  CURRENT Top 100 Gnosis albums

Stats from Gnosis analysed by a member of progressivemusicsociety : NEW, OLD, OBSCURE. IT'S ALL HERE.

Well, after a long hiatus, I've decided to resume my periodic statistical comparisons of the top 100 positions at Gnosis. I have no fixed schedule for doing this, but it is kind of instructive... And I

Below is the data covering the period from September 22, 2004 to August 22, 2006, so for the last two years:

This is the CURRENT Top 100 Gnosis albums that have received at least 5 ratings (as of August 22, 2006). The FIRST number is the current ranking;

the SECOND is the rank at (September 22, 2004)

THIRD number is the difference between the two (a negative number means that the album has a lower ranking now than in 2004). When no second number is given, this is because the album had not yet been rated or released in 2004.

Please note that there are often more than one album with a given ranking, simply because they happen to have received the same average mean rating. So, for instance, there is no number 7 position as such because there are two ex aequo albums at the sixth position. That's why there is no 100th album as such, but 4 contenders for the 97th position!

TOP 75 PRELIMINARY BEST OF 2006

via Acclaimed Music Forum: UPDATE AUGUST 17TH : TOP 75 PRELIMINARY BEST OF 2006 compiled by Stefan

AS EVERY MONTH HERE THE UPDATED LIST INCLUDING THE SCORES OF 'METACRITIC', 'RATE YOUR MUSIC', 'FASTNBULBOUS', 'MUSIK EXPRESS', 'SPEX', 'MUSIC BOX' AND 'ROBERT CHRISTGAU'

Currently the number 1 rated album of 2006: TV ON THE RADIO - Return to Cookie Mountain

With Chuck Eddy leaving Village Voice, will the Pazz & Jop Critics poll continue? If not, Stefan's Acclaimed Music Forum stats maybe is the closest model to measure what music critics rate.

[Particularly in November & December & into January each year Stefan collates numerous album of the year charts into a updating ranked list. This is a separate from the main Acclaimed Music list organized by Henrik @ Acclaimed Music that primarily focuses on print magazines worldwide and Metacritic scores. Stefan's lists include a wider range: including individual lists, music webzines, rateyourmusic etc ]

However as with most critics music polls / stats, high profile [mid tempo] rock based music is heavily represented. Electronic, Jazz and specialist rock genres such Metal are not adequately represented in the methodology. Maybe these need specialist niche collated lists to measure what albums are most highly rated?

Resonant Label - 2006 Schedule Plans

Resonant Label report their future schedule plans:

Before the end of the year, expect to see new album releases from LIBRARY TAPES, PRINCE VALIUM, OLVIS, PORT-ROYAL, STAFRAENN HAKON, YELLOW6 and a few others!. Maybe some new names too, and perhaps the first in the run of limited vinyl releases n'all. All in all, there is a LOT planned and we're delighted to get back in the swing as they say.

You can check out new songs by Library Tapes, Yellow6 and Prince Valium on our myspace site: Resonant

Next 2 Scheduled Releases

artist: Library Tapes
title: Feelings For Something Lost
catalogue #: RESCD020
format: CD
label: resonant
barcode (upc): 0666017144320
release date: September 2006 (TBC)

Second album from the Swedish contemporary classical duo, a year on from the sold out debut "Alone In The Bright Lights Of A Shattered Life" (which will be repressed soon). Once more, sparse, bleak compositions take centre stage on "Feelings For Something Lost", with the piano more prominent and the overall sound more stripped down than was the case with its predecessor; dark atmospherics echoing the work of Rachels, Set Fire To Flames, Sylvain Chauveau et al.

Once again the album is the work of David Wenngren and Per Jardsell, with guest appearances from Cecile Schott (COLLEEN) on the stunning "Leaves Abstract In A Village Plunged Into Mourning" and Erik Skovdin (DEAF CENTER) on "Departures (Burning Saints For Your Own Sins)". The album features twelve tracks, recorded between November 2004 and January 2006, all of which have lengthy titles that convey the feeling of the music perfectly.

artist: Prince Valium
title: Andlaus
catalogue #: RESCD019
format: CD
label: resonant
barcode (upc): 0666017141121
release date: October 2006 (TBC)

Prince Valium is the alter-ego of Þorsteinn Ólafsson, a 30 years old Icelander. A former member of various bands, Þorsteinn soon put his mind to his solo creations, mainly ambient electronic music. In 2003 he teamed up with Skurken, a fellow Icelander and together they made the album "Í Þágu fallsins", released on Resonant records. Andlaus is a collection of Prince Valium´s most recent creations. Using only a guitar and his computer, the Prince made the album in his bedroom over a relative short period of time.

Personally invited by Devandra Banhart to perform on his All Tomorrows Parties’ stage in May 2006, Bat for Lashes, made themselves known to more of the world.

DiS report Bat For Lashes: September tour dates, October single

Eat Your Own Ears Album Launch promotion in London on Tuesday 12th September

VENUE / THE SPITZ 109 COMMERCIAL ST,
OLD SPITALFIELDS MARKET, LONDON E1 6BG

BAT FOR LASHES create an intimate, cinematic world, reminiscent of the nocturnal wanderings of Kate Bush and the heartfelt prayers of Cat Power. Natasha composes songs that rise out of a dark, heartbreak wilderness and take you on a journey in to the light. Taking influence from 70's film soundtracks, weather phenomena, childhood Halloween parties and a David Lynchian vision of suburbia, they occupy the tenebrous space between innocence and a loss of innocence and come straight from the storyteller's heart.

Maybe Bat for Lashes are a candidate to make next year's Mercury Music Prize shortlist?

Velvet Acid Christ

Metropolis Records will release a new album from Velvet Acid Christ titled: Lust for Blood on September 26th

Possibly the most complete and diverse Velvet Acid Christ album in the past ten years, Lust For Blood is an aggressive return for one of electronic music’s most prolific artists. Angry and other times haunting vocals are forged to incessant beats, permeating melodies, and relentless bass lines. As an omage to early electronic music, guitars are once again introduced into the mix of patches, pads and circuits. Fans of The Cure will fall in love with “Crushed,” while experienced VAC listeners will appreciate the intensity of “Wound” and “Lust,” at the same time discovering a slightly different vocal approach in “Parasite.” Lust For Blood proves that Velvet Acid Christ has not even begun to tap into the innovations they are capable of even with a decade of musical experience under their belt. VAC is an unstoppable force and one to be reckoned with for decades to come."

Uncut magazine did lose it's way earlier this year, that ghastly Paul Weller on the front cover was the low point. I actually thought the recent Spring redesign was an improvement, less Americana, better magazine design, more reviews etc. I expect that in 6 months time, Uncut will recover some of the lost sales.

Metal Storm review Mastodon - Blood Mountain

The Necks - Chemist

Official Öya Festival website: Thanks for 2006 - We're looking forward to 2007

This year's Öya Festival was, as we see it, one of the wickedest Norwegian rock festivals ever. The festival was a giant success, both from our, the audience's, and the artists' perspective. The response from the audience, volunteers, band members, biz people, and others indicates that this has been an amazing experience for everybody that's been involved.

  Buzz Band: 120 Days

I was the first blogger on planet earth to rave over Norway's 120 Days earlier this summer, with their monumental electro-rock track: Come Out (Come Down, Fade Out, Be Gone). Now the bandwagon has started to roll:

stereogum: Band To Watch: 120 Days - includes a link to the mp3 track: Come Out (Come Down, Fade Out, Be Gone).

Also includes some photos from the recent appearance at the Oya festival in Oslo.

Pitchfork highly rated the track yesterday: Pitchfork: 120 Days: "Come Out (Come Down, Fade Out, Be Gone)" [Track Review]

Norwegian blogger: for the eardrums last week: 120 days (ex. the beautiful people)

The debut self titled 120 Days album will be released October 10th in the US on Vice Records, and October 2nd in Norway on Smalltown Supersound.

Will Smalltown Supersound release this in the UK?, or are they still looking for a pan European deal outside Norway. A label such as Mute would be a good match.

120 Days were previously known as The Beautiful People - I tipped them as a band to watch out for last year !

Top 1000 Rated Albums of 2006

As part of the recent rateyourmusic.com design upgrade there is a new navigation structure for the top charts by year / decade.

Updated: New url for Top 1000 rated albums of 2006 on rateyourmusic.com

with not many significant summer releases since the last update, nothing much has changed in the top section i.e top 100.

However:

7: Drudkh - Blood in Our Wells [Ukranian atmospheric black metal in the top 10 !] A high climber

19. Envy [JPN] - Insomniac Doze [Mogwai endorsed Japanese heavy post-rockers]

40. Guillemots - Through the Windowpane [Mercury Prize has raised their international profile]

Strange that Bruce Springsteen, Hammersmith Odeon, London '75 is back included as a 2006 release and is the top rated album of 2006. I thought it previously got kicked out of the 2006 list for being a retrospective release.

FREESCHA - Head Warlock Double Stare

Darla profile the forthcoming Freescha album: FREESCHA - Head Warlock Double Stare due for release on Attacknine Records on September 18th

Attacknine Records is proud to present Freescha’s long awaited follow up to “What’s Come Inside of You”. Somewhere deep inside the tape machine, when we think we're finally asleep, the amusement park becomes a rock 'n' roll fright mare, and the barbarian rules the bailiwick. Will you be able to yoke the scepter of your glam-box in order to save the opera from Sawlord? Or will the nether-realm be forever engulfed by the shadow-cast, leaving only a bloody slub in its wake? The answer will be found in the runes. And the wizard crystals. And your lube. "HEAD WARLOCK DOUBLE STARE. Twenty four tracks that take you deeper into the darkness of Freeschaland, dripping with fuzzy Phantom pop, bent pianos, and warping synths. There’s someone staring at you in the dark. For fans of; lasers, roller skates, cob webs, magic, armor, dance machines, wizard crystals, lube, Tones on Tail, slasher films, jet cycles, and Yor. Track List: 1. Testing The Jammer, 2. Old Age For Duke of Slade, 3. Galacticus, 4. Moving, 5. Where All Good Squishes Go, 6. Chasm Night, 7. Gory Gums, 8. Phantom, Strike The Disco Down!, 9. Death Battle 2: Call of the Haunted (Return of Sawlord – Baby Tiger), 10. Killer on the Ride, 11. Humping for Dummies, 12. The Pageant of Smote Thine Beard, 13. Glitter Gun For Glue, 14. King Dracula, 15. Nothing To Say But Magic, 16. Candelabra, 17. Shiver Me Timbers, 18. Scandalous, 19. Frozen Stiff, 20. Speaker Eater, 21. Secret Admirer, 22. Phantas Me On The Opera, 23. Bring Me The Boogie, 24. The Strange Disappearance of Jebodiah Sloak, Journeyman Freescha (Pronounced freesha). is the creative pairing & friendship of the San Fernando Valley born Nick Huntington and Michael McGroarty. Their California-brand of organic electronic songs are observed and enjoyed by fans the world over, as well as by other music figures such as; Two Lone Swordsmen, Casino Versus Japan, Manual, Hermann & Klein, and Marumari. Freescha recently completed a cover of the song “Spiders” for Moby. They are scoring the music for the art-house horror film “Zero Dark Thirty”, for a 2007 Theatrical release. Freescha was asked to cowrite a song with the synth-pop band Stefy, whose debut album on Wind Up Records will be released in August 2006. And finally, Freescha was asked to collaborate with the very talented pop-songstress Sia for her next record. "A ghostly, timeless, parallell, otherworldlyness pervades every track taking it way beyond mere zeros and ones. File under church music from distant galaxies" -Andrew Weatherall (Two Lones Swordsmen, WARP) "I swear I've listened to those Freescha cd's more than any other cd's in the last 6 months. They're so great. I love them." -Moby "... misters Huntington and McGroarty lost the map a while ago, but they've since killed the headlights and let go of the wheel, letting the logic of the lost highway guide them, at least until daybreak." -viet-nambla
