct Zero� which, to my mind at least, is one of the weakest tracks on offer here. From here on, however, it's pretty much uphill all the way. With many nods toward the current school of Schematic / Chocolate Industries artists, there are many digitized moments of off-kilter grooves that reiterate the genius of the Black Dog LP�s. The songwriting skill displayed on the emotive �Sincetta� sits perfectly against the aggressive dancefloor workouts that pepper this release.The sweet tones of vocalist Mara Carlyle brings a natural feel to the closing �Manyme�, a blissed out soul based track which displays Plaid�s knack of hitting you where it hurts with the tightest Hip Hop groove possible. Double Figure is one of those LP's that excells in its ability to entrench itself deeply within your minds - tunes that are endlessly memorable and execution that veers towards simplicity and is all the richer for it. Superb.

I have included the full review - as this band deserves attention, from the one track I have heard they have the own unique style.
This is hands down one of the top 5 emo/indie recordings I have ever heard in my life! I can't put into words how great this is: Emotional, forceful, catchy� this just rocks. I fully love this CD. I purchased it after hearing only one track, and I've already listened to the entire album a million times in two days. The vocals aren't whiny at all, just heartfelt singing with the occasional burst of harmonies. Musically the usual balance of clean/distorted parts is present, and a few tracks even remind me of a more technical Weezer. The drumming is utterly amazing, so fluid and full of constant motion. The production is perfect. There are no problems at all, everything is clear, full, and perfectly placed. This is definitely a band that is building from the tried and true formula, but this is completely original too. Nice, minimal layout with few colors and great, personal lyrics - well written, and not so specific that they alienate the listener. The bottom line here is near-perfect songwriting, and these guys are damn brilliant! I don't know what else to say. This is my new favorite band of the genre. I fucking adore this disc. This is so good that I can't even concentrate on anything else while I'm listening to it. I find myself wanting to do nothing but sit here and listen to this album repeatedly. If you have any interest in this style of music whatsoever, it is essential that you acquire this gem immediately. I'm speechless.

They are a dishevelled couple of ultra-hip Detroitians with more than a penchant for fuzz-furious electro, decorated with tumbling, visceral stabs of vocodered vocals
I noticed that Wax had article on electro in their current edition, I fully expect that in the next few months the rest of the sleepy music press will sit up and notice electro music is back.

Narcissus

The Opposition - update
The Opposition one of Britain's leading epic alt rock bands of the 80s (alongside The Comast Angels and The Chameleons) have details of a reissue and a new album. (Like The Chameleons they are making a return this year)
Well, all good things take a while when they're in progress, but... Breaking The Silence is on it's final way to be re-released again! The artwork is finished, the masters have been made, everybody is satisfied with the final results and the whole thing should be finished by the end of this month.
The Opposition is working hard on their NEW album which is scheduled for release in August/September after a short well earned break/holiday. Keep an eye on the site because the new stuff is absolutely FANTASTIC!!!

Lift to Experience, from Denton TX, whose album The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads (BELLACD23) will be released by bella union on May 13th have just finished a bout of shows in Europe where they have been warmly received by fans and the media alike.
The band have turned heads wherever they have played and have gained the support of such luminaries as John Peel, Nick Cave and Kevin Shields...(this is getting a little like hello magazine)
I have heard a fair number of tracks off the new album and that have impressed me (as mentioned / enthused about on this weblog several weeks ago), LTE do have a unique sound but there are elements that remind me of a range of bands.
Falling from Cloud Nine and These are the Days are two tracks that stand out. Passionate, epic, evocative are a few words to describe Lift to Experience - they do create an impact precisely because they do have their own niche sound.
So far LTE have been compared to whole host of alt rock bands The Gun Club (circa Mother Juno), MBV, Slint, Ride, Jeff Buckley, The Pixies, Violent Femmes, Godspeed You Black Emperor, The Smiths, Birthday Party to name some - esteemed company.
I think that as the year rolls on that LTE will become a cult band with a ever growing following. I hope to pick up a copy of the album very soon.
It will be interesting to see how the band does in the US as being signed to British label - they have a far higher profile in the UK especially with rabid John Peel and John Kennedy support. Indeed at the moment the album has not been released in the US, and is available only as an import on Amazon.com.
The only US press on the net I can find is a local article in the Dallas Observer
Mind you in the 1980s The Throwing Muses and The Pixies signed to the British 4AD and achieved greater momentum and early attention in the UK before the US, (because the logistics in the UK a lot more easier to manage than the vast uncohesive USA.)
The likes of Woxy 97X and 3WK in US have yet to pick up on Lift to Experience.

A name often referred to in articles about Industrial music, never listened to them until today - Esplendor Geometrico were to Spain what Cabaret Voltaire were to Britain.
They were mentioned on the ever useful Rough Trade weekly email new releases mail out:
Their 1988 album Esplendor Geometrico � Mekano Turbo (Geometrik Records) is being reissued on May 21st.
I downloaded a free Mp3 track from Vitamanic that sounds similiar to the brutal cut up distorted industrial sound of Cabaret Voltaire circa 1979/1980. I have no idea what year this track, HEMEN NAGO was released but sounds earlier than 1988.

Perry Farrell - Update: Confirmation of album release date.
Perry Farrell Song Yey to be Sung album will now be released in the UK on July 16th, and the US on July 17th.
This was confirmed via an online community information mail out, apparently the album was due to be released in June in the US but this has been put back to tie in with a worldwide launch.

Album of the week!! You must excuse us for ranting and raving at you about Zorn for the last year or so....beleive us, we have tried hard to restrain ourselves. The 'Tower Park' EP that was released last July spun on our wheels of steel on constant rotation and was our top single for the year 2000, as I'm sure most of you will already know. Lux Nigra have finally succumbed to our constant demands and are gracing us with Zorn's debut LP 'The City's Collapsing.....' an album that will have us creasing with glee for time to come. This is pure joy - 12 tracks accross luxurious CD and double vinyl formats that deliver on our outlandish expectations and beyond. Opening with 'Sputnik' - a mutant hybrid of electro, berlin post-dub, sci-fi futurism and re-defined electronica melodicisms...uptempo and always lush. 'Serpentine' kicks in with Rhythm and Sound dub chords before Zorn's unique hybrid beats roll in at mid tempo. Augmented by a kind of indescribable melodic accompaniment that typifies much of his material - half lit florescent strips that buzz into being and a mood that is always blue rather than melancholy. Deep into the album the title track kicks in and stands out with supreme depth. So hard to describe with its reflective deep chords and heartache halfsteppa beats. Listening to this you suddenly realise that Zorn has created something altogether new, an uptempo strain of post-electro that reeks of romanticism and emotion with effortless precision. Machine music with an aching condition of the heart. Striking at us with the full force of its originality and sheer brilliance, this is a truly mighty LP from a talent that is spearheading the Berlin music scene circa 2001. Immense.
ANTHONY ROTHER : Simulationszeitalter - PSI net
Electro legend Anthony Rother originally released this seminal LP about 18 months ago. Piercing through the vast piles of meidiocre electro revivalist tunes that were at their peak around that time, 'Simulationszeitalter' stood out as a tough, squelchy classic. Having been unavailable for some time, Simulationszeitalter is now repackaged and rereleased, complete with the acidity, crunchiness and vocoded sparkles that you would come to expect from this master of the genre. Ace.
BIOSPHERE : Substrata 2 - Touch
A new album from Geir Jensson aka Biosphere is always a special event here at the Neck. This is not strictly a new album, but the usual evocative Touch packaging and photography give it a whole new character. This double CD consists of the 'the finest ambient album of the 1990s' Substrata, originally released on All Saints in 1997, here in a freshly re-mastered version. Musically well beyond the confines of beauty, subtle, haunting, lush, stately - the type of music that takes you to so many different places. Classics in the truest sense. The second CD 'Man With A Movie Camera' is Geir's commision for the Troms� International Film Festival of 1996 on a reworking of the Russian silent film with the same name dating back to 1929 from director Dziga Vertov. On this work Geir collaborates with Per Martinson aka Mental Override who also joined up with Biosphere as part of the 'Nordheim Transformed' piece on Rune Grammophon. To complete this astonishing set you then get extra tracks from the Japanese version of Substrata. Essential.
FUNCKARMA : Solid State - DUB - CD
After the quality of the recent fourth Funckarma EP on DUB, the brothers Funcken are back for more. �Solid State� is a ten track album that defines the Funckarma sound beautifully. Subtle, Plaid-like melodies dominate the opening �Blex� which sets the stage for an excellent collection of tracks. Intricate beat patterns are DSP�d with a restraint that lets the listener inside the tracks without having to disassemble the various rhythms from each other. Great care and attention must have been paid to the structure of the album as each track shifts effortlessly into another. �Nuncas� is a standout cut with a superb ambience of afterhours ambientfunk via a soulful, squelched-up bassline. Concentrating less on the complexity of rhythm structures and more on velcro pieced song sequences, this is a revitalised Funckarma heading in a more self-assured and subtle direction. Check.
POLYGON WINDOW : Surfing on Sine Waves US Version - Warp
Having been originally compiled and released for the U.S. market, this new edition of Aphex Twin's legendary 'Surfing on Sine Waves' LP is notable for its inclusion of two previously unavailable tracks. 'Portreath Harbour' and 'Redruth School' were recorded at the time of the original album sessions but have never before been heard. Fitting in fabulously with the rest of the classics on board, we can only say that it's a shame that the reissue hasn't been made available on vinyl. Nonetheless, it's Aphex, it's killer and, well, a rather lovely record even after all this time. Ace.
RAZ OHARA : The Last Legend - Kitty Yo
Coming across as a mixture of Prince (were talking the good stuff) and Nick Drake, Kitty Yo reprazent Raz Ohara once again as their follow-up hope to Gonzales and Peaches. Produced quietly for 6 months in Markus Waibels Berlin studio, almost all tracks are pure vocal and guitar music, with hidden samples and overdubs here and there... Ace Krautpop!
UFEARI : Killing Time - Isolated - CD
Dublin�s fertile electronic underground throws up another quality release in the shape of this debut set from Ufeari. From tight but loose funk to dub electro, dark starnds intermingle with simple programming and synth electroisms. The overall sound ends up as a mishmash of Pan American and Techno Animal.
VARIOUS : Hypercity, mixed by Andrew Weatherall - Force Tracks
Finally released this week!
Weatherall comes correct on Force Tracks with this clickhouse based mix compilation. Featuring tracks from Force Tracks luminaries such as MRI, Luomo (Vladislav Delay), Safety Scissors, Hakan Lidbo, Crane AK, Dirk Diggler and many more, the flow is as smooth as you'd expect and the tunes lie just the right side of minimal and just the right side of House. Check.

Rovo - awesome The Boredoms related experimental electronics from Japan
Epitonic are offering 2 free downloads from the Rovo - Imago album. Rovo feature members of The Boredoms.
From the downloads I would recommend this to fans of Aphex Twin and Faultline. There is a lot going on in the music, multiple dimensional sounds with different time signatures - some live instrumental sounds mixed in with complex dense electronic rhyhms and beats. This is definately interesting material that deserves further exploration, and could be one of the key experimental electronic albums this year. Very absorbing, constantly changing with an organic sound.
Analog comes crashing into digital in Rovo's world. Extraordinarily complex, heavily layered breakbeats form the blueprints with which the group erects its marvelous sound structures. Then Rovo throws in guitar, electric violin, fierce tribal percussion, and sometimes even flute and clarinet -- though you may not recognize them as such, they're so thoroughly distorted -- and a host of stunning effects that blur the disparate elements into a single continuum. Dub and drum and bass may be the influences you spot first, as the hard polyrhythms tend to rise to the fore, but hints of free improv, Krautrock, and spacey far, far-out psych abound
The Rovo album is released June 18th, on (Incidental Music) as an US Import CD via Chunky who make comparisions to the US artists Live Human.

Kiss Online/ Kiss 100
Kiss Online have launched a new website. Kiss 100 FM radio station was set up over 10 years ago in London to play dance music.
They were taken over by EMAP publishers, the station is now a big joke during the day - watered down rubbish, only a few decent shows remain - MR C (tech house), Dave Mothersole (techno) and Hype and Frost (Jungle/drum n bass).

PRP - redesigned website
PRP the daily rock/metal music website including news, reviews and interviews has been completely redesigned.
Unlike the more discerning Lambgoat, PRP is much more wide ranging in the music they cover - meaning you have to wade through the rubbish and mediocore to get to the gems. However for daily updates and coverage that extends from the million selling acts through to the underground - the PRP provides the most comprehensive web coverage of the metal and hardcore scenes.
PRP Release Dates information is also very extensive.

ADULT : Resuscitation - Ersatz Audio
With 5 (continually repressed) EPs under their belt, recently completing their 15th remix, and playing numerous live shows everywhere from San Francisco to Helsinki, including the first Detroit Electronic Music Festival, ADULT now release their debut CD 'Resuscitation'. More than a simple collection of their first 2 years, this full length album spans 7 releases, with 9 of the 14 songs being exclusive mixes, versions, or recordings. The other 5 previously vinyl-only released tracks have been digitally remastered (as have all the songs) with an enhanced sonic presence that brings new life to their crackle. The music defies easy genre categorisation by manipulating the essence of electro and synth-pop into an almost sinister but highly addictive dancefloor treatment. Throw into the pot measures of early '70's punk, New Romanticism and dark teutonic techno and you have a totally essential collection of dancefloor anthems. Those of you who have heard Adult's sounds will know what we mean.......Killer.
ALEXANDER KOWALSKI : Echoes - Kanzleramt
Some great stuff on this, the second strong double from Kanzleramt after Mr.Rother�s fierce PSI Performer set a few weeks ago. Real attention to detail here as well, beautifully crafted dubs, haunted perhaps by echoes of the past, but with a relentless momentum which suggests some kind of hunted flight from pursuit. The programming is all ultra heavyweight, and yet the absolute highlights eschew genre style rhythms for a more open indefinable style. A throughly excellent techno-ish album instilled with echoes of past classics, Detroit mixed with the future, German soundscape electronica and more direct dancefloor cuts. This is, in essence, dubby techno and dubby tech-house, but the real standout moments come with crushing momentum as on the remarkable 'Patterns of Hope' that slips from reverb dub glides into crispy assymetric beats that sit somewhere between electro and house. 'Voices' is equally remarkable, with dense washes of rootsy dub in an emotive, uplifting beatless passage of echo and space. Check.
HERBERT : Bodily Functions - K7
Since redefining the funk as Dr Rockit with his seminal releases for Clear, Matthew Herbert has continually pushed boundaries and amazed listeners with his inimitable brand of natural electronic mischief. Following the recent �Hear Me Now� single comes a new album full of wonder and magic. From the opening �It�s only� you just know that this has the makings of a classic record. Herbert has managed the unthinkable, he has revitalised the tired, highly diluted genre of House by making an album of unfashionable REAL House music with a huge slice of jazz. Uplifting, danceable, balearic, soulful... man, it�s got it all. The beauty of this album lies in part with Dani Siciliano�s sultry voice, heart-melting vocals that are powerful enough to make your heart weep with their simplicity. The charming, delirious joyfulness on display is substantiated by some surprising elements though; Matmos are on hand with laser-treatment samples, and there are plenty of acoustic subtleties on offer. A plethora of jazz-wise moments, a la Herbie Hancock circa �Maiden Voyage�, coupled with restrained digital malfunctions imbue these songs with originality, originality that Herbert is famed for. The shining moment of the LP comes in the form of �I Miss You�, a brutally simple, epic of a song that evokes the deepest of emotions with simple lyrics such as �It�s so hard without you�, and �You�re so hard to remember, it�s not the same now....I miss you�. The painful simplicity of this album is juxtaposed with the kind of technical wizardry that would have Atom Heart sobbing into a Sangria. If you require a record of soul, honesty and integrity for your summer, this is it. The public face of genius.
OTTO VON SCHIRACH : 8000 B.C. - Schematic - CD
Now on Vinyl!! Following on from the recent 'House of Distraction' compilation, Schematic bring us the debut album by Otto Von Schirach. Like stablemate Richard Devine, Von Schirach's music is densely packed with highly effected beats and spasmodic electro glitches. Tracks like 'Lunatic Nitrates' crackle with intense DSP energy, while 'Endothermic Cavewalker' steps into metallic hip hop based territory. With a virtuosic style of programming Von Shirach elevates himself to the standards of contemporaries like Devine and Autechre. A solid album from Schematic that'll have the IDM massive freaking out. Large.
OVUCA : Wasted Sunday - Rephlex - CD
Ovuca returns once again with a double LP that has been described by Rephlex as 'The best ambient LP in the last 7 years....' Wasted Sunday is a mellow, warm, cotton-wool wrapped flower of an album, eschewing complexity in favour of melody and ambience. OK, there are definite similarities here with Autechre's 'Amber' and Boards' 'Music has the right', but this really is no bad thing. Tracks like 'Afternoon Girl' reek of lazy sunshine days in the park with their blend of accoustic fragments and childhood melodies, while the killer 'Pathon' enlists an almost Detroit flavour that sounds like Aphex meddling with toy instruments. Closing track 'Pingis' goes it all Caustic Window and leaves a trace of acid flavour in its trail. Nothing but sheer quality accross 21 tracks of addictive, memorable and classic electronic music. Recommended.

Double cd compilation of 33 tracks featuring the cream of the electronic & experimental underground and selling for the price of a single cd. Features: Magnetophone, Avrocar, The Freed Unit, Stylus, Mount Vernon Arts Lab, Yellow 6, Five Way Mirror (featuring Windy & Carl), 90 Degrees South, a.m.p studio, Pen Llithrig (John ex-Gorky's), the Serpents, Aarktica, Ucm, Our Glassie Azoth, Longstone, Grimble Grumble, Land of Nod, Tystion and Ectogram side projects. The Serpents track features Amp, Windy & Carl, members of the Bunnymen, Gorky's, Super Furry Animals, Skyray, Melys, Ectogram etc etc. The Avrocar track is a Tele:Funken remix and was a breezeblock single of the week on mary-anne hobbs bbc radio one show and also included as one of Ed O'brien's (radiohead) favourite tracks of all time when guesting on lamacq's radio one show. CD1 is volumes 1 to 4 of the legendary ochre 7" ep 33rpm series. CD2 is made up of 17 new tracks.

During the creation of the record, the band was inspired by the music of Tricky, Portishead, Massive Attack, PJ Harvey, and Nine Inch Nails, but don't expect Lateralus to sound like anything you've ever heard before -- unless, of course, you regularly create your own hybrids of Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Rush, My Bloody Valentine, Napalm Death, and Helmet.
If last year Cave in and Sunny Day Real Estate injected Rush influences from the early 80s to create epic soundscapes from the few tracks I heard on the radio last night then Tool with lateralus have made this a triology - but have taken the sound even further and deeper.

definitely finding more of a balance between his love of drum'n bass, jazz and electronic music, this is the definitive squarepusher album. not necessarily more accessible, just less difficult.
Go Plastic is released June 25th. The groovy new single My Red Hot Car is released next week.

The Music
One of the hottest upcoming British guitar bands of 2001 are The Music a band from Leeds that came to my attention on John Kennedy's Xfm show recently.
The Music release their debut single "Take The Long Road And Walk It" / "The Walls Get Smaller" through Fierce Panda Records on Monday May 21st 2001.
The track the walls get smaller reminds me of the epic guitar sounds of Six by Seven and Godspeed You Black Emperor.
I noticed that even the NME have jumped on The Music bandwagon early this is encouraging with a one page feature in this weeks edition. No news yet of album but I will keep you posted of any future news.
According to the NME The Music "play life affirming psychedelia".

Repetition is one of the central elements of Seattlite E. Blake Davis' debut album, Limit. As with musicians like Kit Clayton and Sutekh, Eblake latches on to the relentlessly skeletal beats that ping-ponged their way from Detroit to Berlin and back over to America's west coast, borrowing some production tricks from Jamaican dub along the way.

Ovuca - Wasted Sunday
NME review Ovuca - Wasted Sunday an album that has been picking up rave reviews.
The third album from Finnish eccentric Aleksi Perala, 'Wasted Sunday' is something of a Braindance classic - 22 tracks of fiendishly clever glitch workouts and twisted ambient washes that not only reinvent the wheel of left-field ambient dance, but iron out a few of the flaws that no-one seems to have noticed before.

Tool Lateralus- update - delivery date is getting closer!
By now Tool diehards would have heard the Schism track- it certainly is unusual the only reference points I can think of are imagine sampling the synths and big panoramic atmospheric rock sound of Rush on Moving Pictures into the sonic textures explored in the first The God Machine album, Scenes from the Second Storey.
I love the strange big synths sounds that fuse into the track towards the end of the track. Big pulses of sound like a UFO landing on the earth in a sci-fi film very atmospheric cinematic music.
Kerrang have this today in a 5K review:
"The Crux of this: Lateralus isn't just one of the greatest albums you'll hear this year, it's one of the greatest albums you'll hear this lifetime"
...brave, epic, strange, beautiful piece of music
To be honest if you are not going to experience Lateralus next week then your barking mad.
The anticipation is burning there are reports of more leaked Tool tracks on the net. But I rather wait something this sublime is rare - it has to be experienced as a whole, an experience a cathartic revelation - a revolution in sound.
In the meantime listen to Aenima or Jane's Addiction - Nothings Shocking.
But bring on Lateralus on Monday 14th May. I am waiting.

Thorns is definitely of interest to anyone into the most recent Satyricon or D�dheimsgard releases.
this is a very current, contemporary affair of extreme music and overall a quite pleasing release.

This Empty Flow
More Scandinavian's this lot are from Finland called This Empty Flow who have a new album out NowAfter, reviewed by Digitalmetal.com.
NowAfter encapsulates the listener in the varied atmospheres of Pink Floyd, The Cure, older Porcupine Tree, trip-hop, early Lou Reed, The Gathering and most especially Radiohead.
NowAfter is diverse, brilliant and near impossible to classify. The music still carries the ambient qualities the band is known for, but the music has bridged to other islands of influence. Luckily for the listener, This Empty Flow has furloughed with some of the finest, most wide-arrayed musicians in recent history. Highly recommended to those who love their music bleak, weary, intelligent and full of creativity and honesty.
Also mentioned in the review are reference points to Beyond Dawn and Katatonia - two of the finest contemporary dark rock bands of the past five years.

Anyone expecting the world's most popular experimental rock band to follow up the outta-space electronics of Kid A with something a bit more linear should throw in the towel. Amnesiac does momentarily hearken back to the moody rock-centrism of OK Computer, but it's just as odd and experimental as Kid A, if not more.

MANUAL : Until Tomorrow - Morr Music
Album of the week!! Denmark's Jonas Munk, aka Manual, first came to our attention with his mesmerising EP for the excellent Hobby Industries label. This debut Album for the increasingly devestating Morr Music label is sure to become regarded as a bit of a classic before too long.....there seems to be a bit of a buzz about this LP......people talking. Where Manual differs from the idm fraternity is with his accoustic front. The spine that runs through almost every track accross the 9 gems on offer is an organic one.....melodica, guitars, Piano. The beats and percussive arrangements come as a definite afterburn.....almost an afterthought. Comparisons are hard to conjur up with any degree of precision, but think of Kim Hiorthoy, Boards, Mum. In fact, the overwhelming essence of this LP is in its immaculate musicianship and songwriting displays...warm, but not sickly....melancholy...but uplifting. Recognisable, but new. Essential.
FREESCHA : Kids fill the floor - Attack Nine
Dropping their first EP a couple of years ago to a barrage of acclaim and interest, Canada's Freescha finally deliver with this remarkable debut LP. Destined to slip into electronica folklore, 'Kids Fill The Floor' is a truly gorgeous encounter with noises that transcribe the word CLASSIC onto your minds within 30 seconds of stylus hitting acetate. 'Every Shiney Night' opens up proceedings with the sound of Boards of Canada chilling out with Air.....somewhat melancholy piano keys intermingle with a slowed down hip hop beat and a lullaby synthline. 'Boyrgurl' is an epic standout...haunting synthlines with an almost childlike quality that eventually slip into a classic Dj Shadow-like head-nodder. 'Up The Coast' is one of the most memorable fairytale tunes you'll hear all year....Casino Vs Japan, Marumari, Opiate all come to mind and are duly injected with large doses of sweetness and light. 'Kids Fill The Floor' succeeds most in its ability to shun complexity and DSP macattacks that seem to be so commonplace these days. CLOUDDEAD : Clouddead - Mush / Big Dada
Cast your mind back a few months and you may remember our amazement here at Pelicanneck when the 6 original american 10�s came into stock. Well, a few months later and Big Dada have done the right thing by licensing Clouddead from Mush and presented this genius hip hop epic as a triple pack LP and CD. In case you missed the 10�s this is your chance to be enlightened by the most adventurous , and ingenius concept album ever released. The core members are Dose One, Odd Nosdam and Why? with DJ Signify, Mr Dibbs, The Bay Area Animals and Sole lending a helping hand. Ignore any media hype that tries to pigeon-hole this music, this is pure art. You owe it to yourself to listen. A contender for album of the year easily. Essential.
CONTINUOUS MODE : Disinformation Design - Klang Elektronik
New on Klang! Continuous Mode is the work of Andy Melwig. Having developed his off-kilter technoid project 'Async Sense' in the early 90's and releasing an album under that name for Maurizio's Imbalance label, Melwig teamed up with Thomas Koner to work on the legendary Porter Ricks project. This new work concentrates on drastic interpretations of late 1960's free accoustics and late 60's period Miles Davis......deeply evocative and highly unusual depth throughout. Excellent.
ILO : Ilo - Uni:Form
Comig to us from the same Icelandic scene that set the stage for the excellent Sigur Ros and Mum, Ilo is the work of Oli Breidfjord. The sound of Ilo is a lush fusing of deep electronic hip hop vibes, dubby twists, ambient pops and bluesy vibes. 'Sand' kicks off with Ry Cooder-esque slide guitars strumming in the distance before coming to the fore entwined with drifting accoustic beats and ethereal washes of sound. 'Dusk' is a heavier bag of beats with a view for late night indulgance. Very much a melting pot of sounds and influences, Ilo succeeds best in its overall ability to create soothing sounds from a wealth of base elements and in avoiding genre-specific limitations. Check.
JENS MASSEL AND JORG FOLLERT : Visor - Tom/Digital Narcis -
This is a bit of a legendary release for us here at the da Neck. Jens Massel is the genious behind the Senking, Kandis and Fumble projects on the Karaoke Kalk label. Jorg Follert is the magician behind the glorious Wunder and Wechsel Garland LP's for Karaoke Kalk and Morr Music Labels. 'Visor' is a half hour recording over six tracks that took place in 1995 in tribute to Talk Talk's criminally underrated 'Laughing Stock' LP. The sound is utterly sublime...ambientish atmospherics with laughing stock samples complete with glitch alteration and low key ambience. This is beatless beauty of the highest order...think of Oval's Systemisch and its indescribable sonic texture for reference. Having been impossible to obtain since its release, Visor is finally available again in limited quantities. Highly Recommended.

AKIRA RABELAIS : Eisoptrophobia - Ritornell
Mille Plateaux offshoot label Ritornell return with this beautiful album from pianist Akira Rabelais. This is an eye-opening variation on laptop manipulation - with 20 piano pieces by the likes of Bartok and the ever-captivating Erik Satie performed by Rabelais and then treated to varying degrees of processing. In some cases, such as with the indecipherably titled 3rd track, the Piano is left untouched and solitary keys are played, evoking the more morose pieces of Polish composer Zbigniew Priesner. Where filtering does take place, the treatments are almost always delicate and subtle, doing for the Piano what Fennesz has done for the guitar. The juxtaposition enabled with the untreated pieces provides a tone that is densly emotional...stark, lonely and deeply beautiful. Recommended.
CYCLO (RYOJI IKEDA AND CARSTEN NICOLAI) : Cyclo - Raster Noton -
Japanese frequency genius Ryoji Ikedea teams up here with Raster regular Carsten Nicolai under the 'Cyclo' moniker. Mastering understatement, Cyclo's greatest achievement is in formulating rhythm pieces out of carefully constructed half-structures. The static, frequency tones and emissions that are present offer only half the picture, with the rest provided by the brain's automatic compensatory abilities. Ikeda's usual high frequencies are inlayed with Nicolai's work at the lower end, deep bass stabs and grinding rhythms that are created out of the sound of machines maladjusted and malfunctioning. The result is immensly rewarding - you find yourself nodding your head along to these emissions in much the same way that Frank Bretschneider has managed to create grooves out of raw base elements of sound. Those of you who are unfamiliar with Ikeda's or Nicolai's work should listen to Cyclo as an accessable introduction to the sound of masters of minimal composition. Those of you who know the sound already will require no convincing. Essential
ESA RUOHO (LACKLUSTER) : Spaces - Undercover -
Following his debut releases for Defocus and 7"s for Rikos and Zeal (See Below), Esa Ruoho returns to the fray with this engrossing album under his own name. 'Spaces' is a much darker affair than Esa's previously released works. 'Departure' opens the CD with dark grinding tones and industrial soundscaping that retain an air of heaviness throughout. 'Pond Assemblage' is equally dense accross its 15 or so minutes. A vague reference point would be FSOL, albeit with a darker edge - less ambient, more claustraphobic with an eventual tweaked rhythm kicking in at headnod pace akin to the darker pieces of Germany's Markant. 'Reset' is a beatless piece constructed out of chiming sounds and tone drifts with an almost armaggedon-like quality. The CD ends with 'Compensation', a three minute burst of melodic and soothing beatless harmonies that peer through the clouds of the previous 6 tracks and shine at us with cathartic ambience. These final 3 minutes solidify the entire album into a piece of almost uplifting contemplation that requires repeated listening for a full appreciation. Check.
FINGERNAIL : A Childhood in Aeden - DP -
Electropop contenders Fingernail return with this full-length on the DP Label. Split into three parts - 'Aeden', 'Academy Days' and 'Being Childlike', The first section offers 6 tracks on the Aeden theme that have a slightly dark vibe about them. Think of a slowed down Solvent dueting with Isan and inserting some synth beauty of their own for an idea. 'Academy Days' goes into slightly more orchestral, cinematic territory that culminates with the excellent 'Tiger Claw', sounding like vintage Art of Noise, complete with the deadpan electropop vocal delivery of Sabrina Gallagher. The third section, Being Childlike' kicks off with 'Something Sweet' - a decidedly retro take on the kind of track that would have been perfect for John Hughes teeny drama's in 1985.
HAKAN LIDBO : Tech Couture - Poker Flat - CD
That cheeky thirtysomething chap from Sweden, H�kan Lidbo delivers an awesomely funky set of future slinkcore house and electro influenced lush techno grooves. Never losing the killer groove, H�kan drops bouncing beats, elastic bass twangs, dreamy tones and the funk, baby. From a producer who counts artists from Aphex Twin to John Cage via Shirley Bassey as influences then Master Libido The Third was never going to have anything but a sound of his own. His recent outing for Force Tracks More Facts is a preview of the gems on display here. Oh and the sleeve shows the best pimpin action since Pulsingers Porno. Available on eight track double wax and twelve track shiny disc. Nine triple deucetastic.
MIKAEL STAVOSTRAND : Reduce - Force Inc
Stavostand is a key figure in the Swedish electronic scene as a long-time event organiser, sound installation artist and label manager of the underground Mitek label which he has also released material on as well as Tigerbeat6 and 12K. 'Reduce' continues Force Inc's development of click-techno where the sounds of glitches, crackles and skips infiltrate the structure of minimal
techno's 4/4 drive formula. Check.
PENFOLD PLUM : Scribbled I Infant - Wichita -
The latest release on Wichita comes from the curiously titled Penfold Plum. 'Potent Concoction' kicks things off with distorted trawl through mashed hip hop. It's break heavy and things get seriously chopped up around halfway through. Respite then comes in the form of a cute melodic interval. �-Ziq style drill and rave then kicks in in full effect on 'Vex hectic'. After a hefty, electroid workout 'Metural' drops in, a piano led uplifting dancefloor workout. The melodic 'Cute Toy' finishes things off in fine style. Check.
