A Sunny Day In Glasgow

This band will make an impact in 2007. A strange mixture of early MBV, Aphex Twin, Insides, Wire late 80s

A SUNNY DAY IN GLASGOW - Scribble Mural Comic Journal CD (Notenuf:)

via darla

COMING 2/13/2007
Using mandolins, banjos, noise, samplers, lots of cuttin' n pastin', and all of the normal band instruments, Philadelphia's A Sunny Day in Glasgow adds lush female vocals and dance-y rhythms to make dreamy pop music. Distorted guitars alongside Robin and Lauren's vocals glisten for thirteen storied tracks on "Scribble Mural Comic Journal." The album succeeds in marrying Cocteau Twins' otherwordliness, JAMC white noise, the best aspects of early Aphex Twin, and the jangle of "Strawberry Wine" era MBV to create pop music that somehow makes sense despite making no sense. (4 stars) Like Grizzly Bear, ASDIG's got a steep pop-to-noise curve, so their most gorgeous melodies become thick and swampy before you've noticed the tide has come in. Even the brightest colors look black if you smear them all together." - Pitchfork " (9 out of 10) Captivating. Stunning. A Sunny Day in Glasgow has single-handedly returned the shoegazer genre to its former glory. One of the best releases of 2006!" -Under the Radar

An album to get your self lost in, that covers all the bases from grim discordant riffing, to rich ambience, to dark cimnatics, to epic rock to many other musical adventure that become clear the deeper you swim into this dense masterwork, but most important it all sound so fluid and effortless and epic. Truly breathtaking stuff and the best multi-layered black metal record in many a moon.

Shining

Rune Grammofon RCD 2060 - Shining: Grindstone

Album number four from this young, vital, hard hitting and original quartet. Multi instrumentalist, writer and mainman Jørgen Munkeby is, like many of his contemporaries from a young generation of Norwegian musicians, not content with sticking to one genre but listens to and draw inspiration from many places, something that is as evident with ”Grindstone” as it was with it´s predecessor. Just listen to how they move between complex riffing, filmic soundscapes, jazz, classical and modern composition. People dropped many names when trying to place Shining´s previous album on the musical map, from The Mars Volta and Slayer via King Crimson and Mahavishnu Orchestra to Henry Cow, This Heat, Ornette Coleman, Ligeti and Messiaen. One thing they all agreed on was the striking originality of this young group who has gone through a radical transition from starting out as a postbop jazz quartet.

Released 29.01.07

Billy Mackenzie remembered 10 years on

Scotsman.com Living - Party cheers anew

Gone but not forgotten: MacKenzie's music lives on in everything from the 80s-referencing pop of The Guillemots to the soaring romanticism of Arcade Fire. And through the posthumously completed album Beyond The Sun and reissues of past Associates' albums his output in the past 10 years has exceeded the final decade of his life.

Cited as an inspiration to everyone from Bono to Björk, Billy MacKenzie was Scottish music's most flamboyant son. On the 10th anniversary of his death, the legacy of the great lost pop star is being reignited.

The Mission

The Mission new album: God Is A Bullet

It’s entitled ‘God Is A Bullet’ and will feature 15 new songs. The scheduled release is early April (exact date tbc) with a new single ‘Keep It In The Family’ scheduled for release in March (again, exact date tbc).
As I’ve mentioned before, we have enjoyed the contributions of some very special guests........I’ve already told you about The Mission’s original guitarist, Simon Hinkler, playing some fantastic guitar but besides Simon we also have the spine tingling voice of Julianne Regan (All About Eve) alongside my voice again on a couple of tracks for the first time since the ‘Children’ album in 1988......It’s amazing how well our two voices still sound together.......
We also enjoyed some mighty fine guitar playing on 3 tracks from original All About Eve guitarist, Tim Bricheno, who also once played with the Mission on a series of European festivals back in 1990 after Simon had left the band. ......
