CO-µ-NICATE - Re: New Releases Uploaded:

Hello. We're now in February and the MRK1 album (Copyright Laws) has just been released. Featuring a heavier more dubby sound + a track with vocals from Sizzla - it's a definite step up from Mark. By the way: those wanting the Sizzla track on vinyl can find it on Contagious Records (Mark's label)

Then comes the Distance album - a dark masterpiece (My Demons) with Lynchian soundscapes and the ever present low end. Rock influenced drums too...

March has new albums from Julian Fane (Our New Quarters) and the Gasman (Love Collection)

Planet Mu will also be relocating to London this month. More news soon...

New Violators

80s inspired band from Trondheim in Norway, listen to 3 tracks on myspace: www.myspace.com/newviolators

New Violators = new Norwegian art-pop-rock band strange mix of 80s influences Tears for Fears, Morrissey vocals, Modern English, ABC, Furniture, The Railway Children, Hipsway, The Comsat Angels after 1984 etc.

Bruce [ex Angry Robot blog] reckons they are a Spandau Ballet rip off, I can hear it to. Maybe a closer comparision Morrissey decides to join Hipsway with better songs in 1985/1986 instead of making The Queen is Dead.

New Violators have potential even if they music is on the lightweight side of melodic pop-rock and has a polished sophisticated over production sound, derivative of mid 80s Brit music - their tracks are rather addictive to listen.

  Welcome Back !

Finally, my phone line / Broadband connection is back.

New Version of Blogger

I have finally been forced into switching over to the new Google Login version of Blogger/Blogspot. I have noticed a few things that need changing in my template such as the URL formatting of the monthly archive webpages. This should be implemented in the next few days.

Clearing the Backlog

I have 7 days of information to catch up with e.g emails and an overloaded RSS reader.

Fopp acquire 67 Music Zone Stores

Fopp have acquired 67 Music Zone stores from the Administrator, Deloitte. [There were previously 104 Music Zone shops in the UK, so Fopp have cherry picked the best locations to fit their existing store portfolio.]

Fopp will become the third largest specialist music retailer in the UK in terms of store numbers (after HMV and Virgin Megastores).

The Herald : News: Fopp takes over Music Zone to become biggest UK independent

By late January all the Music Zone shops had ceased trading, so how soon these ex Music Zone stores reopen under the Fopp brand remains to be seen.

[The are numerous issues to be considered, including re-hiring of previous Music Zone staff, new Fopp signage, converting the store interiors to the Fopp format, assimilating systems & re-training the staff to fit the Fopp culture, marketing & PR of new stores etc.]

Fopp website

Info on wikipedia: Fopp

There are currently 46 Fopp stores. 10 in Scotland, 35 in England and one in Wales. They've also recently taken over 67 stores previously owned by Music Zone, most of which are based in England. In addition to the stores they have acquired Music Zone's old head office and warehouses.

With 46 existing Fopp Shops and 67 ex Music Zone stores to be converted to the Fopp brand, there will soon be 113 Fopp shops in the UK.

Future Conditional

LTM release an interesting synth-pop album in April: Future Conditional - We Don't Just Disappear

LTM is pleased to present the debut album by Future Conditional, the all-new electro-pop project from Piano Magic mainstays Glen Johnson and Cedric Pin.
Drawing inspiration from classic analog synth-pop by the likes of New Order, Kraftwerk, OMD and Section 25, the album updates the retro-futurist mix with a stellar selection of guest vocalists, including Melanie Pain (Nouvelle Vague), Bobby Wratten (Field Mice/Trembling Blue Stars), Angele David-Guillou (Klima/Piano Magic), Carolyn Allen (The Wake) and Dan Matz (Windsor for the Derby). The 10-track album was produced by Glen and Cedric in 2006. Standout tracks include Switchboard Girl (sung by Melanie), Broken Robots (sung by Angele) and the title track, featuring Bobby.

"Future Conditional isn't just an exercise in nostalgia. We are, in some way paying homage to the groups we love and inspire us, but we're also experimenting with the glacial electro/human emotional interface. The future is a robot with a human heart." (Glen Johnson)
DUE OUT: APRIL 2 2007.

listen on myspace: Future Conditional best track: the volunteer - icy deadpan vocals, New Order melodies and pulsating synths.

Arve Henriksen

Rune Grammofon RCD 2061 - Arve Henriksen: Strjon

On his third and quite brilliant new album, ”Strjon”, Arve Henriksen is joined by his Supersilent colleagues Helge Sten and Ståle Storløkken. Sten has also produced the album. ”Strjon” brings together the various sides of Henriksen, from the zen-like solo pieces of his debut album ”Sakuteiki” to the open-ended melancholia of ”Chiaroscuro” and dark, brooding lyricism of Supersilent. ”Strjon” is the mediaeval name of Arve´s hometown Stryn on the westcoast of Norway, referring to a streaming river or water. The nature around Stryn is fantastic and the changes between winter and summer are quite drastic, from crashing avalanches in steep mountains to calm beauty and majestic tranquility. Some of the music dates back to sketches made by a young Arve Henriksen in these surroundings, later worked on by both Arve himself and Helge Sten.

available to pre-order @ darla

Jatun is Alan Grosvenor (guitar, keys, bass, loops) and Scott Worley (vocals, keys, guitars, laptop). Alan and Scott met in Portland,OR circa '04, and started writing the songs that would slowly form into the mish-mash of cables, circuits, ivory and alcohol known as Jatun. They began recording their self-titled debut album in September 2005, and it’s been engineered/mixed by Scott & Alan and mastered by Carl Saff. The first recorded Jatun song was "Ion Crush," which was featured in a Nike SB promo video for the Zoom Tre shoe and is also featured on the Signal Snowboards webpage. The songs "Ghost and Grey" and "The Temptation of Joy" have been used by Norwegian company Helly Hansen, accompanying snowboard and ski team imagery on two videos. Additionaly the video clips are being used on the Helly Hansen website as a part of their HHTV program. Influenced by an expansive range of artists, genres and styles, Alan and Scott have learned to interpret and appreciate sound from a broad perspective. Such open ears have facilitated an understanding of sonic interplay, and acute attention to arrangement and detail. Armed to the teeth with an arsenal of quality, vintage gear and a penchant for capturing the resultant noises, they craft music thoroughly and thoughtfully. Lush, enveloping and hyper-textured, Jatun’s songs blanket themselves around your ears and saturate your head with warm and intoxicating, Orange-tinged tones. For Fans Of: Morr Music, 4AD, Warp, Anticon, Temporary Residence Limited.
